Cex is for dummies
What AI thing is this? I know it's dumb and environmentally destructive, but I'm fascinated by all this machine learning AI text generation stuff. I get that it's only ever going to be used for evil, terrible fan fiction, and porn, but it still fascinates me.
At a guess, GPT-3.
This tec is being used for far more than your examples. For example, it is now used a fair bit in programming to write blocks of code faster. There are many other uses.
Training the models is energy intensive, bit running then is less bad and energy use for this kind of AI is decreasing fast as custom hardware is being developed. The tasks the AI is capable of, arguably, take a lot more energy to do the old fashioned way (i.e. having a human perform the task, with all the energy requirements of a human).
I'm not sure what you mean by it being "dumb". Language based GANs are by far the smartest type of general artificial intelligence we have so far. They are capable of fairly advanced abstract reasoning. It's also a technology that is advancing at an astounding rate.
I've spent some time playing with AI Dungeon and Novel AI, but they don't have the GPT-3 models. AI Dungeon is awful. Novel AI can produce some quality prose, but without a ton of tinkering and editing it doesn't stay on track very well and the prose is kind of soulless.
I'd love to play with a GPT-3 model fine tuned for like narrative fiction and see what it could do.
My nerd dream is playing a text based DnD campaign with a high quality AI dungeon master one day.
But, capitalism will find some way to turn this technology toward evil instead of letting me be a happy nerd.
I don't know about evil, but it's certainly heading *somewhere* important.
There is little doubt that we are going to see AIs that outperform humans in very many ways within the lifetime of people alive today.
In the same way that AI has largely overtaken most trading on the stock market, once AI becomes better at running a business than humans, many businesses will depend heavily on AI for decisions. Likewise, political campaigns and national finance decisions will have more success when directed in part, or in whole by AI.
What this means for capitalism, democracy and totalitarian regimes is not clear.
What it means for workers, voters and citizens isn't clear either.
Much of it may depend on how accessable the benefits of AI are to the working class. If the most effective AI require supercomputers to train, that might make them a tool only of businesses and political groups.
Well, hopefully they give me a text-based DnD campaign as part of the bread and circuses in our glorious AI-driven future dystopian hellscape.
That's more pessimism than is warranted.
Pessimism about the best possible future leads to political apathy. It's a trap.
