Definitely a Joker inflation. And I don't want to see yet another Joker in the new DCU. But Dafoe as Joker vs Phoenix would be absolutely perfect. And it works for the Joker movies in their standalone universe.
But they don't need to rehash it. They don't even need to cast someone. Just have the Joker exist and be in prison. DC is way too dependent on the Joker in Batman stories. DCU Batman should focus on other villains. If they really want to do Under the Red Hood they can bring in the Joker. But not everything needs to revolve around him.
I mean if you're a studio head and Willam Defoe says he wants to be in the sequel to a movie that made a billion dollars, you probably *at least* consider it.

My canon was that since Phoenix was the "first" Joker to publicly reveal himself, he'd be the Clown, especially with the whole Clown Riots story but he could work as the Comedian too.

I do love Hamill's Joker. I was imagining it as someone way younger. Someone super annoying and over the top. Hamill could do that based on his trickster. But I also think Leto himself could work since he himself is an actual clown. Leto shows up, is the worst, thinks he's hot shit, gets killed almost immediately.
Oddly he sounds a tiny bit older than Hamill's Joker. Not much, it's brilliant work, but Baker's voice is slightly darker and lower than Hamill's in the role.
Dafoe’s idea sounds way better than just The Three Jokers. He wanted to play an imposter who takes the mantle while Fleck is in Arkham.

If we get a third film to round out the trilogy, this should be the way to do it. I at first thought the sequel could bring in Harvey Dent already as Two-Face that would create a turf war that would basically conclude in a third film, but with the sequel the way it seems…introducing another anarchist would still be the way to end the trilogy, possibly in a very bloody, climatic finale. Maybe Harley even has to make the decision to kill Arthur.

Casting Dafoe in a motion capture based Batman game (like Death Stranding or God of War: Ragnarok) would work so absurdly well... No one has to worry much about him being too old since the game devs can easily do some touch ups

There are so many different ways Joker can be done that isn't too on the nose, some will be great, some will miss, but left to the fans we would have a 1 to 1 comic book conversion with no quirky or interesting picks for character roles, 'Oh this guy looks like x, y, z, cast him'.
