Fun fact I’m from Iceland and their is a mythological creature that’s name is gryla it’s Lynda like the mother of the Santa klaus she would kidnap kids if they did not behave
It was just an hour or so but holy shit is it boring. It’s a 10/10 game so far but that entire sequence reminds me of the swapping between MJ and Miles in Spider-Man PS4.
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. It did drag on longer than I was expecting. Not bad by any means, but definitely the weakest part of the game for me so far
Ik it sucks for gameplay reasons, but I wish Atreus would’ve said something like” my dad can’t die, hes killed hundreds of gods, he even beat THOR( even tho skkk u know,WE know, but he don’t.. All he knows is thor and him left and only kratos returned) like those little things would make me be like ah yeah, I forgot… im playing as one of the most badass characters in gaming history.
But no, LOOK YALLAS HUNGRY! Accept the fate of your fathers feath blah blah. Like the mf killed the sisters of fate, went back in time, he’s died before let’s relax with this fake foreshadowing and state facts please.
How would he say that when he doesn’t even know?
Also sorry but the game would be unbearable if they kept repeating every five seconds Kratos is a badass duh
Actually all you fucking hear is how kratos is going to die, and nobody denies it except Atreus so I think it’d be pretty cool to hear, as a matter of fact, Atreus is the ONLY mf who’s doesn’t talk about kratos being a badass, not trying to argue but this is obvious.
Well of COURSE everyone talks about it because it’s worrying to them. So far the jotun had been absolutely precise and very correct about their prediction
Also atreus’ denial of his dad’s death isn’t based on Kratos being badass but the fear of losing him
You don’t need the character to tell you he is badass, countless games already did and hell in this game he does badass shit after the other
Really it’s also cool to use the character for other purpose, for ex how the idea of his death impact people
I can see where your coming from, but I really just wanted the giant little girl to realize who he is because she dont, it’s like in movies when you see the obvious killer behind the protagonist and they’re to oblivious to turn around, even tho WE know, it’s cool for the dumbass characters to learn when they DONT know if that makes sense.
Well how is she a dumbass if she doesn’t even know him? It’s like idk man you’re blaming the story for making sense, she has no way of knowing who Kratos is so of course she treats him just as “a dad who is going to die”, and at that time she is too worried about herself and Loki leaving to do some investigation
I get your point but I don’t see how doing anything else would make sense. If anything she is going to meet Kratos eventually and will know the new him, I doubt Loki told her “hi my dad is the ghost of Sparta”
I think having her treat him as something special with so little Info about him would be too fanservicey for no reason
Just mah opinion
I know where you’re coming from, I might redact my opinion, when I finish the game, it’s just like a character/story moment.. one second they can’t stop talking about his badassery, another they’re close lipped and don’t want to say a damn thing.
Oh If you’re not very far into the game I think your view will change. It’s like a movie, we can’t judge without full picture
But considering your complaint I think you’ll be satisfied with what’s to come lol
Am i the only one who liked this part? It was really nice to see them bond maybe a bit slow but I loved their acting and also loved playing as Atreus. The combat is just really smooth.
I enjoyed it I just thought it went on a bit too long but now I’m getting used to the long as fuck missions lol. Whoever said the main story takes 20-25 hours was way off
How far in is this section when they’re in the woods? I’ve just got to Angrboda’s treehouse and i’m curious if i still have a long way to go before the end.
I haven’t even finished yet but I’ve put in a significant amount of time over the last two days - Meeting angrboda feels like forever ago and I still feel like I’m in the middle of the story. It’s insane, the game is massive
How many hours in are you? I'm 18 hours in and just now got to (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!) >!Muspelheim with Thor!< and still feel like im nowhere close to the end lol
i feel like the people who hated this has absolutely no patience for story or character development, they just want to smack shit as Kratos which sucks because it's important to the plot
Normally I don’t like these sorts of sequences but I actually really liked this one, the environment is pretty and felt really big to me in a way that some realms didn’t so far (Alfheim feels so tiny to me in a way that bothers me), and I think the last race they do before you leave is very cute and moving. The wretch nests could’ve been skipped though lol
It's 3:30 am, like 2 hours ago I was repeating every 10 minutes, this must be it right? Jesus christ I'm going to sleep and this slog is not even over yet 🙄
I literally just finished it, I was so ready to go back to playing as Kratos again. I liked the story bits but holy fuck the wretch nest section was already way past the point of tedium. The main boss fight was neat I thought. I need less pupper crying noises though.
I am almost done with this part of the game and I am so over it. I just don’t care about this pace anymore. At first I thought it was cool. Now I am wanting it to be over with. I would have rather spent more time walking with sindri. He is fun to talk to. I have heard her say “a little bit of this and a little bit of that” a million times. I appreciate what they did with this section but it could have been cut down by 3/4ths of its size. The last game I left wanting more of that area. I love exploring in the game but this area is bad.
Fr man,I started it and it was interesting to see parts of jotunheim and it went deeper in the story with Atreus and his animal powers, but all the collecting things was so boring and there was no reason for it to take that long,it was fun when going to Midgard as Atreus as that was shorter and freshened up the game but here it was too long.
Midgard was a lot of fun. I love Atreus and sindri’s talks. I would rather have more with them than the time spent in jotunhiem. It was cool at first but then it turned into this never ending quest to look for stuff. We didn’t even use the seeds and stuff we looked for. It was pointless. I kinda dread going through that on my second play through. I didn’t dread anything in 2018. It was all fun.
I like Angrboda, but that section reaaaaaally overstayed it's welcome for me. I loved her place in the story being a sort of guide for Atreus, and I loved hearing her stories about the giants/prophecies, but did they really have to include all the berry picking and part with the Wreath nest? 😩
The Cloud & Aerith section is literally where I quit FF7 remake.
I don’t know who’s idea it was to turn a 30 minute section of the original game into a 4 hour slog….
Funny, cause for many it was one of the highlights of the game. Beautiful VA performance and cute interactions between characters. Lots of subtlety in dialogue.
Sometimes it's nice to slow down, sink in the atmosphere and appreciate the details ya know
Jesus Christ. That's harsh. I thought it dragged a bit, but it was still really cool and unique what they did. You need time to build up a compelling relationship between two characters. Even if it makes repeat playthroughs kind of hard. Like that one part of the last game where Atreus became an asshole for a bit. It's a fever dream that you just have to get through and then you're back to the normal game again.
I think it's also nice to have just a very slow and personal section of the game. It contrasts well with the breakneck pace the game establishes in it's first act. A part of the game that focuses primarily on expanding the story and uses the whole "less is more" technique.
So yeah. Art may not be personally liked by everyone, but it's still art. Santa Monica had some STONES to put this in the game. All those people saying Ragnarok was a safe sequel... No.
There is a way to do that that does not involve "collect fruit for me", "collect root for me", "actually one more thing", "actually one more thing", "actually one more thing", 2 hours later, actually interesting encounter. You can introduce the Angrboda in a billion different ways that don't involve the most clichéd version of video game checklist steps imaginable. The rest of God of War is very good so far, so they obviously know how to do stuff like this well
EDIT: When the rest of ur game and franchise is really good it makes the stuff that's bad seem really bad because of its surroundings. So I stand by worst campaign mission I have ever played
Well the "actually one more thing" feeling was absolutely the intention. Angrboda's "story" ends with her meeting Loki, she doesn't want their meeting to end since it marks the end of her part to play. Also Atreus is seeing his homeland in its true form for first time, meeting a giant for the first time, and also meeting a girl for the very first time. He's definitely curious about everything he's experiencing there.
There is a way to give all that background. It's called paying attention to the fucking dialogue and the characters and the reactions and every fucking thing, maybe if you use your brain instead of just going "Uunga buunga kill everything."
Gotta use that noggin alot to slowly steer a yak from point A to point B for 20 minute bursts. Weird that none of the other character have required a 3 hour long mission solely devoted to then to be fleshed out as characters!
Alright. Continue vitriolically seething at the fact that the game wanted to have a simple, slow, charming section and asked you to pick some fucking fruit. Lmao. The pacing of the section reflects Atreus. He cares about people and relationships more, and he had his own little adventure. It was unique. I liked it. Even though obviously God of War's main audience didn't.
I honestly didn't wanna leave cause I liked it so much. And I'm not even a big fan of sections like that in most games.
To each it's own I guess.
I think Ragnarok executed that part really well.
I didn’t want to leave either, I genuinely felt bad for her. Like she stayed in that place for so long ( also it was fun to play and beautiful)
Normally I would get irritated with her “one more thing” but she was visibly trying to hold him back lol
Also I didn’t even mind it, it’s on here I saw that people hates it so much
I feel like that's going to be the consensus. This section had a lot of good parts, like the bond between the two characters and rhe boss fight, but there is just so much filler, and it isn't even the kind of filler that is just "slow" to build their relationship; it really is just boring. The Wretch nest and the berry gathering being the worst.
Legit how I felt the entire section, too. It’s one thing to come see her, then another to talk to her about prophecy, then another to ride around the water for shits and giggles, then another to see the REAL reason she wanted Atreus there, then another to kill a bunch of fucking nightmares, and then... I’m just tired.
Jesse wtf are you taking about?
On a serious note, I you could have just said you had an issue with them putting in a boring section that was unecessary like every other normal person instead of showing the real reason you had a problem with it. That being the interracial part. Even though they're literally a shape shifting fictional race that in the mythology have a male get pregnant from having sex with a male horse and give birth to monsters. But ok, interracial is where you draw the line lmao.
Seriously, it's fine (sorta, coulda been way shorter) the first time but at some point I just kept thinking NG+ will be a torment because of that part.
To be fair, knowing where to go and what to do will help a lot with that section. I think it’ll likely take the average person an hour and who knows how speed runners maybe trim it down to.
Unless I'm seriously misremembering it, is there even much to skip or go through faster? Sure there's some chests here and there but as far as I remember it's mostly mandatory objectives plus some slow walking sections.
There’s not a lot to skip at all, but you’d be surprised how much time can be saved when you go exactly where you need to and trigger the next set of actions/dialogue with no exploration or wasting time. If people are able to speedrun TLOU2 in about 3 hours and a half (with 30 minutes of loading added on top of that) then I have no doubt that with a proper cutscene skip option and with the PS5 load times, a similar time can be achieved.
I’m not done with this part of the game yet (just met angrboda’s grandmother) but I’ve really enjoyed this section so far, especially the lore regarding the giants. seeing Atreus get a hold of his spartan form was great too. Hope it doesn’t go on for too much longer though
My exact thoughts. I was getting a bit bored of it by the end, but overall liked it and the story pacing it implied.
HOWEVER, on replay it's going to be an absolute pain to get through.
The Angrboda section was cool, and then it just kept going, and going, and going
When she asked to get back on Jalla a second time and collect roots I was totally done with it, the fight at the end was cool though
Her expressions are [directly from kombucha girl](https://youtu.be/d9Ac0w5PccU). As someone else said the devs must have made another reaction gif set like they did in 2018
Tonal consistency and pacing is a thing in narratives you know? Why don’t I give you a daily routine of what Kratos does and sell it to you by saying ‘look, the character development!’
But almost anything can be thought of as contributing to the narrative. I’m not saying you’re wrong; it does do that. But there’s more to stories than just character development - pacing, tonal consistency, structure, length - they all add up to the overall experience. It’s just as important to keep your story, tight and focused, (well, this is highly contextual and dependent on other factors like setting, plot, conflict… but you get the idea), so that the overall enjoyment of a story doesn’t diminish.
It highlighted the game’s narrative failings. GOW 2018 was tight as hell. This one’s story is a meandering mess, and I’m getting annoyed with all the guest sidekicks.
It is. I’m like 15 hours in and Kratos and Atreus don’t know why they’re doing or why. When you peel past the hype it’s a very dull story for a long time.
What do you mean they don’t know what they are doing? There are clear objectives set for each part + clear established conflicts and an overarching narrative about destiny, fatality and the inevitability of fate. It’s extremely and crystal clear what the goals of the character are
Atreus is trying to find himself, find answers and he believes in the prophecies. Kratos is the opposite and tries to solve the entire thing without resorting to war
Idk the story is pretty straight forward, the themes and sub themes are very clear
The only difference with 2018 is that now Kratos and atreus’s goals are conflicted but both have to do with how to deal with ragnarok
I see no mess
I'll never forget the first promotional images of the new Jurassic World movie. Literally Chris Pratt standing next to a black woman and people were calling the movie woke
I really liked this part of the game lol
I hated it
Wouldn’t say hate, but this sequence in Jotunheim was a bit boring apart from the boss fight with Gryla
Fun fact I’m from Iceland and their is a mythological creature that’s name is gryla it’s Lynda like the mother of the Santa klaus she would kidnap kids if they did not behave
So like Krampus ? Ehehe and I don’t even know if I got her name right
Ye kinda
That boss fight was the worst... I mean, SSM is preparing GOW to become a game for everyone title?
You're not nuanced
It was just an hour or so but holy shit is it boring. It’s a 10/10 game so far but that entire sequence reminds me of the swapping between MJ and Miles in Spider-Man PS4.

Yep, loved the relationship building and change of pace, pays off later imo

Nice

In terms of the whole game, you have a metric shit ton of time left
great to hear!
I haven’t even finished yet but I’ve put in a significant amount of time over the last two days - Meeting angrboda feels like forever ago and I still feel like I’m in the middle of the story. It’s insane, the game is massive
Ah that’s good news man, Ive just got to Vanaheim and it still feels like there’s so much left.
Still a bit to go
As in for the whole game? I reread my comment and it sounds like i was asking about just the end of this mission haha my bad!
Ahhhh, no clue brother, just finished this part of the game yesterday
No problemo man in the same boat then! Hope you enjoy the rest of the game
Cheers buddy, you too!!
How many hours in are you? I'm 18 hours in and just now got to (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!) >!Muspelheim with Thor!< and still feel like im nowhere close to the end lol
I'd say that's about end of act 1 tbh.
Idk I just finished at 29 hours and I did all side stuff until like halfway through the game.
Yea I enjoyed it, I wasn’t even really thinking, just having fun
i feel like the people who hated this has absolutely no patience for story or character development, they just want to smack shit as Kratos which sucks because it's important to the plot
Yeah I loved this part. It could’ve been like 10 mins shorter IMO but I loved all the interactions with Atreus and Angrboda
[удалено]
you still do? i’m literally 11 hours in and i’ve played as atreus 3 times 2 of which are really short (but fun)
[удалено]
It’s far too long. I got so annoyed when they do the cave and fights those annoying things.
[удалено]
TLOU2 was way fucking worse

Seethe more
My reaction to that part of the game lol
Normally I don’t like these sorts of sequences but I actually really liked this one, the environment is pretty and felt really big to me in a way that some realms didn’t so far (Alfheim feels so tiny to me in a way that bothers me), and I think the last race they do before you leave is very cute and moving. The wretch nests and the insufferable “that’s not how prophecies work” bs had me want to scream skip
Every time I thought it was over... "and one more thing"
It's 3:30 am, like 2 hours ago I was repeating every 10 minutes, this must be it right? Jesus christ I'm going to sleep and this slog is not even over yet 🙄

2018 was really good in terms of replaying it,but the whole jotunheim part is too long.
Glad I’m not the only one… was just too slow on Yalla
Excuse me, Jalla is the most beautiful and reliable mode of transportation in existence, you buffoon
That would be Appa from the Last Airbender good sir!
Yup Yup! I mean yip yip.
Appa is too powerful tho, he would break the game.
I would enjoy her more if she didn't hold me hostage for 3 hours to collect berries for her. Wtf was this section of the game...
I like Angrboda, but that section reaaaaaally overstayed it's welcome for me. I loved her place in the story being a sort of guide for Atreus, and I loved hearing her stories about the giants/prophecies, but did they really have to include all the berry picking and part with the Wreath nest? 😩

The whole game was extended…that was kinda the point. Don’t know how a ff7 fan could dislike the aerith section.
Literally same. Ff7 was one of my favorite games of all time but ff7 remake just slowed it down to a nauseatingly slow pace.
I think it was the worst mission I have ever played in a game lol. I'm glad some people liked it I guess haha

"I'm a fucking God Of War"
I absolutely adored this section Didn’t even know people disliked it KEK
Loved the dialogue/characters. I was just so boreddddd
Same, it went on for way too long.
The collecting section easily could have concluded after the first
Such a bizarre part of the game. It’s so out of place.
Weirdly enough this section felt like fanfic with constant tonal inconsistencies.
It felt like I was playing another game. Or a spin-off DLC.
i found that part pretty fun is it just me?
Lmfao, I was sitting up there wondering when it will end. Felt like sitting through Twilight all over again.
I feel like that's going to be the consensus. This section had a lot of good parts, like the bond between the two characters and rhe boss fight, but there is just so much filler, and it isn't even the kind of filler that is just "slow" to build their relationship; it really is just boring. Marriage simulator

Me either. I am gonna dread doing this over. Last game I didn’t dread anything. I was left wanting more to do. This is such a drag.
I actually really liked this part of the game but thinking about visiting this section on NG+ is going be tough LOL.
Be like a speedrunner and no clip lol
Replay value killer , what a snore this section was
Seriously, it's fine (sorta, coulda been way shorter) the first time but at some point I just kept thinking NG+ will be a torment because of that part.
To be fair, knowing where to go and what to do will help a lot with that section. I think it’ll likely take the average person an hour and who knows how speed runners maybe trim it down to.

You're right, I've accidentally skipped some dialogue as Kratos a few times by going forward a bit too soon, good point.
Kinda like the beginning in Twilight town of kingdom hearts 2
I’m not done with this part of the game yet (just met angrboda’s grandmother) but I’ve really enjoyed this section so far, especially the lore regarding the giants. seeing Atreus get a hold of his spartan form was great too. Hope it doesn’t go on for too much longer though
It goes on for far too long, that's why everybody dislikes it
My exact thoughts. I was getting a bit bored of it by the end, but overall liked it and the story pacing it implied. HOWEVER, on replay it's going to be an absolute pain to get through.
Is Atreus down there for the first time or what
Ayoo? 😶🌫️📸
would have been a wonderful segment if it was short instead of it being a bloated multiple fetch quests
The Angrboda section was cool, and then it just kept going, and going, and going When she asked to get back on Jalla a second time and collect roots I was totally done with it, the fight at the end was cool though
Bro I heard the Rock Vine Boom I swear
How do people even make these? I remember some from gow 2018
The 2018 ones were made by the devs
Wait is this in-game?
Spoilers!!!!!! Jk.
When atreus…
It smells like a public restroom!
Is this from photo mode or something?
Nah probably from popular reaction gifset that the devs made. They did the same thing with last game.
Here wondering this as well.
It must be, her expressions are probably so pronounced here because they're meant to be seen from far away
Her expressions are [directly from kombucha girl](https://youtu.be/d9Ac0w5PccU). As someone else said the devs must have made another reaction gif set like they did in 2018
After playing this part of the game, how anyone could score it 10/10 is beyond me…

It did for me. The length could’ve been cut in half.
Tonal consistency and pacing is a thing in narratives you know? Why don’t I give you a daily routine of what Kratos does and sell it to you by saying ‘look, the character development!’
Yes, and that section contributed to the narrative of the story?
But almost anything can be thought of as contributing to the narrative. I’m not saying you’re wrong; it does do that. But there’s more to stories than just character development - pacing, tonal consistency, structure, length - they all add up to the overall experience. It’s just as important to keep your story, tight and focused, (well, this is highly contextual and dependent on other factors like setting, plot, conflict… but you get the idea), so that the overall enjoyment of a story doesn’t diminish.
I actually liked this Part a lot
How did not a single review not mention this??? I had the exact same thought playing it
Several reviews mention some pacing issues, this is one of them.
Because gamer spoiler culture freaks out at any reviews that talks about a game’s actual content lol. But I did see some allude to it
It highlighted the game’s narrative failings. GOW 2018 was tight as hell. This one’s story is a meandering mess, and I’m getting annoyed with all the guest sidekicks.
A mess? Bruh
It’s extremely and crystal clear what the goals of the character are Atreus is trying to find himself, find answers and he believes in the prophecies. Kratos is the opposite and tries to solve the entire thing without resorting to war Idk the story is pretty straight forward, the themes and sub themes are very clear The only difference with 2018 is that now Kratos and atreus’s goals are conflicted but both have to do with how to deal with ragnarok I see no mess
I saw Utica girl
Racist
I haven't played Ragnarok yet because I am a PC pleb who'll have to wait 3 years before playing it but why are her expressions so Disney-like?
Ugly character with shitty lengthy subplot

your life must become woke every time you see a black person. grow up
I'll never forget the first promotional images of the new Jurassic World movie. Literally Chris Pratt standing next to a black woman and people were calling the movie woke
