Monolith M518HT 5.1 THX Compact Certified System https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=41287 Non-affiliate link My favorite speakers I've reviewed this year mainly because of the value proposition. I was impressed at $799. Right now they're $200 off at $599. Buy two of those and you're set for a small room home theater setup. In my case, I have them set up for a Dolby Atmos studio mixing setup. I reviewed them here https://youtu.be/y5O5Rgc0IdU. My review does have an affiliate link, so you don't have to click on that one. They have other stuff on sale too. If you're looking for legit subs, their Monolith stuff is easy to recommend. Full disclosure, they are a channel sponsor, so feel free to disregard anything I've said if you like. They haven't asked me to post this, I'm just pumped about these speakers for folks on a budget. SVS is not a channel sponsor though... SVS has some Black Friday deals also. I can easily recommend most of their stuff. I think their PB1000 Pro has good price/performance. https://svsound.com/products/pb-1000-pro-subwoofer

Other mods, please feel free to delete this if you feel it's inappropriate. Other redditors, please feel free to downvote my post into extinction if you feel it doesn't add value.

slimym

Not adding value to my bank account.

joentell

That's a good one! 😁 Hopefully adding value to your happiness though.

slimym

Always, no regrets.

home_theater_noob

What I like about this Monolith setup is as you want to upgrade, the speakers are really compact so you can repurpose the 5 speakers as heights/surrounds. However, I wish the subwoofer was better. I was looking at this vs a CG23M RSL 3.1 setup and thought the RSL setup with the Speedwoofer would have more longevity.

joentell

Do you have this setup? The sub in a smaller room is pretty effective. For the price, it's probably the best I've found.

home_theater_noob

I haven't heard either system yet, I was mainly going off comparing subwoofer reviews. My RSL set is arriving soon and I'm looking forward to my first HT setup!

joentell

I haven't tried the RSL, but I would assume it would outperform the 8" sub in the M518HT. The specs don't tell the whole story because the amp is very low power for a sub, but it seems they used the right size enclosure, proper port tuning, and a lightweight cone. The combination makes for a good performing sub for smaller spaces.

bgddyphtsz206

What are your thoughts on using the satellites for desktop speakers? Not the full 5.1 but just the satellites paired with a sub.

joentell

I would want a sub. I've tried them and they measure down to 60hz at my desk because of the room boundaries and the reflections, but it's not satisfying from a bass standpoint. If you've watched my reviews, you know I gotta have bass! 😎

bgddyphtsz206

Would definitely have a sub in the mix. Any other satellite sized speakers you would recommend, or anything under 7" tall? Desk space is at a premium... :(

joentell

If you're using a sub, I can easily recommend the THX Satellite at a desk.

JackInTheBell

. I’ve been curious about this set, and appreciate your review. $599 seems like a great deal for the whole package!

Cheezfri

Great reccomendation! I'm looking into buying this. Do you have a receiver you reccomend for this setup?

JamealTheSeal

I'm considering doing a setup with either 4 570s in LR & rear surround, or 2 580s in LR w/ 2 570s for rear. Either will be paired with a svs sv-2000 pro sub and I will probably be using phantom center, since I've seen bad things about the 520c (plus it's $300 rn). This will be my first system, using a Denon s760h AVR. The room is kind of a weird one, it's pretty wide but not nearly as long, and has a really low ceiling. It's probably 20 feet wide, maybe 12 feet front to back, and only 8 feet tall. My whole setup will be centered in the middle facing front/back. On the one hand, I've heard that the 580s are fantastic. On the other hand, I think there might be some benefit to matching all 4 of my speakers, the room is smallish, and I feel like having smaller drivers might help with dialogue coming clearly w/ the phantom center. Thoughts on what would be best for this?

technowar

Are the floor speakers sold individually?

JamealTheSeal

Yes

technowar

Thanks for confirming.

danceswithanxiety

They are a terrific bargain for $240.

really-badadvice

Back in stock. Just snagged a pair.

technowar

Do you need sub for these badbois?

kohltrain108

I just ordered some as well. The studio 580s are also on sale for 299 each. Thinking about snagging those too!

Pokerisfun

What is the best thing to drive these for a living room setup at a reasonable price?

OrangeCarton

Define "reasonable" Onkyo has a 5.2 channel 4K Receiver for $229 right now at best buy There's also the Sony STRDH 190 stereo receiver for $149 If you plan on adding more speakers in the future for a home theater situation go with the Onkyo, you can connect 5 separate speakers with it. Two in front, two surrounds, and a center channel If you only plan to stick with the two front speakers go with the Sony

tfwnowahhabistwaifu

How's a Sabaj stereo amp with these? Looking to get a pair of bookshelves for my TV, but the apartment setup doesn't allow for a sub or surround very effectively, so I was thinking bookshelves and a stereo amp until I move and have more options.

OrangeCarton

I ran the jbl 530s at my desk where I use an smsl sa50 (50Wx2 amplifier) and they sounded fine. Obviously a more powerful amplifier will push these better but if you're on a budget a less powerful amp should do until you can upgrade. Imo, anything more than 20w per channel will be ok and plenty loud for an apartment setup.

Futile_Struggler

Do you know how good is the DAC on that Onkyo or will I have to buy a separate DAC

OrangeCarton

You do not need to buy a separate dac

edgar10456

Crown amplifiers. These things are notoriously power hungry.

LynBizkit

The matching center for these seems to be unavailable anywhere. I currently have a 3.0 cheap Pioneer setup (PIONEER SP-BS22-LR and SP-C22). Would I be right in assuming the JBL pair will be better than my current setup, even without the center channel?

Futile_Struggler

Sold out 😢😢😢😢😢

Cappuccino_Crunch

I'm dipping my toes into this audiophile stuff. I literally bought these after checking out your rec. Now do I need an amp for these? I'll be hooking up to my PC for music mostly.

the-noob-earthling

And a descent DAC too

Cappuccino_Crunch

DAC?

the-noob-earthling

If you use any digital aduio source you need a DAC. This converts the digital data into analog signal, which is usually too weak to drive a chunky speaker. Thats where the AMP comes in. Mobile phones and computers will have a dac inbuilt into them, which is generally not so high quality. But a decent dac will help you decode high bitrate audio. You can read more about bitrate, bit depth.

Cappuccino_Crunch

Nevermind I looked it up. What kind of price tag are we looking at there

polypeptide147

Hold up. The Loxjie A30 that I recommended has a DAC built in. You don’t need a separate one with that.

Cappuccino_Crunch

Oh sweet I'm glad. The price was starting to get out of hand lol

polypeptide147

Haha yeah I get it!

Cappuccino_Crunch

Thanks for the help. I picked that one up.

polypeptide147

Great. You’re welcome!

the-noob-earthling

This Loxjie A30 has everything essential. Sub out is nice to have, i haven't seen it in most at this budget. Despite so many positive does it actually performs well? I'm speculating about distortion given the size and price. If you have used it can you give feedback. I can buy this for my kitchen setup to pair with my old KlipschR41m.

polypeptide147

I don’t have it but [take a look at this](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/loxjie-a30-amplifier-review.17547/)

the-noob-earthling

Thanks this is performing exceptionally well with digital input, i think this would go with my existing KlipschR41m and Belkin airplay. Thanks Mate. 👍

polypeptide147

You’re welcome. Enjoy!

sandiegoite

I was skeptical about buying an amp for my computer desktop because it's another piece of equipment vying for desktop space, but boy is the A30 excellent for the application. I don't know what the endpoint of the dial is because I've never reached it. I should note that I'm powering small, 4 ohm speakers, but it cranks. It had me scratching my head comparing it to the giant size of most amplifiers and receivers. If we can achieve this at this form factor, why isn't anyone trying to shrink those behemoths down a bit?

polypeptide147

Nice! I’m glad you’re liking it. I’d love to try one still some day. As to why they aren’t shrinking them down, it can be quite difficult. [Here’s one of my big boys](https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/tas-194-marantz-pm-11s2-integrated-amplifier/), the Marantz PM-11S2. It’s off the Marantz website now (newer model came out) but if you look at the specs, it’s *58.6 pounds*, at 17.6” by 6.6” by 17.5”. They’ve got a lot packed in there! Ooh I did some more looking, [Crutchfield has a picture of the inside](https://www.crutchfield.com/S-iOrXQcPviOn/p_642PM11S2/Marantz-PM-11S2.html). Lots of stuff in there lol.

Cappuccino_Crunch

Last question I think. What type of speaker wire do I need? I'm a complete noob

polypeptide147

Any. I use amazonbasics. You can get a spool for like $12 and cut and strip it yourself, or buy wires with banana plugs. I like the Micca cables

Cappuccino_Crunch

Thanks

polypeptide147

You’re welcome!

the-noob-earthling

An entry level one for 100bucks.(my first dac was Fosi Q4) it's cheap but still decent. I still love that dac

polypeptide147

Yes you do need an amp. The Loxjie A30 is very popular

Cappuccino_Crunch

Ok. So theoretically this would work on my PC or my TV? I have nothing but the TV speakers so I might throw them in there until I can get something more permanent

polypeptide147

Yupp this should work. As long as your TV has optical, coax, 3.5mm, or RCA outputs you’ll be good. And it’s very likely to have that

Cappuccino_Crunch

Thank you

the-noob-earthling

Rjbell78

The Spirit 4 have a great frequency response for their 240 asking price. Theyre good looking too. I've never listened to them though.

I've ordered them haha I already own a 12.17 Edge

Rjbell78

I'm jealous of all the Reddit black Friday shopping. I must resist, I must resist. I'm trying all my speakers not add to them.

SVS Outlet sale for cyber monday: https://www.svsound.com/collections/outlet-specials * SB-1000 $400 * SB-1000 Pro $500 * PB-1000 $350-$400 * PB-1000 Pro $600 * PB-2000 $600 * PB-2000 Pro $800 /u/DrKenShu /u/uber_ninja I bought the 1000 Pro. Couldn't pass the sale. From my research, the PB 1000 Pro performs close to the now discontinued PB 2000. For <$500, I'd get the PB 1000 (non-pro) but if you can swing it, the 1000 Pro is great

commie_heathen

That's a pretty screaming deal right there

JackInTheBell

I checked right when the sale went live and I got the PB1000 for $399. Was there one for $350??

Exvalidus

Yes I saw one for 350 but it had a considerable blemish on it

picmandan

There were a few with blemishes but it looked like they sold out.

sfdude2222

[music direct](https://www.musicdirect.com/) has some incredible deals going on. They are all either scratch and dent or open box but I wonder if that isn't a work around for minimum advertised price. Wharfedale 240 for $500. Elac Carina bookshelves for $699. Evo 4.2 for $599. And a lot more. I'm so tempted to buy something.

A_Bravo

I just bought some JBL 4309s from them that were “B-Stock” and they arrived looking flawless in a box that had never been opened. Highly recommend!!

sfdude2222

I didn't even see they had JBL... Better go look now. Nice score btw! Edit to say, really nice deal!

I’d been wanting them for months so when I saw them that cheap, I bought them right away. I’ve had [them since last Wednesday](https://i.imgur.com/e03KbdY.jpg) and I’m absolutely loving them!

A_Bravo

Just got some of the 24” ones in and they’re great overall. Shipping was fast, and they’re very solid.

DrKenShu

Basically what my setup is for bookshelf and center. If you find a deal on a solid sub Dm me haha

Exvalidus

I've been eyeing the SVS SB 2000 pro since it's on sale. But it's a little out of budget. Wallet agrees with the SB 1000 Pro but it's not on sale.

DrKenShu

Yeah that’s a bit closer in range right now. Might end up browsing for used if there’s not a lot of good deals

uber_ninja

Lol, this is the exact same setup I am thinking about pulling the trigger on. I'm also stuck on what sub to buy.

DrKenShu

So we’re all in a budget - let’s time share the sub lol

MaxwellDinero

Did you see that they have some on sale in the outlet section? (Slight blemishes in finish)

Exvalidus

I did see those! However since they're not on extra black friday sale (sounds like it's standard outlet pricing), I'll hold off on the Sub until I really need it. Currently using my housemate's sub until Spring. Hopefully a SVS sale will come up by then.

Not Black Friday but Cyber Monday- SVS is having a [Cyber Monday Outlet Blowout Event](https://www.svsound.com/). I just ordered a PB1000 for $399

scorpion-frog

Speedwoofers are excluded sadly

home_theater_noob

Individually speedwoofers are excluded, but speedwoofer combos are included. For example, a CG3M 2.2 setup would be 15% off the whole order, including the 2 speedwoofers.

home_theater_noob

I was looking for a compact 3.1 setup, so I went with a 3xCG23M + speedwoofer for 12.5% off.

terententen

I was looking at the CG3M 3.1 and then adding 2 CG23M L/R down the road but now I'm really considering the CG23M 3.1 and adding the 2 CG3M L/R later or saying heck with it and just going full CG23M 5.1 right now. The sale looks good and really swayed me.

home_theater_noob

If you think you eventually want the additional 2 speakers (CG3M or CG23M) later, I'd add it now. It will bump your whole order to the next tier of percent off and so the incremental cost is low. I went with just the 3.1 because I'm not sure if I want 5.1 and if I do I'll use cheaper speakers as surrounds. Edit: Also, once you add it to your cart, you can make your own bundle with cheaper CG23M but just increasing the qty from 3 to 5. You'll get the bundled price for all 5. With the bundle+black friday, CG23M is only $21 more per speaker than the CG3M.

Faladorable

anyone know if Kanto is gonna do a sale?

Ginny_Frenulum

Looking for some advice and I dont want to make a new thread: Just got a pair of JBL A130's, but still need a receiver. I'm using an LG-C1 and game with a PS5. Just looking for a receiver that is compatible with these devices, trying to get the most bang out of my buck. Budget is $200 - $600. Wdit: adding to this, I might add a subwoofer as well, but not interested in a full home theatre set up at the moment.

polypeptide147

A Denon receiver is probably your best bet. Also, Costco sometimes has good deals on receivers. I’ve never been but it might be worth checking out if you go.

Ginny_Frenulum

Thanks for the reply - any model in particular you could recommend? LG-C1 has the following audio outputs: headphone jack, digital optical, and HDMI e-arc. I'm a total noob when it comes to audio, just not sure which one is ideal.

polypeptide147

Oh wait, the TV has a headphone output? You could just get an Aiyima A07 and an RCA to 3.5mm cable

Ginny_Frenulum

Interesting - that sounds promising! I guess I'm curious what I could be missing out with by not taking advantage of features like Dolby Atmos or HDMI E-arc, and if those features could be in my budget (or if they even appeal to me). I see a lot of receivers advertising 4K and VRR. I have these features on my TV and PS5, but I have no idea how they apply to receivers since VRR and 4K pertain to the quality of the image not the quality of sound.

polypeptide147

If you’re not doing a surround setup, Dolby atmos isn’t going to do anything. Also, if you’re just plugging into the 3.5mm output it’ll give you the same sound (or close to it) as if you use a receiver and run the HDMI through it. If you’re planning on getting a center or surrounds at some point, definitely get a receiver. If you only plan on doing 2.0 you’ll be fine with just an amp

Working on an audio setup and could use some speaker help. This is for a room that's just over 1000 cubic feet. Thoughts on the following? RipInPepz

Any good sub deals? Looking for $500 subs for ~$300 ish. Need to upgrade my crappy dayton 15 inch. it doesnt get low enough for a lot of movies.

joentell

I have yet to find a sub I can easily recommend under a $500 current price. Prices went up after 2020. My requirement is that a sub get to 20hz, and most of the inexpensive ones can really only do 30hz. Big difference when you have a big box dedicated to low frequencies. The closest thing is that Monolith THX 8" Sub at $279, but even that can only get down to 24hz and made for smaller spaces. Disclosure: Monolith is a channel sponsor of mine, but my opinions are my own. The other one I heard good things about is the RSL Speed woofer, but I've never reviewed it. Sometimes SVS has their older PB1000 and SB1000 (non-pro versions) on sale for around $500, but it's discontinued and sometimes shows up in their outlets section. I usually recommend saving up or just splurging on something that can get down to 20hz. You won't regret it.

RipInPepz

With current sales + discount code I could get the monolith m10 v2 for under $500, it would be $470. I’d be willing to bump up my budget. Would you recommend it?

joentell

I have the original Monolith M10,which was sent to me free for review, and is still in my system. It definitely digs deep but it hits its limits in my large 20x20x9ft garage/home theater space. The V2 is mostly a cosmetic change with minor improvements in response, but probably not worth mentioning. I also have a SVS PB1000 Pro, sent to me free for review, and it is also on the other corner of my system. The PB1000 Pro is slightly larger, but the M10 with it's HDF vs MDF is heavier by a good amount. They perform very similarly with the SVS being able to play slightly louder prior to hitting excursion limits. The SVS app is kinda handy too. The issue with having physical knobs on the back is if you have multiple subs dialed in, accidentally knocking one of the dials means you really should recalibrate. Hope that helps. Also, some people like the Emotiva sub, but I haven't tried it. If you want to go super budget, Erin's Audio Corner reviewed a bunch of budget subs and the Infinity one did well and surprisingly, the Jamo was ok for the price also.

RipInPepz

Thanks a lot for all your efforts. I think I can swing the m10. I was thinking about the m12 for $670 after discounts, ($730 after tax) and I just can’t justify with all the other stuff I’ve bought for Black Friday so far.

joentell

What size is your room? How far will the sub be? How loud do you want to listen? Those are the factors to consider.

It’s about 15x15x8. Sub will be about 9ft from the couch. I like to listen to movies on the louder end. I like to feel like I’m in the theater, but I bit less loud/harsh. Idk if this helps but on my denim x1700h I normally choose a volume of 65. The fronts are jbl 590s and the center is an emotive c2

joentell

If you ever decide to change your volume setting to dB, it's helpful because it tells you the volume relative to reference 0dB. In any case, if you were to go by THX's recommendation, anything with a Select certification is suitable for a room your size and up to 2000 cu/ft and up to a viewing distance of 10ft. The M10 is certified Select. Any larger or further, and you might want to step up to the M12. A lot of folks say THX certification is worthless, but they do have requirements based on frequency response, SPL, and maximum distortion limits. But, companies do have to pay for that stamp of approval. I don't think they can "just" pay though. The product has to meet requirements. I personally think 2 x M10's would sound pretty impressive. But once you get used to bass, you always want more. 😁 You have to know yourself. Choose wisely.

RipInPepz

Thank you!!! I can get the m10 now and another one next year. That should be better than one m12

RipInPepz

Is it safe to assume that if I need to set my bass to the max on both my AVR and the gain knob on the monolith sub, that I got a dud?

smackdaddies

Monoprice 15% off site - BF15 And there are no $500 subs for $300

RipInPepz

That’s nice that it stacks with the current sub discounts! Thanks! Do you own any of these? Gonna be deciding between the m10 and m12.

polypeptide147

RSL and SVS have deals. I don’t think you’ll get $300 on a $500 sub though unfortunately. RSL had them for $399 it seems.

herr_oyster

I got a JBL 550p for 189 either last year or the year before. Love it for music. Keep an eye out.

NinoZachetti

RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII are back in stock, I would jump on one before they're sold out (again): https://rslspeakers.com/products/speedwoofer-10s-mkii/

RipInPepz

Ended up with a monolith m10 v2 for $470! Hopefully I made the right choice.

EphemeralPizzaSlice

Do you know if I could use one of these with my current receiver? Yamaha R-S202BL. I’ve essentially only got speaker level out. I am testing out a sub right now that seems to work ok by taking input from the receiver, and passes its output to my speakers, all speaker wire.

polypeptide147

[RSL speakers and sub up to 20% off](https://rslspeakers.com/promotion/). I highly recommend a 2.1 system from them.

I saw that Amazon.ca has the Audiolab 6000N Play Wireless Streaming Player (black) on sale for $299 ($499 - $200 coupon). Also, there's a single pair of ELAC Debut Prima 5.25" bookshelf speakers (DBP5B) available for $249.99

Is 319 a good deal for the Kanto YU 4? I really like the way they look and i hear they're good and they look convenient. Just wondering if i can do better for the money though? Edit: never mind, found one for 250 with the ebay discount code! Here another link to one thats almost as discounted, should be 270 if you use the discount code TURKEY TEN https://www.ebay.com/itm/155234524016?epid=6012044822&hash=item2424b2db70:g:dBcAAOSwhAJjYUIr. the seller World Wide Stereo Outlet seems to be a very well reputed speaker store with like 50k sales.

UnderwaterB0i

I just got the passive yu6 for 126 shipped from the same place, stupid good deals out there right now.

ete203

Looks like those are gone. I would have bought them too! Had an Amazon warehouse set but one speaker crackled. Great sounding speakers!

Is it likely the [Genelec 8010a's](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/8010A--genelec-8010a-3-inch-powered-studio-monitor) go on sale? Or do they not usually go on sale?

FYI, Schiit is having a sale for BF and some closeout items. Just picked up a Modi 3e DAC and a Loki on sale. https://www.schiit.com/b-stocks

Any recommendations on a upgrade for my setup that's on sale? I mainly listen to female vocal music, and currently run Kanto Yu2 + Sub8. Haven't seen to many good deals on amazon for bfriday/cyber monday so far outside of the edifiers which I think is more of a sidegrade. Budget is around $500 but I can squeeze more if it's worth it.

spiderman1993

Any headphones deals? I wanna upgrade my SHP9500s to some better ones. Eyeing the beyer dynamic 900 pro but $250 is kinda steep. Any equally better upgrades for $150-$200?

herr_oyster

Drop HD6XX for $200 right now. End of story. You will probably want an amp eventually.

spiderman1993

I can get an amp for free so whatcha think

herr_oyster

I think you should do it, obviously. I'm not a headphone expert but I have both the shp9500 and the hd6XX, and, it's a big upgrade.

spiderman1993

Thanks. I saw it was $180 last year and it’s bugging me it’s not gonna dropcbelow $200 ):

SignoDX

You just missed it. Was 180 two days ago.
