It's not even *every* year. He does poorly for several years, until the AD threatens to fire him, and then he pulls an exceptional year out of his ass where we go undefeated in the ACC or make a sweet 16 or beat UNC at their place for the first time ever.
Then he gets a 10 year extension and coasts on it until they threaten to fire him again.
My goal was to see Clemson reach the NCAA tournament every 3-4 years. Since 2017, Brownell has delivered on this. For the first 7-8 years of his tenure, it was a constant disappointment.
Clemson is not going to be a basketball powerhouse, but I'd like to have years like this. I think we can succeed by having more senior teams every couple of years.
That’s pretty conservative imo. We made the tourney 10 times from 1980-2010. We have our limitations as a program, but our goal should be higher than program average
I'd love to see better. Got to Clemson in 2011 and saw a nice long basketball drought. Thats where my frame of reference is from.
I would love to see a Clemson team that made the tournament ever 2 years and have a couple of 2017/18 seasons where they get pretty far
Yeah that was a brutal period. I was a kid during the Purnell era, which was great by our standards. It’s been 15 years but I remember back when Littlejohn was considered one of the hardest places to play in the country. I really think we have the potential to be a consistent contender, and money isn’t an issue. Side note: your flairs are the only 2 schools I applied to!
The OPP era was great but we would always get blown out in the first round of the tournament. I showed up in 2009 and remember how crazy Littlejohn was for the Clemson-Duke College Gameday game that year (that we got blown out in)
I’m all in on our guys. Fluke or not if we can have a deep tournament run like 2018 I’ll be very happy. This team is on fire right now and is playing with a lot of heart
It’s probably SOS; a lot of our losses are against still-good teams, and so it hurts to lose because we could be much better in terms of ranking if not for a few possessions.
You're not wrong, fully expect us to finish right around .500 in conference, lose in the 2nd round of the ACCT to Louisville, and then bubble bust.our way to the NIT as a 2 seed to lose to Tulsa in the first round
Hall was great but Schieffelin was the most physical and annoying player on the court tonight and it helped so much. He’s developed so much already compared to last year.
I was on the front row near midcourt. Gave Greg Paulus an earful every single time he was at the scorer’s table. My buddy did the same with Singler. Easily a top 5 Littlejohn memory for me.
This makes me feel old! Do me a favor If you’re still at Clemson now - go to more basketball games! I attended in the golden age of football but I really ended up missing out on basketball.
Missed opportunity. Twice built an 8-point lead on the road but couldn’t hold on. Good job by Clemson, all credit to them.
Duke definitely playing better than a week ago, but this isn’t horseshoes or hand grenades. Have to stew on this for a week before we enter an even tougher stretch of the schedule.
Clemson fans, I'm sorry, but I think you guys are a tournament team this year. I know it's hard to hear but they're probably typing up an extension for Brownell right now.
Brownell isn't perfect, but it's been obvious that the vitriol toward him has never been about results. Clemson fans simply can't handle having someone that hot as their head coach.
With 5:30 left to play, Lively subbed in. For the next ~3 minutes Clemson only scored 2 more points.
Then Lively was subbed out for Young (??????), and Duke gave up 5 quick points while still failing to score because we kept trying to force Flip and Proctor.
Game over lol. So frustrating that the good things from Pitt didn't show up at all tonight
Lively needs to get in better shape. I really like Young, but he is not a plus defender and we won't win if he plays too many minutes.
Lively is nowhere near up to game speed on the college level, yet he still makes a massive impact on the game. He has lots of room to grow.
Overall, I was happy with the team today until the end. We are showing improvement, almost getting back to the level of play we showed with Roach.
We are not competing with past great Duke teams. We are just competing to get better every game and to fight for wins.
Unless Scheyer said something about it post game, I saw very little indication that Lively was gassed down the stretch. If anything, Young was the one that looked exhausted.
Lively is a rolling play finisher which makes him dependent on guard play, and I think this showed late in the game because Proctor was tired. Time will tell if they can mesh well enough, that pairing has had the most flashes so far.
There's some hate building in the comments for the court storming, but ignore that noise. This was the game that a lot of people said would bring clemson back to earth and you guys looked good and got a win where you were obviously the better team. You deserve the fun that comes with being the #1 team in the acc.
An argument could be made that in a few weeks Clemson being the number 1 team in the ACC standings, which is verifiably true, might not be true anymore. You could also say that Clemson, who we all agree is the number one team in the ACC standings, might continue to be the number one team. Really it’s anybody’s guess whether the number one team in the ACC standings, which of course is Clemson, stays the number one team in the standings.
Nobody knows how to make a basket. *One* total make from the floor in the last 8 minutes.
If I was Scheyer I would look at every single player in the locker room and tell them “None of you are future NBA players with what you’ve shown. Get your head out of your ass.”
Proctor seems like the only guy who can create, but he’s still young and a bit reckless. Offensive rebounding can only get us so far, we have to create some initial offense.
I think you've got a talented roster of pieces that don't fit well together. Like, it's almost as if the 2022 recruiting class focused too much on getting the top talent and not enough about whether that talent made sense as a unit.
At least, that's what I keep telling myself. I'd love to see Scheyer go with a 3 PF starting lineup experiment next year just to see what happens.
We just have too many players, period. There are a variety of rotations that mesh well together depending on what we need, but Scheyer needs to decide what his best lineup is and stick with it.
Nah we’ve been worse. I expected an L here and was pleasantly surprised by how well Duke played early on, but we just couldn’t hold on.
We’re looking better, have to start translating that into results.
Duke fans are especially pessimistic, which makes sense because of our history and the ranking of this class. But realistically, not all classes are the same. Give scheyer the zion class or equivalent, and he'd probably have 1-2 losses. Inevitably, we lost a lot of players, and our freshmen were a little overhyped. I firmly believe that even coach K would be having a mediocre season, definitely a better one but not a great one.
Recruiting rankings across the board have been more inaccurate than usual this year. These are COVID high school kids. Recruiting wasn't as effective during COVID. You didn't see them play as many games, and so you've got more variance.
Duke's freshman aren't playing like they were expected to, plain and simple. But it's not just a Duke phenomenon.
I'm absolutely shocked Duke is as mid as they are this year. I can't remember a Duke team under coach k being unranked yet when the polls come out Duke will be unranked. I am a bit wary of scheyers ability but he is also following a legend.
I can. 2021.
It's been a disappointing year so far for sure, but it was pretty clear from the first few games this is not a top-15 team. At least not how they're playing.
There's still time to turn it around. It's January.
The frustrating thing is that nothing is being fixed. We are still posting up Young and Flip unsuccessfully, still play them together while Young is at the 3 point line pump faking (LOL), still don't let Dariq get on-ball opportunities, still suck at 3 point shooting yet refuse to even give Schutt a chance, still don't push Lively to go for it inside instead of passing it out (and causing TOs). Guys can have great games some days (like Proctor before desperation mode today) and be invisible the next, but ultimately nothing changes. Scheyer is more and more deserving of blame
So instead of looking like a 14th place ACC team we go back to regular levels of underachievement? Sorry but being better than a team that got absolutely clapped and nearly lost to BC is not going to cut it for talent of this level, especially when the same patterns manifest themselves over and over.
Also to add, Clemson did not have a good shooting night despite being 38% on the season from 3 and having three 40%+ shooters; they won because they relied on outworking us in the paint down the stretch while we settled for 3s. Them going 3-17 is atypical (unlike us, for whom 3-17 from 3 is a regular occurrence away from home). Some of that was our defense, but there were several fairly contested looks that could have gone in or out but didn't fall for them. If they went 1st half NC State on us, they easily win by 10+.
Clemson played well, Duke refused to put the ball in the basket for about 5 minutes. Not much you can do if you’re just never gonna score. Still, nice to see us not get blown out.
The only way this team hits its ceiling is if Young plays less than 16 minutes a game imo. Teams don’t fear him whatsoever defensively and they go right at him when he plays extended minutes. He struggles to guard bigs, forwards, wings, and guards. There isn’t a single switch on the court that he can make consistently and offensively team are content to let him head fake until he turns the ball over or has to kick the ball out with 8 second left on the clock
Lively and Whitehead have got to get more minutes as Blakes and Young get less
I feel like this Duke team is falling victim to the same things Kentucky has dealt with. Having a program built on one and done recruits leaves you susceptible to having teams that just don’t mesh well and work within the system that has historically worked for these programs.
I'm so over being a one and done team. Duke wins when we have a good mix of lower and upperclassmen. It's not even that Coach K left, it's been a problem since we became a one and done team. 2010 and 2015 we had 4 year players and leaders
I’m a little hesitant to say give him a significant raise until he can do this two years in a row. Our big problem with Brownell is he’d put out a year like this but then go back to being below average the next year. This start has me cautiously optimistic though
at a school like Clemson, we're not going to draw in top recruits so it's really going to be year to year depending on how the transfers we get end up producing (Galloway was our transfer this year and he looks great so far)
At some point this is coaching. The offense has been completely stagnant all year. And yet, we still aren’t running set plays, still aren’t teaching the off-ball players to cut, and Scheyer is continually playing the 2 big lineup which clogs the lane. When we just run “motion” for a group that doesn’t know how to create, the outcome will be bad
I really hope the locker rooms get taken away or some sort of punishment for a kick in the behind, also roach being back healthy is a need not a want at this point
Idk I think the scheyer is building the team he’s getting 1 or two guys that will stay multi seasons, I think Procter, mark, Blake’s, reeves, and shutt while yea only 2-3 r great they could become better, roach does have a real blue devil feel though
This team sucks to watch. They play so sloppy. Although I guess they pretty much look like a team of almost all freshmen led by a first year head coach, which they are.
Can’t wait to watch us lose to Carolina by 30 twice. Doom.
Clemson fans having an identity crisis over Brownell this season
Brownell has mastered the art of doing just enough to keep his job every year, and I think we should all be inspired by his example.
Kirk Ferentz of basketball
Spot on example.
Does Brownell have an incompetent, racist son on his staff that he refuses to fire?
The old Gus Malzahn special
Bahgawd he should be my client
Brownell is quiet quitting
Fucking millennials
The Bruce Weber special

It’s the Brownell cycle. Do shit for four years and get to the sweet 16 when you need an extension
I’m all in on our guys. Fluke or not if we can have a deep tournament run like 2018 I’ll be very happy. This team is on fire right now and is playing with a lot of heart
The new Bruce Weber lol
Filipowski is a fucking giant when you’re court level with him.
Attention! On Monday we will have an AP poll that does not include UNC, Duke or Kentucky. This is not a drill.
First AP poll ever where Scheyer’s team isn’t ranked.
They didn’t deserve to be ranked after the spanking @ NC State lol.. Duke bias
Yeah I’ll have to agree with that
Dunno, Kentucky beat Tennessee, that alone will probably make them top 15 /s
Does State have a shot at a ranking?
It’s possible, a lot of lower ranked teams lost this week. We had a nice win but only played once this week so we’ll see
If there is anytime for NC State to make a resurgence into the national stage it’s now or never
We received votes, beat a ranked team, and quite a few teams between 15-25 lost. So I don’t see why not other than our “good wins” keep getting worse
But the Wolfpack only beat teams that lost to NC State. (All my friends in Raleigh are self loathing State fans)
Diet Carolina here gets it.
>Diet Carolina my sides
Woah woah woah…it’s Zima Carolina
No, they’re very upscale: White Claw Carolina
All State fans are self-loathing, it's part of what makes you a State fan to begin with.
It’s probably SOS; a lot of our losses are against still-good teams, and so it hurts to lose because we could be much better in terms of ranking if not for a few possessions.
Yeah in hindsight our schedual to start the year...yikes.
I hope so
Four votes to ranked seems like a big jump, but maybe, they'll be close if they're not...
All I know is my gut says "maybe"
Duke fans going to be digging in their closets looking for their NC State hats.
I feel attacked
Nah, they’ll just reuse the Bama hats they have for football season
That's for sure. Deservedly so, too
I mean we beat a top 5 team on the road
You also lost at home to South Carolina, who just lost its 2nd home game in a row by over 40 points
Oh for sure we have no business being ranked. I was just trolling .
A little bit of light trolling from the blue bloods
And probably no Clemson either. Losing to USC means, as the announcer said, that they would never be ranked.
Rank us you cowards
How did y'all lose to South Carolina? For those not aware, Carolina currently down 74-31 to A&M. No, that is not a typo
Second game of the year, played awful, PJ was still injured, and they made an amazing game winning shot
It happens…
Hero shot.
Again, how did we lose to UofSC and get blown out by Loyola? Amazing job by this team so far in conference play
The Brownell special
You're not wrong, fully expect us to finish right around .500 in conference, lose in the 2nd round of the ACCT to Louisville, and then bubble bust.our way to the NIT as a 2 seed to lose to Tulsa in the first round
We’ve seen that movie a few times lol
Hall was great but Schieffelin was the most physical and annoying player on the court tonight and it helped so much. He’s developed so much already compared to last year.
The announced called his reverse pivot move something. What was that?
Imagine telling someone that only one team out of Charleston, UNC, Duke, and Kentucky would be ranked this late into the season
That win against COfC keeps looking better 😤😤😤
We keep managing to make our losses / close wins look quality bc the teams keep turning out good. Charleston, Alabama, Iowa state…
We don't talk about VT.
Who?
Bacot is our team. Therefore our team has not played VaTech.
I really can’t believe we won with Hunter/Tyson combining for 12 points. I’m starting to think we may actually be pretty good.
A win v Duke isn’t what it used to be
damn inflation reducing the value of everything...
By god thought it was with the court storm
This is the most duke comment ever.
They’re meeting at the paw. /s
Atmosphere in Littlejohn was electric. Tigers making some noise. PJ Hall had a career game!!!
That was one of the best atmospheres for a game I went to. This is including football
2009 Littlejohn was a top venue in all of college basketball. The potential is there
Beating #4 Duke 74-47 was pretty cool
Stood on the floor for that one after camping for like five or six days. So epic.
I was on the front row near midcourt. Gave Greg Paulus an earful every single time he was at the scorer’s table. My buddy did the same with Singler. Easily a top 5 Littlejohn memory for me.
I went to a few games in 2008-09, but I was five then, so I don’t remember it that well
This makes me feel old! Do me a favor If you’re still at Clemson now - go to more basketball games! I attended in the golden age of football but I really ended up missing out on basketball.
I attend every home basketball game as it is
Missed opportunity.
Maybe they’ll rank us now?
We could be first in the ACC with 2 ranked, 2 loss ACC teams behind us - incredible.
Clemson fans, I'm sorry, but I think you guys are a tournament team this year. I know it's hard to hear but they're probably typing up an extension for Brownell right now.
He can't keep getting away with this
THIS WEEK IS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING. MERRY LATE CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
As I have always said I love Brownell as coach and he deserved to stay at Clemson while making the tournament 3/10 times.
3/12, actually
Brownell isn't perfect, but it's been obvious that the vitriol toward him has never been about results. Clemson fans simply can't handle having someone that hot as their head coach.
The combo of him and assistant Dick Bender is just too much 🥵
Every time I remember that we have an assistant coach named Dick Bender is the funniest moment of my day
RANK 👏 CLEMSON 👏 YOU 👏 COWARDS!
Ranked Clemson means Brownell extension
We have accepted our fate
We 100% should have fired brownell several years ago. ...but 7-0 is pretty fun
woohoo
With 5:30 left to play, Lively subbed in. For the next ~3 minutes Clemson only scored 2 more points. RANK US
Clemson being undefeated in ACC play going under the radar is exactly where i want to be
I rushed the court, it was awesome
There's some hate building in the comments for the court storming, but ignore that noise. This was the game that a lot of people said would bring clemson back to earth and you guys looked good and got a win where you were obviously the better team. You deserve the fun that comes with being the #1 team in the acc.
Yes, certainly, #1 in the standings for sure. If you can say one thing about the ACC it’s that Clemson is the #1 team, in the standings.
Who is playing better than clemson in the ACC right now?
An argument could be made that in a few weeks Clemson being the number 1 team in the ACC standings, which is verifiably true, might not be true anymore. Man this comment is safe AF
I don’t know why he’s downvoted, it’s a great comment.
Glad to see students having fun with basketball this year! Makes my basketball fan alumni heart happy
WE WANT BAMA ^in ^football
Clemson’s for real! That’s good news for our loss to them earlier this year
That applies for both flairs
I suppose that’s true! Though I’m a Penn State fan/alum, Pitt is the secondary because I’m from near Pittsburgh
So Clemson is for real huh? Extend Brownell!

Is Brad Brownell under or over rated? The world may never know.
The correct answer is yes.
Brad Brownell exists in the rating superposition
Schroedinger's basketball
None of these dudes are NBA ready yet a minimum of 3 of them will leave. Smh
Aren’t I you used to that by now? Lol
Usually I can convince myself on one or two or them. Whitehead should be OK but he's still a few years away. Reminds me of the Matt Hurt years
ARE WE A BASKETBALL SCHOOL NOW???
Nice work Clemson bros. Iowa message boards have been lighting up with the hope of your likely top 50 NET ranking tomorrow. We appreciate you.
Thank you Clemson, very cool. Textiles/Agriculture schools rise up
NC state and Clemson ranked with Duke and UNC both unranked.... has to be first time ever.
Nobody knows how to make a basket. *One* total make from the floor in the last 8 minutes. If I was Scheyer I would look at every single player in the locker room and tell them “None of you are future NBA players with what you’ve shown. Get your head out of your ass.”
If I was Scheyer I'd also be looking at how my own decisions directly affected the outcome of the game

Brownell, Keats and Capel all going for ACC coach of the year as we all expected.

What was that reverse pivot move PJ Hall did in the first half called? He did it again and the second time the announced said who it was named after.
I feel like this Duke team is falling victim to the same things Kentucky has dealt with. Having a program built on one and done recruits leaves you susceptible to having teams that just don’t mesh well and work within the system that has historically worked for these programs.
Rushing the court changed my life
It changed my life as well
We’re tanking for Wemby right?….right?
Gg Duke. Y’all brought the heat and locked Tyson down. No one could handle rebounds, it seemed.
I'm so over being a one and done team. Duke wins when we have a good mix of lower and upperclassmen. It's not even that Coach K left, it's been a problem since we became a one and done team. 2010 and 2015 we had 4 year players and leaders
been saying it for years, there’s no chemistry when the turnover is so high, it creates some ugly ass basketball
Amazing win, 7-0 in conference play is something I never would’ve thought I’d see for Clemson. Still, Fire Brad Brownell
Give Brownell every damn dollar for the rest of life. And rank us you cowards!
I’m a little hesitant to say give him a significant raise until he can do this two years in a row. Our big problem with Brownell is he’d put out a year like this but then go back to being below average the next year. This start has me cautiously optimistic though

Notable basketball school Clemson
Yeah, the calls were bad, but we lost, gg Clemson Scheyer had something good on defense with lively and dariq, then he stopped doing it :/
I’m getting nervous about Scheyer now
Not sure why you are. His players cannot make shots to save their lives. Very disappointed in our players this year more so than Jon.
I mean you’re not wrong
At some point this is coaching. The offense has been completely stagnant all year. And yet, we still aren’t running set plays, still aren’t teaching the off-ball players to cut, and Scheyer is continually playing the 2 big lineup which clogs the lane. Nah panicking now is silly. Let’s be patient
:(
I really hope the locker rooms get taken away or some sort of punishment for a kick in the behind, also roach being back healthy is a need not a want at this point
I worry that I was right last year when I said that roach was the last true dookie.
Idk I think the scheyer is building the team he’s getting 1 or two guys that will stay multi seasons, I think Procter, mark, Blake’s, reeves, and shutt while yea only 2-3 r great they could become better, roach does have a real blue devil feel though
We a basketball school now, at least until September.
Or when baseball season starts...
I’m excited to see what Bakich can do
Hashtag quality loss.
Hire Brownell!!
This team sucks to watch. They play so sloppy. Although I guess they pretty much look like a team of almost all freshmen led by a first year head coach, which they are. Can’t wait to watch us lose to Carolina by 30 twice. Doom.
Sir, have you seen us play this year?
Man, Clemson’s next 5 games in January are all super winnable. We could actually see a 12-0 Clemson team at the beginning of February. Wild year
And then they lose their 1st ACCT game lol
What a beautiful day of college basketball Also rank (both of) us cowards!
Duke not duke this year
What's wrong with scheyer??? Duke was supposed to be good.
I just want to say, from a neutral standpoint....ahahaahahahaha.......ha.
Hell yes. Good job Clemson bros
Exxxxxxxxcellent Tigers, exxxxxxcellent
Did they really just storm the court on a team that’s about to be unranked?
it's called meeting at the paw
Yes. Do you not understand how historically bad Clemson is at basketball?
Sure did
Yes, it was amazing
Yeah, what are you gonna do about it?
I appreciate the respect, didn’t think we’re good enough for a court storm.

It was “a big win for the program”. Or something.
