I'm both impressed and afraid of that *Firearm!*

N0V-A42

I think you'll get some love over at r/ForgottenWeapons They like odd and old firearms although it may fit the subreddit.

Oh, it looks amazing. But I wouldn't have enough balls to shoot it. I remember when I've got my grandad's rifle and it almost exploded in my hands after a few shots. It was scary but at the same time, I had an adrenaline rush. Still, holding it in my hands was a great privilege because my grandad was a first-class shooter. This rifle is still somewhere in my house, so I can share with you its pic someday. But honestly, I prefer shooting from assault rifles much more. I recently purchased plenty of ammo at https://bulkmunitions.com/ and spent almost $2000 for a couple of boxes. I've used all rounds in a week at the shooting range and don't even regret it. Damn, I hope nobody will tell my wife about it because she really hates when I buy guns & ammo, lol.

Bhramin_Steak

Rolling block? Neat!

Hoplophilia

Falling.

Bhramin_Steak

Still an awesome piece of history.

Hoplophilia

Yep.

johnnykrat

This is both impressive but terrifying. As someone who owns an old falling block, mad respect. Got any more pics of it?

Hoplophilia

That is very cool. Basically a 44-40 shell loaded with shot. Probably unsafe to shoot, but a lovely wall hanger. [Edit] pic of the headstamp? ~~It would be even cooler if it said "44 GG" on it.~~ scratch that. Closer look tells me it won't but still curious.

Pelcat

44-40 shot loads were usually labeled .44 X.L. I don't see why it would be unsafe to shoot it with proper loads, the gun looks to be in decent condition.

Hoplophilia

Yep,but there were some ball rounds known as "game getters" they were rarely stamped ".44 G G". His is obviously shot though. And you're probably right, I was thinking more about the old black powder cartridge than the gun itself. Reloading ball cartridges wouldn't be all that difficult.

Pelcat

I can definitely see how ball loads would be usefull in these smoothbores. The primers on old rounds like these are usually dead or hangfire badly and honestly they're more valuable with the primer unstruck. Indeed, reloading for blackpowder is very forgiving, for most calibers you shouldn't even need to resize your cases!

BeatificBocce818

If you fire that I reckon you’d end up in a different dimension!

YARNIA

Only if has Kentucky Ballistics.

target_meet_arrow

Can someone explain the reactions of fear to this? I'm not very familiar with rolling blocks/falling blocks. I understand the basics of how they work but I'm not seeing why this would be a problem.

autoposting_system

I can't answer directly, but the reason I'm afraid to fire my antique 12 gauge SxS is that despite being a cartridge gun it's designed for black powder. So modern cartridges will fit, but might cause it to explode

target_meet_arrow

Why not just load cartridges with blackpowder? That's what I do for similar weapons.

autoposting_system

Sure, that's what I'd have to do. I've never reloaded and I'm barely starting getting into black powder, so I think I'll continue to wait.

SEND IT!!!!!

[deleted]

Just fire two through your front door and nobody will ever attempt to harm you again!

shanep35

It’s cool

RootTootPrintNShoot

Send it

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s both. It could be a 45 and a 410? It could be a 44 break action? It could be a gun I’m not familiar with...

CerritosAutoSquare

That’s pretty cool

Konditor94

Nice! But I hope you dont fire it, may be dangerous :)

dreadwater

Why do I suddenly want one? Better question why am I turned on by looking at it?

morally-illegal

As a Canadian I got to say that I've never seen anything that uses lipsticks for ammo.

Pelcat

These were very popular in Canada in the late 19th early 20th century. There were shot loads for practically any straight walled caliber.

morally-illegal

huh, neat

LoopsAndBoars

I load those in .44 mag with red dot powder and lead shot in a gelatin pill capsule. Otherwise known as “rat shot.” Great for snakes.

dgsouthe

You can buy many rat shot cartridges, CCI makes many. 44 mag, 357 mag, 45 ACP, 9mm, 22 lr, etc E: I guess it’s just an exempted case, kinda like Judge revolvers

Ow_you_shot_me

So.. is it in .500 magnum? Not asking for friend...

Tactical_Possum

I need the round for my cartridge collection lol

ilikerelish

Neat. An old "game getter" I've only see them in old catalogs, photos, and advertisements.

M6D_Magnum

The original snake shot.

FlingFlanger

The cartridge is probably rarer than the gun!

KRB52

For when a .410 just won't do it.

DoktorOstermann

Really nice. Just saw a similar one at my Cabelas - kciking myself that I did not buy it.
