Reminds me of the time FedEx took out a full-page ad in USA Today congratulating Ken Jennings on his 74-game streak after he lost game 75 by incorrectly guessing "What is FedEx?" for Final Jeopardy.
Luckily, we don't play until Saturday so we'll be #1 longer this time! We were only #1 for like 3 days really last time... I wonder if Virginia wins they could leapfrog us since it was so close?
surviving this week without getting knocked off by Davidson will do wonders for me in therapy post-this game. I’m ready to move past it guys, just one win
My dad is over 60 and had never been to a Purdue game in Mackey. I took him last year for the first time, and it was the game against Wisconsin where Johnny Davis sonned us. Lol.
[Matt Charboneau](https://collegepolltracker.com/basketball/pollster/matt-charboneau/2022/week-6)
Not the craziest poll I’ve ever seen (shoutout to some of the ones from like 2 weeks ago) but Tennessee at 1, Virginia at 7, and 3-loss Saint Mary’s at 20 are certainly choices…
There's a few who did this. Were you guys missing any players when we played y'all? Trying to rationalize it. Maybe just a road win vs #1 is more valuable than a neutral loss to them.
Edey shoots his first 3 pt shot all season long in the finals because the scouting report said Uconn doesn't have to guard him from the arc since Painter doesn't let him take shots out there. The biggest long con coming in clutch in the biggest game of Purdue history from the biggest man in Purdue history revealing all along that Edey was and is a 60% 3pt shooter.
Same here, put 100 on it to profit 625. Apparently that wasn’t enough because I still felt like complete shit after. I didn’t sports bet for like 4 months because of that bet. Every time I opened my account I just saw that money and got sad.
The Wisconsin "projected to finish 9th in the B1G" Badgers are now ranked before the conference schedule really gets started. I was honestly hoping we wouldn't catch a ranking, we always tend to play worse when expectations are higher.
“But who left on this Wisconsin team can score after Jordan Taylor, Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker, Bronson Koenig, Nigel Hayes, Ethan Happ, D’Mitrik Trice, Johnny Davis, Brad Davison are gone?”
Maybe basketball is not just about scoring and recruiting stars…
I mean I get why people thought we'd be mediocre, we lost our two most important players, one of which carried our offense last year and was the \#10 pick. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable
Its hilarious how hard of a time both the media and our fans have accepting we are good good. "Program with 2nd most Big Ten Championships (6) this millennia is scrappy underdog." (MSU 8, Illinois 5, Ohio State 5)
Someone ask the media, are we better than 9th in the big ten yet?
How about all the guys who had us not in their tournament bracket despite missing only one tournament since 2000? It has to be a running joke every offseason for them
Is what it is, VT just doesn't have the brand appeal to garner votes in these types of polls. I'd say in a blind resume we beat out UMD, Ohio State, Auburn, and TCU...and as someone who has watched all of those teams this year I'd think VT would be favored in those games on a neutral site. But that's just how it goes for VT hoops
UMD is actually the other team I follow closely (graduate, and live in the area) so I've watched all their games. Very excited to see them take such a huge step but I think they're a team VT would match up really well against. But they're definitely in the same ballpark as VT....somewhere between the 15th and 35th best team in the country
Seeing a lot of discourse between UVA and UConn fans and it’s all dumb. UVA plays Houston on Saturday, which will determine if UVA deserves to be in the top 3 or not, so everyone needs to relax lol.
If we could just keep Purdue, UConn, and UVA in the top 3 for the rest of the season, no matter who is where in that 3, I’d be thrilled.
This was the latest the AP Poll has like ever come out, they were trolling us! Also, we need a Edey Clingan matchup at some point, the people deserve to see those two giants play on the court at the same time!
[Live look at that matchup](https://s3.superluchas.com/wp-content/uploads/20190321033037/el-ring-se-desploma-tras-el-superplex-de-mark-henry-a-the-big-show-jaidefinichondotcom.gif)
I don't think it will last long with how brutal away games in the big ten are looking.
I'll be pleased with being in the top 10 at the end of the season.
Most importantly, hoping for the Big Ten's handling of it's play to look like it's playing the same sport as the rest of the country going into March.
i didn't want to be the one to say it, but yea. if you guys can keep gillis healthy once he returns and/or improve your 3p% elsewhere, you'll be unstoppable
This is the first time since week 16 of the 2006 season that the Alabama basketball team has been ranked higher in the AP poll than the football team.
WE’RE A BASKETBALL SCHOOL NOW ROLL TIDE!!!
Obviously they had a lot farther to go, but I am a little surprised Purdue passed us while UConn didn’t seeing as the Huskies had the far more impressive week.
End of the day doesn’t matter a whole lot, I’ll take a Top 5 matchup at JPJ on Saturday.
Virgina did it in 2017/18. But they didn't make it to #1 until Week 15, February 12th.
Edit: Adding a reminder that Virgina lost to a #16 seed UMBC that year. :D
Source: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318\_NCAA\_Division\_I\_men%27s\_basketball\_rankings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_rankings)
Kinda seems like our game against Indiana didn't even happen lol. We move up one and they don't drop at all. Not that I don't think those spots are pretty accurate for both teams, just kinda funny given how reactionary the AP poll often is.
Also, what the hell does the MWC need to do to get some love? I can understand not thinking they should all be ranked, but for fucks sake, UNLV, USU, and UNM are *all* undefeated and even if you **combined** their votes, they wouldn't have enough to get ranked. In fact, you could ***double*** the sum of their votes and they wouldn't be ranked. Just ridiculous...
Arkansas doesn't have a top 25 win currently. The teams above us do. Easy math.
Edit: except for houston. But their single loss is to a top 10 team. Arkansas' single loss is to an unranked Creighton. Math still checks out.
UConn being #3 is fine, it's tough to complain too hard when the polls are so close...
...however, if we are going to point out something to whine about, Jon Wilner and Justin Jackson having Alabama #3 and UConn #5 is pretty ridiculous. Credit to Alabama for being really good lately but c'mon now.
this happened to purdue a few weeks ago, after they beat gonzaga and duke
couple pollsters still had purdue in the 20 range and gonzaga and duke in like the 8-14 range.
some of these voters......
Tommy just cannot get a "good" midseason tournament win apparently. Last year we beat #4 Michigan and they fell off a cliff and this year we beat a ranked SDSU and Creighton and now they are both unranked.
Congrats Purdue fans. Very deserving team. It is always cool to see your team at number 1. Great exposure on other game broadcasts, goes in the history books, etc.
Happy IU managed to stay at 14, scared as hell of Purdue at #1. They’re legit this year, and I hate the risk of losing the “we’ve got banners and you don’t” argument.
Poll Inertia The Gap Between #1 Houston and #4 Purdue last Week (91) was bigger than the Gap between #4 Purdue and #5 Uconn (116)
Purdue Jumped Virginia but their was only 5 points separation from last week.
Yeah, people seem to forget the AP poll is about momentum more than who is actually playing the best in the moment. For teams to get jumped when they continue to win it takes them looking absolutely terrible doing it and/or the teams behind them getting huge wins over ranked teams. UConn is probably the best team in the country right now, but the Alabama win was weeks ago while the Florida and LIU wins weren't particularly anything unexpected hence the lack of a #1 ranking.
That's about it. UConn has been far more dominant overall this season. If you think Virginia is as lucky as kenpom, you should be confident this will sort itself out over the next month.
Virginia is ahead of 2018 Xavier in the luck department, and 2018 Xavier is my gold standard for lucky seasons for top-25 teams.
Ok who put Mississippi Valley State by accident instead of Mississippi State?
[Also definitely meant to rank Mississippi State NOT Mississippi Valley State. Must’ve clicked on the wrong one. I submitted pretty late last night after the craziness that was Wisconsin-Iowa. My bad. Imagine it says Mississippi State.](https://twitter.com/AbbySchnable/status/1602357772305272839)
I like that she owned it, but omg why are people on twitter so awful. All the responses are "you suck"
14 year olds
You underestimate how childish adults can be
Yeah as much as I wish that the probablem with Twitter is that it's a bunch of teenagers... It's unfortunately not that simple
[gotta respect the loyalty and blind homerism in this response 😂](https://twitter.com/MVSUFanatics/status/1602361115316748288?t=NdVG-agj-hg-HotyiOunBg&s=19)
I don't think it was blind homerism, more just leveraging a mistake for your own gain, since they knew it was an accident.
Reminds me of the time FedEx took out a full-page ad in USA Today congratulating Ken Jennings on his 74-game streak after he lost game 75 by incorrectly guessing "What is FedEx?" for Final Jeopardy.
That's great We gotta all pitch in and elevate state guys
She ain't SWAC
She meant to vote for Houston Baptist.
*Looks in corner for Rutgers hiding in the shadows.
They’re just standing there… *menacingly*
SICKO reported
ALRIGHT, let’s not fuck it up this time Boilers
No trapezoid of terror this year 🙌
Lucky
I'd say we paid our dues haha
SO DID EVERYONE ELSE
[ *Vietnam flashbacks of Rutgers' half-court game winning bucket*](https://youtu.be/nTE3isW0kJw&t=45s)
We don't play them *checks notes* For 3 weeks
And at Mackey LEO
It would have cost you $0 not to post this
Luckily, we don't play until Saturday so we'll be #1 longer this time! We were only #1 for like 3 days really last time... I wonder if Virginia wins they could leapfrog us since it was so close?
This basket has been retroactively waved off after it was determined Rutgers stepped out of bounds
Why would you link this
surviving this week without getting knocked off by Davidson will do wonders for me in therapy post-this game. I’m ready to move past it guys, just one win
BO1LERS
Boilers(/Boilermakers) is also the GOAT mascot for swapping in numbers
801L3RM4K3R5
Congrats boilerbros. I'm a little upset we only get one game this year
I went to last year's game in Madison and bluntly, I am not haha (Your fans and city are rad as hell though)
*Red* as hell
My dad is over 60 and had never been to a Purdue game in Mackey. I took him last year for the first time, and it was the game against Wisconsin where Johnny Davis sonned us. Lol.
WE'RE IN THE PLAYOFF 4LABAMA
Alabama Basketball (#4) ranked higher than Alabama Football (#5) for the first time since 2006. Nick Saban's first year was 2007, 16 seasons ago.
Alabama's basketball coach was making more than the football coach in 2006. That's how crazy things were in Tuscaloosa before Saban came around.
That is actually insane
so when do we get to see Nate Oats in an Aflac commercial?
Everybody fixating on Purdue/UVA/UCONN but who gave Tennessee a #1 vote 🤨
[Matt Charboneau](https://collegepolltracker.com/basketball/pollster/matt-charboneau/2022/week-6) Not the craziest poll I’ve ever seen (shoutout to some of the ones from like 2 weeks ago) but Tennessee at 1, Virginia at 7, and 3-loss Saint Mary’s at 20 are certainly choices…
Well he has Bama ahead of UConn when they shellacked us in our one loss.
Quality Loss tho
There's a few who did this. Were you guys missing any players when we played y'all? Trying to rationalize it. Maybe just a road win vs #1 is more valuable than a neutral loss to them.
The answer is just that a lot of the voters don’t pay close attention to college basketball. They didn’t even know/remember that UConn beat Alabama.
Bama over UConn is also a special kind of choice
St. Mary’s is #20 in KenPom, they’ve beaten a ranked team, and their losses were all by 5 points or less to quality teams. Doesn’t seem that bad to me
Why does he have a bias with Tennessee? Edit: Memphis at 16!!
Someone who really likes defense and thinks offense is unnecessary probably
Ah yes a Denver Broncos truther
*Iowa football
Sounds like big ten football tbh
Usually that'd be UVA. Not so much this year
Funny how your football team is totally the opposite lol
If we combined them we’d either have the greatest sports team of all time or the worst
Is our game going to end in the 30’s?
TIL Kirk Ferentz is an AP voter
It's not too crazy of a vote Tennessee has been very good except for one game against CU. But it's CU
Preseason unranked team is now #1 Preseason #1 now unranked It's beautiful
pain
At least we beat GT… one day at a time
Let's also talk about how we had never been ranked #1 until last year, now back to back and getting carried BY FRESHMEN

https://i.imgur.com/PT9hbpI.gifv
Knew what it was before I clicked haha
Purdue never reached #1 in any AP poll until last year, now they've done it twice in two seasons. Wow
Looking at your flair, you’re having a good year
And will probably start the year next year inside the top 5, so I would wager they end up making it three years in a row.
Depends if edey stays
Surprised UConn didn't get it but I'll take it! BO1LER UP!
How about 2 undefeated seasons and #1 Purdue meets #2 UConn in the national championship game? Edey vs Sanogo/Clingan
I’ll take it
Where do I sign?
And since you guys already have 4 titles we go ahead and win a close game a last second shot. Everybody wins
10-0 & UNLV still not ranked smh
They just don’t like the MWC
Utah St, UNM & UNLV all undefeated & no love :(
Honestly I can understand USU and UNLV being unranked since neither has any wins that really stand out but UNM beat Saint Mary’s *on the road*
we beat #24 Dayton lol
I am going to take it as a sign of respect toward Arizona that Indiana loses *by 14* and doesn't drop at all.
Wish we moved up more though
Longest 30 minutes ever jfc but DOESNT MATTER HERE WE GO AGAIN BO1LERS I DO NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME I WILL CELEBRATE
Honestly fine with #3, don't want to start conference play with that big #1 target on our back
Especially since our next B1G game is Rutgers. Fuck.
Been there. It's not fun.
I would like to be the first to formally congratulate Davidson and Foster Loyer on their biggest win in program history
Fletcher to Foster loyer *softly* don't
Oh man, nows my chance to retire early with a money line bet on Davison
I don't know how long you've been a Purdue fan but..... NEVER bet for or against Purdue. It'll always go poorly.
I bet St. Peters ML against Purdue in the tournament as emotional insurance. If they're gonna break my heart, I won't let em do it for free.
Seriously, every year I see Wisconsin ranked that low I just laugh my ass off and then Greg Gard wins another COTY award.
“But who left on this Wisconsin team can score after Jordan Taylor, Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker, Bronson Koenig, Nigel Hayes, Ethan Happ, D’Mitrik Trice, Johnny Davis, Brad Davison are gone?” Maybe basketball is not just about scoring and recruiting stars…
Are we reeeally sure Brad Davison is gone though? Are you sure he doesn’t have 3 more years of eligibility left?
He just changed his name to Connor Essegian and worked on his 3-pt shot in the off-season.
I mean I get why people thought we'd be mediocre, we lost our two most important players, one of which carried our offense last year and was the \#10 pick. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable
Its hilarious how hard of a time both the media and our fans have accepting we are good good. "Program with 2nd most Big Ten Championships (6) this millennia is scrappy underdog." (MSU 8, Illinois 5, Ohio State 5)
Three Final Fours in that time period as well while missing just one tournament.
I support it because it just adds to Greg Gard being perrenial CotY candidate.
Someone ask the media, are we better than 9th in the big ten yet? How about all the guys who had us not in their tournament bracket despite missing only one tournament since 2000? It has to be a running joke every offseason for them
Bama Basketball > Bama Football, confirmed Also, UConn is getting hoe'd
I like you
🤝
Thinking about how if they make one more shot during the course of a 40 minute game against Charleston, VT is a top-15 team. Ah well.
I'm much more comfortable at 24.
Said one of your flairs to the other
Is what it is, VT just doesn't have the brand appeal to garner votes in these types of polls. I'd say in a blind resume we beat out UMD, Ohio State, Auburn, and TCU...and as someone who has watched all of those teams this year I'd think VT would be favored in those games on a neutral site. But that's just how it goes for VT hoops
In terms of a neutral court, I think you guys beat Auburn and TCU, OSU is a toss up and I think UMD handily wins But I’m higher on UMD than others
UMD is actually the other team I follow closely (graduate, and live in the area) so I've watched all their games. Very excited to see them take such a huge step but I think they're a team VT would match up really well against. But they're definitely in the same ballpark as VT....somewhere between the 15th and 35th best team in the country

Assuming Beekman plays
Who the hell gave Tennessee a 1st place vote? No team that shoots 50% free throws deserves a 1st place vote.
I love how this thread is basically UConn & UVA fans arguing about who should be higher and Tennessee fans going "nah we should be lower though"
Hey! (We shot 50% in our last game against JMU :(
Nothing to see here, just a rebuilding year
A late round rematch in the tourney this year would be lit.
I don't want to see you playing any of my teams in the tourney until Kihei finally graduates with his PhD or whatever he's on by now
Alright. Who voted for Mississippi Valley?
Lol someone accidentally voted for Mississippi Valley State
The Mountain West gets no love
This was the latest the AP Poll has like ever come out, they were trolling us! Also, we need a Edey Clingan matchup at some point, the people deserve to see those two giants play on the court at the same time!

Lmaooo
I don't want that. They would need to triple reinforce the floors because it would break every time they go up for a rebound
Hahaha. We need it! I know Dickinson vs Edey is close but Clingan is a bit bigger. Let’s make it happen.
Hope April 3rd next year works for y'all 🤝
**BO1LERMAKERS**
I’m mad about these rankings…. ….because Charleston should be ranked.
Ngl UConn probably deserves it more, but nonetheless *ahem* LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
nah we're rolling but our schedule didn't pan out. i think you guys keep it until you lose. not that i care. painter's earned it. choo choo!
I don't think it will last long with how brutal away games in the big ten are looking. I'll be pleased with being in the top 10 at the end of the season. Eagerly awaiting NCAAs this year when Purdue advances to Final Four beating UVA on an Edey buzzer beater.
This is the way.
UVA fans are the best
I hope we can cash in on last time
I’d love to see a Purdue make it all the way honestly. Of course, I’d rather my Hoos, but I’m rooting for your guys as well. Edey is a beast.
RANK CHARLESTON YOU COWARDS
Unbelievable they aren't ranked while the Hokies are.
Its because they lost to a scrub UNC team.
The pre-season #1 holding Charleston back from getting ranked.
If we go down, then we go down together 😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😭😭😭😭😭😭
How did Kansas drop two spots
Being on the same court with Mizzou drops you in the rankings, no matter the outcome
But I was assured scheduling Missouri would be mutually beneficial for both schools
“Shoulda beat Mizzou by more!” The two lowest voters on KU ranked Texas 8/9 spots ahead of KU.
KU went from 1,131 votes last week to 1,165 this week. They moved up, just poll dynamics around them.
[удалено]
Any idea what the record is for least amount of weeks to go from unranked to #1?
WOAHHHHH
This is the first time since week 16 of the 2006 season that the Alabama basketball team has been ranked higher in the AP poll than the football team. WE’RE A BASKETBALL SCHOOL NOW ROLL TIDE!!!
BO1LERS BACK TO BACK SEASONS LETS GO PLEASE DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID
Staying at 14. I’ll take it!
Obviously they had a lot farther to go, but I am a little surprised Purdue passed us while UConn didn’t seeing as the Huskies had the far more impressive week. End of the day doesn’t matter a whole lot, I’ll take a Top 5 matchup at JPJ on Saturday.
What's the fastest a team has gone from pre-season unranked to #1 in the AP Poll?
Virgina did it in 2017/18. But they didn't make it to #1 until Week 15, February 12th. Edit: Adding a reminder that Virgina lost to a #16 seed UMBC that year. :D Source: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318\_NCAA\_Division\_I\_men%27s\_basketball\_rankings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_rankings)
Honestly surprised seeing as we barely escaped Nebraska on Saturday, arguably thanks to the refs
Just shouted "Choo Choo bitches" at my work I'm so happy
BO1LERS
Thankyou for taking the #1 choo choo boys (you deserve it) but I’m sure this’ll keep the huskies hungry for the beginning of BE play
Kinda seems like our game against Indiana didn't even happen lol. We move up one and they don't drop at all. Win against a P6 team and we go down a spot? What?
we beat a community college and dropped two spots.
Lmfao love the trash talk
Arizona had a pretty big win over ranked Indiana
Arkansas doesn't have a top 25 win currently. The teams above us do. Easy math. Edit: except for houston. But their single loss is to a top 10 team. Arkansas' single loss is to an unranked Creighton. Math still checks out.
And a convincing one at that
I'll take it! #basketballschool
WOW, wasn’t expecting that
I think uconn more than passes the eye test, still a bit iffy on purdue, kinda like waiting for the shoe to drop
B10 away games will certainly take us out in no time
Please, Davidson. Don't do it.
Dodged a bullet before the Houston game
UConn being #3 is fine, it's tough to complain too hard when the polls are so close... ...however, if we are going to point out something to whine about, Jon Wilner and Justin Jackson having Alabama #3 and UConn #5 is pretty ridiculous. Credit to Alabama for being really good lately but c'mon now.

It's really confusing too, cause maui was all nothing but high level, tourney style basketball being played, just confusing
Congrats Purdue fans. Very deserving team. It is always cool to see your team at number 1. Great exposure on other game broadcasts, goes in the history books, etc.
HUSKI3S
A 4 spot drop??? I’ll take it… I’m guessing the Virginia game being a “Top 5” matchup also plays a role here
I dunno guys, I think we got snubbed
San Diego State getting more votes than New Mexico and Utah State is ridiculous
Happy IU managed to stay at 14, scared as hell of Purdue at #1. They’re legit this year, and I hate the risk of losing the “we’ve got banners and you don’t” argument.
I refreshed for 30 minutes for us to be not 1, not 2, but 3???
Poll Inertia The Gap Between #1 Houston and #4 Purdue last Week (91) was bigger than the Gap between #4 Purdue and #5 Uconn (116) Purdue Jumped Virginia but their was only 5 points separation from last week.

UConn is probably the best team in the country right now, but the Alabama win was weeks ago while the Florida and LIU wins weren't particularly anything unexpected hence the lack of a #1 ranking.
It's a tight spread though. You are 42 points behind number 1. Last week, number 3 was 86 points behind number 1.
Y'all being behind UVA is insane to me. I can understand if they wanted to put Purdue #1, but not even top 2? Ludicrous
I'm cool with 3. I feel like more pressure on #1. Just need to keep winning
What exactly has Virginia done to be ranked higher than UConn outside of being ranked higher at the start of the season?
That's about it. UConn has been far more dominant overall this season. If you think Virginia is as lucky as kenpom, you should be confident this will sort itself out over the next month. Virginia is ahead of 2018 Xavier in the luck department, and 2018 Xavier is my gold standard for lucky seasons for top-25 teams.
Obligatory KenPom luck is just the difference of what he can't explain via the expected results in his model and actual results.
I believe it also has a component of winning close games vs losing them. If you are constantly winning games within 5 points then your luck goes up.
2 ranked wins to UConn’s 1…and poll inertia lol
Someone voted for MVSU instead of Mississippi State
