[Postgame Thread] Iowa Defeats Penn State 23-20
By - CFB_Referee
Iowa's punter was the unironic MVP of the game.
This is not the first time
He won this game and Iowa state
There’s a reason hawk fans walk around with shirts saying “punting is winning” with the outline of Australia on them. Tory Taylor is our best player and I’m not even lying lmao
He really melts Kirk's ice cream
Iowa kick guy good
Penn State backup throw guy bad
The best summary I've seen on the last 4 hours.
Leg punting >>> Arm punting
NFL scouts perk up every time Iowa’s offense takes the field because they know in three plays Tory Taylor is going to punt the ball to the moon
To a very specific spot on the moon.
And then just stop. No bounce.
I used to think that was luck. Clearly not
I love a good punter. It's literally the only reason I root for the Seahawks.
Jack fox is the only player making the lions remotely watchable
Hey let’s give some cred to Big Cock Hock while we’re in an Iowa thread please
It’s not his fault, Goff is ass and can’t get him the ball enough
Dickson is simply incredible. The double punt when they played the rams was insane
Tory Taylor will go to New York as a Heisman Finalist. Betting my house on it I don't care I'm over the damn moon right now.
This game was crafted by the football gods to inflict as much suffering on psu fans as possible
The only way to make it worse would've been a guy in a half-Pitt/half-OSU jersey coming by to punch Franklin in the dick.
From the jump it had 2017 OSU game vibes and I still wasn’t prepared for the next 60 minutes
398 Punt yards... Are we sure we cant use that for offense?
I think you just found the most Big Ten stat ever..
Still second to that time Iowa beat Penn State 6-4.
The best offense is a good ~~defense~~ kickboi.
If you don't like literally declining to play offense, you don't like Iowa football
Gotta play to your strengths
It’s probably time to start talking to your kids about undefeated Iowa.
Past time, honestly. It's hard sometimes. Coming from a flair like mine. But, I sat down my daughter today and we talked and she handled it pretty well.
Iowa kneeling with 40 seconds left to get an extra punt in is peak Iowa.
Peak B1G football. Penn State faithful. Congrats on the V
My wife (A&M fan):why are they nealing with so much time left?”
Me: it’s… it’s a B1G thing
With the way Roberson was playing, that was a sure thing, great call.
From my experience, that could be dangerous.
I'm terrified of the rest of our schedule. That's Iowa football
A buddy of mine texted me a congrats on the Hawks winning. Started saying how Iowa has no ranked teams left, and show coast into the championship and/or the playoff. I told him he definitely doesn't follow Iowa football if he thinks they are safe with zero ranked teams.
Dread it. Run from it. [Purdue Pete](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8f/Purdue_Pete_modern.jpg/1920px-Purdue_Pete_modern.jpg) arrives all the same. And now it's here.
Dear God I can feel it. He's gonna bust our balls up. Curse of the 3 continues.
If you don't like kneeling the clock out then punting, you don't like big 10 football
This is the Biggest Ten that ever Bigged tbh
With 8 minutes left...
Iowa beat Penn St several years ago. Penn St got a safety when Iowa hiked it over the punters head. Then Penn St’s only other score was an intentional safety in the fourth quarter by Iowa
Literally only Iowa could engineer a game where a team scores 4 points.
I hope we punt on 3rd some day
I am so glad I witnessed that
The fuck you kneel is up there with the fuck you safety
I’m right there with ya. Also, if I live in Norman now am I owed free beer or do I buy people beer? Bob Stoops is the man
What I've learned is if you yell "BOOMER!" or "Stooooooops" people will love you so do with that as you will
I was baffled for a hot second. Then I remembered it was pure b1g distilled into one possession.
So was making them run 3rd down again after the chop block while still down 4 lmao.
That was Kirk on that ice cream, right there
2nd biggest after the intentional safety
Tory Taylor deserved the curtain call, he almost entirely is the reason Iowa won this game.
5 Punts inside the 10 including a couple inside the 5.
He's the closest thing we have to a Heisman hopeful.
Agreed. Not saying our backup QB would have done much else but constantly starting from our own 5 yard line killed us. Congrats on the win.
Fuck you safeties and now fuck you kneels. This "rivalry" has had it all.
By far my most dreaded game any given season. It's exhausting to watch.
Based on the way Roberson was playing, the only chance Penn State had was blocking that punt
We just saw the invention of the FU victory formation.
That was a serious mood. Talk about being willing to lean on your defense. My goodness. Loving these Hawks
That was very Iowa 6, PSU 4-like of them to do that.
Easy to shit on Roberson, and he deserves some of it, but kid got thrown to the wolves. This is 100% on coaching, both for not having Roberson ready to go in any capacity and for not bringing someone in via the portal. There was plenty of talk in the off-season about needing a back up qb and tapping portal. Unfortunately it materialized at the worst possible time.
Good take right here. Football is a team sport. Franklin looked… ok… but not great. But when you entire offense goes to shit once the backup comes in? Failure on coaching.
Can we all agree that the amount of commercials are getting out of hand? You need 4 hours to watch one game now. It’s ridiculous.
I see you’re not familiar with SEC on CBS. 4 hours is known as a speed run.
Especially the ass hole Uber Eats commericals with the doorbell.
Fuck Uber Eats so much.
Excited for the Spencer Rattler era at Penn State
Tory Taylor (Iowa Punter for those out of the loop) should be your 100% Heisman vote getter.
Man this game was over as soon as their starter got hurt. This backup was not ready for the bright lights
the o-line did him no favors with all those false starts and generally poor protection. feel bad for him, he wasn’t ready and he wasn’t put in a good spot to succeed.
PSU's backup transferred and is now leading Kentucky to a 5-0 start. This kid today was not supposed to be playing yet
Well, at least you get Drew Allar next year. He will be the starter 100%
The only good to come out of this game is that Drew Allar now knows that when Franklin tells him he'll start from Day 1, it's not an idle promise.
Probably not supposed to play ever, most people who are 4th string don’t make it to every play a significant amount.
"why didnt u see the wide open slants in front of u on that 4th down pass?"
"im gona be an accountant man. they told me to run around practice n i study for free, so here i am."
As an accountant I am offended by this comment
At the very least we would have audibled to a safe run play
Cover your assets homie
He just came here to play school!
He should be the 4th string if everything happens the way it was “planned.” Our backup and 3rd stringer transferred out. Feels bad man.
*Spencer Rattler has started following you*
I actually think he'll be a transfer portal candidate to be honest. PSU finally has some QB talent coming and others developing on the roster. I think he's a casualty.
Although I find it hard to blame this on him. I think coaching at PSU (and probably other schools) under develops a lot of backups. PSU doesn't really "win big" against the cupcakes scheduled at the beginning of the season. So backups here don't really get a ton of on-the-field action during games.
I also can't comprehend how CJF didn't adjust the snap cadence given all the miscommunication. Really my only gripe. Not that upset we lost. Figured it would be hard even with a starter.
Still plenty of season to go. PSU still looking prime.
Fumbling that first snap was a bad omen lol
And then Kinnick killed the PSU running game because every time they'd go out for a 5yd gain, they'd get 2 or 3 consecutive false starts.
We haven't had good run game all season
Probably the worst prime time QB performance I’ve ever seen since playoff Joe Webb. It’s hard to watch a guy struggle like that in such a huge game.
For his own mental health, Roberson probably should delete his social media
People shouldn't flame college athletes who have a rough game anyways. I feel like everyone needs to remember that these are just college athletes.
I feel bad for that kid.
I 100% agree, but people still do it
I feel really bad for Sean Clifford. The kid had to sit on the sideline for the whole second half and watch his team play in arguably their biggest game of the season.
It is such a different game if he's out there for the second half
I came away from this feeling like PSU is the better team. That place was rocking and Iowa only won by 3 against a QB that was clearly not ready for prime time.
Iowa kneeling to punt back to that awful PSU offense is one of the most hilariously disrespectful things I’ve ever seen
That was literally what Iowa’s game plan in the famous 6-4 game.
That was even worse cause there was like 8 minutes left lol
Iowa also punted on 4th and 2 from the 50 with like 30 seconds left in the first half. Then called two time outs forcing Penn State to kneel three times to get to half time
I will never say anything bad about Sean Clifford ever again
Up until a few weeks ago I certainly never thought we'd be playing a top 5 team with an elite defense on the road and I would catch myself thinking non ironically how much I really wish Sean Clifford was in there
Edit because words are hard
Top 5 defense. Without Clifford, bottom 50 offense.
Wayyyyy wayyyyyyy lower than that.
That was one of the most toxic gamethreads in a non-rivalry game I've seen here lol
you haven't seen every Georgia game thread ever
Idk how much longer we can call this a non-rivalry game
Don’t fool yourself, Iowa-Penn State is growing into a pretty good rivalry.
Absolutely agree. Recently, between McSorley + Juwan silencing Kinnick in the last-second touchdown and then this, it feels like something more.
This comment just got a false start.
Even the statue is over the line of scrimmage
TIL I could be the backup qb for Penn State
But for real: I think James Franklin should *really* look into that QB depth…
We can't keep depth because they transfer out. Missing Levis right now.
We all know this game would have ended differently if Penn State had won instead of Iowa.
Big if true
THIS IS A BIG TEN RANKED MATCHUP, PLEASE REMEMBER THE TYPICAL RULES IMPLIED BY THE FACT THAT THIS IS A BIG TEN RANKED MATCHUP
1. WHEN THROWING THE BALL, 3 THINGS CAN HAPPEN, TWO OF WHICH ARE BAD
2. WHEN RUNNING THE BALL, THE THREE BAD THINGS THAT HAPPEN WITH THROWING CANNOT HAPPEN
3. DEFENSES WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS
4. PUNTING IS SEXY
kneeling with 2 minutes left up by 3 was a power move if i've ever seen one
That’s 100% the move you make when you’re pretty sure the other team’s QB is a golden retriever
My Big 12 brain was screaming at Ferentz. Between giving the ball back with 40 seconds left and accepting a penalty to replay 3rd down on defense. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
He should be learning but both backups transferred
He’s a RS SO. An upperclassmen 4* should not be that bad.
I feel like we all did
You may not like it but that's what Iowa football looks like.
Watched during a wedding. BAN FALL WEDDINGS!
Holy smokes Roberson is horrible.
Lol. What do people do in the middle of the field storms. Looks like I saw a few people just standing there like “okay, I made it to the middle… now what?”
The one time I did it, that was exactly what it was like.
We all got to the field and were like “Where are our friends?!”
Don’t be too salty PSU fans. Iowa hasn’t allowed an opposing starting quarterback to make it to the end of the game yet this year.
This stat is terrifying.
It's our best offense
Roberson wouldn’t win the starting QB job at Bishop Sycamore.
He'd probably win it at Wisconsin, though.
I hope Clifford gets healthy quick. I think this game goes vastly differently with him in it. Sad to see this, but wish Iowa the best. Kinnick is scary, but especially to be thrown into with little experience.
I know it's just a game, but holy shit Roberson is bad
Roberson might be the worst QB in the B1G in any capacity
Iowa knowing they could just kneel and punt it back with 0 fear of him completing a pass.
Seriously, was pitiful.
Gave me intentional safety vibes lol
I think he was 1 for 4 on throwing a ball that could even be considered catchable.
It had been too long since the "Fuck You safety".
There is a lot of competition for that title.
Dude gives Mertz a run for his money
Lol, I don't know Mertz had a whopping 100 yds and 1 INT against Illinois...
*Petras sits, looking nervous*
See, the secret for Iowa is that ALL our quarterbacks are bad, so we're accustomed to playing with bad QB play.
GG Iowa, defense was up to the task all game. Feel bad for Roberson, coaches left him out to dry and figure out the crowd by himself
Clifford is head and shoulders the best QB we saw this season. Penn State has got a bunch of world beaters on Defense. Shakes me to my core. Hope Clifford is back soon. PSU, go out there and slam the East around like brake parts.
Those kneel downs were so disrespectful lmao
that's the Ferentz brand lmao
Iowa's punter won them the game
As is tradition.
GG Iowa. I'm not gonna pearl clutch over fans booing and stuff, it happens (maybe cus i'm an Eagles fan but I digress). Obviously sucks to see Clifford go out and I think this game goes differently if he doesn't. I'm hoping for a rematch in the B1G championship game
Iowa's Punter should be a Heisman contender after this game.
Worst QB play I've seen in a LONG time. Not a single throw or decision by Roberson made sense, or was even close.
That's horrific even for a backup.
Allar starting next year unless they give Cliff his Covid 6th year
He has eligibility. He will start if he comes back. If not then yeah Allar (the prince who was promised) will be starting
Iowa punting one more time to to try for more turnovers and more chances to kneel.
Tear down the goal posts, you cowards! GG Iowa. Y'all played hard and made it a really hostile environment. Respect.
Really, really disappointed in how Roberson played. He's only a RS freshman but he needs to be ready to go when his number is called. More disappointed at how the offense fell apart after Clifford went out. No one was helping each other out. 8 (9?) false starts from the Oline is absolutely unacceptable, even with how loud Kinnick was. The coaches have to recognize the issue and go to a silent count. Receivers have to help the backup out and he has to hit his targets. Injuries happen and the team cannot be that fragile when they do.
Defense played tough. Good coverage and good tackling right up until the final few minutes. If the offense is halfway competent I don't think Iowa puts up more than ten.
Time to cheer myself up with some joyless murderball, I guess.
USC interview committee: So tell us how you coach and implement silent counts for hostile environments.
James Franklin: *stares blankly, mouth agape*
***Some say Penn State is still out there false starting***
This comment has been flagged for a false start
The last time I had this much hope in an Iowa football team my heart was ripped out by Sparty in Indianapolis. And I am here to announce that I am ready to be hurt again.
Does this mean we’ve broken the curse of the #3 ranking, or are we gonna lose to Purdue?
Bama loses we go to #2 and are safe
Ask and ye shall receive
Well, grats on breaking the 3 curse I guess Iowa.
Corn stonks 📈📈
Exiting game, way to go Iowa
Bunch of coulda, shoulda, wouldas in here. The nerds upset about rushing the field are just embarrassing. It’s College Football, live a little.
Ocean water < The Dead Sea < Bonneville Salt Flats < Sodium Chloride < The Fucking Game Thread
Forgot to put Lot's wife in there.
Iowa will still be number 3 next week, and guess who will be coming to town...
Purdue has beaten Iowa 3 of the last 4 years. No way we should be looking past that game.
Iowa might be #2 😳 Purdue Pete has no powers over #2
We fucked ngl
Bama might lose 🤞
Kind of feel bad for Sean Clifford
I see that today is the day that the universe remembered that Penn State is not allowed to have nice things
Penn state Texas A&M
🤝*losing starting QB with a bad backup*
\+ being a cult
I am once again angry my sister took her husband to this game and not me.
My buddy offered me a ticket yesterday to go with him, but said later that his wife wanted to go after all so took her... I guess a marriage is more important...
Confirmed: Kinnick voodoo defeats #3 curse voodoo.
Petras finished his day on a run of 16/22 for 181 yards and 2 TDs to no ints. Just sayin'.
Still wish dude would step *up* into the pocket instead of running backwards into sacks.
