The car industry is not to blame! They are only filling demand, if we didn't buy SUVs they wouldn't make them. It is really that simple.

mrpicklemtb

Facts, blame the soccer mums instead

Hamstah_J

Honestly SUV buyers are younger and younger now, it's the old people that's driving sedans now

Soccer moms aren't in their early 20s

Hamstah_J

Sounds a bit late medically but seems normal to me, also soccer moms usually has more than 3 kids, so it depends

teklegion

More like 30's -40's unless she had a kid in her 40's

reidlos1624

Early twenties aren't buying new cars. Average age of a new car buyer is like 53 so... Still the old folks driving sales

teklegion

Not true most car companies try to sell people in their 30s to 40s this is because people in those ages have more flexible spending. At that age group typically they would move up to a better position at work or get a much higher pay. Plus they know what direction they are going in life, family, fancy car, house etc. Companies knows this, people in their 20s don't have real money they're usually just out of college or working a crabby job, people in their 50s and 60s are have a stricter budget, typically don't spend money outside their needs. 70+ It is about retirement age.

reidlos1624

https://www.statista.com/chart/20048/us-buyers-of-new-car-by-age-group/ A quick Google search shows that I'm exactly right, I actually looked it up before posting. Keep in mind I didn't say who car companies are marketing toward, only who is the actual average buyer. I can understand that companies are marketing toward a certain age in the hopes of poaching customers and while they're purchases aren't insignificant they're not the largest group purchasing cars. Interestingly enough your claim of lower age for average buyer was true a decade or so ago.

msmshm

I'm 28, are you saying I'm old? But I won't lie the lack of sedans saddens me day by day, releases by releases.

Hamstah_J

Excluding car enthusiasts, most young people buys SUV/Crossovers now

msmshm

Unfortunately yes. Those who can afford it buy suv/xuv. Those who can't buys autos sedans. I'm currently willing to buy a barebones variant just for a manual sedan and it's also the only new car model that have m/t in my country. Maybe in a year or so, just gonna start researching my current cost of using a 37 year old car that was hand me downed 10 years ago.

reidlos1624

I really want a good wagon... With a manual please. I know of two still offered

snero3

You're 28! Like are you retiring next year boomer /s

msmshm

29 is an odd number to retire. Make 30 then I'll happily retire from this world.

Timmytheimploder

Older folks do like crossovers - high hip point makes getting out easier.

C-Dub178

Well then fuck the younins that buy SUVs

IRefuseToPickAName

Soccer moms were young once

Hamstah_J

Not when they're buying minivans tho

darkstar3333

Back in my day we crammed 5 people into a Geo Metro. 0-40 depended on people getting out helping it get into 3rd.

Papapene-bigpene

Which doesn’t make sense People aren’t having as much kids and don’t want them (everything is expensive everyday)

Hamstah_J

SUV & Crossovers nowadays are more of a symbol of freedom, adventure and lifestyle, instead of just some boring people carrier, plus nowadays SUV & Crossovers are about as spacious as a big hatchback

Built2Smell

That's only half the story... There's not a single thing a CRV can do that my Fit couldn't do. Unless your car is slammed, any hatchback or sedan will get you into any BLM campsite out in the boondocks, or through even most remote fire roads. And if you somehow need more than that, a fwd CRV isn't gonna be your answer. The real reason is safety. Most new full size trucks won't even see a Miata on the road. The extra height of a x-over improves visibility in traffic. And the extra inertia reduces whiplash if they get rear ended. Basically cars are getting bigger in an arms race against other cars

bettafishRBLX

Aren't they also excluded from some safety rules because of their size

ZebraUnion

I blame crumbling infrastructure. I too am now in an SUV (Lexus GX, so at least it’s a cool-ish one. Jeremiah know!) because as much as I loved my W140 S class, 528i Touring, SAAB 9-3 hatch, and others, I love that I’m no longer regularly replacing bent rims, blown struts, A-arms, wheel bearings and oil pans. Not to mention now that my town is filled with meth’d out lifted bro dozers, I don’t really wanna take one of their welded FuckFab bumpers directly to the face in a wreck. I drove my parents Taurus wagon a few weeks back and I felt likeI was in a slammed Miata. Everywhere I went I had some Ram’s FuckFab pressed up against the back glass with its aftermarket laser beam LEDs burning a hole in the back of my head. Shit was fucking stressful AF. Then I climbed back up into my Lexus bank vault with its ladder frame, V8, solid rear axle and curtain airbags and let out one of those “not doing that again” sighs. I miss cars so bad, ..but I can’t say I’m gonna go back to one anytime soon. Edit; wordses

teklegion

Well said. *Cheer*

ZebraUnion

Thank ya! Cheers to you too, bish!

mrpicklemtb

Yeah I have no problem with ladder frame and solid axle SUV's because they are actually capable of doing what they advertise, it's all the cars that pretend to be offroaders (crossovers and wanna be SUV's) that I hate, especially because they're marketed to people who live in cities that would never even consider driving down a gravel road Also I've never been in my lowered wagon and felt worried about someone behind me, you probably were just not used to the ride height, I feel more uncomfortable in lifted cars like my new hilux than my wagon

veedubfreak

"We". I miss station wagons.

JesusIsMyLord666

It's even worse for EVs. The only thing that comes close is KIA EV6 but that's still just a low crossover.

Saaaaaaaaab

People are so mad the businesses are making decisions that most of the public want lol. They aren’t stupid

Sergey32321

Ye but at least not disrespect the amazing cars and name them something new and lame like they should be

snero3

Again it is just supply and demand issue. If they are going to sell more SUVs by naming them "Mustang, Corvette" etc... they will. The reason is that they are a car COMPANY, and their number 1 goal is to make money. They are not here to make cars to please car guys (we probably make up < 0.5% of their total sales). If the consumer generally doesn't like this type of naming then we should just stop buying them, but we don't so they won't stop naming them like this. There is a really good article/story here [https://youtu.be/\_ApPIEnAjns](https://youtu.be/_ApPIEnAjns) on what happens (in this case a bike company) when the company solely focus on making a awesome engineered product at the expense of everything else. \-- like any buiness you have to make what the people want and right now it is SUV's, in the 70-90's it was sedans.

Fortehlulz33

Yeah I mean the Mach E is labeled as a "Mustang", the Model X is often listed as a hatch or SUV on auto sites, and favorite models like Mazda 3's and Impreza hatches are getting more and more spotlight.

AsleepGarden219

In addition to filling demands, government writes goofy regulations that incentivize weird behavior

dochoiday

No they are to blame, yes crossovers are the big money makers and no I don’t expect them to not sell what makes money, that’s their job. However there is nothing stopping them from just giving the suvs a new name and leaving the mustang and eclipse name out of it.

darkstar3333

The biggest reason why we got a CX-5 was because it handled like a car. Very few full size wagons/sedans even available. At this rate my other full size hybrid sedan might just retain value for years.

BlanchTheRaptor

the industry is the one pushing SUVs though. theyre the ones that told the masses that SUVs are cool. if they all of a sudden started pushing sedans as hard we'd see a spike in sedan sales

RLD-Kemy

OK... but why is Toyota making the GR86 if all people wants are SUVs ? I know why there is a Yaris GR though, to have a car in Rally competitions.

aacid

Watch donut video about ceo of toyota, toyoda. He is huge car guy himself, whats why

Shooshish

I mean the cx-5 is a thing

Shooshish

Plus it is an mx5 suv same light signature and all Edit : it's more the cx-3

StankAss69_420

What do you mean , the Miata is turning into an electric pickup truck. S/

Bot stole my post

HotshotRaptor

Man just reposted a top post from just less than a year ago

IV97

Didn’t even change my title :(

nmgonzo

I understand

Tomarse

Cross-overs are like the orthopedic shoe of cars.

morallycorruptgirl

It feels like the automotive industry is killing the very thing that I love. This hits deep.

AngrySexFace

I will admit i do like cross overs and i do think spazzed out engine swapped turbo'd older CRVs, RAV4s are cool. At the same time im pissed at Mitsubishi for ruining the Eclipse

somecrazydude13

My monkey brain only understand SUV or car, me no like crossover

shadowwhite98

Reject suv return to wagon

Flimflomzimzoom

I don’t understand why people are soooo obsessed with suvs. I loved having an suv as my first car (xc90) because I slept in it, hauled bikes, carried shit and it was still a ton of fun to drive. 99% of people I meet with suvs could literally manage with literally a smart car. You don’t need a massive interior to pick up the shopping once a week. My best friends mum had a Escalade. All she did with that monstrosity was drive her kids to school and swimming lessons.

bbull412

Yhea thats true car industry as become such shit

MercedesCookie

I swear if they make a hybrid CUV and call it the "Miata" there will be hell to pay.

Mrots3

I blame car companies for not being creative enough to come up with a new name for their cars.

miryks43

I hate the new mustang

teklegion

Doesn't James drive an SUV? ;-)
