This has been in my watchlist for so long because I’ve been waiting for a cinema near me to hopefully do a screening but I might just give in and watch it!
>I’ve been waiting for a cinema near me to hopefully do a screening
Since you live in the UK I’m gonna guess that this is the Prince Charles Cinema? Or maybe the BFI? Either way us Londoners are lucky as hell that we have classic films cinemas.
Ashes and Diamonds - Poland
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives - Thailand
Come and See - Russia
Taste of Cherry - Iran
The Battle of Algiers - Algeria
Pather Panchali - India
City of God - Brazil
The Raid - Indonesia
Hope you enjoy it! I’d also recommend On the Silver Globe for Poland. Although it is incomplete and very weird but so good in a very specific way. Made by Andrej Zulawski the same guy that made the much more famous film: Possession.
I wasn’t sure if anyone else had done it before and I was looking at my stats and thought it was a fun way to get recommendations and branch out more this year :)
Norway - The Worst Person in the World.
Does this count as Norway? That's the language and was filmed there, says it was released first in France, but it's one of the countries of origin. \*shrug\* Watch it anyway!
I’ve had The Worst Person in the world, Reprise and Oslo August 31st in my watchlist for a while as they are all available on mubi but never known what one to watch first. Is it an emotional watch?
I like all of them. I think *Oslo, August 31st* is my favorite but it's brutal. *The Worst Person in the World* is a close second and there are some tough moments but it's a much easier watch. *Reprise* is probably the easiest watch emotionally.
I don't think any particular order is better than another, so chronological is a good option.
A lot of "Iranian" films were made elsewhere because Iran has strict censorship laws. I'm guessing they wouldn't approve of the lesbianism in Girl Walks Home (or am I confusing it with a different vampire movie?)
Under the Shadow is another one that's set in Iran and has Iranian filmmakers, but was produced by UK and shot... I forget where but somewhere else. Waaaay too critical of the Iranian government to be made there.
no india???
what type of movies do you like? satyajit ray is great (charulata is my favorite movie by him), but ive heard good things about gangs of wassepur, sholay is an old but good movie. mirch masala is also good
Not yet! I always grew up loving film but got out of the habit of watching them for a few years then during covid lockdowns I rekindled my love for film and have just been rewatching my old favourites and working through the filmographies of those directors. I’m really open to any type of film. I’ll have a look into those. Thank you :)
I can’t really tell if Czechia is checked off on the map so forgive me if it is, but the Czech new wave of the 60s is one of my favourite Eras
Daisies - Vera Chytilová (1966)
Closely Watched Trains - Jirí Menzel (1966)
The Cremator - Juraz Herz (1969)
Unfortunately those are tagged as Czechoslovakia which doesn't fill in Czechia or Slovakia on the map. It's kindof annoying that Letterboxd chooses to represent the world like this when historical films just seem to hover in a void somewhere as if they don't have a geographic connection as well
If you haven't checked out Indian films yet, you should definitely start looking into them. India is a gold mine of great movies. So many cultures and languages make for such a diverse cinematic landscape. I can give you some recommendations:
Movies by Satyajit Ray, my favorites are The Apu Trilogy, which consists of Pather Panchali, Aporajito and Apur Sansar; Charulata; Devi; Nayak; Mahanagar. Most of these are available on Criterion as well.
Movies by Ritwik Ghatak: Meghe Dhaka Tara, Subarna Rekha, Komal Gandhar. Also available on Criterion, thanks to Martin Scorsese.
Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2, which is a duology of Gangster movies. A modern Classic.
Super Deluxe, a movie about different lives intersecting through unlikely events.
Nayakan, another great gangster movie.
Hey Ram, a movie about the Hindu-Muslim communal riots post Indian independence and the assassination of Gandhi.
Check out any of these that seem interesting to you. If you like any one movie particularly, then I can give you some more recs based on that. Enjoy your journey!
If OP is looking for more than just some cheap thrills than they should rather watch the Apu trilogy or Gangs of Wassepur. RRR is the equivalent of a mainstream blockbuster...there are better movies that stand the test of time. Especially Satayjit Ray movies...they are high art.
Vietnam: When the Tenth Month Comes (1984)
Philippines: Manila in the Claws of Light (1975)
Bhutan: Lunana - A Yak in the Classroom (2019)
Iceland: Woman at War (2018)
Netherlands: Black Book (2006)
India- Duvidha, RRR, 3 Idiots, Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani
Chad- Lingui the Sacred Bonds
Senegal- Black Girl
Iran- Taste of Cherry
Trinidad & Tobago- Bazodee (warning- this is not actually a good movie, but I thought I’d better throw in a movie from my country, one of our only movies actually, since you’re likely to never hear about one otherwise).
Side note, I really wish the map were more accurate. I have countries highlighted that I’ve never seen a movie from just cause it was filmed there or the country financed it. And Russian films made in the Russian parts of the former USSR should count for Russia imo.
I've given all of these 4+ stars. List is in order of recommendation
* [Tropical Malady](https://boxd.it/3XnRKx) (2004) from Thailand: https://letterboxd.com/grobbledongs/film/tropical-malady/
* [Land of Ashes](https://boxd.it/lZWG) (2019) from Costa Rica: https://letterboxd.com/grobbledongs/film/land-of-ashes/
* [Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem](https://boxd.it/87Lo) (2014) from Israel
* [Ida](https://boxd.it/6fRg) (2013) from Poland
* [Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts](https://boxd.it/gazQ) (2017) from Indonesia
* [Monos](https://boxd.it/eJGe) from Colombia
* [Retablo](https://boxd.it/i1HK) (2017) from Peru
* [I Am not a Witch](https://boxd.it/g1yY) (2017) from Zambia
* [As I Open My Eyes](https://boxd.it/c38q) (2015) from Tunisia
* [The Club](https://boxd.it/amQC) (2015) from Chile
* [Solaris](https://letterboxd.com/grobbledongs/film/solaris/) (1972) from USSR: https://letterboxd.com/grobbledongs/film/solaris/
I haven't seen anyone mention Egypt yet so I'll throw a few of my favourites. Netflix actually has a really good selection of Egyptian Golden Era cinema (50s-60s)
Cairo Station is a very stylish noire film set in Cairo train station. It's up there with the best of American noire of the same era imo
I also enjoyed more traditional dramas of the era, The Blazing Sun is by the same director as Cairo Station. It also features an extremely young Omar Sharif in his first film role! The Land is another good one by the same guy but in the 1970s, it has camel police 🐫🚨😁
Bro, you gotta get on Russia.
*Brother* if you like action flicks.
*Viy* if you're down for some goofy technicolor fantasy.
*Russian Ark* if you want to be blown away by some wild technical bullshit.
And *Cargo 200* if you want terrible sleeps for the next week.
Edit: ugh, apparently letterboxd doesn't log USSR as Russia, so *Viy* isn't gonna change your map.
I’m terrible at geography so apologies if any of these are countries you have already
Joyland (Pakistan), Atlantics (Senegal), Honeyland (Macedonia), Quo Vadis Aida? (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Three Colors White and Red (Poland and Switzerland respectively)
La Llorona, Guatemala
Shutter, Thailand
This Is Not a Film, Iran
Taxi, Iran
The Salesman, Iran
A Separation, Iran
Iran has a lot of good movies haha... This is a cool exercise by the way.
Himala (1982) - Philippines
(iTunes in the Philippines has a subbed version, that’s very much the only way to watch Himala with English subtitles afaik)
India.
I watch films from almost every country and I consider films from Kerala ( a small state in India ) to be among the best in terms of quality, writing and performances. The language is Malayalam. Just give it a try and appreciate the magic of cinema.
Recommendations for a start:
Joji.
Ee ma yau.
Kumbalangi Nights.
Jallikattu.
Maheshinte Prathikaram.
I don't actually know many Portuguese movies by memory but A Gaiola Dourada is the one that always comes up. It's a comedy about a family of portuguese people living in France. Portugal is very very closely related to France due to massive immigration waves that happened a few decades ago. It's a very very genuine movie with pretty much an all Portuguese cast of famous actors.
*A Hero* - Iran
*Touki Bouki* - Senegal
*Gangs of Wasseypur* - India
*Cold War* - Poland or *Three Colors: Blue* if you count that (Polish director and partially Polish produced, but shot in France in French)
*News From Home* - Belgium (it's a little pixelated and I can't tell whether Netherlands and Belgium are marked or not)
*The Worst Person in the World*- Norway
I assume you've seen USSR films, but no proper Russian ones, but if not then pick something from Tarkovsky, Kalatozov, Klimov, or Vertov
-The Secret in their Eyes (2009) is a really good thriller.
-Son of the Bride (2001). If you are not that much into thrillers, this one is a nice drama/comedy.
Both movies are from Argentina.
We have a pretty similar map, I have a few more countries filled in but often that’s just because they coproduced some movies. Off the top of my head, Official Competition (2021) is coproduced by Argentina, and it’s really good.
Also, just curious, what have you seen from Czech Republic?
Here's a list I made for Bulgarian movies:
[Bulgarian classics](https://boxd.it/gsb9Y)
Two favourites of mine that aren't on this list are:
Warm - Топло (Toplo)
Vacation with kids - С деца на море (S deca na more)
And an honourable mention: Bulgar: the movie (Българ: филмът)
You can find almost all of the movies from the list for free on the internet, but I'm not sure about subtitles.
Theres this site - [gledam.bg](http://gledam.bg) that has most of the movies from the list, if not all of them, with English subtitles for pretty cheap.
I'm also working on subtitles for a few movies that are already on YouTube.
A film from this year I recommend is "Vasil", it's a Spanish/Bulgarian production and I personally enjoyed it alot, but the majority of today's Bulgarian movies are sadly not very good...
Tunisia : Silences of the palace.

City of God (Cidade de Deus) for Brazil
This has been in my watchlist for so long because I’ve been waiting for a cinema near me to hopefully do a screening but I might just give in and watch it!
It's on HBO Max
I’m UK based and we don’t get HBO Max here, I haven’t seen it join a uk streaming service I don’t think :(
i’m pretty sure it’s on itv x for free
I can’t see it on itv x but itv x has a really decent selection of films. Thanks for the rec
my bad, i’m sure i saw it on there.
I thought all of hbo max was on now tv?
wait you guys haven’t been pirating this whole time?
I pirate sometimes but I’m always skeptical of doing it with films that aren’t all in english as I’ve had experiences where the subtitles mess up
Do you have a VPN?
>I’ve been waiting for a cinema near me to hopefully do a screening Since you live in the UK I’m gonna guess that this is the Prince Charles Cinema? Or maybe the BFI? Either way us Londoners are lucky as hell that we have classic films cinemas.
The Garden Cinema in Covent Garden had New York New York the other week. Was sad not to be able to make that.
Ashes and Diamonds - Poland Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives - Thailand Come and See - Russia Taste of Cherry - Iran The Battle of Algiers - Algeria Pather Panchali - India City of God - Brazil The Raid - Indonesia
Thanks for the recommendations. Taste of Cherry looks like a film I’d really enjoy!
Hope you enjoy it! I’d also recommend On the Silver Globe for Poland. Although it is incomplete and very weird but so good in a very specific way. Made by Andrej Zulawski the same guy that made the much more famous film: Possession.
All of Kiarostami’s films are top notch. Taste of Cherry is perhaps his 5th or 6th best.
Taste of cherry is phenomenal, can watch on Mubi if you have it
Free month of MUBI if you need it: https://mubi.com/t/ipad/global/-Gp54678
love the Uncle Boonmee rec
Iran - Close-Up Anyway I really like this idea and I know what I'm doing tomorrow, so thanks!
Close Up is phenomenal
I wasn’t sure if anyone else had done it before and I was looking at my stats and thought it was a fun way to get recommendations and branch out more this year :)
I didn't even realize that I could look at the stuff I rated by country, that's awesome!
[удалено]
Yes, it’s in my all time stats which comes with being a pro member
Norway - The Worst Person in the World. Does this count as Norway? That's the language and was filmed there, says it was released first in France, but it's one of the countries of origin. \*shrug\* Watch it anyway!
I'm sure a lot of movies are released first in France (e.g., Cannes premieres).
I’ve had The Worst Person in the world, Reprise and Oslo August 31st in my watchlist for a while as they are all available on mubi but never known what one to watch first. Is it an emotional watch?
they all are.

I don't think any particular order is better than another, so chronological is a good option.
Of course it counts as Norway, it's a Norwegian movie
You should watch The Innocents also from norway too
it does count
No Russia, then Come and See.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film so universally highly rated by everyone I follow. Quickly added to my watchlist
come and see was made when it was the USSR so it won’t show up under russia on the world map
That's why my Russian films weren't showing up! I just watched Amphibian Man and was wondering why my map never changed.
It randomly seems to oscillate on TMDB between Russia/Belarus and the USSR but you are correct
Alternative for Russia: The Return (2003) or Leviathan (2014) by Andrey Zvyagintsev
It's amazing but harrowing. Bit like Schindler's List or something, it just strips your emotions raw.
Wild Tales - Argentina
I recognise a couple of the actors from Pedro Almodóvar films and it’s available for me on mubi so I’ll definitely give this a try!
- The Lure (Poland) - The Raid (Indonesia) - Big Bad Wolves (Israel) - Shutter (Thailand) - Saloum (Senegal)
Is the A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night the 2014 one? It’s the only one that comes up for me but it says USA
[удалено]
It still looks worth a watch though. I’ve added it to my watchlist :)
A lot of "Iranian" films were made elsewhere because Iran has strict censorship laws. Some from south - Mathilukal, Thoovanamthumbikal, Hey Ram. Some from north - Charulata, Maqbool, Ugly.
Monos - Colombia
just spent a few minutes trying to figure out why I recognised the lead and realised it’s from hannah montana 😭 added to my list though!
I can’t really tell if Czechia is checked off on the map so forgive me if it is, but the Czech new wave of the 60s is one of my favourite Eras Daisies - Vera Chytilová (1966) Closely Watched Trains - Jirí Menzel (1966) The Cremator - Juraz Herz (1969)

I'm a big fan of Panel Story and Something Different from Chytilova as well

RRR from India
Indian movies - 3 Idiots - RRR - Lagaan - Gangubai Kathiawadi - My Name is Khan - Drishyam
RRR - India An absolute blast of a movie
