Blue_3agle

These are a banned toy in the UK. Because some children swollowed them and they magnetised together at different parts of the digestive system and caused internal bleeding. I personally had loads of fun with this toy.

[deleted]

... by giving it to random kids on the street?

Blue_3agle

Hahaha yes... Nah I meant when I had it as a kid 😂

smug_muffin

I work in a pediatric ICU where we currently have a toddler who swallowed 3 magnets that broke off a toy. The kid nearly died from an intestinal perforation and still has a long road to recovery. So yes, lots of fun for the appropriate ages, but if there's even a possibility of a child being around, please avoid.

Blue_3agle

Yup, it's absolutely awful :(

CocaineIsNatural

Which toy was it?

joksterjen

Bucky Balls

CocaineIsNatural

Not OP, and Bucky Balls don't break off.

[deleted]

Although you could say the same thing about any small item

smug_muffin

Not really. Magnets and button batteries are the only 2 things I care about. And magnets only if more than one is ingested.

[deleted]

No because if you have two magnets in you small intestine for example, they could attract and connect through your tissue. That can't happen with non-magnetic toys.

oh_not_again_please

When did they get banned, I remember having them as a kid, until relatively recently EDIT: where did you find out they were banned, I found a few articles saying they should be, but toys like Magnetix are definitely still available.

Blue_3agle

https://www.reuters.com/article/megabrands-recall/update-1-mega-brands-shares-sag-after-magnetic-toy-recall-idUSN1759352620080317?edition-redirect=uk This is the us recall, can't find the UK specific one. And yea I still have these in my loft.

oh_not_again_please

Thanks for finding that, I didn't see one, I've definitely got some lying around in my parents house too!

CocaineIsNatural

This is old info, they are no longer banned in the US - https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/06/buckyballs-are-back/ Just don't give things to kids, that kids shouldn't play with or swallow.

Illustrious-Science3

I had lawn darts as a kid. Took them long enough to ban those.

CocaineIsNatural

They are not banned in the US currently. They were for awhile, but after a court case they are back. https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/06/buckyballs-are-back/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet_toys And if people think they should be banned, we would also ban the ear buds that have the magnets on the back, and other useful things. We can't make everything safe for kids. Some things should be kept away. And remember that kids like to put things in their mouth. So accidental swallowing is common for anything small a child gets.

CharlesC2018

This particular thing wasn't just small children though. Iirc one of the bigger lawsuits was from the family of a teenager who pretended to have a tongue stud with a magnet on top and bottom of her tongue. Swallowed magnets, was too embarrassed to tell anyone and nearly died from a perforated bowel. It's asinine to ban them for that reason, but goes to show kids are stupid at any age.

Adolf_hilters_ghost

People forget cancel culture existed before the internet, that and most of the people trying to do the cancelling were lazy parents. I still remember the lady who let her 4 and 6 year old watch ‘child’s play,’ after the movie the eldest boy walked the younger brother to a train track and tried to tie him to the track. That lady had lots of energy attacking the sale and distribution of the movie, not so much energy used to notice the ‘R’ rating on the box, or the energy to stop a 4 and 6 year old from leaving the house with a length of rope on an undisclosed adventure to the train station.

[deleted]

If you are referring to the Jamie Bulger [Wikipedia ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_James_Bulger)case you should get your facts straight.

Adolf_hilters_ghost

Ok peanut, let’s break a few things down. Firstly I’m not referring to that case, Secondly I don’t need to get anything straight. I prefaced my comment as ‘I remember’ meaning I’m relaying an anecdote from for 25 years ago, in vague fashion for the purpose of a brief comment to a completely anonymous internet stranger. I’m not declaring facts under oath before the Supreme Court, take your straight facts, roll em up real tight, and shove em up your ass.

[deleted]

Haha. 😂 You make absolutely no sense. What were you referring to? Something you seem to remember but you were too lazy to check while you have the internet at your fingertips? Looking forward to your highly enlightened reaction.

deelowe

Sort of. I don't know the status, but one of the main companies who fought this and helped get the law reversed, zen magnets, ended up folding b/c they ran out of options for continuing to sell their product. The issue is that there's some sort of compliance thing that needs to be done and smaller companies can afford it.

_johnlennonsglasses

Fucking kids, man, ruining everything.

[deleted]

That's why I try to stay as far away from kids as I can

_johnlennonsglasses

Very wise

Dr-Mourn

Ah cool, at least y'all have kinder eggs, that shit was the bomb untill someone let their kid eat the whole fucking thing. Do you know how hard it is to swallow one of those fuckers whole?

joksterjen

The U.S. Kinder eggs are different from the European ones because the toy item cannot be enclosed inside the egg in the U.S. version. So we have the toy on one side and we have icing with chocolate balls on the other. Both sides sealed separately.

Dr-Mourn

And it tastes God awful yes

CocaineIsNatural

Do you have a link? I can't find where they are banned in the UK. And people have falsely reported that they are banned in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet_toys But yes, keep these away from kids (or adults) that might swallow them. Swallow two at different times and they will eat a hole through the intestines to get to each other. And holes in the intestine are nasty.

Hyposanity

I was about to say something along the lines of "damn now I know what to get my future children" and then I saw this and I was like "oh DUH! Choking hazard!"🤦‍♀️

Blue_3agle

I think that's the problem it's super creative and fun but without 100% adult supervision, it can be very dangerous.

ei283

iirc it was the same in the US for a while

Blue_3agle

Yup, see my link in another comment.

The14thScorpion

What is this toy called? I googled magnet balls and toys and everything I see is colored garbage. Where can I find this?

Blue_3agle

"magnetix" was the one that had the recalls in England. But there is many brands and types etc

juliosteinlager

I've seen them sold as buckyballs years ago.

iterationnull

Weirdest Avengers merch ever...

eccentric_eggplant

thank you for the image i didn't need in my head

juliosteinlager

I thought he only lost his arm.

nicethingyoucanthave

> children swollowed them and they magnetised together at different parts of the digestive system The amazing thing about that story is that it implies these idiot kids swallowed magnets not once, but twice, and did it some hours apart. See, if they'd eaten two magnets at the same time, they would stick together inside the stomach and there wouldn't be a problem. The kids had to eat a magnet, wait a few hours, then eat another one.

Whisper

At that point, my reaction is "try thinking of it as evolution in action".

carllucey

Definitely not banned in the UK.

Mind-Your-Mannurse

Me: there’s no way I’m gonna watch a whole video about stupid magnets. Five min later: man, that was pretty neat.

femaleZapBrannigan

Halfway through I was like what am I doing? But just kept watching.

ResolveSuitable

expensive

Johnnymak0071

Thinking the same thing. Looks cool, probably cost them a stimmy or 2

witherkila

huh, never heard someone use the phrase "stimmy" before...I'm gonna start using that.

XSmeh

See, now I'm just dissatisfied by the amount of magnets I own.

Adam-West

Does the magnetic field on magnets fade? Like if you left that light there for 500 years would it just slowly crumble over time or would it just randomly fall apart one day like dropping a bucket of marbles.

towelflush

Just googled, these are neodymium magnets which lose less then 1% of their strength over 10 years. So in 500 years their strength would be more than 0.99^50 ~0.605, so they keep more than 60% of their strength. As seen by how aggressive the magnets snap together I predict that the 60% would be more than enough to keep it together. In conclusion, if you wouldn't touch it nothing would happen other than that the lights would probably die

Resist_Infamous

I had a set of these for a few years and I always wondered about that. Only thing bad that I noticed was the metal coating chips off of them from constant snapping together and the inside metal rusted and chipped away even faster so they just made a crumbly mess.

haewood

This should probably be higher, I didn't know the interior would rust when the plating is gone.

The_Mdk

At least they'll be easy to pull out... somehow?

Astecheee

NOPE. Let me repeat that for those in the back. #NOPE# Magnets are an unbelievably dangerous sex toy. They can and will pull apart, and then you’re... fucked. There’s a reason even solid silicone toys have flared bases. You don’t fuck with fuck toys.

mermaidrampage

"You don't fuck with fuck toys" I thought that was exactly what you did with fuck toys.

Astecheee

Nah you fuck yourself. Totally different. Like there’s a difference between fucking with a car and fucking a car.

This is better than porn

Starman68

When I was a kid in the 70s in the UK (council house Manchester), magnets and ball bearings were almost mythical things. At school if a kid had a ball bearing their popularity was secured for weeks. A strong magent? That was something you'd queue to see for a while. I tell this to my son and he just rolls his eyes. Other things that no one had; Ladders, paint brushes, drills, extension cords.

Kermit_the_hog

Entitled kids these days, smh.. they have no idea how magnetized they have it.

carllucey

And jobs.

Starman68

You're thinking of Liverpool. They didn't have jobs but they did have drugs.

carllucey

Whatever, anywhere north of Watford should be concreted over.

And if you want a cathedral, they've got one to spare. If there are any scousers reading I'd love to hear about your legendary sense of humour. Apparently every comics toughest night is in Liverpool because all the locals think they are natural comedians.

I’m sure they’re magnetic too though.

ThoiZz

That magnet slicer is looking nice

TheWorldWrecker

Imagine getting your finger pinched between the magnets. Ouch...

JRansomBioDermKiller

What am I missing on some of these parts? I understand when he’s building things but what was the point of deli slicing them one row at a time.....to only put them right back together?

Is_Actually_Sans

Magnets

JRansomBioDermKiller

Yes

Lakitna

It looked like he put the rows in alternating polerisation. Which is why the iron sheets never stuck to the magnets. I might be wrong though

GuyPassingByHere

GreatLookingGuy

You can’t just remove the magnets one at a time due the magnetic fields involved. It won’t break the magnets but it can easily deform the entire piece if you try modifying it in ways you don’t understand. The traditional challenge with these is just to take x by x by x of them and form that into a cube. And it is definitely not as simple as just stacking them into one, they’ll just form into a blob that way. I thought it was silly at first too but using that “cutting machine” this guy probably saves hours and also lots of needless annoyance.

StarrCreationsLLC

If they are rare earth magnets, which they seem to be, it can be VERY hard to separate them and sometimes, if you do it wrong or if they slip out of your hand, they can slam back together and shatter like glass. I think that was a machine he built to make separating them much easier.

JRansomBioDermKiller

Yeah but I just mean he cut them from a “sheet” into lines and then just reassembled them right back into “sheets”.

Jaxad0127

Also, he positioned the rows opposite of what they were. In the cube, the fields were aligned to stay together. Using the metal plates, he forced them together in rows of opposite alignment. That's why when he tossed the coins on them they floated around instead of sticking: magnetic fields in both orientations can produce that affect instead of simply attracting other metal. EDIT: at 0:52 you can see him drawing a dot on one of the cubes. At 1:07, every other row has a dot visible; the other rows have their dot downwards to ensure opposite alignment.

Fujioama

I think he does it simply because it looks "cool".

StarrCreationsLLC

Yeah you’re right.. if I had to guess I would say that trying to line the whole sheet up with that piece of metal would be harder than doing it one strip at a time. Also making it a little off center and then trying to remove them from that sheet to start over is probably a pain in the ass. These things are just a pain to work with. Anyway that’s just my guess.

No_Understanding_431

They are really strong and difficult to break apart.

I tried to see if my phone would float around like that.

coldest_hands

Can anyone explain how those metal things where floating? Was it because the alternate row of magnets were of opposite polarity?

Magneticitist

Probably graphene, highly diamagnetic. Others have made the little graphene 'sails' travel along track-like paths by using particular field orientations.
