Aaaaand your record is still intact. Your suspension on the other hand....
not so much.
Check your rims for hairline cracks as well.
Nothing like cold weather maintenance to make you think.
Mistakes happen. Glad to hear it wasn't too bad!
I ran over something on a highway exit in Georgia during the summer. I had cars zooming past me at 75 on the left and 45-55 on the right (exit ramp). It was 95 degrees and I was in shirt and tie. Probably 120+ on the asphalt. Probably still better than doing so in the Chicago winter, though.
Good on you not trying to turn with the road and just barreling on. Probably saved you rolling.
Why do Americans always call wheels tires?
Those are different names for things. We both use wheel and tyre(tire) but Americans always say changing tyres, when they mean wheels. What do you call the things that hold the wheel on? Tire nuts?
Because people change their tires all the time in America? I did it last week. I didn't change my wheels, we don't have any money lol.
we do have a song called "the wheels on the bus" which u might be a fan of :-)
Do Americans sing "the tires on the bus"
We had a lot of cars and motorcycles growing up, and we ended up buying a tire mount system.
So much cheaper and convenient to mount and balance tires at home.
The kit was around $500 IIRC, which paid for itself in no time.
No. No its not. I blame ur shitty music.
It could have been worse.
Edit: Aight I get it, my bad chill now.
Chill, OPs aware that they fucked up and could have killed someone. Let them learn, it's clear they did that by posting here
Posting your fuckups here is like going to confession
I got fucking torn to pieces when I posted a video of me hitting a deer in a rented camaro going in the neighborhood of 100MPH
Right but clearly I knew it was stupid since I posted it to r/IdiotsInCars, plus it was back when I was 19. These motherfuckers were acting like I did it yesterday and was defending it lmao
Doesn’t really matter how old you are. 100 mph in a freaking neighborhood is just dangerous and negligent. There’s nothing to defend about. You could have killed a kid.
It wasn’t in a neighborhood sir. The only building nearby was the high school and this was in the middle of the night during the summer. But nice assumption
It’s not assumption when you say neighborhood in your comment. But nice, it was in a school zone, wayyyy better.
Look man, all I can tell you is this guy started off the title saying they're aware they fucked up and in all their comments they've responded with pretty clear awareness of the fact that what they did is wrong.
I'm sorry you got torn to pieces over a post where you were being self-aware. I don't control other people on the sub, and yes, if you were self-aware the anger doesn't sound justified. All I can say for sure though is that you're probably the only person mad at OP here, no need to get angry.
What's wrong with my question?
It’s more so you saying, you could have killed someone or died there. It came off as rude. Obviously op knows that he/she messed up that’s why it’s posted on this sub. It’s a minor learning experience that no one got hurt at.
I see, my bad. I've seen a few accidents from people that do what op did. I didn't want to offend.
It's a bit extreme. He wasn't going that fast.
It’s usually a fair question, but he’s going a bit faster than folks who would be in that right lane AND they’d be slowing down for that turn, so even if there was someone in the right turn lane he wouldn’t have hit them.
Unless the other car was also going too fast for the exit, which would have made them both the idiot, there's no actual risk to cars which were already passed and going a slower rate of speed.
Use your noggin.
Seems there would be much more risk to someone Infront of him. Anyone behind would have been going much slower.
It's called tailgating. That would be another idiotincar
Don't edit your posts without leaving original comment either. Enjoy the downvotes newbie.
I meant to delete it, as I saw the video for the 2nd time and since the roads are icy then I could believe people would be going slowly, but so what if there were 2 idiots? it still could have happened. Enjoy your day/night too.
Each driver should be driving at a safe speed in order to stop properly in case of anything happening in front of them. Just because OP wasn't paying attention doesn't mean someone behind them should hit them. In most states a driver that rear ends another driver is responsible for the accident.
Glad you didn’t hurt anyone
Dude, don't lose hope. You're gonna knock someone down tomorrow!
Well not with that attitude you won't.
Everyone makes mistakes now and then. Glad you are ok and wish you learn from it and drive more carefully.
When you have negative thoughts, try to frame it as "Oh, that's just the reminder to drive more carefully", since beating yourself up will help noone, but driving carefully will.
The fact you’re beating yourself up about it shows it was just a mistake :)
Hey, this was a cheap lesson. Remember it. We've all done really thoughtless things while driving...
No worries I’m glad no one was hurt. I bet you woke up after this and wasn’t tired anymore 😂
Adrenaline is one hell of a drug.
I dozed off for a second one time on a long drive and snapped to in the next lane. I pulled over to take a nap but after that I had never felt more awake in my life
should worry a little bit and learn how corners work, they wouldn't have made that even in the dry
You got through it and learned. I am gonna go with you are a god. Thanks for being good.
Wow you weren't even close to making it! But glad you and the car are ok.
Anything fucked up underneath? Oil pan might be hurting.
Wheels might be in trouble too - depending on how sharp of a curb that was and how much snow helped act like a ramp.
Edit: OP replied below they lost two tires.
Sucks for them I suppose.
Not good music to listen to tired. You need something loud and obnoxious. Doesn’t matter if you don’t like it, it’s better than hurting yourself or someone else.
I remember driving down a gravel road faster than I should have and hitting a pothole, bouncing up, and coming down on another pothole on the same wheel. Yea that tire was B L O W N. Moral of the story is buy the tire insurance at the shop. Oh and don't drive fast down yee yee gravel roads or that new tire replacement will get mounted on a bent rim.
Pure luck. You hadn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of checking your wing mirrors with that crazy lane change.
I love people that admit to their mistakes publicly like this. Kudos to you sir, hope the damage wasn't too bad
In OPs defence. I can 100% understand how this happened. The road is poorly lit and reflective with the rain. The turn in the road is obstructed by that mound of earth and very abrupt for what looks like a turn off a main road. I'd be surprised if this hasn't happened before.
I can see why you’re tired, that music would get me sleepy too
Something i've learned: say that it was you who did the stupid thing and people will even admit to doing the same and that it's not a big deal. Upload it without that info and you'll have people people tell you that you could've killed someone.
Which makes sense. If he doesn't admit all those things, we have to teach him a lesson - by a crucifixion in the comments. :)
Accidents happen and no one got hurt.
I'd call that a win.
Well it worked. You might need 2 new tires but it worked. Well done.
We encourage self-reporting. We give you a pass, but only because nobody was hurt. No harm; no foul. But you were close on this one.
To be fair the exit doesn't seem to be signaled very properly and the turn is quite sharp. Good thing no one was injured
True, but in reality he jumped lanes last minute, and drove as if he was on summer tires in an autocross, instead of icy conditions :x
Glad OP can admit their mistake, but that driving style was NOT safe at all (especially for the conditions). But he knows that now.
No ones saying OPs not an idiot. Just that that exit isn't designed very well.
Meh, he still jumped 2 lanes to turn, and at a very high speed for the conditions.
There can be multiple reasons for an accident.
Yeah something that turns off that sharply from a roadway like that should have some type of physical object blocking people from turning in this late. Not making roadways idiot-proof is asking for accidents.
Where I live there is a similar exit but off of a 75 mph highway. Except its a straight up hairpin turn and very tight. You need to get over and slow down very quickly because there isn't a lot of lane to do so with. Slowing down on the actual highway a bit works if there is nobody there but most people are doing 80/85 already. Shit is a nightmare that I just avoid and take other exits.
Sometimes I wonder how many people have crashed there. Mostly locals would take that exact exit so maybe not as many as I expect.
Thank you for not posting 40 seconds of meaningless highway driving before the action.
You still made the exit, in a way.
No, you missed an exit...
Great road design
With that music, I would have missed the exit too.
Well, you didn't miss it; you hit that thing straight on.
Thank you for owning up to your idiocy.
*Task failed successfully...*
For what it's worth: beautiful recovery
How to get Christmas cards from your local alignment shop step 1
It's a light second thing, but next time if you are turning like that and you know there is no possible way you are going to make it. Turn your wheels back straight on to the curb vs at an angle. It's a lot less dmg to the vehicle.
Icy conditions suck.
I actually missed my exit today took the next exit ended up taking the next exit and than that exit took me to the exit my previous exit would of taken me to it was like exitception.
It was like a loop lol a weird loop that makes no sense in my head but it worked prob only added 1 extra minute to my drive.
What happened was I wasn’t thinking because I was thinking about the car I saw crashes in a interception and than I was thinking about the dude who nearly crashed into me earlier today lol.
Guess your not out of time
Why would you even attempt that?
Driver parents: sometimes you just to make your own path Timmy.
No I think he missed
Coming in hot!
Route 59 in Naperville?
A bad driver never misses a turn, but good drivers sometimes do
My buddy told me one time to turn here. So I did I ended up in a front yard. Granted it was foggy out. I was just glad I didn’t hit the phone poll.
dang I’m sorry this happened, lesson learned
Jesus. Were you listening to the club mix of Everywhere at the End of Time? No wonder you were in a stupor.
Glad you're safe and nobody was injured.
I saw this coming from a mile away. You suck!
Fast travel irl
Gran Turismo style.
Yup, I'd say you hit it alright.
Nah that’s just a speed run strat
You took a BITE out of that curb my friend !
I hate the winter rains! Almost as much as the summer snows!
Next time, just pass it and turn around.
Dude i did roughly the same thing
Got off a double and a half shift at work it was i think 12am or so heavy snowfall and i totally misjudged my stopping distance for my exit which is at a traffic light turning right.....i slide right up the hill by it onto the parking lot of the store there lol
Thankfully no one was around and my truck survived it but hey mistakes happen as long as you got home safe and no one was hurt you learn from it and move on....granted you move on with a little more caution for the weather lol
nice little shortcut right there
Tires and alignment cost after?
Been there done that. Glad you didn't hit anything during that lesson! My car didn't have that same luck :(:
Could've been way worse! Lucky it appears your driving something with at least a little clearance and not a slammed vehicle.
And you still haven't!
8 for the entry but a4 for the exit overall in gonna have to give it a 6 Jim
Sweet shortcut Schumacher
It was a close call but I’m sure there are bigger idiots out there telling you to hold their beer. You came out safe so it’s water under the bridge now 👊🏼
That'd be $1200 in new suspension parts sir.
Assuming you were going that way you just took a short cut
Probably would have made it had it not been icy
Missed, no you are Batman and had pressing business. Nice short cut :)
Damn pretty useless huh
HE WENT ZOOOOOOOOMMMM
VROOM VROOM ZOOM VROOM ZOOM ZOOM WOOSH BOOM VROOM BOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOOOOOOOOOOMMM
Task failed successfully.
It was really hard to see that exit coming on, but nobody got hurt. Slow down when in the exiting lane.
My guess is when it's dry that approach works fine. Idk in Jersey there are driveways off 55mph highways, so it's not uncommon to have a very short deceleration lane.
Looks like a super abrupt exit.
If you were able to drive on I would've believed you took a shortcut on an icy road and drove on.
He knew a shortcut, so??
There's something about the music in the background and the slow driving forward after the accident that makes me giggle
Never met a sign that didn't have an impact.
AAA isn't just a company that cleans up crashed and broken down cars.
They also run professional drivers ed classes. They taught me to drive, and a I'm far better driver than every idiot on reddit.
NICE SAVE! Nobody saw a thing.
Hahaha bro I almost did that in the same spot my aunt lives in that little neighborhood right there lol
Why you drivin so fast
Wow that turn looks very unmarked and at night I could see how it could be easy to miss. Good thing nobody was around for you to hit, or to witness the embarrassment lol
Yea it's weird in the USA there are a lot of sharp exits like this where the exit is almost a 90deg turn off of a high speed roadway. They are much more rare in Canada and I have personally been surprised (dangerously) when I've encountered them unexpectedly in the USA. .
There is a turn lane and a bright yellow sign telling that there is a 90 degree turn approaching.
Since when did cars stop being able to do 90 degree turns at 40mph on icy roads?
Maybe… slow down in the SNOW!
It’s the hypnotic music too…
Dude I actually don’t mean to a dick and I hope you’re okay but…… what happened?
They didn't slow down enough
I'm really confused by the music selection. It sounds like music from a classic western saloon.
I’d be rushing if i had to listen to whatever you had coming out of the radio
I thought I heard my wife.
Usually it's her that makes me never miss an exit.
Missed opportunity to use Mario kart music after hitting the median.
Good God, even in rain that was too fast
+5 seconds penalty
I live in Canada and one year we had early snow, the friend that was driving me had not yet instaled their winter tires. In an exit, he lost control of the car. The rear tires got caught in ice and the car spun around the front wheels and made a 360. Driver regained control and kept his cool but I was clutching the backseat like my life depended on it.
So winter times are unpredictable. Glad you were safe.
Well, you can't blame the music. That doesn't sound too bad. Maybe you just wanted to take a shortcut??
Just curious… is that Boomtown in Verdi Nevada?
🤷🏽♂️ i feel like ur one of the poeple that complained a while back as to why people turn the volume of the music down and u made fun of them by saying, “so they can see better”. It was actually so the excess noise from the radio didnt cloud their immediate judgement by adding distortion to their thought process….
Username checks out
is there a 19th century saloon in your car?
At this point, why even shoot for the exit. Just go around again.
I hope you fucked your car up. You get what you deserve and now you pay the price idiot
Drive into a wall before you kill someone.
Over a solid white. Hard into the exit. Over frozen slush. What other outcome was possibly expected? This shit doesnt go well for people who do it on sunny dry days. That median insult your mother or do you just hate your rims?
Yeah you were going way too fast for those conditions.
why did you think you could hit it at that speed 😂😂😂
Sound warning please, jesus.
Glad you're okay. Thankfully it was a cheap lesson.
Man..... what's that white shit on the ground? Looks slick.
