KY_4_PREZ

I don’t think steampunk was what he was going for 😂

KrisPcream

Yeah this wonderful piece is all function haha

IVIaskerade

Not a trace or brass, leather, or wood either.

turnipsoup

Actually; the gears between each finger are brass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFDdPNjS9wI

CeleryStickBeating

Is the strap leather?

Batsu_gamur

Theres a lack of steam

Blear

Nono, steampunk is when you glue copper gears on a top hat and wear a monocle!

YouJustDid

[umbrellas and blimps](https://youtu.be/Nbq6Wfh9fi4)

grrooOOOAAAaaaaan....

pineapple_calzone

You have to understand, the children on this site today, they think anything without a chip in it is steampunk. I don't think that's necessarily a failing on their part inasmuch as it is a lack of a term to describe it. Steampunk as a sort of nascent concept arose in the 60s and 70s, and didn't get a name until the late 80s. I think a whole new nostalgic, retrofuturistic "punk" aesthetic will arise out of the mechanical technology of the first half of the 20th century. It has the same sort of antiquated charm now that victorian machinery did in the 60s. In fact, I think one already is, but it'll be some time yet before anyone bothers to name it.

identifytarget

> I don't think that's necessarily a failing on their part inasmuch as it is a lack of a term to describe it. Mechanical....the word they're looking for is *mechanical*

Arthaxhsatra

I think you’re talking about dieselpunk!

History_City_

Or atompunk

speakingoutofcont

Maybe nupunk. Kind of.seems appropriate.

Bet_Psychological

clockworkpunk is pretty cool too

Strikew3st

Pump the brakes, [Clockwork Punk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Accident#Clockwork_Punks) has been around for decades as a punk genre influenced by *A Clockwork Orange*. Major Accident, The Adicts, Lower Class Brats, and for those not recognizing these groups, Die Toten Hosen had *Hier kommt Alex* on *Guitar Hero III* from their album [Ein kleines bisschen Horrorschau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ein_kleines_bisschen_Horrorschau)  ("A Little Bit of Horrorshow"), subtitled: Die Lieder aus Clockwork Orange und andere Schmutzige Melodien, "The songs from Clockwork Orange and other dirty melodies.*

Bet_Psychological

I was thinking of an offshoot of steampunk, focused on gears, crystals, and winding things up. but this is interesting

demondesigner1

Why does the word have to be punk?

talentless_hack1

How about just “punk”?

spicy-snow

'punk' by itself already refers to punk rock, otherwise it's used as a suffix to denote a specific type of alternative future aesthetic. besides, it likely already has a name, probably mentioned in one of the above replies.

thethreetriangles

It’s like a sci-fi genre with a “punk culture” aesthetic to it, which takes the industrial revolution and Victorian Era fashion and architectury as its basis; so it can be described as the image of a sci-fi world which existed in the Industrial Revolution Era. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk is the sci-fi vision of a future generation which has witnessed lots of technological innovations and political changes. The reason for their visual contrast is because of the level of technological development that was present when the genres were born.

fuzzyblackyeti

I took a sci Fi lit class and this over the top nerd girl took it and was ABYSMALLY stupid. But the thing that pissed me off was during our cyberpunk section, she claimed that fallout was cyberpunk. Now this girl was the caricature of what reddit believed a 2012 Tumblr girl to be. She was literally only parroting it because fallout 4 was about to release. It bothered me so much.

Alaskan_Narwhal

The only way fallout would be cyberpunk would be if it was set in ancient Rome.

weirdsun

Please go on - interesting aesthetic juxtaposition

Exponential_Rhythm

gamer moment

KushChowda

Jesus christ.....they just mislabeled. One person. Not an entire site of "children" you pretentious fuck. Like someone calling tissue paper Kleenex.

jaspersgroove

You should probably tell him since he put steampunk right in the title of the YouTube video

KY_4_PREZ

I actually did just see when I was watching his new videos a minute ago. Sometime tells me he was going for function over form and prolly just had enough people make the reference

Roast_A_Botch

Things can be functional and have a designed aesthetic. I'd argue this is not the most functional prosthetic and would perform better using modern servos and carbon fiber so form appears to have been a priority too

VindictiveJudge

Clockpunk is closer, but still not quite right.

VladFr

Clockpunk actually is a genre, so you hit the nail on the head there.

throw_every_away

Actually I think it was, considering that his videos are called like “steampunk hand design.”

Legitimate_Crab_3662

It still looks very steampunk so yeah

fishsticks40

He should glue some gears to it

Errodav

Best thing about this is that he started building it BEFORE he lost his hand! Edit: from his TikTok https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8tMk58v/

dijkstras_revenge

Really? I didn't know that

Errodav

From his TikTok https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8tMk58v/

identifytarget

Shiiiit. No wonder. Dude has been doing this for 20 years. Wow...what a serendipity?

fishsticks40

Would have been ironic if he'd spent his life working on a prosthetic foot.

scifishortstory

😂😂😂

drawnograph

Oh god I hope he didn't lop off his fingers making prosthetic fingers :/

BigfootTouchedMe

He cut his fingers off to make testing more realistic.

Laladelic

A true engineer!

dishwashersafe

I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm in awe of this. I can't image all the design and tweaking necessary to get this to work well.

Can_O_Murica

Same boat. I don't know what it is, but some people just *have it*. I can only hope.

Robbie122

Well the guy started on this 30 years ago as a high school project so I imagine 30 years is enough time to get it right lol.

dyondo

hes got so many different models of hand too, some that use electronics

oogiesmuncher

this guys stuff is so freaking cool. but i can’t imagine having 10 lb block of metal strapped to your hand is comfy for long

sipes216

It's a lot less than 10 lb, most of his mechanisms are alum or brass, which is a lot lighter than steel. He also doesn't have the weight of his fingers, and rather than be a stump forever, he's winning. Cool dude.

Norose

Aluminum is a lot lighter than steel but brass is actually denser than iron, common misconception.

IHaveSexWithPenguins

But is it denser than steel?

Norose

Yes, steel is actually less dense than iron due to the carbon content, so brass is also denser than steel.

Deep_Accident_4853

It doesn't weigh more than a kilogram of feathers though.

behaaki

Bonus though, if he needs to wallop something, that metal chunk of a hand probably serves a solid wallop

PetsArentChildren

wallop wallop wallop wallop

Whisper06

Might also count as a weapon in a street fight.

Bylloopy

He's likely gotten used to the weight by now. It's been a few years. He also creates custom 'sockets' for his hand for the best fit and comfort.

Arthreas

He needs to make a final carbon fiber/aluminum or titanium version, taking notes from aerospace design. This could probably also be high-grade plastic too in some areas.

fusiformgyrus

You know what else is uncomfortable? Not having a hand.

sundownsundays

I'm sure as the design progresses he'll be able to find ways to downsize and perhaps use lighter materials.

P3DR0T3

It’s better than no Fckn fingers but what ever

thisguy-probably

Another thing labeled as steampunk because it’s got some brass in it.

CaptFeelsBad

He actually has an entire video about the brass screws he has to custom make to make the hands work like they do, super neat video. But that’s pretty much the *only* brass he used everything else is mostly aluminum.

throw_every_away

He’s the one who called it steampunk

Dank-memes-here

I feel like people classify something that solves something mechanically that would commonly be solved electronically as steampunk, and I get it tbh

ShahanshahShami

steampunk is when yellow metal and no electricity.

No-Preparation4473

Top hat with cogs goes wrrrrrrr

Octopus3535

Yeah cause steam engines make wifi....

delicous_crow_hat

Its neat but how is it anymore steampunk than most forms of manual machinery.

markschmidty

If you grew up with a tablet/smartphone in hand, anything mechanical which could be electronic is considered "steampunk" now. Mechanical typewriters, clocks, etc. It's not technically correct and anyone older than 20 can see that clearly. But for the <20 crowd the distinction is not at all clear. Non-electronic skateboards will be called "steampunk hoverboards," before long. :P

LazerWolfe53

Nice. Was waiting to see if he had a pattern for flipping the bird. That would be pretty sick IMO

CaptFeelsBad

He’s actually had a running thing on his channel that he’s hoping and/or “waiting to get my Gold play button (a million subs) before showing that pattern...” so, if you wanna see it, subscribe to him! I mean, sub to him for the awesome, insanely detailed and nuanced engineering and prosthetic building he does, but yeah, he says it a bunch that he’ll do a proper bird-flipping when he gets his Golden play button.

LazerWolfe53

Haha, that's an awesome answer to that question. You bet I'll subscribe.

CaptFeelsBad

Hell yeah! Haha, but yeah I sat down and watched literally hours of his channel a few days ago, and the dude is awesome in general despite having some serious health issues, and of course losing all his fingers on his left hand (his dominant hand, actually!). Throughout a lot of the videos about the update to his newest hand design (the one in OP’s video, he has a few other ones, he has a *handful*.... I’ll show myself out)... he talks about the grip patterns and how everyone always asks him about flipping the bird. Anyway, the dude is super awesome, wholesome and is well-versed in sheet metal work, engineering, electronics, and an array of other technical skills. He’s always making stuff that can accommodate some type of grip for his missing hand! He even makes a grip for his bow so he can still use it even though he can’t grip it anymore! I highly recommend **[his channel!](https://youtube.com/channel/UCv1xxFkEiAdCVy6foEEUIvw)**

donyahelwa

That's gotta be the "Hello, World! of prostatic hands.

inVizi0n

Uhhh... Prosthetic. Prostatic hands would be something quite different.

Cat_Viking

That's grip pattern 6 :)

DaffyDuckOnLSD

The Mr. Bean hand

AdConsistent7810

Too bad it shreds your dick like a can opener

Firewolf420

A new meaning to "degloving"

Alone-Common8959

groovy

palostabandgrab

Thank you.

AntonyBenedictCamus

Took way too long to find

JustifiedCroissant

He has made a chainsaw prosthetic hand, check out his youtube channel, his name is Ian Davis.

SpectreNC

This isn't steampunk.

rdewalt

This isn't steampunk. And not just because not enough Brown... This actually works and is actually useful. Both are the absolute opposite of Steampunk.

[deleted]

HAIL SCIENCE!

phat-ass-4352

His videos are awesome, I showed this to my friend that’s doing her masters in prosthetics and she geeked out over it lol

Matt_Shlonger

I actually just ran into someone with almost that exact style of, he said he got the design off the internet and had his son 3D print the parts for him, this must’ve been the channel he was talking about! Small world huh?

fuckyoubungie

"Steampunk"

PlasmaSpaz76

Ian Davis made this! I'm one of his Patreon supporters. He's done a lot of cool stuff with it

CHONGASCOOK

Das CooL

ShadowBasic

Was expecting a middle finger grip pattern

Dankirias

There actually is, but video in that post is cropped.

PM_ME_BDSM_FANTASIES

This is automail and I'm here for it

deezdiamondnutz69

Would be pretty metal if that was the hand he jerked it with

Espdp2

At 1:05 he shows his mechanical weiner.

sazerrrac

Where’s my bone saw? I’m in.

asrrak

And this is an example of why humans have the capacity to transform, despair into purpose, suffering to joy, disability to ability, chaos into order, death into life. This reminds me that we can have faith in humanity in that we can use our limitless creativity to solve worlds biggest problems, hunger, poverty, animal suffering, climate change, addiction and violence, discrimination, corruption etc etc etc.

bdbee_

now add a hidden blade from assassins creed

standardtissue

Very disappointed 5th grip pattern wasn't 3 fingers down, middle finger up. Absolutely amazing invention though. Does he make these only for himself or does he sell them to others as well ?

DeUsuahiaALaQuiaca

He says there are six grip patterns, but he only showed five

DemeGeek

Pretty sure you can see him flicking up the index finger on the 3rd grip pattern manually.

standardtissue

:)

Warner20BrosYT

In the original video, he says he’ll reveal the 6th pattern at a certain subscriber milestone, but he shows his hand in the middle finger position at the very end of the video just for a second off of the screen

brokenearth03

This isn't steam punk at all.

toomanyscooters

.. if you're brave enough.

rojm

so much respect for these guys

killerguppy101

Been watching his vids for awhile now, and they are some incredible engineering and machining. Every video, he makes great strides in the design.

I love this guy!!!

_Y0ur_Mum_

Beautiful. This would be the guy to go to if you got arkles wedged in the flange of your transom housing.

Wayfinity

Ash Williams would be so proud of you. Now you just need a chainsaw attachment.

jesus_anal_juice

Beating my meat? No. I’m grinding my meat! 🍖

MoominSong

Wonderful! Reminds me of the mechanisms in old style mechanical calculators.

Bizchasty

At first I felt bad that he lost his fingers on his left hand, but if he could build that thing with his other hand, he must be all right.

CameronDemortez

You literally made a robot hand cooler than it actually is. It’s.. it’s.. awesome

Zachbern

Imagine getting punched in the face by that hand..

Feeling_Ad_6126

Fucking genius

DACO2

My childhood dreams of becoming a Bionicle are looking slightly more possible now.

Neptune3434

Someone is taking out some evil dead tonight.

lSylerl

This awesome, reminds me of a character an Anime called Eduardo Elwric. The vibes of not getting electronic tecnology os this arm is the same on Anime. Simple amazing!

ILikePracticalGifts

Would be cool if he could change grip patterns with only the thumb

GFPpigeon

1 step closer to power armour

raveydavey123

Ash and his booomm stick.

justa-necron-warrior

Isn't this an item in tf2

thefrodster123

That’s fuckin rad

Educational-Year3146

This guy is incredible. Straight up creating super effective prosthetics that make him look like hes straight outta warhammer 40k

[deleted]

I feel bad for this guy because the only reason he’s building a prosthetic is because his Medicare would pay for one, because it “wasn’t nessesary”

framsanon

Is there also a grip pattern for just the middle finger?

justRangel

u/savevideobot

hiyourbfisdeadsorry

technically gearpunk

LoveNighto

This guy insane..

ClamatoDiver

Amazing work, but just like another recent hand that was posted, the engineer left out a vital function. There's no flip the bird mode.

solidgold70

Watching the evolution of his engineering is amazing. How quickly he can change patterns clutches in finger joints?!?!?!?!?

Petten11

It's like the guy from Logan, dope!

ArcaneViktor

Glorious evolution.

Unweptbuzzard16

It kind of look like he used lifters from a engine

Sub2Maxomega2

He did like I think around 150 of those hands

Stargazer1417

Disappointed that he didn’t give us a middle finger at the end.

PlagueMan1

And FNAF begins!

jack_is_not_so_kool

Is it made of Lego or am I stupid

THSeaQueen

More of a exoskeleton really, but still really cool.

Dependent_Factor_982

An exoskeleton would go over existing fingers not replace missing ones

THSeaQueen

I didn't see his fingers were missing. It's titled prosthetic hand, so I'd assume he meant something to go over a stump. This just fits on the outside of an already existing hand and I just assumed his fingers were in the things like gloves. So yes, this is an exoskeleton for a hand.

rektum_expander

Im seeing a LOT of pinch points on that thing!

colbyjkng

Get a finger stuck in there it would come clean off

notawkward

I figured the 5th grip pattern would have been the middle finger.

YuropLMAO

Did he build this off an existing design or did he really start from scratch with every single part?

Botlawson

From scratch.

Slottech88

That is so sick.

sexhipster

Automail.

sidman1324

I got confused by all techno jargon he was spewing but I’m glad he’s happy with it 😂

digitaljestin

That's straight up FMA automail!

darklion125

But which one holds up the middle finger

uhavethreeballs

Pronk78

Wow.

heyway

Is it steam powered?

ThrowawayBrowse125

Not steampunk lmao What a fucking redditor post title
