Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway coming to Netflix

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway coming to Netflix

JaguarDaSaul

Copypasting my response from a different post here, with some edits. Well I'll guess I'll be seeing the home video version before I see the theatrical version then (different sound mixing). ~~Before~~ Since others have come in here crying about it being only avialable on netflix it is worth noting that the gundaminfo site (you know, the one run by sunrise, the folks who made and own the movie) states that it will be "exclusively streamed on Netflix in areas outside of Japan" rather than being "exclusively available on" meaning that we will likely get a home video release (dvd/bd) so it won't be locked on netflix forever. No mention of dub though I suspect the global pandemic probably had a hand to play in the lack of it, hopefully sunrise will eventually give it a dub. Also no mention of the other 2 HF films going on netflix.

redrivaldrew

The dam is breaking gang! Keep it coming, Netflix!

Eggsalad-war-crime

the Gun-dam?

Ccccchess

Amuro, I order you to launch Gun-damn!

entropicdrift

I, too, enjoy the dub of the OG movie trilogy

ReverendHobo

If your Bright ain’t British is he even Bright at all?

Spudtron98

I really do think that he should've stayed that way.

Cagliostro81

Right? It really works for the character.

DrasticKnight

Steve Blum's Char was a sight to behold.

Cagliostro81

Still the best English version of Char imo.

redrivaldrew

Hahaha that didn't even occur to me

SlinginRopes

Is other stuff coming to Netflix? Did some Gundam recently get added?

silver54clay

All of 0079 and CCA got added recently.

Rebel_bass

Waaaaaat.

JAKZILLASAURUS

Just the 0079 movie trilogy, not the original series.

Bamres

Not in canada that I can see, time to fire up the ol vpn

wormsandweirdfishes

They will be available in Canada later this month!

UncausedGlobe

Wait the original series and the film trilogy are both coming? I thought it was CCA and the original movies.

JAKZILLASAURUS

Yeah just the movies, no idea why they said all of 0079.

redrivaldrew

The original movie trilogy and CCA are coming June 18th

an_innoculous_table

Pretty exciting news. I don't think anyone thought it would be coming over so soon, or through such an accessible format.

MV6000

That’s exactly why I’m so hyped.

geometrical

I was actually looking forward to a US theatrical release, seeing NT was a lot of fun. It also would have been a great excuse to go back to theaters! Still great news though, I definitely didn’t expect to see this movie for at least a couple more months.

Owyn_Merrilin

Seriously. I'm vaccinated and besides that in a state that barely locked down to begin with, so the theaters are open. I was really looking forward to seeing this in a real theater.

JohnTheMod

Same. We can always just bother Fathom Events about it and see what happens. I’ve already messaged them and am waiting to hear back.

Tonetron0093

The term exclusive streaming rights doesn't necessarily bar a theatrical release, depends on the contract type. There's still hope. I never expected char's counter attack in theaters, but it happened, even if it was only 2 showings.

PushThePig28

I’d personally rather see it on my couch on Netflix for one low monthly fee I already pay where I can pause when I want, smoke a bowl when I want, eat a dinner I made while watching, and rewatch to my hearts content rather than have to go to the movies. Plus it’s so soon!!!

Tonetron0093

Honestly, I hate theaters, but my wife loves them. I'm going to see it at home, as she has zero interest in gundam after catching the hyper cynical end of thunderbolt: December sky. after doing the research, it's truly a Netflix exclusive. So my prior comment is ultramoot.

Wheeler-The-Dealer

So...Zeta and ZZ soon?

cstrez

Yeah, kinda weird that they got the 3 MSG compilations and CCA, but not Zeta

[deleted]

[удалено]

cstrez

? That’s what I said. CCA and the 3 MSG compilations are coming, but Netflix didn’t get Zeta(or ZZ) to bridge the gap between the 2.

JinTheBlue

Sorry misread your post.

battlemechpilot

Never ever.

Wheeler-The-Dealer

I can believe.

MechaMat91

[confirmed for July 1st](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxnPP5TLeU) holy shit that is REALLY soon!

BoltTusk

Well, a surprise for sure. But a welcome one

DuckAHolics

Damn and I just canceled my Netflix so I could pick Hulu back up since it had more gundam.

Captain_Kuhl

Oh damn, nice! I'm so used to shit going the way Shaman King is, where you have to actively avoid spoilers the entire time if you're not pirating it, I had already accepted that I'd know the best parts of the movie before they even released it.

_ahnnyeong

Hell yes!!! Can't wait to watch it

the_thinnwhiteduke

NO WAY 😭😭😭

Red-Zaku-

awwww yeah!

thevampirelematt

Honestly floored there are a few complaining about this on social media announcement posts You really want to wait a year to see it?

wtrmlnjuc

Oh my god yes Bandai/Sunrise is doing real distribution?!

ofsaltyvanilla

Oh yessssssssssssssssss

MechaMat91

So they just said "fuck it" and gave it to Netflix instead of going theatrical or is it an "everywhere except Japan" kind of deal? Anyway I'm not complaining, this means we won't have to wait like 2 years for the BD release.

ElPrestoBarba

I believe it’s an everywhere except Japan deal, or at least in America it’ll be straight to Netflix

Seraphem666

Could be netflix is paying for it. This shouldnt be really suprising when netflix is getting the legendary/sunrise gundam movie that is being made

PracticableSolution

It’s all about who pays the most.

HoleinEagle

Sunrise had their sites on the Western audience already and given the pandemic, licensing the streaming rights to Netflix in coordination of the Japan theatrical release is a smart move. Let's be honest here and say that Netflix is a bigger and better gateway to western audiences than literally any other streaming site in the U.S. Theatrical release in the states is a death sentence with covid. You'd get FAR more viewers via Netflix than a theatrical release where it would honestly be seen by less people than most. Netflix at least has a database of users that you can say "if we release here, we'd have a better chance of hitting a wider audience than say, a movie theater where most likely some selfish people who aren't vaccinated decides to watch a movie which in turn forces the idea that watching movies in public during a catastropic pandemic is still raging on is a literal bad idea. Netflix is literally the best move right now.

hoochyuchy

It's half a shame since I really enjoyed NT when it came to theaters.

Devastator5042

I'd imagine wed have to wait until after the theatrical release in Japan but I could see a Fall release for the US

bipbophil

July first dude

RoLoLoLoLo

The movie gets released today, June 11, in Japanese cinemas.

Devastator5042

Oh FR? I figured it would have been delayed again just to fuck with everyone

isthisusernamecorny

I like the idea of theatrical releases but this is epic!!! Narrative was a banger in theaters.

BlueRex1985

This is very good news... Wasn't expecting this, since we also will get the original trilogy movie and CCA soon too

Darkirewolf

I hope that this is a good sign that they will take the Gundam movie they are helping produce with Legendary seriously and be better than the last live action failure.

Seraphem666

Pretty sure that movie is already announced to be heading to netflix

Darkirewolf

I mean quality wise. If it is, it'll be easier to watch but I bet Legendary wants it in theaters as well

TheKingofJinga

Sweet, now I can see it a hell of a lot sooner!

PhuturePhil

Now it makes sense why the MSG movies and Char's Counterattack are coming to the service as well. I hope they add Zeta on there next.

daveyboydavey

Just did a search on my (US) account and it comes up, no date. 6/18 a big day though as the original MSG (movies I assume, they’re listed as MSG1, 2, etc.) and CCA are coming. So a week from tomorrow then.

overlord_vas

Hey I like seeing easy ways to watch this stuff offically in high quality

MitchMatch92

So I plan on watching this but does anyone know if I need to watch Unicorn first? I've seen most of UC till MS team, but I'm trying to go in realease order. And I'm at Gundam X right now

J765

Probably not. They advertised it as a sequel to CCA.

MitchMatch92

Ty

HoleinEagle

I'd say no mostly because Unicorn's story doesn't intersect with Hathaway. Hathaway is strictly coming from CCA so you' probably want to watch Z and ZZ + CCA before watching Hathaway.

MitchMatch92

Yea I've seen all from 79 to victory so far of the main series so I'm good nice

Exia_91

I would disagree with a lot of the comments here. Timeline wise, this is shortly after Gundam Unicorn and Narrative, which are part of the UC timeline. I 100% would watch them first. Both aren’t long.

bereysm91

I hope it's same day or soon after

fushiao

Its July 1st https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxnPP5TLeU

CollectionNo7827

it’s probably because they’re recording the English Dub or translating it to other languages, same deal with Godzilla: Singular Point or Beastars S2

Seraphem666

Pretty much the deal with all there anime

dcgh96

> “This video is private.”

fushiao

Weird, it wasn't this afternoon

dcgh96

I know the announcement video is on GundamInfo’s YT page, however.

SadArchon

now thats some good news

dp101428

So uh, given that it's coming so soon... is there a recommended list of shows/films to watch to understand the background of this. I've seen Unicorn/Narrative but those seem fairly separate from this (even though chronologically being the most recent?), as watching the trailer for this film I felt fairly lost. I thought I'd have more time to get background knowledge on this lol.

xhrit

This is a followup to chars counterattack, which follows msg, z and zz.

Pathogen188

I think the only real essential viewings will be the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) and Char’s Counterattack, both of which are coming to Netflix this month. However, I’d also watch both Zeta Gundam and it’s sequel Double Zeta. Not only are they both very good and they’re the direct sequels to the original Gundam, but they’ll explain some of what happened between MSG and CCA.

catboy_supremacist

Zeta is the best Gundam show but as far as understanding UC timeline it's like... "well, all of those people died, so moving on, back to Amuro and Char...."

Pathogen188

Yeah, Zeta’s high casualty rate really limited how many characters could be brought back. Although, again, that’s more on CCA for failing to capitalize on Zeta and ZZ considering the Titans and the Gryps was are why Londo Bell is so neutered, which allows Char and Neo Zeon to build more power than they otherwise would have been able to. Not that CCA ever makes that clear.

catboy_supremacist

all that work Haman put into rebuilding Zeon just so Char could literally run it into the ground in an excessive attempt at demanding his crush's attention

abstandbro

Amazing News! With 0079 Trilogie and CC on Netflix we would need Z for newbies to understand Hathaway..

Eleascar

https://youtu.be/MzxnPP5TLeU On this YouTube video at the end it says July 1st not sure how legit this is though. EDIT: Should be legit didn't realize when posting it was from official Netflix account.

MS-06_Borjarnon

> not sure how legit this is though. Why would Netflix lie about that?

Eleascar

I put a edit on my post got it off twitter and quickly just commented it on here didn't realize it was uploaded by a official Netflix account.

Clollin

Video is private now.

WaitingToTravel2020

Yeah I noticed that as well, it wasn't yesterday... wtf?

frodo_sucks

"It's a Gundam!!!"

_NERV-01_

So excite!!!

weskerfan5690

Will they have a dubbed version?

BeholdtheDizzy

I'm not seeing anything saying there will be a dubbed version so I assume not at this time.

UncausedGlobe

I think it's unlikely that there will not be a dub.

Raptor8415

Is it going to be in Netflix prison, though?

JaguarDaSaul

No, sunrise has said that it is "exclusively streaming on netflix" which is different from being "exclusively available on netflix"

Ape-on-a-Spaceball

As in, it hits Netflix and then doesn’t get released on disc forever? I’m concerned about that too

Raptor8415

More that Netflix licenses it but it doesn't get an official western release on Netflix for like a year after the Japanese release. Not getting a physical release on disc is also a concern though.

JaguarDaSaul

The netflix announcement is for outside of Japan, HF has already hit Japanese theaters.

Ape-on-a-Spaceball

Just copped the theater limited edition pack!

sn00dmasterK

IT'S HAPPENING!! Everyone STAY CALM

anotherguy56

Is there any news on when it'll be coming?

fushiao

July 1st

anotherguy56

That soon? Hot damn!

foremangrillalert

So excited for this!

TheJohnSB

Amazing

Cavaquillo

Netflix* outside of Japan!?

Yatsugami

Oh my god

MightyMol

Honestly it’s a great time to be a poor gundam fan lol

CivilC

Lol @ individuals who thought this wasn't coming to the US anytime soon. Gundam fans rejoice!!!!

the1whocan

A blessing from the lord

Quiddity131

Awesome news! Any thoughts on if I can go straight into this from CCA or do I have to watch the post Unicorn stuff like Narrative first?

HoleinEagle

Unicorn is most likely unnecessary considering the novels only cared about Tomino's work and not novels, I'd say you only really need to know 0079, Z, ZZ, and CCA to know what's going on with this trilogy

saikyan

Really hope this is better than NT. I get that this is based on a manga but Hathaway is probably the last UC character I would want to build a film around. I hope I have to apologize for this comment after I see it.

HoleinEagle

Without a doubt, if they follow the novel through and through (which from what I've heard they follow to a T) then Hatahways Flash is going to be great. Unlike NT which was just painting newtypes as essentially modern Jedis rather than a higher form of being.

RX-93_Nu_Gundam

Theaters are also still shut down in my country, so this is a good news. (I hope my country's Netflix branch is also included, if not, I'll gonna use VPN)

lelouch312

You go Netflix!

Whiplash_GT

Awesome news!!

bangbangracer

While this is a good thing, I need to put on the cynicism hat for a bit. Will it effect physical media releases? Does this mean it won't see a physical release considering how Netflix is with their licenses? Does this mean I'll have to get a Netflix account again? I gave up having a Netflix account a while ago because they were losing licenses left and right and none of the originals interested me anymore.

J765

Netflix usually has a two year exclusivity deal. So after two years disc releases will be possible most of the time.

fistchrist

I AM FULLY ERECT

Sigvulcanas

Why? Netflix is garbage .

JaguarDaSaul

Because it's pretty much the only streaming platform available worldwide, and it also happens to have the largest user base. Given the difficulties sunrise had in getting the film into Japanese theaters putting it on netlfix skips that hurdle.

Ape-on-a-Spaceball

I wonder when we can buy the Blu-ray

dornwolf

Man I had hoped this would happen. Now just need shin ultra man.

Dr_Tot

That’s so soon!

sneakatone

Does this mean it will be dubbed?

DR_ZERO_

Yessasaaaaaasas

EmotionalAffect

Wow! Awesome news!

colonelheero

Wow. First Sailor Moon, then Gundam. It seems the Eva movies aren't far away. Great news.

FleshlightExMortis

Does this mean that we may get a Netflix produced ZZ dub?

Dio5000

>Does this mean that we may get a Netflix produced ZZ dub? Idk if I would watch that or not

FleshlightExMortis

If only for the HD remaster

Bonna_the_Idol

this is great! i can legally view it before buying

moekeisetsu

Netflix you little sweet sweet

PkdB0I

Never thought they would actually release it in Netflix rather than much later.

justanotherkerbal

Does anyone have any information on if Australian Netflix will get it as well? Last time I checked, we don't even have the MSG trilogy or CCA.

UltraMagnaminous

I heart Anne Hathaway

mashpotatojohnson

YES!!!

diablo1900

where does this series fall in the viewing order?

theweebdweeb

0079 > Zeta > ZZ > CCA > Hathaway

Saiaxs

0079-0080-0083-Zeta-ZZ-Char’s Counterattack-Unicorn-Narrative-Hathaway’s Flash-F91-Crossbone-Victory You can skip Narrative though. And I’m not even sure HF acknowledges Unicorn since it was originally made before it, or if F91, Crossbone and Victory are still considered canon either

Mechapebbles

0080, 0083, Unicorn, and Narrative are all side stories that don't really have much of any impact on the broader UC Timeline of events and are not required viewing to understand the Universal Century's main events. Crossbone is non-canonical and also not even something you can watch. F91 and Victory, being Late-UC, have almost nothing to do with the Early-UC shows.

Saiaxs

Unicorn is a direct sequel to CCA and has characters from 0079 through CCA in them, it is in no way a side story And I included 0080 and 0083 because they’re great and 0083 directly sets up the villains of a great portion of Zeta

Mechapebbles

>Unicorn is a direct sequel to CCA and has characters from 0079 through CCA in them, it is in no way a side story It is absolutely a side story. Just because you include characters and it takes place directly after something, doesn't mean that the events depicted have any long lasting bearing on anything. Nothing that happens in Unicorn has any bearing on how the events of the Universal Century unfolds. In fact, the entire scenario and the Unicorn itself gets swept under the rug like it never happened. >0083 directly sets up the villains of a great portion of Zeta You know what sets up the villains of Zeta? Zeta. Zeta itself explains in full where the Titans came from and why they're bad. All 0083 does is fill out an explanation that Zeta already gave us. Here's a test for if something is a side story: if you remove it from the timeline, does the timeline lose any coherency? Zeta explains that the Titans were formed to police the Earth Sphere in the wake of the One Year War and to hunt down Zeon remnants. We don't need to have seen that there was some secret war between MSG and Zeta that was classified and covered up to know that the Titans still would have been a thing with or without it. Here's another test if something is a side story: if it's made way way way after the fact, by a completely different author no less, to fill-in the gaps between the stories, then it's probably a side story. You might like Unicorn, 0080, and 0083 a lot. They might be great shows. But just because you like them and they're good, doesn't mean they're suddenly not side stories anymore.

Saiaxs

I’ll agree to disagree

NRseekerr

this is nuts!!!!!!!!!! if it was for Netflix , we would wait for at least one year for the BD to release.

Akdhar

"SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!" - Bruce Banner

RGM96XJesta

POGGERS

Gundam_NeonOmen

CGI and Gundam don't mix.

Clollin

Unicorn was beautiful. I agree that if you consider Seed to be CGI.. it didn't look that good.

saikyan

It’s all in the implementation, but I get it. Sunrise does that distracting thing where the mecha don’t integrate seamlessly into the rest of the animation.

JazRejalde

Wait, hathaway's flash has been released in theaters? POGGERS!!!
