I’ve eaten so many tomato sandwiches and cherry tomatoes. I stewed some, gave some away, have some in a bowl on my counter and a few left on the vines! Definitely going to grow purple Cherokee and sun dippers again!
One of the nicer parts of living in California - tomato season starts early and ends late 😍
I’ve been making killer romesco sauce every couple weeks because why wouldn’t you? I don’t want to think about not having good romesco or having to make it from canned tomatoes (even though that is still serviceable).
But then we also get persimmons, pomegranates, awesome turnips, etc… CA is amazing when it comes to our produce seasons.
My in-laws are too old to pick their fruit trees and no one else wants to do it. I go up and pick for them and they send me home with a pretty good share of what I pick. My mom offered to can it, so my share ended up being 12 quarts each of peaches and applesauce, a couple peach pies, and a lot of fresh fruit.
From around May to August. The two most popular are Hayden and Pirie. The latter is my favorite because it’s incredibly sweet and juicy with an extremely rich mango flavor.
Omg best unexpected but elegant and simple fall side dish is butter sauteed onions and honey crisp apple slices with a touch of sage... Excellent with any sausage and kale or roasted butternut bisque. Cannot wait!
New York state apple season is the best: maybe 50 varieties available in the farmer's markets? Oh yeah, that's the 300 year old breed French apple that's the original tarte tatin apple, and that's the one out of Cornell's apple farm last year that's going to replace the honeycrisp (as if)?
Seasonal produce to look forward to now:
Squashes: I love the new winter squashes bred at Cornell: Robin's Koginut is super tasty, if you can get some at your farmer's market, as are the cute little baby butternut squashes called honeynut squash.
Parsnips: an earthier cousin of carrots: great for soups, as roasted vegetables.
Celeriac: A lovely root veg, great in soup, as mash side for meats, etc.
They are my absolute favorite. I went to a farmstand yesterday and got 10. Most will go into soup. Any extra will be roasted and eaten as is or over risotto. I wouldn't be surprised if I got more by the end of season.
I'm excited for baking season! Summer is too hot to use the oven but as soon as it starts to cool down I'm all about that life. Cookies, breads, quick breads, cakes and of course all those delicious roast dinners. I'm still working on perfecting my roast beef, can never seem to get the timing quite right.
Any specific things you’re planning on doing with those apples??
I love all food seasons. Citrus season is a fun one that feels like a nice moment in the winter. Obsessed with pro blanco grapefruit, pomelo, blood oranges. I often make preserved lemons for the year at that time too.
Tomato season. Stone fruit season. Early spring with pea shoots, favas, green garlic, and asparagus.
Sounds yummy!
Sure it is exciting. Not only to make recipes for the in-season food that I might not always make, but to buy that ingredient at a cheaper price. Also, the food tends to be yummier in-season than out-of-season. Sometimes also only available in-season.
6 different types of tomatoes here and I dunno what they have been seeing out back but their cheeks are starting to turn red...
I have the mayo and bread ready, just waiting on them :D
Apples are definitely my favorite! I live in an area with a lot of apple orchards, so I can usually get them pretty cheap at roadside stands.
My second favorite is strawberry season. Yummy.
Bonito and mackerel season. Can't beat good, fresh blue fish: grilled steaks, marmitako, diced and wok fried with roasted red peppers, cooked in escabeche...
Absolutely. I always hate to see tomato season go. But it’s that time.
Yep. Tomatoes. Also when the first stone fruits come in--plums, nectarines, apricots.... Oh, and the very first, incredibly sweet strawberries!

Have you made any pasta sauce? I love smitten kitchens naked tomato sauce, and it freezes so well.

Mango season here in Hawaii is amazing. Everyone goes crazy over it.
Mmmm, when is mango season just so I know exactly when to visit?

Peel and freeze the Haralsons for baking, they make the best pie
I’ve never heard of that variety but I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for them now!
Apple season is my favourite. Picking is fun, the Apples last so long, and you get to make a delicious pie in time for thanksgiving.
Empress Plums are in season in my area now! I look forward to them every year.
Asparagus and Chanterelles, mostly.

We’re coming into summer in Australia, I can’t wait for mangos, peaches, decent strawberries- the list goes on
For me, it’s okra. I have a few pints right now that I got from a local farm here and it’s the best.
FIGS and CHERRIES!!! And also any and all stone fruit… I’m going to miss you summer… 😘
Tacos!!!
Almost. I'm allergic to uncooked apples and I don't like them cooked. I miss apple season so much. So much.
Do you like pears? I'm waiting not patiently for them to go on sale so I can make jam.

As an Oregonian it's crab season for me!
After 3 months of winter fruits in Australia, I'm really looking forward for the peaches, plums and cherries in the summer.
As someone who is newly allergic to apples, this post hurts my heart. Also, get yourself a Cosmic Crisp!!!
The first cherries of the season are my favorite.

Pumpkin. No clue why. The fall comes around and I'll be adding pumpkin to anything. 😂

I have a calendar reminder for pomegranate season, they’re so good
i buy absurd amounts of persimmons in the winter because their season is so short
YES!!! Apples, sweet potatoes, persimmons, Asian pears... fall seasonal fruits&veg are my favorite :3
