how would he get promoted at Aston in 2024 when Alonso is on a multi year deal and Stroll is Stroll

NuclearCandle

Lawrance can adopt Drugovich as his son so he can still claim his child is racing for his team.

stokesy1999

I mean Strolls real name is Strulovich, so Felipe is halfway to family already

ABigOne77

Strulovich and Drugovich F1 team, I'd like that

SoothedSnakePlant

How the fuck am I just now learning this

trivran

It sounds fake as fuck yet no!

DaveR007

Actually he was born Lawrence Sheldon Strulović and later anglicized the surname to Strulovitch, and then Stroll.

TimmyHillFan

That was my first thought..sounds like a pipe dream unless Alonso decides to walk away next year. Which seems super unlikely because why would he go to a backmarker and then retire after 1 year at this stage of his career. If he wanted to be competitive just for 2023, he would have stayed at Alpine

m_0tion

Only thing I can think of is if Aston turn out to be shit once again next year and Alonso walks out with his pay check, but who knows what his contract is like.

Reddevilslover69

Stroll retirement maybe?

Appropriate-Fan-6007

Reserve driver is probably the best he will ever get in F1

TheFirmWare

Surely Piastri's talks with Mclaren was just him evaluating his options and is old news now that Alonso is leaving Alpine, right? Why play second fiddle in a non works team when Ocon is less of a challenge? No way he would underestimate Norris like Ricciardo did.

apexcoach

I totally agree and can't imagine these rumors about mclaren have much depth to them

kennyyu88

Yep it was old news prior to Danny Ric confirming he was staying. Talk at the time was Webber and Piastri delaying on Williams to see how McLaren panned out. Of course this will probably be all moot now

zorbacles

the only thing that concerns me is that Alpine havent confirmed it yet. rather they said "they will announce in due course" surely if he was a lock it wouldnt take long to announce it. Personally i would much prefer Piastri in Alpine. I hate the way Daniel has been treated at McLando and with Oscar being a rookie i think it would be even worse. While he may not have the expectations on him that Daniel has, I think that they put too much emphasis on Lando now and oscar would be totally ignored.

GiantTimberWolf

Could be a matter of getting all the paperwork done and contracts signed because Alpine where clearly caught off guard by Alonso move. It might just take a few days to work out all the details for his contract and maybe take back a line deal that was already in work somewhere else.

gregdrou

Maybe thats because he has signed a contract with williams and they try to break it to get him in alpine

GothicGolem29

Idk if Riccardo underestimated him

Retsko1

Overestimated himself?

DReefer

I don’t think it’s either of those. I think McLaren gave him a better opportunity to win and he took it.

Antares_

> Surely Piastri's talks with Mclaren was just him evaluating his options and is old news now that Alonso is leaving Alpine, right? > Why play second fiddle in a non works team when Ocon is less of a challenge? No way he would underestimate Norris like Ricciardo did. Maybe his insider info would suggest that McLaren is a better career path for him, with a higher chance of rolling out a championship-winning car in the next few years? Also, if you're choosing a team based on where you'll have an easier teammate to beat, you've already lost. If you want to be an F1 driver, you need to have the confidence that you can beat anyone in equal machinery.

rydude88

Lol all the comments here aged really badly. It's funny because I was in complete agreement yesterday but we were all wrong.

WaveCandid906

And now Oscar is going to McLaren!

WaveCandid906

Heh

darwinmar

The key thing here: everything happened super fast. She’s not saying Piastri would still go to McLaren, but he was negotiating, probably cause he thought Alonso would stay. Since everyone got surprised by Alonso decision, we don’t know that comes next.

DigitalNomadsEllada

I am atunend that Drugovich is winning with MP... I mean it is not Prema or ART, this has to mean something. Hope to see him in F1. Winning F2 with Prema/ART is one thing, but with an MP? Talent.

Drugovich at Aston would be a great match since they already have a green and yellow car so they could easily work with Brazillian sponsors. Piastri to Mclaren would mean Alpine STILL haven't been able to promote a junior driver since Grosjean. Not really sure who he is better off with really. Alpine are a manufacturer, but Mclaren have generally been more competent in recent years.

makakoloko3000

Mclaren’s main goal seems to be getting an American driver for next years, being he worth it or not. So if I was Piastri I’d keep the hell away from that place. And that comes as a Mclaren fan… They should forget about the American driver pipe dream and focus on the best possible young driver available in 2023 (all of which are French or Brazilian or Australian but not American)

theferret0

Sargeant?

makakoloko3000

He’s losing to Drugovich and Pourchaire. Why should he get a chance in 2023 and not the other two faster drivers? He’s not ready. The only explanation would be “American driver”, and that’s what I mean. I don’t even understand this madness, as if a midfield American driver would suddenly make Americans interested in f1. By that logic, Brazil is just as big of a country but they actually have a huge interest and tradition in f1. An actual giant market for it. Australia too. Drugo and Theo are very obviously much better choices for 2023 than Sargeant - they are outperforming him in f2 and are clearly more mature drivers, whilst being really young still

w00ten

If I'm Piastri I'd be staying *far* away from McLaren. There is a *ton* of competition in that team now with O'Ward pushing for a super license, Rossi probably able to get his back and Palou having the points required. There be wolves in those woods...

-A113

I think Zak *needs* Pato to win the championship in Indycar. He is too valuable in that series. Won’t let him go until that is done

w00ten

I don't disagree but now they have Rossi and Palou. He has insurance.

EscravoDoGoverno

It's gonna be funny as hell if Daddy Stroll sacks his son.

According-Switch-708

It would stupid of Oscar to refuse that Alpine seat. They have been the better team this year and are a works team. Mclaren are in a bit of rut. Even Lando who is very good at adapting is saying that the car is extremely difficult to drive, even for him.

WaveCandid906

He is going to McLaren now

Violetta_ag

No way. Otmar is so biased for Oscar. My bet is on Alpine 100%. No way he's going head to head with Lando, knowing that the Mclaren car is built for him all this time.

WaveCandid906

I think will try

[deleted]

Test and development driver seems the best chance for Felipe into F1. It's like what if Nissany, Hughes or Boschung were leading the championship. Does that mean an F1 seat is close? Of course not. Sure Felipe is better than them and not as old, but all things considered he's just not that attractive for the top of the top, unless he gets a huge sponsor deal that would make Capito's head turn.

[deleted]

The point is it's his 3rd season, and there are younger drivers who are just as good or more promising. Look at De Vries and Latifi recently. Latifi only made it cause of the money. Winning the highest feeder series isn't that important. Felipe could just as well be a Davide Valsecchi in 5 years.

Mochaaaaaaaaaa

hes really not comparable to nissans hughes or boschung though? he is having one of the most dominant f2 seasons in years whilst driving for MP (not saying they are slow, but also not a PREMA or ART) he has also shown talent previously in his rookie year. latifi & zhou both went to F1 after 3 years, i dont see why drugo should be ruled out when, if anything, he is far more qualified than both

MrSplashman77

2025* Alonso stays for 2023 and 2024

racingfan96

I don't think this article talks about Drugovich to Aston specifically. I think it says that he wants a place in "a team" in 2024. Because Alonso's contract is 1+1+1 year deal (options are on Nando's side). So, likely there is no place until 2026 at Aston.

MrSplashman77

Hmm. Albon, Schumacher and Magnussen could all be replaced I guess, after a weak 2023 year. Especially Albon and Magnussen, who already left F1 once, but its unlikely. I feel bad for Drugovich, I'd be really interested to see how he does in F1 but I'm afraid he'll never get the chance.

JForce1

No way Lawrence drops Lance, and the last thing McLaren need is more drivers. They now have 16 different drivers signed for theoretically 3 seats at most.

WaveCandid906

McLaren signed Oscar now
