You don't really need an amazing laptop to play 1-3, anything with integrated graphics from the past couple of years should be able to play it and if you wait a few years they'll be able to play it well.
Hell I used to play 1-3 on my old slow virus infested Windows XP tower
Definitive Editions will need a GPU. A GTX 1650 runs AoE2 DE really well, whereas the integrated graphics in my i5 from 2015 won't play it at all, unless you drop settings and resolution waaaay down to an eyesore. An i5 from 2015 can run AoE2 HD reasonably well though! Even at 1440p.
Similarly, my gf's 11th gen i5 can run DE okay, its definitely playable on lower resolutions and settings. But its not amazing. The 11th gen i5 will run HD in any settings you desire.
I would not attempt AoE3 DE without a GPU, my 1080ti w/Ryzen 5600G struggles to hold 60fps on max settings, especially when water is in view.
My old i5 from 2015 will *just* manage to run the older AoE3 version okay, I managed to get through all campaigns on that hardware. DE though... Just don't try.
If you want to play on Definitive editions I highly recommend at least a low-end GPU. The older versions will be fine with integrated graphics.
Hope that helps!
Well I wasn't saying they would run at max or high settings... I was also suggesting 720-1080p.
But the graphical differences from the settings also aren't that big of a deal in these games imo. Your 2015 cpu I think just meets the minimum specs. The latest integrated gpus are much better and as I said will only get better in a few years integrated gpu's will be enough to run them at 1080+decent settings.
Also running most games on max on pc is a waste of resources, some settings use a disproportionate amount of resources when they go above high. But it varies from game to game.
\>Well I wasn't saying they would run at max or high settings... I was also suggesting 720-1080p.
I dunno man, I would never recommend playing these games at 720p. 1080p minimum or you are diminishing your experience. Due to the zoom level being semi-tied to resolution I personally just couldn't enjoy the game at 720p. I felt the zoom is ideal at 1440p or above but 1080p is reasonably playable. But I suppose it depends on what you are playing - campaigns would be fine at 1080p but online multiplayer you will be at a disadvantage.
\>But the graphical differences from the settings also aren't that big of a deal in these games imo
Agreed, and this is why the old HD version is still downloaded on my PC. It's gameplay is timeless! That's one of the reasons I brought this up, some folk will be better downloading HD instead of DE - it will play in a higher resolution (albeit locked) and just generally run better than the more expensive DE version. But the gameplay is pretty much the same, with DE being a bit faster.
\>the latest integrated gpus are much better and as I said will only get better in a few years integrated gpu's will be enough to run them at 1080+decent settings.
Also agreed, current integrated graphics do an okay job for AoE2 DE and below on lower settings. But not AoE3 DE and above, MANY people will be better downloading the older version of that because the DE version will bring most laptops and integrated GPU's to their knees. As will AoE4 on any settings.
\>Also running most games on max on pc is a waste of resources, some settings use a disproportionate amount of resources when they go above high. But it varies from game to game.
I mean, it's subjective. We'd all play on max settings if we could, no? And we're missing a big point throughout all of this: frame rate.
Integrated graphics? Kiss goodbye to 60fps. If you're on AoE3 DE? Kiss goodbye to stable 30fps on integrated graphics.
Trust me, even a low end GPU is going to help you with all the DE versions considerably. Otherwise, you are better considering the older versions and upgrading later when the GPU market gets better. You get a discount on steam when you own the older versions anyway.
Source: Tested these games across the following hardware: 980Ti, 1080Ti, intel 11th gen i5 (Iris I think?), intel 5th gen i5, GTX 1650, Ryzen Vega 3200G, Ryzen Vega 5600G. Results: AoE2 DE and below are playable with sacrifices on integrated, AoE3 DE and above NEED a GPU to run well. All the older versions run fine across all tested hardware, though the older i5 struggled a fair few times with AoE3. The 980Ti did much better than the 1650 for those interested, but the 980Ti and GTX 1650 did struggle with medium/higher settings on AoE3 DE and above. The 980Ti managed higher resolutions where the 1650 could not, so the 980Ti just wins here. The newer i5 was considerably more capable than the older one from 2015, as you'd expect where AoE2 DE was playable on the newer i5 but could barely get past the title screen on the older i5. The 5600G was better than the 11th gen i5 but that could be because it was laptop vs decent desktop, not really fair to compare. The 3200G was a bit shit across the board without a GPU to help it out but did very well for a CPU you can get pretty cheap these days, it did not do well online at all, it seems to hit limits on larger games like 3v3/4v4 which results in tanked frame rates. Conclusion: If you want to play DE versions, especially online, you need even just a low-end GPU to get a decent experience with reasonable resolutions and steady framerates. AoE4 needs a decent GPU, so if you want the whole series you are gonna want even just a 900 series GPU or better. And if you want to play online I strongly recommend getting 1000 series or above. Can't comment on any RTX cards thanks to the crypto dicks, scalping bastards and the hellish global chip shortage.
Well I stand corrected with aoe3, I haven't played aoe3 de only aoe2, let alone on integrated graphics, so can't comment on it either way. I was basing my comments on the minimum specs.
I mean, it's subjective. We'd all play on max settings if we could, no? And we're missing a big point throughout all of this: frame rate.
Well yeah, but what I meant was the max settings usually offer small improvements for a disproportionate increase in load, so if I was dropping frames on max I'd gladly drop down to high and probably wouldn't notice the difference when actually playing the game.
Hkw do you even play an rts on console?
By plugging a keyboard and mouse into it?
Definitely wouldn't mind that. For some non-hardcore gameplay I would even go with a gamepad that basically emulates the mouse and a keyboard or chatpad to use for grouping and stuff...
Hell I would even play it only with a gamepad that emulates the mouse and have my map riddled with troops I didn't quite hit with the selection box... I just want to play aoe4
>I just want to play aoe4
I feel you there, man. Whether it's kb&m or a controller, I just want to play it. I know there's a lot of super hard core AOE fans who don't like the game as much as AOE2, but I moved solely to console gaming over a decade ago and haven't gotten to play AOE since the mid 2000s, so I'm happy no matter what iteration they release and enforce on Xbox. When I heard it wasn't initially releasing on Xbox as well as PC, I was pretty disappointed.
I love Halo Wars on Xbox (HW1 is my favorite Halo game), so I want way more RTS games on the consoles. If they got Flight Sim working on Xbox, I'm sure AoE could work too.
Series X owner here, I'd really like to play it. I love Halo but Halo Wars games are only decent in MP. Single player is so boring and the enemy AI just stands still while you plow through them.
A much more in depth rts sounds cool. I know it'll be tough on controller but if it works, it could be amazing.
I know it isn’t ideal for couch/living room play but here’s hoping they include a keyboard and mouse option like they have been doing with a lot of games. I miss AOE2 so much lol
Would be kinda odd if they don't considering they did had mouse support for AOE2 on PS2 back years ago.
It's been ages sine I played Halo Wars. But if my memory serves me correctly I thought the AI was actually pretty decent in the higher difficulties?
The whole game is you building up forces and slamming them into enemies. Barely any counter attacks or challenge at all. So long as you understand the rock paper scissor elements, it's too simple.
I remember playing Star Wars Battlegrounds (which was a mod of wither Age of Empires or Empire Earth, forgot which. It was a way more complex game.
Granted, Halo Wars has amazing controls for being on a controller and multi-player has a ton of depth. It's just single player that feels like spilling a gallon of water on a sheet of paper and then slowly watching it dry.
You should play on Automatic AI difficulty with skirmishes. After 100, it gets pretty difficult and getting above 150 is considered extremely good. My friend has plateaued at around 190 because it's too hard
Can someone explain? Is it something publicly available. These tweets with random keywords always feel like a riddle to me.
Damn. I'm getting old aren't I ?
It means that a xbox build of the game has been made available to playtesters.. it's purely internal.
Considering it's on PC game pass, I'm not surprised about this at all.
I would love if this game comes to xbox so that I can play it on the go with xcloud.
Hopefully touch screen support would be added as well.
They should start adding xcloud for pc games. I use a pretty low performance windows tablet that barely runs any games. Playing some xbox games through xcloud is really nice but there are a lot of pc games in gamepass that I would love to play
Absolutely. It will basically let Xbox play pc games which opens a lot of opportunity.
Woooo ! My keyboard and mouse is ready !!!!!!!!
How is K&B support on the series consoles?
its supported on the One
kbm has been on many consoles for a very long time
but not all games support it
Since no one has really answered: it's fine in the Xbox itself but for games that truly use it I can't go back. The biggest issue just that navigating the guide and dashboard without a cursor feels weird. Surprisingly, certain games like Halo Infinite don't have the cursor in their menus either. Once you get used to some of the shortcuts though it gets better.
I use a Razer Turret on my couch almost every day now. We have two gaming PCs in our office and I used to exclusively play in there. For Christmas this year we picked up a new 65 inch TV and a Series X. I played the entire Halo campaign with keyboard and mouse on the couch in gorgeous 4K with Dolby Vision and our theater set up. That sold it for me.
It was weird to get used to a smaller mouse pad but it's very comfortable now. I still play a lot on my PC but my wife has gotten back into Minecraft and the keyboard and mouse support even for split screen is great and we can both play on the couch together instead of at our PCs. A few games do have lazy support for keyboard and mouse like The Sims 4, but generally if support is there it's great.
I really hope more people consider using it and encouraging devs to support it. There are a lot of Xbox Play Anywhere games that have recently hit missing it on Xbox. Unpacking and Townscaper felt perfectly positioned as Play Anywhere titles on Xbox to use it but don't. Bringing a game like Age to Xbox might be the next effort to broaden that support.
I use my series s as a PC for a lot of games, including halo infinite
I didnt try on games , just for microsoft edge .
At this point, why not just save up and buy a PC? You can get PC game pass (where AOE 4 is already available), many more games, and better performance.
500 vs 1900 for the same performance is a rather big jump, this coming from someone who has both... and the Xbox is still better for pick up and play
I agree with the pickup and play point, but overall you will not beat out performance of a PC. It’s dependent on the game though and AOE might not be the best example.
Honestly, you might be very surprised. The Series X gets alarmingly close to a 3080. It definitely beats 3070s in a fair few games
What? The Series X is like a 2070 Super. It's no where close to a 3070, let alone a 3080.
In some games it's a 2070 super, in others it's a 2080ti. The point is that it's in the vicinity of the 3070/3080 in most games, doesn't suffer from stupid windows/driver problems, and is far cheaper than a pc. I still play my games mostly on pc; but if I actually want to relax, I don't want to have to deal with a pc
We're not arguing about price here though or the accessibility of pc gaming. The console itself is a good value but atleast don't make stuff up about performance metrics. There's not a single instance where the series x is running like a 3070/3080 or even close to it. Most cases it's running very close to a 2070 super and sometimes even less depending on the game. In most raytracing scenarios, it performs about as well as a RTX 2060 as shown in games like Metro Exodus or Watch Dogs Legion. Forza Horizon 5 runs as well as a RTX 2070 super which is a first party title optimized well for both PC and the Xbox Series X. The Series X is not anywhere close to a PC running a 3070 or 3080, regardless of price.
Fair but don’t the consoles have massive FPS limitations in comparison?
Considering that the Series X can reach 120fps in certain games and 60 quite regularly in many other, there isn't really much FPS limitations to that system.
Unless you want stupid frame rates (like 240hz), the consoles can do it. Theoretically they could even do 240hz but there aren't any games that would benefit massively from it
“Hey you have a $500 console why don’t you just spend more than that to play a first party game?!?!?!”
Lmao the absurdity of some people
Even if this only ends up on next gen consoles. I have dearly missed playing Battle For Middle Earth 1 and 2 on 360. Still play Halo Wars. Been dying for Age Of Empires dude, I need that shit.
If they make a console version it should be added to the xcloud library too. You could play it on a freaking phone then. I really hope this won't take forever to release.
I wonder if it'll be available on Xbox One or if its solely a Series S|X game.
Any game can now be on the Xbox One through the cloud.
They need to fix this game before even thinking about porting it over anywhere. Some serious spaghetti code has hamstringed each update so far introducing new bugs that go weeks without fixes
These aren’t mutually exclusive, the effort to port Flight Sim to console ended up helping improve performance on PC significantly
Literally, I havent gave it a try after the first week. I went right back to AoE 2 haha.
It's decent atm. Haven't noticed too many bugs in it recently but the balance on some of the civs is just awful. Going against certain civs in 1v1 is just depressing if you know that person is going to cheese you. Some civs/units atm or how they're used are straight up broken. I think a lot of popular AOE players have shifted back to AOE2.
I have put around 100 hours into it between team and 1v1 online multiplayer. My friends and I have also switched back to aoe2. Sc2 has been my go to game ever since it’s beta tests ~10 years ago but support has basically completely dried up. Was hoping aoe4 would fill that void but it’s been really disappointing tbh ☹️
Xbox first party usually tests Xbox games on an Xbox when they bring them to console.
True, Ouya is next I bet.
I want my Xbox to become more like a gaming PC.
Any new info on this?
Controller would be a pretty bad way to play it as this game wasnt a stripped down console focused game like Halo Wars but I dont see why they cant port it over as GamePass release padding.
Heck Age of Empires 2 was on PS2. It was terrible but it was done.
I think if they do port it to Xbox it will be keyboard and mouse only
Xbox supports keybpard and mouse in games, and AOE4 will be a m/kb game even on xbox.
I wonder what mechanics will be simplified for the consoles
None, they don't do that these days. I think it'll just be m/kb only even on console.
But they do no? I mean even football manager has slightly different version on consoles. Stellaris too.
So the game will be adapted for controllers. There will never be a single game that would be playable only with m/kB.
"They" means microsoft. They don't do that sort of thing, meaning alter games for PC and console in that way. Obviously stuff like graphics and options and stuff will be different, but they don't make the fundamental gameplay different between platforms because everything has to be crossplay. I think it's very unlikely they'd simplify the gameplay for consoles, even if the alternative is the game playing like shit on controller.

Nothing because it'll be K&M only.
I don't think so.
At least the gameplay will require m&k.
No. I am pretty sure it will have UI adapted for controllers.
That I definitely can see.
