first-timer here, can I watch The Origin OVAs right after I finish 0079?

forget all the universe bullshit and watch it, that's what I did. It's absolutely great.

Most of the other posts of people asking watch order say to start with the original and “Origin is not actually canon!” However Origin is great and gives the original series a lot more emotional depth in my opinion. I don’t think I would’ve cared nearly as much about 0079 if I just went release order.

I found that watching Origin first then the original 1979 series the best way as Origin ends just as the old series begins

GM_for_Life

Absolutely, the anime version is a prequel to the original series and ties in only with it.

Origin and the Original TV series are completely different things though. Origin is a retelling of the UC timeline that doesn't tie into the TV series at all.

GM_for_Life

That is The Origin manga (which I think is fantastic BTW). But as far as The Origin anime is concerned, Sunrise is more or less treating it as a prequel to the original series even if not all parts of the continuity match up 100%.

SouthAmeric4n

Sunrise is more or less treating it as a prequel to the original series No, they aren't.

Lord_Igniz

No, watch Origins before 0079, will make the latter series far more enjoyable and understandable.

That order is pretty (excuse my language) Sussy if I do say so myself. I have found that watching 0079 before The Origin greatly enhances the experience.

vektar2

Two different universes, so you’ll be fine to watch it after.

SupposedlyShony

Without explaining why you would say this, this is an incredibly confusing take for a newbie

It's not. The Universal Century gundam shows just play a little fast and loose with the smaller details. For example, the 0079 TV show states that the the guntank is a new prototype. But in the Origin movies the Federation already has a guntank predecessor. It's a rule-of-cool thing. But make no mistake, it's nowhere near as crazy as something like Leiji Matsumoto properties (Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, etc).

The Gundam Origin OVA is a complete retelling of the Original Gundam Timeline. It has nothing to do with the original TV series. To get a full understanding of the Origin time line. I would Suggest reading the Gundam Origin Manga.
