The body found is that of Gabby Petito

Mundane-Product9034

I also feel bad for the LEO who made what is probably a fateful decision

regancorsi

Does anyone know if the body found was buried?

Dekarde

There was a report from a reporter who saw the video footage from their helicopter and said a body was visible, ie LEO didn't dig it up, but of course would not show it(explicitly mentions she saw a body) nor have any of the other news organizations who had helicopters in the air when LEO came on scene. All the footage I've seen has had cuts that kept certain portions out of view as the LEO put up a small 'awning'.

[deleted]

Gabby was not very close to that 'awning' The news chopper accidentally showed once on camera before cutting the feed and re-starting

Happy_Bunch_5547

There’s a rumor on Tiktok that the body was buried because the body was found in a dirt field. There was helicopter footage on KSL5 of a tent that FBI set up around the body. Nobody confirmed it was buried. Autopsy will be released on Tuesday.

avynray

I watched the chopper video. I noticed a big black bag about 10-15 ft from the tent. You see it several times (with and without SAR crews around it). It could of course be their gear, but if she was in that bag, it could explain how they found her and how her body wouldn’t have been taken by animals. This is fully speculative. It didn’t look like anything was under the canopy.

Tight_Tangerine_4072

Where’s this video?

pennypacker2021

> rumor on Tiktok lol

darkqueen70

As much as I think this guy is probably guilty, it’s crazy to me how many people are ready to call him a murdered and skin him alive without even having a COD for gabby. If the roles were reversed, everyone’s opinion would be totally different.

k2_jackal

You’re being down voted for being rational… then it is Reddit after all

darkqueen70

I knew I’d get downvoted. The mob has their pitchforks out.

[deleted]

Normal people knew she was dead and that he killed her when he came back without her, got an attorney, and wouldn't talk to the police. If Gabby had done the same thing, she would be getting vilified too. And we're calling him a murderer because he murdered that poor girl. If you want to wait until you know COD, be my guess. The rest of us already know what happened.

LurkingArachnid

I mean, way more men kill their female partners than the other way around

djdanal

No lol

CuriousAssociate5926

Well it could have been a lot but nothing will ever excuse running away from it rather than reporting it. No actually if the roles were reversed I would still think the same.

Brook-Bond

I can’t really see his parents letting him drive off in an emotional state, with the possibility of suicide on the Tuesday, know where to retrieve the car on the Wednesday, and wait until Friday to report him missing, unless they were indeed covering his tracks and giving him a head start. From their actions in protecting him until then, it just doesn’t make sense that they don’t know his whereabouts

Olympusrain

Unless the car was gonna get towed why would they even take it?!

Successful_Sir_4265

They probably hope he will suicide, because they are obviously deeply involved in helping him cover it up. I might be wrong, but they all strike me as the every man for himself type.

Leiservampir

"Every man for himself" and yet potentially involved in helping BL get away? How did you get those two things together? If they were all for themselves they wouldn't be getting involved with this at all.

PayYourSurgeonWell

I’m foreseeing a terrible outcome for this case. Imagine if Brian killed her by means of stabbing, suffocation, bludgeoning, etc. But then after 3 weeks of being exposed to wildlife and the elements of nature, all signs of foul play become erased, which then as a result makes it impossible for a coroner to prove homicide. Has anything like that happened before?

islandmama2b

I agree that upon completing the autopsy, the coroner should be able to provide some very valuable information. This is their area of expertise and they will know exactly what to look for.

tallswedishredhead

Look up the body farm. Even a decomposing body has a story to tell. A trained eye can read it.

pennypacker2021

They can still establish cause of death. But the longer she was out there, the more this goes in the favour of BL. Because he and his despicable parents refused to speak for weeks, they can now argue any injuries were sustained by a predator or other natural means (eg she fell whilst running away) and create cause for doubt.

MangoPossible

I hope your parents throw you into the fire in the near future. Karmas a bitch.

pennypacker2021

You must be a good Christian.

MangoPossible

Christians definitely believe in Karma dont they? You despicable human being.

pennypacker2021

Awareness is a good step to recovery. Good luck. Try not to kill anyone in the meantime.

Olympusrain

A medical examiner will be able to tell.

lakeerie1988724

No. That's very far outside of the realm off possibilities. If you think that's the case, I suggest killing someone and then just finding a super good hiding spot and if you make it for three weeks no one will know. She'll still have a torso and she'll still have bones. If he stabbed her there will be nicks on the bones. if he strangled her, her abrasions will still show on the remainder of the tissue on her body,

djdanal

Three weeks isn’t much in a case like this. If you lauren to true crime there can be bodies in water for a month and they still n is cause of death and find DNA

amk0819

I doubt that would happen this soon after remains have been found.. there are so many ways for a ME to conclude foul play just based on the skeletal remains. IE cuts, broken hyoid bone, other damage to the bones in general. None of that would change due to being buried/not

Jackie_Of_All_Trades

You gotta watch some Forensic Files. The scientists can do amazing things in many cases.

po00on

They can identify cause of death on archeological digs with remains that are thousands of years old, so hopefully there should be no issues here.

lakeerie1988724

No! If you kill a person and they're exposed to the cool, early-fall elements for three weeks, you get away with it. Case closed.

heady_brosevelt

Casey Anthony case

lllslc

Unfortunately, she was under water for awhile due to flooding in the area. Had the police officer who responded the first time the meter reader found her done a more thorough job, they would have likely been able to determine the cause of death and found Casey guilty. He screwed up!

Olympusrain

I can’t remember, so the police were initially called about a dead child but didn’t respond??

lllslc

The police responded but the officer either saw a snake or was worried about snakes in the area and chickened out and didn't go to the spot the meter reader said he saw something suspicious. The officer did a cursory look around, said there was nothing there and left. It turns out she was there but then the area flooded for awhile. When the water subsided the meter reader was back there again and called police a second time and the responding officer went further into the wooded area and found the remains. Very sad and unfortunate.

Successful_Sir_4265

The coroner may not be able to prove homicide(i think they still can tho) but he’s most likely run off and killed himself by now anyway. At least her family has her remains, and hopefully his family gets charged for covering for him: 😷

YourAphantasia

I don't have children so maybe I just don't that mind set but I never understood why the family would feel better about having her body back. If you found my pup dead in the woods please don't bring her back to me.

kittycatnala

Seriously? She is their daughter and family member. They will want her buried or cremated and a memorial site. If you’re murdered and left in the woods would your family be happy just to leave you there?

IzzyPopsMama

It’s also part of the grieving process that needs to happen, having a service and saying the goodbyes they couldn’t in life. Having a place or her ashes that make them feel still in touch and close to her.

Meowmeow69me

You would want your dog to just rot in the woods or would you like to give it a nice final resting place that you could maybe visit when you miss it and leave flowers and stuff? Edit: and closure?? They need to know how and why she died. Wouldn’t you want to know if your dog was shot by someone or killed by another animal etc.

YourAphantasia

Yes I would want to know why but I mean physically having the body back, not for me. I would prefer my puppy cremated and distributed to the beautiful Parks she loved. I have no experience in this type of death so excuse my ignorance. I might feel completely on opposite of it was my child. This is sad af.

_NancyDrew

It's not like they're taking it home. You'd want your puppy cremated and her parents want to be able to give her a proper, respectful burial. With her dignity. Nobody wants their baby girl to be tossed in the woods like trash or never found. It would haunt any parent.

NightmareMan502

Forensic Pathologist are pretty good though. There is almost always clues left.

whosehorseisthat

Not to be morbid…but what would her condition be in this sense? One of my friends was murdered, and left in a ditch. They were found in two weeks, and was in pretty rough shape due to weather, etc. Is she in any condition for her parents to appropriately identify her? It’s traumatic to lose someone, but especially if they are in a rough condition to identify… I was just curious if anyone has insight about this. I apologize if it offends anyone.

Olympusrain

Yeah what I’m wondering is how they are so sure it’s even her..?

islandmama2b

Apparently, her father was able to identify her, so as much as I hate to think about it, she was in a state where there were obvious signs it was her.

Olympusrain

Ughh this is heartbreaking

whosehorseisthat

Possibly hair and clothing/jewelry?

last_sober_thylacine

She's likely signicantly decomposed, at best. Completely skeletonized, worst case. What's left of her would have been investigated by any wildlife to have come upon the scene. Her parents would not have been permitted to see her, not that they'd want to in that state. She was identified very quickly, and I've read a lot of comments guessing that it was her tattoos that assisted in IDing her. I'm skeptical about that, and believe it may have been her jewelry instead. She wore a lot of rings, they were mentioned in the body cam police footage. Also, fully skeletonized bodies are often very difficult in ascertaining cause of death. Obviously, stabbing/gunfire can leave identifying marks on bone. But only if a bone was nicked. Strangulation almost always shows in a broken hyoid bone. But there are many homicide methods that are not evident when soft tissue is gone.

whosehorseisthat

I’m seeing speculation she was buried. Would this change the course of decomposition? I’m truly trying to be respectful, but I’m also too terrified to google any of this stuff.

golickrust

It changes things for sure. If she was buried (and not dug up) then larger predators wouldn't be an issue, it's mostly bugs and bugs come in stages. Also if she was wrapped in anything, that can slow decomp down and type of soil and weather are a factor. If you're interested, body farms have a lot of information on this topic. I used to work at a funeral home and there are so many factors that affect decomp rates.

Crinklytoes

Spread Creek sits at a higher elevation above 7000 feet, which means everything gets cold at night and not warmed much during the day, Around this time of year days are lightly snowy and nights are cold. Tomorrow, for example snow is expected

oxencotten

Eh the highs are still in the 60’s and 70’s and there’s no snow on the ground as evidenced in the video of the couple driving by the van. The lows at night seem to be 25-35. I don’t think that’s cold enough to really slow decomposition. I could be wrong though.

islandmama2b

I think you are right. We live about 90 miles from there at a slightly lower elevation and it's been mild temps during the day still. I would say 60-70's, but colder at night. I don't know if it was quite 25-35 though, we are just starting to get frosts now.

oxencotten

Yeah I was just going off this weeks weather from the nearest town but at this time of year 3 weeks makes a pretty big differences in temps so it’s definitely been warmer.

M4SixString

That was almost 3 weeks ago though. Temps start changing in September

oxencotten

I mean I’m going off the temps of this week which are even colder than it’s been. I just pointed out there wasn’t snow on the ground when she was most likely killed and there isn’t any now because it’s too cold for snow to last into the day.

kween_poppy

Anything below 32 degrees F is freezing and could slow decomp significantly

oxencotten

I mean I know what the freezing temp is. I just don’t know if it being below freezing for a few hours every other night before hitting 60-70 in the day is cold enough. Again I’m just speculating. I don’t know how long a body takes to compose in normal conditions.

grrliz

Science is pretty impressive and at the very least they have her bones which depending on how she died, could tell you lots. We just need to wait and see.

radiantlyhappy

Has anyone seen that the van door closes as the van filming approaches?????? https://imgur.com/gallery/EnjTWmX

YourAphantasia

I'm trying to understand why the van door closing is significant.

Dekarde

All it means is someone was there, that's it, the time frame is where people speculate something happened it could be hours before or even right after but we'll never know for sure as we'll only potentially ever get one person's account and you can't trust him.

pennypacker2021

This is a zoom-in from a fair distance away. It could just be the ladder coming in and out of the picture. There's so much noise you cannot say for sure that is a door closing.

M4SixString

That's a lot clearer than YouTube. You can see it slightly on YouTube also

radiantlyhappy

[door open](https://imgur.com/gallery/JPXuscW) I disagree. As a professional photographer, the highlights make sense on either side of the door.

Crinklytoes

Relevance?... just wondering why a camper van with a human inside it would be unusual? From a Western state resident high altitude perspective The biggest details that grabbed my attention ... are those muddy tires and nearby trough marks which indicate that van was stuck a few times before it landed in its recorded parking spot. The ruts are in between the river and roadway but they're deep enough to indicate damage to a vehicle, hence a viable reason for an argument ...

radiantlyhappy

The relevance is that it PLACES one of them in the van at that timestamp if it can be confirmed.

Brook-Bond

I can see what you’re saying, but I thing it’s the black ladder on the back🤔

carpe-jvgvlvm

I think it's an artifact; I was on Gray Hughes channel (new to me) and he ran that backwards and forwards so many times, and did a poll even (about 50% "opened/closes" and 50% artifact from video compression). The date's good (8/26? at 6pm on the video?) but people were saying they saw a guy in the field digging and doors opening and closing... it's a dash cam. Low quality (esp to be kept for a month almost).

Dekarde

You can see the arc of the door swinging at the bottom of the door but some people saw faces/blood/a sleeping person/ a 'gun' from the other angle that shows the van's windshield the second time the youtubers who captured the video came around and saw the van again/later. If you want to see something or don't your mind will help you out.

Organic-Error

What the fuck?

PhotojournalistNo456

they are either calling the swat negotiator because they are going to do something to themselves or they have brian there, but i think they are pulling some shit

PhotojournalistNo456

he may have poisoned her...a little tranny fluid in one of those canisters, on a hike...she wouldnt make it back and he could just say that was after he left or 'whatever' is convenient for that POS

YourAphantasia

Coolant is the way to do it, or at least the way sick murderer do it. Sweet taste and toxic as hell. Never heard of killing someone with ATF.

PhotojournalistNo456

yeah...there ya go. But since that has probably been done before I can see him trying to do something new and millennial

carpe-jvgvlvm

All the "may haves" don't add up to the guy not telling anyone anything, and then lawyering up, and then disappearing.

bad-coder-man

Let's not make wild theories

BongLeardDongLick

Lol, you know you’re on Reddit right?

bad-coder-man

True that but, someone has to be a voice of reason before we get marathon bomber 2.0 style accusations

thebrittaj

What exactly happened with the marathon bomber on here? I keep seeing it referenced as “bad job” Reddit, can you give me a summary?

bad-coder-man

They posted pictures of people with "evidence" claiming they were the bomber leading news orgs and others to run with it. To get more detailed they named a guy and harassed his family and he turned out to be a missing student. They found Sunil, he committed suicide (before the marathon). People tortured the poor kids parents

PhotojournalistNo456

its actually not too wild. people get poisoned A LOT. if there was some foul play, last thing the suspect needed was distinguishing marks to make it look like they were a murderer. tranny fluid isnt hard to come by...a poisonous plant...you name it.

bad-coder-man

Wild or not is not the point clearly.

Jabberjunky

How do you know she was murdered?

thebrittaj

I felt this too. That he didn’t directly kill her so much as Indireclty by leaving her

Jabberjunky

I have been thinking. Maybe after the no contact hotel room situation that could have been the last time he saw her alive also. After checking her snap location hitchhiked out there just to find her dead. Or..... I just saw the post where the van had been wrecked and repaired....idk. if true maybe she jumped from the moving van and got ran over. Also

BigBlue923

Or maybe he pushed her out and she tried to get back in thru the window like the other time. What ever it is, it is going to turn out to be horrific.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jabberjunky

Too soon?

Informal_Fault_5764

My theory is they met back up after the cops made them seperate that's why he hitchhiked ... He hitchhiked to where she was staying for the night and they began to fight again and in the scuffle he hit her too hard and killed her .... Panicked took her in the van and disposed of her and went home ... It's definitely possible between where they were and where he went that he got the vehicle detailed and cleaned too... Now I believe he left not to hide but to kill himself ... This is my honest gut feeling

Seabassmax

Cooberated timeline doesn't align with your thinking. Too many wrong directions and a week apart

KayaXiali

The supposed sighting of him hitchhiking and the domestic violence separation were over a week apart

Jabberjunky

She might have died/killed herself before he got back. He found her. And panicked.

SatanicWomb

No you kill yourself from remorse when you kill your gf. No way was this an accident. How many coincidences do you believe in? Get real.

Jabberjunky

I doubt he wanted to kill her.

SatanicWomb

Yet, he did it anyway. Somehow when the rest of us get pissed at our partner, we manage not to murder them. Go figure.

Jabberjunky

What if...after the no contact order he never saw her alive again. Think about it he would have had the snap app to find her.

SatanicWomb

Logic is not your strong suit, is it?

Jabberjunky

There is no evidence they were together after the no contact order. Did he go back the the police and have it removed. Maybe he thought she left him the van and flew home. Idk. Do you love the idea he murdered her? Does the idea he is evil give some sort of satisfaction? Do you have satanic children? It's not logical to ask such questions.

budlightguy

The body cam footage and no contact order were on August 12th. Gabby and Brian were seen at and checked out of a hotel in SLC on August 24th. Gabby facetimed with her mother on August 25th and told her that Brian and her were at Grand Teton National Park. try again.

Jabberjunky

I was way off there

SatanicWomb

You are as sick as Brian is. Get help.

Jabberjunky

You like the idea that I am as sick as bryan. What does that say about you. Are you out of zanex.

SatanicWomb

Yup just like you are you out of anti psychotics.

Constant_Tribulation

He came back and found her dead? How dumb are you? She didn’t die from natural causes, he fuckin killed her.

Jabberjunky

You cannot be sure of that. He acted pretty stupid. I bet she died from exposure. We will see.

exhaustedmom

She was less than a football field away from a well traveled road. If she was abandoned she could have easily made it back to that road. Why are people so insistent at this point to defend BL?

Jabberjunky

Innocent untill proven guilty. I hate to think people are bad. This is not defense just a alternative narrative.

exhaustedmom

Innocent until proven in a court of law. That hasn’t changed. You nor I can convict him. We are all well aware no one has been charged. But we can use our brains. Edit: I did not mean to be rude, just based on the facts I find that alternative story to be well beyond unlikely..

Jabberjunky

That's fair.

karlou1984

Wtf?! Most people get caught because they act stupid. This guy isn't some mastermind experienced killer...you watch too many movies.

Jabberjunky

I think people panic and make horrible decisions. People seem to be more worried about cover their ass.this tends to make a bad situation worse.

Constant_Tribulation

so dumb. If you actually think that then you have literally no common sense. Like zero. I’m amazed at some of the stupid fucking shit people are speculating in here when it’s been fucking glaringly obvious what is happening from the start.

Jabberjunky

Do you think he strangled her? I doubt it.

Constant_Tribulation

Or he pushed her and she fell and hit her head? Or he just went nuts and beat her to death? He killed her, dragged her body out there, and fled after his botched alibi attempt and coming clean to his parents. She didn’t sit down in the woods .2 miles from the road and starve to death in 2 days. That’s fucking absurd.

Jabberjunky

She might have come in contact with animals. It might have gotten cold. She might have already been dehydrated. Who knows.

Constant_Tribulation

No dude. This is stupid

Jabberjunky

You want him to be some monstar. Have a little faith. You might want to relax. Name calling tells me you have some other agenda.

budlightguy

He finally had enough of her issues? way to blame the fuckin victim there. FFS. I don't even want to live on this planet anymore. Beam me the fuck up, Scotty.

Jabberjunky

After watching the police body cam I believe he had his hands full.

budlightguy

Watch it again. He said HE has anxiety too, so it'd really be more like they both had their hands full with each other. Also her best friend has made statements that Gabby was never that bad, and she believes something had to have happened to trigger an episode like that, and talked about some pretty controlling and jealous behavior toward Gabby. Pretty sure he has some issues himself. Either way, regardless of whether she had issues or not, your original statement comes off pretty fucked up, like you're defending him. I don't give a shit HOW bad someone is being, you don't fuckin abandon someone in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, especially a 22 yo girl who might weigh 120 soaking wet, to fend for themselves until you decide to come back at some point in the future. Clearly he could've, even if she was being aggressive, just locked the van and sat inside it for awhile until she calmed down or wore herself out raging. If he was able to leave her there, he was able to stay there in the locked van.

Kind_Mission

What are you saying? He didn't abandon her without cell service. Why would you make this up? What does 22 or her weight have to do with it?

budlightguy

I was responding to a theory the other person posted that he left gabby alone out there and took off, and when he went back some time later, found her dead already. They found her in a remote area, which in those remote areas in national parks in the wilderness almost never have cell service - so while that is supposition on my part, it's an pretty good educated guess. The point of her being 22 and 120 is that she's a young petite woman, and even IF the theory the other person had about him "having enough of her issues" was right, even IF she got worked up again and even IF she was being aggressive - with her stature she would not be enough of a physical threat that taking off and leaving her stranded in the wilderness alone would be necessary, nor even justifiable. Take into account her age, and chances are she likely wouldn't have had the survival skills necessary to survive alone in the wilderness, possibly without any food or gear. Again, this is all in response to a theory posted by another user. I didn't make any of this up; another user posted it along with a tone that very much came across as victim blaming.

Kind_Mission

Thanks for explaining you were responding to a theory. After seeing the bodycam footage, I had a very different view of her. People were claiming she was a victim there and it was far from it.

Jabberjunky

I want to see him as stupid. Not malicious.

Then oh idk, call her parents? Try to get her some help? Tell the cops she’s really struggling and she needs a 5150? Doesn’t make it fine to just dump her in the bush/ kill her! He was her fiancée ffs.

BigBlue923

Well they had broken off the engagement before the trip and decided to just keep dating. Just to be clear (as reported).

FairyBread10

That’s the first time I’ve heard that info. Still doesn’t make it any better though.

SwivelPoint

did that female reporter toward the end say “body parts”? ugh. the poor family. i hope alligators eat that piece of shit on the run

WiseWinterWolf

The amount of bears/wolves in that part of the country is enough that they are lucky a body was found at all..

pennypacker2021

We don't know if she was buried and how deep.

PhotojournalistNo456

it looked like whatever they found was something stashed at the base of a thin trunked tree and bush. The spot was so small and I have seen too many horror movies to think we're talking parts right now. not body.

avynray

I see a large black object (bag) in that spot.

xOrion12x

I think the bag is theirs and the spot they seem to be looking at looks totally random and very small. I would guess it is just a part scattered by an animal. He probably hid it in the swampy stuff or just in some bush and animals have had their way. I would say he probably had that as his alibi. He will claim that she was attacked, he couldn't do anything and thought he would look guilty etc etc. If you go to the 3:35ish point of the video, it looks like someone is showing the coroner or someone else pictures on their phone, probably identifying tattoos or something.

PhotojournalistNo456

want to trip? Go find the pic they think is BL walking barefoot in the neighborhood then when you look at his left hand in the pic, the bad image and the reflection on the screen look like hes carrying a bag with a torso or womans breasts. its pure pareidolia but thats what I see a semi transparent bag with a torso - of course its not really there it just looks like it is cuz the reflection...check it out

xOrion12x

Where can I find that?

PhotojournalistNo456

i cant find it now it was a screen shot of the guy holding the phone it was truly wierd...there is one real pixelated version and i think it was a pic of that...but i couldve sworn it was in the video where the guy who trakes the picture stops and shows the pic to someone on the street and was like doesnt this look like him...the guy films it over his shoulder and the glare and all for like 2 seconds- thats what i see.

BL is 25 years old.

Ambitious_Camel_2486

Environmental-Cup224

I apologize, I should having worded it as “acting like a teenager”! Edit:… on second thought it shouldnt be be that surprising if his parents would baby his ass like this, allegedly.

dman255

Oh I couldn’t make the connection I understand now

BeeBeeBuckley

Well, keep in mind that LE has not said a “body” , but “human remains”. They might mot have found an actual body, but body parts, of which fit GP description, and the quantifiable remains are enough to determine that GP is dead.

carpe-jvgvlvm

I was thinking, her tattoos might have been how they identified her remains (since the coroner said to news lady they didn't know if it was male or female remains). I'd forgotten about those tattoos.

cheekygit143

Omg. You are right. That's crazy. Human remains probably means they were dismembered or something. But then again maybe an animal got to her

Constant_Tribulation

She’s been decomposing and picked apart by animals for 3 weeks, it’s more than likely the whole body just heavily decayed

Professional-Ad-7651

Spanish donkey his ass

goodkittymama

So sad. Time to find this scumbag BL.

Pittsburgher23

What a horrible feeling. But like what others have said... there was a very good chance her body was never found. and if brian and his family played their cards right, no case would have been possible against them. Now, her parents will get closure and hopefully justice will be served. I also feel terrible for her family that the last video/detail of their daughter is that police body cam video. had to be tough to watch given how emotional she was. I think those emotions in the video were that she was afraid of him but didnt even realize. The lingering question I have remains... did he actually love her and things fell apart on this trip? or was this his intention from the time they met? Chilling either way.

I thought about the video too. Gabbie seemed so lost, unsure, frustrated and alone :(

He may not of killed her. Maybe, they took time apart as they always did after an argument. Maybe she got lost, was assaulted, attacked by an animal or had an accident. It sounds like he left her for days. His problem is he didn't call for help when he could not find her upon return. However, he had just had that encounter with the police where they would now press charges and deserting her in the wilderness is sketchy in itself. Why he didn't call someone when he could not find her shows some level of gult. But guilty of what?
