Why are cartoon conspiracy theories so depressing?
By - IWantToBoxMyUncle1v1
It's funny, you should see the Ms. Puff theory
What's the Mrs. Puff theory?
Starts out fairly good, Mrs. Puff being a psycho that changed identities due to crime makes sense, but wow does he go off the deep end with that warden shit and the kleptomania. Also the stinger theory about her husband doesn't make sense because Mrs. Puff is clearly a false identity; it's literally an important part of the theory that he goes over. There is no Mr. Puff, at least not under that name. Plus the pufferfish that comes back to life in the movie isn't being used for lighting like the supposedly real Mr. Puff is, and regardless it's been established that there is a timeskip before the first movie and after the early episodes and episodes since then have been placed inside that timeskip, which is why we never see the second Krusty Krab.
I love how this theory starts off plausible and then gets buck wild in a matter of minutes lmao. Totally worth the watch.
Ikr. It feels like the creators went out of their way JUST to add these crucial details lmao.
Stephen Hillenburg and co. had a really weird sense of humor. I really have no way to describe the humor in Spongebob. I can definitely see it as intentional for Mrs. Puff.
Welcome to the world of Surrealism, Buddy
Most of the things he pints out are either: inconsistencies, do why should we think yhey were put there willingly?; Obvious jokes, and perhaps and references; background filler, so it just basically the equivalent of the "fine tuning" argument for an asset flip game (these asset were put there willingly! I didn't steal them, i use them creatively!)
At the end of the day, you get what you wanted, a conspiracy theory
By the theroizer?
Nah, by Alex Bale
Shock value. That's all.
I still remember when Adventure Time first came out, and all the theorists were like "what if, its like, the post apocalypses!? OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SCAAAAAARY"
Then that was outright made canon, and so the same people were like "uh... actually Finn is in a COMA! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SCAAAAAAARY!"
I’m going to be honest the [insert character here] is in a coma theory is really goddamn lazy.
Bro every time I read coma theories I think about the Ash coma theory and how "Brock is an extension of his sexuality" or something and like, what the fuck? Y'all he's 10. It's just so funny.
But Adventure time has practically always been explicitly shown to be post-apoc.
Because teenagers are edgy and will buy into any edgy bullshit.
So yeah, obviously Ash was in a coma all along.
maybe the real theories were the friends we made along the way
Fuck that my theories keep telling me your all just Nokia phones texting each other and the internet is just inhabited by Nokia phones
Yeah, this fucking shit. Almost ruined my childhood.
Ah yes that one . I have seen some pretty heavy fanarts of that theory lmao
What can I say, people just love making up crazy theories about anything
Just like we have people who enjoy horrors and haunted houses because they like getting scared/startled, we also have people who enjoy fucked up fanfics/theories because they like getting disturbed. Making dark fanfics/theories about kid shows in particular is popular among these people, because the feeling of disturbance is amplified when the source material is innocent on the surface.
Because unoriginality when alot of it has no support and can be mostly debunked by saying...
ITS A FUCKING ANIME, WHY TF WOULD ASH BE IN A COMA OR SOME SHIT LET ALONE WHEN THIS ISNT EVEN THE ONLY SERIES WITH A PROTAGONIST THAT WONT FUCKING AGE. LIKE JUST STFU WITH THAT EDGY ,DEPRESSING "Akshually he was most likely in a coma or mentally ill" BULLSHIT AS IF IT MAKES YOU SEEM ANY SMARTER THAN THE KIDS WHO WATCH AND ENJOY THE OBVIOUSLY FICTIONAL GODDAMN SHOW YOU FUCKING KILLJOY!!
HE IS NOT IN PURGATORY OR AN ASYLUM OR A DRUG INDUCED STATE BUT YOU'RE IN NEED OF A FUCKING HOBBY LIKE DAMN!!
Something like that..
I like the Ho-Ho granted his wish theory better anyway
I mean, some fucking anime will do you much worse and still stay coherent
I just don't like how cookie-cutter and samey the "protagonist is actually in a coma/purgatory/dead" theories are. They all play out virtually identically, like the people coming up with them just copy+pasted it from the last time someone suggested it. Occasionally someone puts a neat spin on it but 9/10 times if you've read one, you've read them all.
Yeah those ones usually don’t add to the show as a whole and just try to explain any wacky things that might happen. But the Phineas and Ferb theory about Doof being Phineas’s biological dad is the only one that gets a pass because it builds on whats already known and makes some sense.
Except Doof already admitted he never saw Linda again after their initial date, so it doesn't make sense for him to be the dad.
True but it’s still one of the more interesting theories to me
Nah, it requires you to forget that Candace is biologically related to Phineas, and that Doof has a daughter her age.
That’s true but she could be a half sibling? I don’t follow the theory I just find it fun and it isn’t likely true.
> I just don't like how cookie-cutter and samey the "protagonist is actually in a coma/purgatory/dead" theories are.
It's the emo edgelord 12-year-old's equivalent of "...and it was all a dream."
It's so boring. Like wow, the main character hit their head early in the series, the rest of it is their imagination on their hospital bed!! Like why even bother making these theories lol.
I like the ones that are funny, like ones that say everyone in Spongebob is in a time loop, never to age or grow.
I hate these so much. I think the funny thing I've heard in a lot of them is some sort of justification of how to story is being presented to us, like it's real. The "It's actually a movie" theories about... movies. Lol. I don't even know what to say to those.
Alright, who has the Spongebob Skin Theory video?
[Hmm I wonder...](https://youtu.be/Vb-ajY8M6gI)
The fact that these are considered "theories" tells me that people don't understand what a theory even is. Theories require an explanation for a collection of related facts or occurrences and aren't supposed to fall apart in the face of contradictory evidence. Shit like "Ash in a coma" is fanfiction and nothing more.
They are theories, okay? Conspiracy theories.
Superb example of pedantry.
Language changes. Adapt.
This argument has expired roughly 60 years ago: we’ve learned to track where the language aberrations are coming from, and sometimes even affect them
Now that we have the internet and people actively disproving the previously claimed 90+% literacy rates around the world, this has obviously become much trickier, but still not impossible as long as one is able to detect and ignore the temporary fads
So instead of discussing the topic of OP let's argue about the true meaning of ~~christmas~~ a word used?
Thats still pedantic as fuck.
Words, you know, mean things. In some areas, like legal and scientific jargon, they mean very specific things, and distinguishing similar, but distinct meanings is necessary, so “as fuck” is barely pedantic enough
Except we're not in a court this is reddit so being pedantic is just as excuse to be an asshole and feel superior about it. All you've done is derail the conversation with 'akshually', I don't see how that contributes.
For a laugh
One guy made a case that Fanboy and Chum Chum is actually a complex series that is about understanding absurdism, and how the main characters get into crazy hijinks since they know nothing matters in the end, no reward or punishment
That’s so deep (smokes)
i will now accept this as canon
Rolf from EEE is the same VA as Goku...that always blows my mind.
That was super Rolf 2 Ed boi or you could say Ascended Rolf...and this is to go even further beyond Edbois and Jawbreakers.
I blame stuff like *St. Elsewhere’s* and *Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter* for playing this sort of thing straight and introducing the possibility of that actually being true.
Oh god I used to love “lost episode” creepypastas lmao
The one of these I hate most is "Calvin is the only one who thinks Hobbes is real because something something adhd/autism." First of all, you're telling me you never heard of kids having imaginary friends? Second, Bill Watterson says there isn't supposed to be a real answer - it's about childhood and the subjective nature of reality, not whether dolls come to life. And lastly, there are all kinds of unhealthy ideas about mental illness wrapped up in that.
OP there is this one guy who made a case that Fanboy and Chum Chum are wild and energetic because they are actually absurdists (people who see the meaninglessness of existence) and use the lack of meaning to make the most of their life without worrying about which religion is right, or how to contribute most to society.
The video was posted on April 1st but I can't tell if its satire
In my opinion nowadays most of the shows are dark , edgy and mostly depressing so whenever something good shows up , people's brains starts making up crazy theories
I'll be honest, dark cartoon theories suck. In fact, it's usually the more happy theories that I like the most. For example, I always dug the theory of Courage being just a normal dog and all those scary things that appear in the show is just Courage's hyperactive dog mind making them seem real when they aren't. I like that because it doesn't shit on the characters or anything and there is a Courage music video that basically uses this concept:
That's the exact theory I was mentioning in my post lol, though I didn't want to go into detail for that one as it was actually good.
Yeah it was pretty badass. :)
The final episode's monster wasn't a monster at all but his own feelings of inadequacy.
It makes so much sense that it's just scary cause he was a little dog. Everything's so big.
The Ed, Edd n Eddy is the weirdest one because they literally leave the cul de sac in Big Picture Show, Ed has mentioned his mother taking his stairs, and they even to go school. It's literally just a regular cul de sac where kids screw around.
It’s like gap moe
It’s the supposed contrast between the kid-friendly nature of the show and the “dark secret meaning” grimness that makes it compelling to some
I am fine with implausible theories where it's just an exercise what is the most ridiculous thing you can justify but I hate all theories of the form what if every thing that happened in the story was actually fictional?
It's a work fiction it's obviously fictional why are trying to make it fictional in-universe what value does this add?
I would say it's important to highlight there are two kinds of theorizers.
1) Serious Theorizers who genuinely try to understand the work and uncover hidden mysteries
2) Meme Theorizers who don't necessarily seriously believe whatever they are saying they are just having spinning a narrative based on what evidence they can select with the more absurd conclusion the better.
If you don't enjoy meme theories then just don't engage in that material.
I truly despise those type of theories, like no duh, it's a cartoon. It's such a waste-of-time theory.
And I do want to say that I don't really follow up on theories too much, these are just the ones that I remember from years ago, so I wanted to just talk about them.
Its lazy cringe from agnsty teens and people who never stopped being angsty teens.
Its low effort crap
It’s because it’s juxtaposed to the more light-hearted kid's cartoon. Taking something that’s generally cheery and putting an eerie twist on it is very common on the Internet.
I think it’s just some people having some fun trying to make sense of the nonsensical.
Humans love to have explanations for thinks they don’t understand, that’s why deities and superstitions were created. I think crazy conspiracies are the modern equivalent of that.
Honestly as long as they don’t bully others that don’t subscribe to their theory, I say let them go off.
Their crazy theory doesn’t stop you from enjoying your favorite piece of media, nor does it stop you from coming up with your own theories.
I agree with what you said. I find those theories boring. Though I do find the Courage the Cowardly dog is from the dog's perspective theory
>The Krabby Patty is made of Krabs.
Well, duh, why else would it be called that?
It’s made from Starfish my dude
This could just be my personal experience, but aren't a lot of these things based around creepypasta kind of stuff? The corruption of innocent childhood experiences or interests is a pretty popular method for eliciting fear or discomfort.
I think it's thanks to teenagers who have *just* gotten into "dark" media. They know the kids' cartoons because those are what they have been watching for the past 13 years. But they are also now aware that there are "adult" shows and movies with violence, sex, swearing and death in them, and they think that is awesome. So some of them inevitably mix what they know (kids cartoons) with what they think is cool ("dark and adult" stories with death and violence).
Callback to the Operation C.A.N.C.E.R theory from Kids Next Door
It's because of those edgy teenagers.
I actually like the Ed, Edd n Eddy one even if it obviously isn't real, there's a bit more to it than what you described
It's okay to like them. Some theories can definitely be interesting. I don't want the take away from my rant to be that people should dislike the theories, rather that they leave things out that can be explained or debunk said theories.
Because they're really creepypastas
Wall-E is about... cannibalism !! HA
he even made another theory saying wall e is satan
There was phineas and ferb theory that said something like both of them were dead and candice was imagining that her brothers were alive or some shit
It’s people being edgy basically. And also lacking any semblance of a willing suspension of disbelief
Im glad this trend has kinda died out since the early 2010s, all these theories were really stupid and edgy for exactly the reasons you listed lol
"ThEyRe AlL dEaD 90s CaRtOoOnS wErE sO dArK oMg!!!1!1!" fuck off lol
Because people are incredibly desperate to ruin childhoods.
Fuck all "it was all a coma the whole time theories."
conspiracy theories for cartoons are often so goddamn boring.
Most of the ones I've seen are "main character is actually dead and everything that happens around them is side characters imagination, this 5 second clip taken out of context proves everything"
its not a proper cartoon conspiracy theory if it cant be disproven by just watching a single episode.
^mr ^krabs ^is ^actually ^hung, ^we ^see ^this ^in ^the ^episode ^where ^spongebob ^and ^squidward ^have ^unprotected ^anal ^sex ^on ^the ^krusty ^krab ^floor ^and ^multiple ^customers ^watch ^and...
These are just the ones that get the most intention because they are so creepy.
I remember the one that said that Ash from Pokémon never went on a journey, he’s actually in a coma. That’s why he has never aged for over 20 years.
a lot of the ideas here are good, though another reason i read once that i personally buy into is that some adults like these theories cause it makes them feel better about watching kids media.
probably not too true, but does make some sense
I thought the same thing. Perhaps these people are insecure about liking something that was made for kids, so they try to justify their interests by making everything dark and edgy.
It's kind of like how people try to paint Kirby as a dark franchise by hyper-focusing on the few "dark" lore tidbits, and then trying to apply that darkness to the rest of the cutesy and soft world. Even though (1) those lore tidbits are *incredibly* easy to miss if you don't already know how to access them (pausing during a boss fight), and (2) even the darkest pieces of Kirby lore are nowhere near as dark as actual grimdark stories.
I mean, what even is the darkest aspect of Kirby? The fact that [someone lost his daughter and all memory of her?](/spoiler) The implication that [Kirby could be descended from an ancient demon?](/spoiler) Yeah, SOOOO much darker than the likes of Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Kirby is definitely the darkest game franchise ever.
Even then, people who try to pass off Kirby as grimdark actually have something to go off of: pause description lore. It's just that they over-focus on that lore to the point where it overshadows the actual tone of the franchise: happy and carefree. The cartoon conspiracies just come completely out of left field.
The coma/dream/dead is a cheap way to come up with a theory, because you literally can’t contradict it
People get cynical i guess
Inversion of what cartoons normally are. That’s why they’re depressing
It’s teens and adults introducing real world drama and themes to shows that don’t typically have them
How the fuck does that Rugrats theory work? What about the episodes Angelica isn't in? Or the ones about the parents?
The Phineas and Ferb one
The directors debunked it over and over
Its like the 80s with their secret message in backwards music. People like finding secrets, and the only stuff that would be 'hidden' is dark stuff. Kinda like adults with illuminati theories.
Generally cartoon theories are pretty bad, and either purely for shock value, ignore a lot of evidence, or may be right but considering it’s clearly not what the author intended, isn’t right. The theory about the rugrats fit the first one pretty well, and edd edd and eddy fits the second, with the last the phineas not existing theory fitting best. There are some that are very likely true and don’t necessarily go against what the author intended as it’s more likely they just haven’t said it to be canon, although aligns with the show, such as bikini atoll and doof is phineass dad
most cartoons conspiracy theories are based on poor reasoning and they have little evidence for their site.People just made them up without doing much reasoning. They made those conspiracy theories depressing so that those theories can be caught people attentions.
Because cartoon fans grow up, continue to like cartoons, and society still, even now, stigmatizes that. With a manchild here and a basement there, Chee-T, Chee-T-os. So they feel their world has died or gone insane. What's a large part of a cartoon fan's world? Uhh, hmm... Cartoons? COULD be those. I mean, I've never PERSONALLY heard of a cartoon fan being very into cartoons at all-- I'm just saying it's possible.
Wow. I have this little meter that measures sarcasm levels, and it just threw up and started speaking Latin in reverse.
Not like it's the third one this week alone or anything...
It's literally just low effort creepypasta shit
as a general rule of thumb conspiracy theories are depressing tbh
Maybe because cartoons and animation is such laboring and exhausting work.
I remember these I didnt even grow up with these cartoons but I got a kick out of the conspiracy theories
I don’t know the last cartoon theories were the skin theory and how spongebob is just a marine documentary. They just seemed like silly and weird theories rather than just sad.
You see that makes it DEEP and MATURE, which makes it actually incredibly cool that I watch cartoons at 13 shut up DAD I HATE YOU!
/not S but I am dicking around so D I guess?
i literally just got one of those 3-hour “dark nickelodeon theories compilation” videos on autoplay, finding this was astounding timing
When I saw the Ed Edd N Eddy one my childhood was ruined
WHICH Ed Edd N Eddy one. There's like-- three.
Because it interests people that a childish colorful thing could be darker than things that are openly depressing, most people who do those theories have too much free time to not be bored
I wanna add that you can see Ed, Edd and Eddy’s parents in one episode. It was the one about the report cards.
People just have insane ideas about even the most innocent things, no matter what others do to debunk these so-called “theories”.
I always have been thinking about that too, it looks like a bunch of retarded dudes who can't thing any better and put all their sadness hopelessness and depression through these theories, although i find Krabby patty might be an exception because it looks so obvious once you read about it,the other theory that i like about SpongeBob is skin theory, kinda good too.
The only cartoon theories I liked were the Adventure Time theory because it is pretty much cannon that the show take place after an apocalyptic scenario and the Courage the Cowardly Dog theory which states that as a dog Courage is seeing those unfamiliar to him as monsters that aren't actually there. All other come off as bad creepypasta levels of edgey.
Without juxtaposition it's not really interesting. A rugrats fan theory that the kids are not good at escaping, their parents just want them to learn how to be dexterous and resourceful is just kind of lame by comparison.
