Uh Lincoln you're the coach. You get to make that decision.

MustardIsDecent

"If I asked you to come out of the game, what would you say?" "No." "Oh, ok I guess my hands are tied."

boardatwork1111

“Look at me, I am the coach now”-Caleb

anon97384

Probably didn't want to deal with Caleb's diva father

GolfOscarLimaFoxtrot

The boy didn't lick it off the ground that's for sure.

onyxblade42

What?

GolfOscarLimaFoxtrot

It's an Irish proverb, it means he got his traits from family.

ole_freckles

I will definitely use this in the future

braundiggity

I’ve loved Lincoln all year but it was so obvious he needed to pull Caleb. We might’ve lost either way, but we had no chance with him hobbled like that, and Caleb took SO MANY HITS staying in. Brutal.

WheatonsGonnaScore

Its possible to beat Utah with a qb at less than 50%

snowystormz

Nix was focused, having fun, hobbled, and still beat us

BobStoops401K

Yeah it was a stupid decision. It's kind of hard to describe but for all his brilliance, Lincoln also can be very idiotic. Like conceptual, theoretical stuff, he's an offensive genius. He has tons of good plays. Usually his offensive scheme and talent are enough to overwhelm opponents. But in terms of practical game management, a real experienced coach like Whittingham or Kliemann or Saban knows how to make in game adjustments to thwart Riley. Riley just doesn't have that hard nosed moxie that a traditional elite coach has.

2CommaNoob

The 4th and 7 call was idiotic too. The momentum swung the other way after that failed attempt. Even Reggie Bush was saying it was a dumb move

SoonerGeologist

That dude has no control over his players. The amount of embarrassing shit that happened here under his watch was out of pocket.

brokentr0jan

His culture seems very “we are friends” which is cool when everything is going fine but bad when it’s not

[deleted]

[удалено]

brokentr0jan

Back when I use to coach high school football I tried that approach… it doesn’t work for long. The problem with that approach is when you have to flip the switch and be the bad guy / adult and actually TELL people what to do and not ASK they do not respond at all. I don’t miss coaching, shits hard lol

GiaTheMonkey

Did you at least get one of those sweet multimillion dollar buyouts?

MightyCaseyStruckOut

Yeah, he was the HC of Allen HS

Temporary_Inner

Yep if you go the collaborative route you live and die off of it. On the flip side though if you're not a hard ass, you can't fake it. It'll wear you out.

AnEmptyKarst

If y'all won, then him finishing the game at 50% would add to his Heisman legacy But with the loss and the hits he took, it just feels like endangerment

SPCsooprlolz

His hand looked to be bleeding at the end, too. Hope that heals before the bowl

thatshinybastard

His hand was bleeding early on, I think he cut it on a helmet in the first one early second quarter

RiptideJoyride

The cut happened early on, just for reference. It’s what I originally thought was hampering him

Unhappy-Researcher87

Too much nail polish

SPCsooprlolz

Oh OK. I only caught the fourth quarter, thought it was fresh

TrappedInOhio

Caleb didn’t sign the big deal to play meaningless bowls. He’ll be “too hurt to play”.

RiptideJoyride

He played OU’s bowl last year why be so negative?

jackburtonscheck

He could be posturing for he is man voting

JLewiii

He's too soft to be a college head coach

brokentr0jan

I disagree. His biggest problem is the way he manages his staff. He needs a special teams coach, OC to help call plays, and needs to wake up and realize grinch is gonna hold him back.

Frequent-Bus1007

Grinch is a joke. If it’s 3rd and 19, don’t coach your players to go all out to strip the ball. Fucking make a tackle, force a punt and get the offense out there. Absolute joke

assmanx2x2

I was laughing my ass off at that one. That happened at OU frequently.

MissileWaster

Don’t forget about his S&C coach who can’t keep your best pass rushers on the field by the time it gets to third and long!

Nrlilo

You’re saying the play at the end of the half where the player laterals the ball 5 feet away from the kick off receiver wasn’t a set play?

brokentr0jan

Lol I still have not seen that play because I was taking a piss at the bar. So I can’t comment on that, all I understand is one of our players like yeeted the ball backwards. I really need to find the clip

Nrlilo

It was bad. It was pretty close to the end zone by the time USC jumped on the ball.

j_town12

It sucks man. Those are all the things OU fans were starting to grumble about and say out loud. It felt like LR’s response was to, instead of change or adapt, just leave and do the same thing somewhere else. I hope that’s not the case and that he can grow and evolve over time to be a better coach than when he started.

GrandYam_HomeRun

Do you honestly hope he grows and prospers? After the shit he pulled here sabotaging the 2021 season? The guy is a born and bred snake, we knew it at the time but couldn't change it. I'll take our 6-6 season in return for escaping Lincoln Riley ground hog day annual blowout CFP losses

Ehhhhhhhhhh

Hope he fails at everything he does for the rest of his life tbh

StaffPadding

PREACH

TheGreatLandRun

You are correct. But any OU fan who tried to discuss certain objective issues with how he runs a program are just called salty.

Temporary_Inner

Last year before "the move" a lot of local media guys kept saying "somethings not right in the locker room, but no one will say why. Everyone is acting strange." Still never found out why, but it makes me curious about the culture.

Roan_Psychometry

Seems like we are headed for Kyler Murray 2.0 when Williams goes to the league

marchano85

Need some examples. I’m enjoying this

SoonerGeologist

https://www.oklahoman.com/story/sports/2021/05/07/former-ou-football-players-trejan-bridges-seth-mcgowan-charged-robbery/4995148001/ https://fanbuzz.com/college-football/big-12/oklahoma/spencer-jones-fight/

AaronRodgersToe

It comes across as heisman campaigning to me.

tvchase

Anyone recruiting against Riley can point back to this quote when they're sitting in some kid's living room talking to his parents about their child's future. What an idiot.

notsaying123

Yeah I don't think this would have much of an impact

MettaBruschetta

If dudes like DJ Durkin and the Briles branch can keep recruiting w/o a problem I think Riley will be fine lol

housebird350

I have tried nothing and yet I am all out of options.

bubowskee

“Wouldn’t let him take him out” What’s the point of being a coach if you refuse to coach

bilbo_swagginz_boi

Absolutely pathetic. As a coach you have to make that decision and follow through so a kid doesn’t further hurt himself. You know a hyper competitive player will attempt to push through it but a coach needs to realize that helps absolutely no one, not the player or the team. Letting him run the ship like that and put himself at risk is unacceptable.

housebird350

> What’s the point of being a coach if you refuse to coach $$,$$$,$$$.$$

Mcswigginsbar

Lol you send him to the training tent and have them take his fucking helmet away. What kind of bullshit response is that? This asshat just doesn’t want to accept responsibility. At all.

HanztheSwaglord

WTF Caleb is literally returning next year, why the fuck would you risk injuring him more just so we can get annihilated by Georgia? I know Caleb is the competitive type and hates losing but YOU are the head coach and need to make that decision for him.

UteFlyersCardJazz

I think the committee could’ve forgiven you if you had gotten blown out if Caleb couldn’t play the rest of the game. Now they can’t.

HanztheSwaglord

Maybe, but personally if you lose to the same team twice you dont deserve the playoffs. Georgia would have violated the Geneva convention against this unit

SPCsooprlolz

It is pretty funny that all CFP discussions end with some variation of "who gets to lose to Georgia"

katarh

It's not funny if you're a Georgia fan and you have no idea which version of the team will appear. Our current hypothesis is that when Stetson Bennett IV gets his hair cut into a fade, as he is wont to do before big games, he morphs into Hesiman candidate Stequavious B. If we lawnmower LSU tomorrow, it further confirms the reverse Samson hypothesis.

kampfgruppekarl

Amen, it really feels like only Georgia can beat Georgia.

jbake27_

Upvote for stequavious that was a good one 💀

katarh

I wish I could claim credit. It was a nickname we gave him when he showed up to the official pre-season practice with a sick fade haircut and a Biggie Smalls shirt on.

RVAforthewin

Google the Twitter post where it surfaced Edited to add https://youtu.be/aDplYsMFzc4

mmdrew17

Ehh nah there’s no way we get in with any loss tonight. Either way it was foolish to keep him in though

MrF_lawblog

He's lying that's why. Like a coach couldn't bench their player if they wanted to. Unless he's admitting to be a chicken shit coach that can't stand up to his player for the betterment of their health, not sure what he had to gain by saying this stupid shit.

debaterthatchases

Lol ik I'm an OU flair but Lincoln has definitely proven himself to be chicken shit before.

Poopoopeepeeyeehee

The entire way he left was chicken shit lol

Tong_Po

And don’t forget that brisket

exwasstalking

I didn't watch the whole game but I saw that play and the next few series and he didn't look like a guy who blew out his hamstring to me.

Carnifex2

Yea this smacks of excuses. Caleb clearly wasnt 100% but he was still moving pretty well.

u-s-u-r-p

Nothing HCLR could do, QBCW said no 🤷🏼‍♂️

michigan_matt

Did the defense also refuse to come out after missing tackle after tackle?

AgoraiosBum

Oh no, they wanted to come out. Thats why they let Utah score.

LegallyBrody

I’ve never seen a defense look so defeated in my life.

coolhandluck

Spencer Rattler: "Wait. I could have refused to come out?"

kampfgruppekarl

Bo Nix in shambles

vanburenboys

Uh yeah I wish he would have refused to get benched in the RRS

Jkwhjr

Hahahahaha

LiberateLiterates

Okay but at the end of the day it’s not Williams decision. Though I don’t think USC would have fared better with him out. He had some impressive moments in that second half until the train completely derailed.

DetroitvErbody

Utah has been known to get blown out by USC backup QBs. Might have worked.

Jakeneb

I’m not saying they would have won, but almost nothing could have been worse offensively than what usc produced after that point. 1 TD in 2.5 quarters

MrNudeGuy

if it was that bad they should have pulled him

sunburntredneck

Or maybe Linc doesn't have the balls to tell a player to shut up and sit out for his and the team's sake

StaffPadding

He doesn't. Has no spine, you can tell by the way he left

ExternalTangents

Or Lincoln thinks the backup is way less than half as good as him

KenTrojan

It's this. Miller Moss isn't anywhere close to Williams. We had a better shot at winning with Williams at 30% than Moss at 100%. Williams put up decent stats all things considered.

samuelbassett

But what happens when you add Kurt Angle to the mix?

Dead_Baby_Kicker

THE CHANCES OF YOU WINNING DRASTIC GO DOWN! SEE THE 3 WAY AT SACRIFICE YOU GOT A 33 1/3 CHANCE OF WINNING. BUT I, I GOT A 66 2/3 CHANCE OF WINNING CAUSE KURT ANGLE KNOWS HE CAN'T BEAT ME AND HE'S NOT EVEN GONNA TRY! SO SOMOA JOE YOU TAKE YOUR 33 1/3 CHANCE MINUS MY 25% CHANCE AND YOU GOT 8 1/3 CHANCE OF WINNING AT SACRIFICE. BUT THEN YOU TAKE MY 75% CHANCE OF WINNING IF WE WAS TO GO 1 ON 1 AND THEN ADD 66 2/3 %. I GOT A 141 2/3 CHANCE OF WINNING AT SACRIFICE! SENIOR JOE?THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE AND THEY SPELL DISASTER FOR YOU AT SACRIFICE!

samuelbassett

🚨🚨🚨

Okie1111

His limp got worse with every mistake he made

OKC89ers

Amazing all that scrambling he did between breaks to limp around!

Smokey19mom

Whose coaching this game, you or the players? This falls on Lincoln Riley. This Ohio State fan, thanks you for your stupidity.

[deleted]

FoostersG

Yeah that was wild. There were like 80 seconds left in the game and CW is getting mauled 20 yards behind the LOS

wartortle87

Caleb is a fucking warrior. I appreciated that for several of our sacks the guys went pretty easy on CW. When he would slide nobody was diving in securing the hit. There were plenty, "*I'm here, I've got your wrapped high, the play is over*" sacks. The only big sack I can think of is the one near the end.

esports_consultant

You could tell there was a lot of respect between the players on the two teams.

wartortle87

I thought so as well. When CW took that slide and had 3 dudes right on him but they all pulled up and nobody dove at him, he popped up and patted the safety on the chest. I thought Hubert not using his arms and letting CW bump off him for that massive run was maybe a little much tho 😉

esports_consultant

Well that run is what hobbled CW for the rest of the game so actually 200IQ play.

wartortle87

CW uses *slide* and hurts itself in confusion

YouKilledChurch

No, just because a player says they want to stay in doesn't mean that you should let them when they are clearly hurt.

Conclusion_Fickle

Exactly. Riley is an icky creature.

tvchase

>Williams would not let him take him out That's... really fucking gross actually? You're a grown-ass man paid millions to stand on the sidelines and that's a 20-year old kid with his whole future ahead of him. You call the shots. Make a fucking choice, dude. Imagine Saban or Kirby dropping this quote. You can't because it wouldn't happen.

TheScrobocop

Lincoln didn’t even look him in the eye when he came off at the end. No hugs. No thanks for killing yourself for us. Caleb deserves better.

Dead_Baby_Kicker

Don't forget earlier in the season when Jordan Addison went down he didn't even check on him, seemed more concerned about getting him off the field so he could call another play.

_Reporting

I’m not trying to be overly dramatic but the fact he couldn’t move enough to avoid getting hit hard was a great reason to pull him. That’s just unnecessary

GameLikeADylan

Ala Alabama 2018. “Jalen just didn’t wanna come out…”

Cometguy7

*Lincoln's spine has entered the transfer portal.*

brokentr0jan

Excuses are annoying

BIG_DICK_WHITT

I don’t feel like it’s an excuse. It’s just the truth. It looked like he was in excruciating pain. Cannot believe Lincoln didn’t adjust, though.

GoldandBlue

Sounds like he is trying to say Caleb is a gamer but in actuality it makes Lincoln look really bad.

MustardIsDecent

I think this is what happened. Like Caleb persuaded him he was fine and was adamant he finish the game. Like trying to take the ball from the starting pitcher.

GoldandBlue

OK but still, you have a staff and final say

InSearchOfSerotonin

He’s deflecting blame. It’s typical Lincoln.

brokentr0jan

I agree, CW was clearly not himself. In fact, outside of maybe a couple plays he was terrible. I think if LR knew CW was 50% he should of played Moss and leaned into the run game. Moss is not a bad player and our run game is not bad once it gets going (though it never did today). That’s why I feel it’s an excuse, LR never changed his coaching with his knowledge of CW being 50%

assmanx2x2

Y’all have been clowning OU fans for being salty but this is the LR experience. Rinse/repeat.

BrettSchirley22

If only poor Lincoln had a title that allowed him to make those decisions of who plays

GwentMaster69420

Riley is the coach, it's his job to take him out. This is a very serious situation and a stain on Riley.

AzBuck12977

The transfer portal is letting the inmates run the asylum.

dokocha0216

Fuck that. Your the coach and he isn't entering the portal because you sat him. You gotta know what's best for the players and why the fuck was he in on that last drive??

figool

That's pretty bad actually, its pretty common for star players to want to get back in the game no matter what, even for something a lot more serious than a hammy. It's the coaches responsibility to say no for their own good

jrc1896

Riley should shut up and go make some dry ass brisket.

456647884

Caleb was chasing the Heisman, up until the last minute. But I think it made him look worse, not better. Agreed, Lincoln should have pulled him.

Zealousideal_Plum866

Lincoln, c'mon man. You're the head coach.

CollectionNervous482

**THEN WHY THE FUCK WERE YOU PLAYING HIM** Jesus you guys were our last great hope to lock out Bama and OSU in the playoffs, you over dedicated potato.

Zealousideal_Plum866

We're not getting in, but thank you for thinking of us.

FrostTroll69

Overcooked brisket*

WheatonsGonnaScore

The playoffs are better without Riley losing in the first round again.

weezar5

Bad call Lincoln , smh

ohnoohnoohyeah

And that's why the USC defense missed all those tackles.

trytoholdon

Blah blah blah. Riley chokes leads no matter who the QB is.

McDimps

" but muh Heisman coach "

southsidebrewer

Sounds to me like Williams is the coach if he is dictating injury protocol.

ShadowRealm0043

If he popped his hamstring he’d be screaming and crying on the floor

FrostTroll69

Lincoln is the coach, it's his decision. This gives you insight on the culture at USC.

yumyumapollo

Caleb displaying resilience and having his "Heisman moment" was more important to Lincoln than winning the football game. That's the culture.

Desert_Scorpio

This is the best take here. He really gave more of a shit about trying to get him his heisman rather than a conference championship and a shot at the natty. That's pretty gross if you think about it. This goes for both Riley and Williams, actually.

FrostTroll69

Do you think Caleb wins after that game?

yumyumapollo

I'd still call Caleb the frontrunner, but the field is so vast that a big game by Duggan tomorrow could be all it takes for him to create meaningful momentum.

ArchiCEC

Lincoln is simply not a leader. It was a problem at OU and it’ll continue to be a problem at USC.

StaffPadding

I'm loving the facade falling off. Man isn't cut out to coach a high level team. Not as a head coach at least

jbokwxguy

I got crucified for saying this during the off-season. He can’t discipline / make head coach decisions. Bob was able to handle that before he retired

StaffPadding

He can't coach, especially in big games. He's a development guy and that's ***it***. Every time we got a lead he took his foot off their neck. He's bitch made and won't ever change

codymason84

Holy shit what a soft ass coach lol

The_Soccer_Heretic

So he knowingly played an injured sophomore risking his future income earning potential to choke, again? THAT'S his excuse? Good to know.

Firelord_Crane

So you keep the kid in to preserve his Heisman chances, in the process risking further injury that could damage his career? Bruh

LookatmaBankacount

Lmao it’s literally a job of the coach to come between a player and their pride. Lincoln failed at that in every aspect

StaffPadding

Excuses excuses. Take responsibility for your choices. Bitch made

georgiaboy_11

You’re really enjoying tonight by the looks of your flair

StaffPadding

Honestly I just changed it from transfer portal but my jersey is on the way rn

HateYourTeamLoveMine

Which one?

StaffPadding

I got Rising's

dirgepiper

Noice

HateYourTeamLoveMine

I dont give a shit /s

_Seditious_

It’s truly a glorious night!

GoldandBlue

Is he not the head coach? That's your job to protect your players.

Bruin9098

Lol, a real coach wouldn't leave an injured player in the game to get pounded #ClownCollege

Loganjoh5

Spineless coach that’s your decision to make

mstone7781

Maybe don’t let your QB make that decision when the problem is that major.

Tr0janSword

Wtf? Protect your player. Caleb shouldn’t have been playing. Caleb kept playing bc he knew we had to put up 50 to win this game.

kampfgruppekarl

He was hoping for a Bo Nix matching Heisman moment.

K_dub09

Doubt.

CptnUnderpants0512

Shitty coach if he can’t make a good decision about what’s best for the TEAM and a poor leader if Caleb is too selfish to do what’s best for his TEAM. Both deserve the loss for that.

DaBigJMoney

It was a du,b thing to do and an even dumber thing to say. He could’ve just stopped at “he popped his hammy and balled through it.” Unless his backup is absolutely unready to play I don’t see why you wouldn’t take him out. It wasn’t just that he couldn’t move, his throws were missing the mark.

whateverandeverand

Lol, not buying it.

JohnnyUtah100000

Bull fucking shit. Trying to save face for the heisman.

NerdLawyer55

Lincoln: I tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas

boscodash443

….how are you…the head coach and grown man putting the blame on Caleb Williams here?? “He wouldn’t let me take him out” DOG COME ON

bwolven

Yeah keep him in and lose the game well done

Juicey_J_Hammerman

If only football coaches had the power and authority to Bench players…..

Cacanator

What an idiotic thing to say. Popping your hamstring means you literally cant even walk anymore. So either this is a dumbass excuse/lie(you could have just said he had a hamstring issue, Lincoln), or worse, it's true, and they kept playing the dude despite the fact that he had a really serious injury.

InternationalTax1156

Lincoln Riley is a sociopath and doesn’t care about the well being of his players. He also gets bitched by his own players.

_Seditious_

And Rising got his head blown up. Excuses

Dead_Baby_Kicker

I remember after Rising went down in the Rose Bowl a walk-on came in and threw a DOT for a TD against us. Shame USC doesn't have anyone of that caliber as a backup.

chadsterou

Lmao talking about excuses man. Little ole Lincoln. Your the coach. You decide who plays or sits. You shoulda sat him the second he limp but noooo you let him get pummeled till the last second especially when it was meaningless.

HateYourTeamLoveMine

CHOKELAHOMA, HA! I mean… uh, fuck LA? Idk

MasterGeologist7476

Cap

Jameszhang73

Wth is a popped hamstring

KenTrojan

Likely a tear. "Popped" is what you hear and is one of the telltale signs.

dirgepiper

From experience ( soccer player) it does not feel good. Also. Should never ever run on one. Riley should have benched him.

KenTrojan

Yeah I've torn mine as well. Couldn't imagine continuing to play on it.

Dead_Baby_Kicker

Hopefully they didn't make is worse by keeping him in.

killzone3abc

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what he means by 'popped', but isn't that kind of a serious injury?

kampfgruppekarl

So the coach lost control of his players in their biggest game?

Prestigious-State-15

Lincoln Riley sucks

leejoness

What do you mean “not let”?

Roan_Psychometry

Lincoln Riley lost them this game if this is true…why would you not take him out if he couldn’t move?

snipergrenade

Williams wears the pants in that relationship

bargle0

I’m not sure that makes any better, Lincoln.

jconley4297

lincoln riley: i got bullied by a 20 year old

BuckleUpBuckaroooo

Did the brisket also ask not to be taken out?

pericles123

"would not let" - hey Caleb, sit your ass on the bench - it's not difficult Lincoln.

burywmore

It's a good thing Mr. Riley kept an injured player in there. Imagine if Williams wasn't playing? USC might have lost by more!!

Mefreh

I think if Stetson refused to let Kirby out Kirby would take off his belt and beat him with it right there on the field

[deleted]

LA news headline: Caleb Flexes, Riley Retreats to $17M Home.

Gcarp88

Imagine being paid the big bucks just to be told to stfu by his players

54-2-10

Last game was bad refs. This game Williams was hurt. Usc has the worst luck. Better luck next season.

Lovelylives

Live by the portal die by the portal can’t risk pissing off your fickle players

AzBuck12977

Exactly

dirgepiper

Ummmm. You are the coach? So, you know, bench him? At least for a series and have the trainers evaluate him
