Some people like it "hot," though
I imagine the real concern could be slight amount of rust and resulting metal flakes. I've had metal slivers before, but from working on furniture. This....would be a new world of pain.
I tend to agree with their main idea that we need less cars in cities and give people the option to use public transit, but a lot of them are a bit crazy
I mean, they're kinda right. The US isn't a great model to follow because of how automobile centric it is. How many big cities here have extensive, functioning public transport options or everything you need in walkable distance? Compare that with Europe, China, India where you have metros, buses, trams etc. We also don't really need freeways cutting through a big city.
But they do take it a bit too far for sure. You can't ban all cars. Public transport often doesn't offer the ability to get around on your own time, and go wherever you want precisely.
But again that comes back to the main point. You should have as many options as you want to get somewhere. You wanna take your car? You wanna bike? You wanna walk? You wanna take a train or tram? You wanna hop on a bus? The US just doesn't have those options.
> and bike tens of hundreds of miles
Nah, I'm a pretty big member of the sub, and its about banning the enforced use of cars, and putting money into other things not just freeways.
We want everyone to be *able* to use a bike. Currently it just takes too long to bike to the shops, but shops should be closer, same with schools etc. So that you can if you want.
You can always drive in any world, but it should be easy to not drive too if you dont want.
You jest, but it is a fetish sub.
I say this as someone that fully supports replacing cars with trains, bike lanes, pedestrian paths, and mixed-use zoning: That sub is full of zealots that often go to irrational extremes with their hatred of motor vehicles.
The sheer hyperbole you often find there borders on the comical, but the visceral emotion is so real that you know many of the posters legitimately loathe motor vehicles with every fiber of their being, and they do not hesitate to tell you this.
So it's a fetish sub for moral outrage. People stroke eachother off about how cars are not just bad, or that car-centric city design tends to be extremely poor for human flourishing, but that cars are actively, maliciously evil.
That sub could probably go toe to toe with vegans and win in terms of moral outrage over their chosen cause.
Again, I say this as someone that fully agrees that we should transition away from the extreme use of motor vehicles we see today.
I am not saying cyclists should or shouldn’t use cycle lanes if they are available, I often cycle outside of the cycle lanes if someone is too slow as I need the path of least resistance.
I am however predominantly a pedestrian and the number of times I am given the green light to cross the road and then a cyclists whizzes past me with no regard for the traffic lights being red is infuriating and I find it really risky for myself. If this were cars, they would be punished but cyclists aren’t so they continue.
I think this confidence is aided by the fact that the route has segregated cycle lanes and the fact that the road is bus only so there isn’t a lot of car traffic at intersections.
I know. I think the original comment that I made had been poorly worded. I should have specified that my grievances are more local than general. Just where I am, cyclists and busses are the only traffic on the road. The fact that you have mostly cyclists and the occasional bus has essentially made cyclists the new drivers in arrogance.
Idk man maybe Wrexham is just backwards but I ain’t making this shit up, they’ll hold up traffic for no good reason, our pedestrian paths are very wide and they get shared by cyclists and pedestrians, why on earth would they choose the roads is beyond me
Cyclists and pedestrians sharing one path is very dangerous no matter how wide it is—cyclists are much faster and are not able to stop on a dime or weave thru traffic easily. While it’s not as dangerous for a pedestrian to be hit by a bike as it is to be hit by a car, pedestrians should not have to worry about dodging rapidly moving vehicles of any kind, and cyclists shouldn’t have to weave through slow-moving traffic at risk of injury. Cyclists sharing the road with motor traffic is 100% safer for all involved—although of course, the safest choice is to split the three modes up entirely, as much as possible.
I prefer the idea of cyclists far more than drivers but sometimes... The way cyclists abuse the fact they've got dedicated, segregated cycling infrastructure, they are trying to ensure that no more investment goes into cycling.
that's because cars kick debris into bike lanes, they're often obstructed and unmaintained. Shocker that they would rather cycle on a cleaner area.
They also pay taxes for that same road.
No they don’t, they pay tax, I pay tax + road tax 😅 and on top of that I pay MOT and insurance, not sure why you would bring that up lol (Not saying they should pay road tax though) also, roads have pot holes but you don’t see cars using the pavements for that reason like tf? I think most cyclists will agree that if they have their own lane then they should use it, if not then they are just assholes
No I’m not mad, I’ve just said I don’t think cyclists should be taxed for roads, that would be incredibly unfair, for example cyclists are not aloud on highways and other fast roads so taxing them would be a downright robbery
the population isn’t fudged like in simcity. simcity fudges the pop. so that it gives you a realistic number but doesn’t tell you how many sims are simulated. in skylines cims aren’t fudged and give you the number of simulated cims. the fudged pop. is usually around 3x the simulated one, so the pop. of this city would be around 675k. still could barely pay for the road maintenance but hey
The population isn’t meant to represent real life. I generally find that the way cities look in this game typically suit a city of 5-10x its population in real life.
Yeah they are I think, AI calculates the fastest route somewhere (I think?) so they usually prefer motorways / highways / freeways whatever cause of the faster speed
Edit (to clarify): even if a freeway is a longer distance than another road, CIMs will likely use it if it gives them a shorter arrival time
It really should account for the average congestion of the network and redistribute trips to other modes as they become faster. Not sure if it does or not.
I don’t think the game does have that cause my CIMs will literally just drive straight into a traffic congested area when they could get to their destination quicker by going around the block
Total distance v travel time is very different though. If there’s a 30 speed limit road that’s shorter, I’m pretty sure they’ll choose the 70 speed limit road even if it’s longer as they’ll be able to get there quicker
Right but that doesn’t mean they prefer motorways. You are conflating the two.
I can flip the script and make a two lane road faster and longer and the quickest route to point b over a highway. They will choose the two lane road.
Your assertion is correct expect for preference of road type. That’s what I’m pointing out.
Oh yeah I don’t dispute that, it’s just because usually a motorway would be the network with the fastest speed limits so that’s why I used it as an example
*Shortest time with no traffic which usually ends up being the faster highways but not always. If the AI had traffic monitoring then they could avoid back ups and take side roads
Well, Cities uses a very different balance from real life as for occupants per building.
the high density housing can feature a 80 floor building that's housing max 48 families or whatever. The high tech businesses are ridiculous, 100 floor buildings with 5 employees.
The reason for this is obvious, if you'd have realistic numbers you'd drown in traffic and your small town would already kill your computer pretty soon, but it does mean that SC is using a tuned and balanced number of occupants. They might've dialed it up or down over the years to work better.
It just changes the numbers of buildings. Base game has 4 household per low density 4x4 home, where as realistic pop has 1 household. High density in base game has something like 16 households whereas realistic pop has more like 48, depending on the size.
Same goes for commercial, offices etc. It's a great mod but youll be building suburbs for the rest of time and will have to learn to use high density sparingly
Gotta agree that the Realistic Population mod definitely has you reconsidering using high density.
I spent hours building the best area I’ve ever built, purposely high density to replicate what’s popping up in cities now. Built what I thought was the perfect transport network (without the mod, would have worked) and then pressed play. It choked instantly and it ruined my week. Had to delete and start again🤣
All that has been mentioned plus you can customize buildings. If you think a building would have more or less occupants, you can change the number for that building, or all that are like it.
This is all too much. You have exits just a couple blocks from each other. Kansas City doesn't have this freeway density and it's twice the population and very freeway-happy. Freeways don't need to go everywhere. Just pick a few high-volume routes and place them there with well-spaced exits. If you still have traffic problems, zoning may be more of the issue. People need to have everything they need close by so they don't have to travel across town in the first place.
In real life, yeah, but in CS don't cims just pick a commercial area at random to visit, even if it's super far away? It seems like for the game is makes sense to make it as easy as possible to move back and forth across the whole city even if it's lousy real life planning.
The cemetery people literally go across the map to pickup someone when there's a cemetery right by that person's house. I think the game should choose the closest one, traffic would be much better.

Not all cyclists are, but way too many are.
It’s a loud minority if that makes sense, most of them arnt dicks but some of them are bellends
that's because cars kick debris into bike lanes, they're often obstructed and unmaintained. Shocker that they would rather cycle on a cleaner area. They also pay taxes for that same road.

This game needs more realistic road maintenance costs. No way a town of 225k can even begin to pay for all that.
And more realistic railways because chuga chuga choo choo
There is a transit mod that lets you modify all public transit to have more realistic capacity.
Ik ik, am a transit connoisseur myself 😃
Which 👀
I believe it is called Improved Public Transport 2 by BloodyPengiun!
Its the one i subbed to then! Since theres two
And more realistic railwaysand and bike infrastructure because fuck c*rs.
Well the population scaling isn't exactly realistic anyways.
the population isn’t fudged like in simcity. simcity fudges the pop. so that it gives you a realistic number but doesn’t tell you how many sims are simulated. in skylines cims aren’t fudged and give you the number of simulated cims. the fudged pop. is usually around 3x the simulated one, so the pop. of this city would be around 675k. still could barely pay for the road maintenance but hey

Do they actually use it though?
I think the ai is programmed to prefer them
They are, slightly
I found the outside connections just hit the first exit
Yeah they are I think, AI calculates the fastest route somewhere (I think?) so they usually prefer motorways / highways / freeways whatever cause of the faster speed Edit (to clarify): even if a freeway is a longer distance than another road, CIMs will likely use it if it gives them a shorter arrival time

It only pre decides that, too much cpu power to live calculate traffic (but of course mods change that).
Correlation != causation. They prefer fastest route, doesn’t matter the road.
Total distance v travel time is very different though. If there’s a 30 speed limit road that’s shorter, I’m pretty sure they’ll choose the 70 speed limit road even if it’s longer as they’ll be able to get there quicker

Right into a gridlock, usually
I also increase the speed limit with a mod from ridiculously slow limits to 85-90 mph lol. Don't care if they crash!
AI will take the fastest pre planned route, and the faster highway speeds will tend to lead to that.
This is incorrect information
*Shortest time with no traffic which usually ends up being the faster highways but not always. If the AI had traffic monitoring then they could avoid back ups and take side roads

For some reason big cities(by area) are still less populated than the original ones with the same area. Anybody knows why is that?
Well, Cities uses a very different balance from real life as for occupants per building. the high density housing can feature a 80 floor building that's housing max 48 families or whatever. Realistic Population Edit: name plus link https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2025147082
The Realistic Population mod is a good fix and does not kill you computer nor drown you in traffic if your city is built well
How does it work? Just beef up the numbers without adding any cims? I'll check it out for sure, There really is a mod for everything....
It just changes the numbers of buildings. Base game has 4 household per low density 4x4 home, where as realistic pop has 1 household. In addition to that the game is also much denser than a typical American City because it uses less parking space
Normal cuties use underground parking everywhere Edit: meant to write cities, wrote cuties, point still stands so im leaving it
Parking underground is absolutely adorable.
I think you got some city in your highway
Who needs a city when you can have asphalt?
Whats your trafic flow?
Needs more highways.
And more lanes, why there are houses anyway?
Demolish everything, build parking lots 👍
This is horrible, i like it!
this is so american it hurts
I'm, glad I don't have it in my county.
Looks nice but god its american
Bruh please tell me you got a decent transit network as well!
None at all ;) in fact I demolished the default train tracks!
Oh dear, not even buses??
No trams?
How can I have a map like this of my city?
Someone elsewhere said it was a mod named CSL Map View, I think.
Houston department of planing has approved this
This is all too much.
Kansas isn't located in Cities: Skylines though.
Kansas City is widely recognized as having one of the most overbuilt freeway systems, and even they didn't go this extreme.
Gotta remember CS isn’t very true-to-scale though, if this was 1:1 scale with real life, the exits probably wouldn’t be as close
Fair, but even if we do, say, a conversion of 1 block = 1/4 mile, it's still far too dense.
Is Kansas City really that different than any other large US City?
In real life, yeah, but in CS don't cims just pick a commercial area at random to visit, even if it's super far away? It seems like for the game is makes sense to make it as easy as possible to move back and forth across the whole city even if it's lousy real life planning.
The cemetery people literally go across the map to pickup someone when there's a cemetery right by that person's house. I think the game should choose the closest one, traffic would be much better.
Can i ask you why this is bad? I do a similar thing?
And I thought I used a lot of freeways
I think it's very aesthetically pleasing. How did you make this map? By hand, or do you use a tool?
