If those missiles don’t know where they’re going does that mean they’re rockets now?

juanpuente

Since rockets are guided by Allah do they become missiles?

mental_midgetry

The power of prayer

angusfred123

robot lords of tokyo, smile! taste kittens!

ImThatTrip

No, Missilems.

The_orangeWanker

Missilems?

ecant004

I'd guess it's a cross between the words missile and Muslim.

The_orangeWanker

Oh ok

[deleted]

Jesus is taking the wheel, we had the Holy hand grenade, get ready for the Holy guided missile.

SchlepRock13

Nice!

UncleFreshness

No, since the primary difference between the two is that rockets use solid fuel propellant and missiles generally are powered by rocket/missile engines. Both can be guided. Missiles are strictly guided while rockets are only *sometimes* guided.

Swingfire

This is some galaxy brain take

cuzitsthere

Super close, however the fuel type doesn't matter. All missiles are rockets but not all rockets are missiles, and missiles require *on-board* guidance as opposed to rockets that can have "ground-based guidance" which... I don't personally consider guidance so much as, I don't know... Aim?

UncleFreshness

Where is this coming from exactly? Rockets are very diverse in guidance systems that aren’t strictly ground based. I assume you’re referring to inputting a rocket with guidance before it goes in the air, but that still wouldn’t cover the whole family of rockets that come equipped with In-Flight trajectory correction. Plenty have tail driven guidance or gps guidance. The difference between the two doesn’t really lie in any one characteristic, but in what some consider practicality.

cuzitsthere

The lines are definitely blurring these days, but GPS isn't "on-board" guidance and I'm not sure if by "tail-driven" you mean TOW or course correction fins but one is Ground-based guidance and the other isn't really the point, lots of stuff can steer lol. By "on-board" I'm referring to IR seeking or KA band radar on the missile itself, "fire-and-forget" stuff that finds it's own target or avoids obstacles itself. Early model cruise missiles definitely muddied the water because you had to input the terrain map and flight path before firing, but nowadays you just tell it "you are here, fly at this altitude and go kill that" and it avoids terrain on its own... Much more becoming of the nomenclature, sheisty little bastards. This is coming from 7 years Air and Missile Defense experience. I miss talking about this stuff, honestly...

UncleFreshness

> the lines are definitely blurring these days Too true. There isn’t much unique to missiles in the past 2- decades since rockets are following into the 21st century with most of the qualities you’d used to find exclusively in missiles. However, GPS and on-board guidance with rockets still would put it in the same category as missiles. Rockets can seek moving targets, and they can be redirected in-flight. On-board computers that find targets exist on rockets just the same as missiles. Like I said, both can be guided depending on its platform. rockets are as dumb as a propelled grenade, and as smart as a unitary missile.

cuzitsthere

Swinging the other way, we have other dumbass names like "SCUD Missile" and TBM, because if we put "ballistic" in the name we can ignore that they're pretty much a trashcan of propellant hurling a pointy trashcan of explosives at a grid square it might hit... "Missile" indeed. Anywho, at their core, neither name has an "official" definition at all. The U.S. military says a missile has on-board guidance, except for these 900 things that don't but still get the name, and a rocket refers only to the engine that uses a directional explosion at the ass end of something to propel it forward... That way we can keep giving NASA rockets with people strapped inside them and we can avoid calling satellites "missiles" even if they have on-board or GPS guidance.

HessuCS

Holy shit, that's crazy

JoshuaZissou

Some poor bastard 10 miles away is probably trying to tend his crops while tactical missiles rain down on him

ddescartes0014

That guy just became a junk metal trader instead.

A lead farmer, if you will.

MorteEtDabo

Sinan_reis

crops? in yemen? those rockets are probably more rain than they get in a decade

N3ero

>crops? in yemen? those rockets are probably more rain than they get in a decade From what I know, Yemen is the most fertile region in the Arabian peninsula. I could be wrong though.

clitoral_obligations

Banks of the Euphrates I believe

Boredog

No Euphrates in Yemen.

HowObvious

They're saying the Euphrates is the most fertile region in the Arabian peninsula not that its in Yemen....

clitoral_obligations

Name checks out

N3ero

Banks of the Euphrates is in Mesopotamia (Modern day Iraq). The Arabian peninsula is generally known to include Saudi, the Gulf countries and Yemen

HowObvious

Southern Iraq is often included in the Arabian peninsula. > Geographically, the Arabian Peninsula includes Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen, as well as the southern portions of Iraq and Jordan.[8] T https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabian_Peninsula

AveryAlmintoser

There is a shit ton of rain in Yemen. It’s the most fertile country in the peninsula.

Sinan_reis

there might be more than saudis get but the entire area doesn't get much `"The Climate of Yemen can be described as subtropical dry, hot desert climate with low annual rainfall, very high temperatures in summer and a big difference between maximum and minimum temperatures, especially in the inland areas. Summer (June to September) is very low rainfall.` `Climate of the World: Yemen | woeurope.eu"`

AveryAlmintoser

Well this is Sanaa and Sanaa is in the north with the majority of the population. The north gets about 20 to 30 inches of rain. [source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Yemen#Climate)

converter-bot

30 inches is 76.2 cm

AveryAlmintoser

Although The south doesn’t hit shit in rain

Ricksauce

greenknight

Not a whole lot of crop agriculture, though not zero either. More likely he is pastorally herding his heritage breed goats.

JoshuaZissou

Jokes are way funnier if you don’t take them seriously.

greenknight

I might not have combat experience, but I know my subsistence agriculture. Still funny yo!

getsumchocha

i just had crazy deja vu reading this lol. just thought id share

JoshuaZissou

Farmer in Yemen?

ham006

I believe this happened at Jabal Nagoom, Mount Nagoom. One of the highest points surrounding the Capitol Sanaa. The last time I was there, a large military base was located on that mountain. It was well know that the whole area Had all types of shit. It belonged to the past regime. There’s another video with a missile depot that got hit (on the other side of that mountain) and looks like a nuke went off. He’s yelling at other people to run downstairs.

Lord_Voltan

The last one you mentioned, one of the videos of it has a bunch of crazies adamantly defending that it WAS a tactical nuke.

ham006

I’m not a crazy, but anything is possible. There have been cases of infants being born deformed during the war from so called “nuclear warfare”. But, Yemen already has a bunch of issues that can cause birth defects. There are non Yemeni individuals with weapons knowledge who have stated that the explosion was similar to the explosions of tactical nukes. But because those individuals are not credible, I cannot say it’s true. Whatever the case, it was a large, strong, powerful, deadly and damaging explosion.

i_give_you_gum

Something that's rarely talked about is the use of depleted uranium in warzones, which I believe A-10s and some tanks fire (and who knows what else), when they hit they have pyrophoric properties, which means that some of the metal become gaseous, and then you have aerosolized irradiated material floating around. I've been somewhat surprised that we haven't heard of more reports of that coming out of Iraq, but at the same time I'm not surprised.

WhitePantherXP

I cannot find that video anywhere, do you have a link?

CaptainAssPlunderer

I can’t find it either, but when it went off it looked like the massive Beruit explosion. I could see how someone thought it was a tac nuke going off, it was a big big boom. If I remember right it wasn’t explosives going off but tons of rocket fuel going off all at once.

Vertigofrost

Do you have a link to that other video?

Ibboibboibbo

It’s unlikely you’d be hit I guess but I wouldn’t be outside filming tho glad he did!

d00m_sayer

Ironically, the cameraman is cursing at somebody for being outside at the end of the footage.

Jetorix

I was wondering what he was saying, thanks

Ibboibboibbo

Me too! Pesky kids trying to play outside when random missiles are flying around.

AveryAlmintoser

He was saying go downstairs.

IMNOVIRGIN

I can imagine the person in charge of BDA would have not been happy trying to figure out how much external damage was caused...

Is this alternate MV of fireworks by katty Perry??

Merkel4Lyfe

That's oddly beautiful. What an interesting sound. We build some crazy things.

ffilps

wtf? are they using fuse chords?

rubbarz

Kinda just sped up their process a bit.

liquidacquaintance

Almost seems like the exact thing you were trying to avoid.

Kinda like bombing rebel-held stores of chemical weapons and blaming the regime for gassing their own people when the only victims had acute effects.

TurtleChickenFart

It's... beautiful. (ಥ _ʖಥ)

tompetreshere

This would be pretty sweet if used in the correct context within a crazy action movie!

roymf

What's the best way to take out a missile/rocket depot without any collateral damage? Imagine it's in the middle of a city for example.

Crunkbutter

Karate chop all the guards and defuse the missiles

SleeplessinOslo

Do missiles actually work like that? Seems more like fireworks / IED factory

Numbah_Wan

They actually do. A similar incident occured in Pakistan in 1980s, when KGB backed Afghan saboteurs sabotaged really rockets and missiles meant for Mujahideen. Many people were killed when missiles rained down upon their houses that day.

SleeplessinOslo

TIL!

UltraLethalKatze

While I do not know the history of this video but perhaps it was fireworks but I kinda doubt it by the look of it. They appear to be missiles due to their sheer speed and lack of any flashy firework affects.

hairybollicks

Next time stack missiles pointing towards enemy... ..taps forehead

FlyingDragoon

That way we always come out on top.

Reminds me of 4th of July when someone accidentally burned a stash of bottle rockets.

zaneclo69

Reminds me of he time we did QRF for ODA for one of their mraps caught on fire and when we showed up the .50 cal rounds were exploding and shooting off and they just left.

FlyingDragoon

Sounds like the Battle of Hoth.

NoorJehan2

Woaaah

Cdub614

I’ve always wondered if those munitions are actually shooting somewhere or do they just burn up?

FlyingDragoon

I can't tell if they're blowing up after impact, cause there's just a ton of pops and explosions, but the ones that fly at the mountain behind them look like they're just slamming into the mountain like a big bullet sans explosion. I'd like to know as well. I do know that there have been stories of bombs... And nukes... Falling from airplanes/crashing with airplane but because they weren't armed they didn't blow up. So maybe it's like that? Unless these aren't the kind you arm first.

CaptainAssPlunderer

Just a guess here, but it’s possible that the warhead part of the rocket would have to be armed for it to explode(kinda like taking the safety off a gun to shoot it). So instead of it falling in the middle of your field and blowing up, it’s now sitting there.....possibly ready to blow up when you have to move it out of the way.

Welp, there goes all the COVID relief money!

Augustus_Cornelius

if anything, Saudi are paying for your COVID relief. There was a report of how Saudi and UAE buy US equipment for 10x more.
