Are people under 16 eligible yet?

Quezare

Yes, 12-15 year olds are also eligible (at least in Victoria and NSW, unsure about other states but I think they’re eligible there too). Naturally they’re the most recent addition but the uptake in that age group has been extremely strong so far!

ZelaWk

Yes. It’s Australia-wide for 12-15 year olds.

acllive

Australia wide for 12+ get on the vaccine and back on the beers

Own-Negotiation4372

Under 18s can get on the choccy milk

acllive

That’s just the tradies smoko

eric987235

I’m happy to hear it! Hopefully I can visit Australia again some day; it’s been my favorite trip so far.

Viewfromthe31stfloor

Go Australia! 🇦🇺

Savo3333

It must be nice living in a medically literate society that generally supports public health!

space_monster

Depends where you are. Canberra, where a lot of government workers live, is about 99% vaccinated. Some of the country areas are under 50%. Sydney, which you might expect to be full of smart, sciency people actually has a large cohort of tin foil hat wearing anti-establishment wannabe 'free citizens' who think the vaccine is a plot to kill everyone.

thewavefixation

Large cohort? Sydney is on track for 90%+ of eligible people. We already have 92% first dosed. We will hit that number by 11 november. In other words - you don’t know what you are talking about.

space_monster

it's not gonna hit 99% though, is it. and why would that be.

thewavefixation

We have over 6 million people living here. A LOT of immigrants. The ACT has less than half a million - almost all college educated. Sydney will likely end up as the most vaccinated major city in the world. Stop making up silly stories.

summertimeaccountoz

Also, what else is there to do in the ACT?

sroasa

It's not Karens that are the anti-vaxxers in Australia. It's the new age, organic food, crystals heal types. The people that wont trust big pharma but are all in on big bullshit.

space_monster

yeah I lump them in with the Karens.

WCRugger

Probably won't. But considering our state wide vaccination average has historically been 96% that's still pretty bloody good.

space_monster

I agree, and I hope I'm wrong.

acllive

The tinfoil hat type make up about 2% of Australians if they are lucky 😂

sroasa

I suspect that more people wont get the vaccine because they are terrified of needles than wont get it because they're anti-vaxxers.

WCRugger

Yeah, I suspect a fear of needles is the reason a number of the last holdouts at my workplace have avoided it so far. Whenever it comes up they make a big deal about the actual act more so than the conspiracy side of it. The others are the crazies.

space_monster

current estimates are ~10% of the population is 'vaccine hesitant'. it is dropping though

Eurovision2006

What's the number including partially vaccinated?

sroasa

Single dosed over 16 is at 85%

PossitiveEyeOn

Meanwhile in the US we are stuck at 57%. Mind you, the US has had access to the vaccine longer too. (Face palm)

garfe

We're very close 70% of 18+ fully vaccinated (68.6%), which is the comparison to this headline of 16+. What are you looking at? ~~EDIT: Okay why did I get downvoted for this?~~

blablahblah

For the apples-to-apples comparison, the [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/australia-covid-cases.html) is reporting that 57% of the whole Australian population is fully vaccinated, so about the same as the US.

ZelaWk

Yes. Australia is 57.4% of the whole population. US is 57.5% of the whole population.

sroasa

The difference is the US was at 50% vaccinated at the start of august and Australia was at 16%.

ZelaWk

Yes. And we are still vaccinating at a pretty good rate.

AnOnlineHandle

Although the US would also have high immunity from the massive outbreaks whereas Australia's unvaccinated are completely unprotected.

acllive

Will probably beat them this week due to population sizes but also 10% of Victoria will be vaccinated this week

Skipper12

Because people don't like when a negative comment about the states isn't right.

makmillion

Meanwhile, everything else in Australia continues to try and kill off the human population.

disconnectmenow

Yes maybe that's why we are not worried about a little needle.

SecondRain123

You're wrong. 'No Jab No Pay' is not a newly introduced plan. It was introduced in 2015 and it doesn't block you from all welfare payments. And it doesn't include Covid-19 at all. Children under 12 can't even get Covid vaccine yet anyway. So far, Covid-19 vaccine has been introduced for certain workplaces, like most countries, but it doesn't block you from getting welfare. I'm so fucking sick of the constant push of misinformation about Australia on the website from Americans who don't know anything. There's plenty of things to criticise Australian politicians over but you guys never manage to get it right FFS

0ldgrumpy1

No, the covid misinformation you are being fed is a tool for control. Mentally unstable people gobble it up and hurt themselves, their families and their communities. You should stop.

What does a logical fallacy have to do with this article?

Stumpy_Lump

The slippery slope is not always a fallacy

Darkly-Dexter

Is here

LetsBeNice2020

the government already mandates car seats for kids, seat belts for adults… dude in my city i can’t ride one of those electric scooters on the sidewalk anymore. there is no slippery slope argument here because we’ve already crossed that line. it doesn’t matter if the govt mandates the vaccine or not, they already mandate thousands of things.

space_monster

?? For the vast majority of people, getting vaccinated is totally optional. Where are you getting your information from?

happy_dick_punch

Australians don’t really have a choice

space_monster

I live in Australia. and I'm telling you we do have a choice.

happy_dick_punch

If they don’t get it, they are ticketed or arrested, correct?

Darkly-Dexter

The fuck are you talking about

space_monster

what fucking universe are you living in?

happy_dick_punch

Nice answer

WCRugger

Let me guess. You're American.

nyamatongwe

No.

happy_dick_punch

>And now Australia's government, which is conservative, has introduced a new plan called “No Jab, No Pay.” It means that if you don't vaccinate you don't get any government welfare benefits. It's a controversial plan. Almost 40,000 Australian children under seven have not been vaccinated because their parents refuse. That means a lot of families will lose their payments. [https://www.pri.org/stories/australia-imposes-penalties-anti-vaxxers](https://www.pri.org/stories/australia-imposes-penalties-anti-vaxxers) **Australia imposes penalties on anti-vaxxers**

space_monster

that's not for covid, you idiot. that's for childhood vaccinations against measles, mumps, rubella etc.

happy_dick_punch

So the covid vaccine isn’t really a vaccine. Otherwise it would be grouped into these.

space_monster

wow. you really are full-on sunshine bus, aren't you.

ZelaWk

Maybe, just maybe, you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Just a hunch.

[deleted]

ZelaWk

There are ZERO people being arrested in Australia for not getting the vaccine. You may want to reconsider your sources of information.

Darkly-Dexter

Lay off tik tok

happy_dick_punch

That’s not an explanation

Darkly-Dexter

There are no people

sroasa

I don't know what you're all arguing about. Australia isn't real. Just like birds.

latenightloopi

Yes we did. There are plenty of folk who have chosen no jab. Some of them have to change jobs but that is also their choice. For the time being, in some places, there are extra freedoms for the fully vaccinated but only for a few weeks. Those who have chosen not to get vaccinated can still access essential things like grocery shopping and medical care. They just can’t go to the pub for a few more weeks. Edited to add: and in several states there are currently very few health restrictions and life is almost…. normal.

space_monster

Yeah I moved to the sunshine coast in June, it's been BAU up here, apart from a 10-day snap lockdown a couple of months back. People are generally good about wearing masks though.

WCRugger

They did that several years back. It's not something they introduced for the pandemic. And its something most people here have no issue with.

awakenedstream

once they hit 80% they are gonna lockdown even tighter.

0ldgrumpy1

The stupidity of that comment is mind boggling. Did you forget the /s? A lot of restrictions were lifted at 70% already.

awakenedstream

Agreed that the idea of that is stupid, in many places that is what has transpired though.

0ldgrumpy1

No it hasn't.

awakenedstream

In my county it has. Vaccination rates went up, mask ordinances got stricter.

0ldgrumpy1

No it didn't.

awakenedstream

Ah I see the game we are playing here.

0ldgrumpy1

Yep, you lie, I call you out. You move the goal posts and lie again, i call you out.

awakenedstream

Doesn’t seem to be it at all. Contra Costa County had the vaccination rate going up at the time it tightened restrictions. It did happen. I am sure there are other places it happened too. If you cared about what was true you probably would have asked where I was coming from on this. I have no reason to lie.

0ldgrumpy1

You claimed originally that once vaccination rates reached a level that resulted in deaths dropping would result in lockdowns increasing. This was false. You also said you knew of cases where this happened, but your next post moved the goal posts to mask mandates increasing. Again, once vaccination rates became high enough here to have an effect on cases mask rules were relaxed, so again you were wrong. Perhaps when vaccination rates were low, mask mandates might have increased safety, but your exact statement was that lockdowns ( and mask mandates) would go up over here when vaccination rates went up was completely ( and deliberately) wrong. The "road map" is already released and the first stages of relaxations have already happened.

KESPAA

Nah

ZelaWk

Yeah nah
