After F1!! I am sooo shocked!

Is this mould?
Nice!! I just grabbed some Earl Grey so might try this combo.
I'm experimenting with some Rooibos now.
Thanks for sharing. 🤙
nice! happy brewing !
Doesn’t Earl Gray contain bergamot (often a syrup is used) which perhaps already adds too much flavor &/or excessively unbalancing the ph for a F1? It’s just what I’ve read, but if you’re mouldless then yay!
i’m honestly not sure!! i’ve never had mold or anything and i check my PH when i brew. but that’s really interesting and i’m gonna do research into that
Not a syrup, an extract, and the problem is bergamot is antimicrobial so it could kill your scoby
Mine does that too! Such a lucky brew! Enjoy
Wow! Only after a sugary addition to my F2 have I ever seen anything close to that. What was your recipe with F1?
yeah! it’s crazy this is my 5th brew ever and i’ve never really gotten the fizz i was looking for so this was a nice surprise! I use 3tbsp of Earl Grey to 4 cups of hot water and 1 cup of sugar. I add 8 cups of cold water to that and 2 cups of starter liquid! I left it for 10 days this time! Just made some strawberry lemonade and peach ginger :)
Probably more important than any of these things is your environment. What's the ambient temperature in your brewing location and how much oxygen is available in/out of your brew vessel?
I’d say it’s around 72 degrees all the time. I live in a basement and the booch is in a closet. it’s near the ceiling of the closet so it can catch enough hot air. I live in the mountains so it tends to drop at night though so i keep the heater on. It probably gets good oxygen i use a normal little cloth on top.
Sounds ideal! My batches are nearly always fizzy as yours after about 5 days in F1. My environment has been a lot warmer than yours for the last few months, although lately my nighttime temperatures are a bit cooler than yours (southern hemisphere), and I've noticed the F1 fizz leveling out a bit. Your setup sounds ideal if it's consistent like that year round.
How long was your F1?
