Aluminautical

Hopefully, that's a real-time video. Too often, these things move at a snail's pace, for safety reasons apparently, and it takes two minutes to spin the car and lift it up. I say let's get on with it. The car drops a bit at the very end. Wonder if that's a lift underneath, or just the default hydraulic suspension action...

Chimalez

There's a person walking in the background for comparison. It looks like it may be sped up slightly, but not by much.

THE_CENTURION

It definitely looks like there's something that comes up from underneath the car to support it and hold it in place, I think you can just see it under the front bumper. Lining that up when you park would be super hard though...

ikilledtupac

The black things are just the bumper on the Citroen I think. There are wheel chocks underneath it tho I’m sure

THE_CENTURION

Yeah not the black things. If you look juuuuust to the left of the black thing on the right side of the screen, you can see there's some kind of cutout in the plate the car is on, and a hint of a gray thing.

ikilledtupac

Oh yeah yes. The carvana things are faster than you’d thing but they’re totally enclosed

97RallyWagon

It seems the car is on a trolley of sorts to get in and out of storage.for long term storage, it is a good idea to "unload" the suspension and tires to reduce stress. I would imagine *some* of the storage trolleys have a super short 4-post Jack to lift the frame/chassis and relieve those stresses. I realize this would add complexity and cost, that's why I mentioned *some* may have that perk. I would imagine this is Europe and is an old installation. It would just make sense to me that they added a feature to preserve old tires and suspension components from the woes of storage... Those technologies weren't as resilient as they have become.

Ophidahlia

It looks like there's a couple sets of rails past the car, and multiple levels, so I think you're right and there's probably underground storage for multiple cars down there. You probably don't have a setup like this without also having an expensive car collection to use it with.

-taKeshi_Kovacs-

you can see the bank sign on behind ... it's definitely an italian installation ( i'm sure on this ) ... i suggest one big city of north italy ;)

-taKeshi_Kovacs-

i see now ... italian sign ''ingresso" too ;)

olderaccount

> The car drops a bit at the very end. Wonder if that's a lift underneath Once the cars go into the system, they are no longer riding on their wheels. They get picked up by little trolleys that ride on those rails visible down below. The car dropping at the end was the trolley lowering it back onto its wheels.

lemons_of_doubt

> move at a snail's pace, for safety reasons apparently yes, when moving big heavy things you have the problem of slowing down. if you come to a dead stop from a walk you will have to catch yourself so you don't fall over, something weighing 10 tons has this problem on a much bigger scale. so if you want to move it faster you need to put in more energy and if something goes wrong that energy has to go somewhere which can mean firing a metal beam out of the mechanism like it was a cannon, also someone falls into it will not stop or even slow as it crushes them like a mellon. making it slow gives people time to get out of the way. And the last and biggest reason things like this are slow is money. if you want to make it go faster you need a lot more motor power in, and you need a lot more stopping power out, and a lot more expensive parts and design all around. much cheaper just to get a normal motor and gear it to hell. Reminder of how stupid people are [woman walks into parking carousel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tlk5flheOc)

MrWhite

That’s why megabots are so disappointing when people attempt to make them in real-life. It takes a huge amount of power to make them move quickly like you see in movies.

letsindulge

Didn’t the US and Japan have a giant megabot fight? If I recall they were moving pretty fast.

ric2b

Meh, not that fast: https://youtu.be/Z-ouLX8Q9UM (starts at 15m)

The_oli4

My teacher used to say if you made something user friendly and idiot proof. The world will make bigger idiots.

Laladelic

You know, having 23 cars really does make life more difficult sometimes. I fucking hate it whenever I have to wait for my Ferrari to come out of the underground storage. I mean, all I asked for was a decent ride to the airport whenever I need to get on my private jet. At this point I'm seriously considering to just use 2020 Jaguar. Gotta live simple, ya know.

Comprehensive-Fun47

That's why you need to have your butler call ahead, so you don't have to waste your precious time waiting on the Ferrari to come upstairs.

LeoLaDawg

Awfully smooth for a chain drive.

pedroperez1000

It's CGI

machinist_jack

Is this an assumption? The technology exists to do this and quite safely.

afs5982

You're CGI *Yes, it's stupid and childish. I don't care.*

Firewolf420

Agreed 100% I like my machines fast and loose.

Salamandar3500

Hydraulic suspension. Check out the Citroën DS, it's an amazingly technical 1960 car.

O-hmmm

Is the parking spot worth more than the car? I'd say so. At the old Henry Ford mansion there is a rotating parking spot though not underground. It was said it was installed just so the driver would not have to back out.

Cthell

Car turntables were fairly common in parking garages - but once cars got too big for them, they were usually just paved over or deactivated

FoximaCentauri

When was that? In the US at least cars have been very big for a pretty long while now.

thelawtalkingguy

2012

Jack_Joke

Everybody remembers the big jump in car size in June 2012 and the subsequent paving over of every car turntable in July. Really common knowledge at this point.

_Diskreet_

So a long while ago.

Cthell

I want to say post-ww2? The point when cars went from having running boards to being land yachts

Craaaaaaabpeople

As a public parking lot it actually holds many vehicles. The dense city centre is a nightmare to park in on the weekends, so people are willing to pay the extra euro or two for the luxury. Edit: https://goo.gl/maps/GtBpGSNwP43DUyAB8

CCPareNazies

The car was a mega best-seller in Europe, literal millions were made. You can get a good one from 30.000-70.000 euros.

Firewolf420

Wow, only 70 euros? That's cheap! I got that in my wallet right now! Edit: I'm not deleting the joke! Engineers have bad senses of humor! I should know, I am one!

murse_joe

I respect the joke and taking the downvotes Your boos mean nothing!

_name_of_the_user_

Why is this downvoted? And why does the person above have three sig figs for a money amount?

Fenris2020

Ugh the sig fig portion of my engineering schooling was unnecessarily painful, but this did make me chuckle.

_name_of_the_user_

Glad to be of service. It's weird what holds up some people. I didn't do engineering but I'm a technician. Sig figs I was fine with. Statics though... Grrr

Fenris2020

I’m a machinist in an aerospace company, most of our products have super tight tolerances at our end of the process so I’m used to dealing with tenths and thousands of an inch, anything getting into metric or dealing with mass and newton’s is frustrating.

KabEden

Thank you, you made me smile. /s I hate that dot/comma switch problem.

_name_of_the_user_

Honestly, we need a world standard for that. Everything else in metric is standardized, why not the decimal notation?

ssl-3

https://xkcd.com/927/

_name_of_the_user_

So true

Firewolf420

I just figured he was being significantly exact!

Dysan27

Probably depends on how many spots there are in the whole garage. You can see at least 3 as it spins around. And we have no idea how many levels down it goes.

BloodAndSand44

A Citroen DS in that type of condition will be worth a fair bit. Design in the 50’s with features you would not see in other cars to the 80’s.

RJPeaches

And when you drive past the first person that sees you leave your garage you tell them the truth- *”I’m Batman.”*

mark_lee

I think that anyone who installs one of these is legally obligated to only park a replica Batmobile in it.

lolwatisdis

six of them, from different generations of TV and movies. The Nolan bat-tank-mobile sits on a jump ramp from the roof of the building next door.

tazebot

keepthepace

The villain who drove heavily gadgetized DS was Fantomas. This car had its time of prestige in France, it used to be presidents' cars.

wes7946

Of course the owner of this marvel would have a Citroen!

tasslehawf

Debadged for some reason.

CCPareNazies

No no a lot of DS only had the badge on the rear. Its because the hood was the largest piece of single pressed aluminium at the time. That is why those that do have it in a long steel contraption all along the hood. Just the badge would case denting during installation.

UnlessRoundIsFunny

It is just the perfect car to emerge from that contraption, right? I have an irrational desire to own a DS one day.

SunnyDeLuna

That's a Citroen!? Holy shit, it looks so fucking good. Reminds me of a Z8 which is still my favorite car. Does anyone happen to know the model name for this?

azf56

It's a Citroen DS

NorwegianGuy2707

Citroen DS, IMHO the most innovative car of the late 20th century. It had front wheel drive, self stabilizing hydropneumatic suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, self-centering power steering, and *actual* aerodynamics. In 1955, most European cars looked like [this.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Opel_Olympia_Rekord%2C_Bj._1955_%282014-06-15_Sp%29.JPG) And then Citroen launched this freaking [spaceship.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/1967_Citroen_ID19B_pic3.JPG)

upstatenyengineer

A relative of mine is pristine-restoring a Citroen XM in a garage in NJ. I think the model he is working on is from the 60s and was one of the world’s first fuel injected autos. Couple other fun facts - Citroen’s suspension is unique. Instead of springs/shocks there are hydro pneumatic cylinders that allow the car to be risen/lowered by the driver for weather or road conditions. Also- did you know a private American company attempted to bring the Citroen back to America in the late 80s/early 90s? They were called CX Automotive and would take factory Citroens out of France and convert them to American (primarily emissions) standards at a factory in Belgium before shipping to select dealers in the US. Whoever is truly interested in an American perspective on these cars let me know- I could maybe put you in touch with some people.

VEC7OR

XM was from the 90s, CX or GS perhaps? US has suprising amount of SMs tho.

SixStringerSoldier

Disk breaks on a production car in '55, when Enzo Ferrari was still making the bold claim that his drums were the _only_ way to efficiently slow a vehicle in race conditions.

j-random

TBF, drums are a lot more effective than discs, that's why they're used on large trucks. OTOH, they don't stay effective when they're hot, which is why Ferraris don't use them anymore.

Salamandar3500

My granddad has one in perfect working state, and even though i know a bit about repairing cars, i'm FREAKING SCARED about the day i'll have to look inside and figure out what's wrong.

sm340v8

Citroen DS, produced from 1955 to 1975.

keepthepace

Fantomas is not going to drive a Jeep.

orbitaljunkie

That's a Citroen DS right? It's 70" in width. I thought it looked really narrow in the video but I guess my (modern) car is only 73". Wonder when this lift was built - definitely looks optimized for older vehicles.

sm340v8

DS it is indeed

kipknightly

I need Colin Furze to see this.

I wonder what his will work like, his plan is that it will do all the things this one does (hide the car(s) rotate, lift), but I wouldn't be surprised if he made his to house a few cars When the late brake show interviewed him they described him as building Tracey Island (Thunderbirds) in suburbia

You have to park very carefully every single time for this to work out.

prova2

Intesa Sanpaolo oh yeah

Farfignugen42

What is the point of rotating the car underground? Seems to add complexity for zero gain. Also, you would have to park perfectly every time or bye bye mirrors. And maybe bumpers.

arafella

The cars are stored in a curricular pattern

pseudopsud

The owner probably doesn't like reversing into or out of the driveway

Farfignugen42

Maybe. It doesn't show them parking, so maybe it is turned around.

coranos2

Now post the video where the guy parks a car on top and forgets about it, so he opens the garage under a car and oopsie

HuddyBuddyGreatness

What’s the point of the car spinning? Why not just have it already facing the right direction to save time? Like if they drive it in facing one way, just turn it before they come back

Hiltoyeah

All fun and games till it fails and they charge you god knows how much just to look at it...

OGCelaris

Na, it just takes a month to get your car back since they had to fabricate new parts.

liquidSnake_420

The car, Citroen Ds3 is engineering boner material itself. It can stay straight on 3 wheels

kindersaft

pistolwinky

Glad to see not everyone glossed over the massively iconic car that rode up on that thing. Once I saw the car that became the engineering porn.

Buibenfooph

Cool but I wouldn’t like to have children around it. Looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Zpalq

Like a few people, I thought this was cgi interpolated over real world footage. So I looked it up, this is a real thing, called a trevipark. However, there are only 3 in Italy, and none of them are near an Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, nor have they ever been in an area that resembles this location. I believe this is a promotional video for their product.

Craaaaaaabpeople

meadowsirl

Some people see an underground garage some people see a unsafe mangle.

Helios53

I hope it's installed on high ground. Might not look so cool in a big rain storm.

madmaxGMR

This is CGI cropped onto real footage. Garage and car are both CGI, the camera guy just filmed an empty plot of land. Also, this is in Italy btw.

Craaaaaaabpeople

Why speak with such certainty when you took zero time to research? It exists and it's in Brescia.

system3601

I dont buy it. Its either a proof of concept or just CGI or both. Its very slim and normal cars will get dents or at least have their mirrors broken, and no one can park so perfectly aligned with the mechanism to begin with.
