Beach Cliff Fish Steaks (Herring) In Louisiana Hot Sauce (Product of Canada)
By - jaba1337
Little herring "steaks". Appearance wise, nothing fancy, but nicely laid out in the tin. Plenty of hot sauce and oil.
Smell is a bit fishy, but not offensive by any means.
Texture is very nice. Pretty firm, nice bit of chew/bite to each piece. Not too dry. Little bit of spine crunch.
Taste is very good, nice and clean fish flavors, tiny hint of heat from the hot sauce. Definitely has some sort of savory/umami thing going on that makes you want to eat more.
I actually really enjoyed these, which is a first for me with a Beach Cliff tin. Some of the worst sardines I've ever had have been Beach Cliff, so this was definitely a surprise. I would gladly buy and eat again. Definitely adding to my budget list.
A lot of negativity on this brand. Glad these worked out. Did the fish flavor come through the hot sauce at all, or was it mostly just a vehicle for the sauce?
You can definitely taste the fish. The sauce is very mild, but it did have a little bit of lingering heat. I thought it was pretty well balanced between fish and sauce flavors.
Understood. I tried the CotS sardines in the LA hot sauce, and all I could taste was the hot sauce. I couldn't finish the can, it felt like eating spoons of hot sauce.
On the other hand, the lemon flavor from CotS was really tasty by comparison.
Thanks for the review!
Off topic: New to this sub (love it) and would love to see nutritional labels posted along with top-of-tin photos. I love sardines and other tinned fish, but some brands have a lot more salt than others. Also, it would be nice to know what the other nutritional variables are.
From what I remember with this brand is that you have to go online to look up nutritional info. I think the underside is blank and they out the website on the tin.
Yup, the photos show everything there is to see.
Agreed. I always try to take that photo for my reviews.
Interesting. I've never seen Beach Cliff Fish steaks before. The sauce is also a different shade than the Beach Cliff Louisiana hot sauce I've had.
Thanks for the review. I'll keep an eye out for these to redeem BC for me.
I grew up eating these. My grandparents always had a tin or 2 lying around. I'll need to pickup a tin just to see how they still hold up lol.
Never seen fish steaks, but their sardines were a definite mistake at my supermarket. Never again. Glad they make something worth trying though. Maybe their sardines factory just sucks. Happy eating!
West coast Canada product? Never seen here in Ontario..
