I would think Jonathan remove himself posting much on his social media once it was announced he and Simone are protagonist. There was and is still a lot of hate towards them. And for both Simone and Jonathan it seems mostly at this point just a vehicle to promote their projects and photoshoots.
They received a lot of hate when the casting of Simone was announced some racists of this show can 't stand to see a beautiful strong dark skin woman like lead character and a man who is not straight
and it's not just that, the constant harassing of writers and actors over season 3 is probably part of it too... It's so invasive to their personal lives... Like tagging them on instagram comments and on twitter... I'm assuming some of these people are kids and teenagers tho... Also, SA gets a lot of hate for her acting and CC gets hate for playing an "annoying" character... people seriously need to chill...
>I'm assuming some of these people are kids and teenagers
You'd be surprised by how many middle aged white women have been hating on Simone Ashley on Twitter. I don't use Facebook that much, but I saw a lot of hate there too. It's sadly not just kids and teenagers.
Of course. In season 1, it was easy to self insert and fantasize (when they were really fetishizing) Rege, but they can't do it when the female lead is a dark skinned woman.
I am not attacking RJP, I like RJP and I'm sure normal RJP fans don't like this pathetic shit those women are doing. I hate this competition between the actors and how the Duke gets brought up randomly when they are talking about S2 or just any comparisons, I'm just tired.
I didn't say you were attacking him. I just noted that there is a lot of hate directed at him also.
And I'm sure normal fans of the individuals who are attacking him don't like the hate that is directed at him either.
I just wish people would stop attacking the actors. All of them.
Yeah, there's a lot of hate for him, but I don't get why people are still so fixated on him since he's not a part of the cast anymore. Well, I have an idea, but not gonna get into that, I'm just tired of it. I have never really been part of a fandom before and I'm not sure what it means exactly to be part of a fandom. I just love the show and I will never understand this toxic fandom, it's like they prefer putting others down over uplifting their favourites.
I'm aware of the misogyny that is prevalent in this sub, but this post was not specifically about the issues related to the actresses. If it was I doubt that OP would've mentioned JB.
It's bad on Facebook. So many white "ladies" criticizing Simone for anything. It got better when fans of S2 joined the Bridgerton group but those people are still there.
I'm not in any Bridgerton fan groups, but I've seen comments on Buzzfeed articles about the show and the people in the comments hating S2 and insulting the leads were mostly middle aged white women.
I've seen people hate on pretty much every thing about her. From her face, her makeup, her body, her acting, her voice, her chemistry with Jonathan Bailey, etc. And really pathetic insults, things you'd expect from immature teenagers, but nope, they were grown women in their 40s and 50s.
I think its for the best. I feel like Jonathan doesnt like that his sexuality keeps being brought up surrounding his acting. And both he and Simone seem to be very private people.
While fans might enjoy actors interacting with fans. Fans love to blur the lines too much and go into extreme. I have seen fans basically stalk actors and show up at their home. In this time i think its smart protecting your privacy.
Yeah, he doesnāt come off as someone that seeks fame and all that comes with it. Iām sure he wouldnāt have agreed to šās schedule if he was after the publicity and fame bridgerton s2 would bring.
Thatās so gross. It used to be that fans could show up at movie premieres, wait politely behind the velvet ropes and cheer for their favorites when they walked the red carpet.
A friend of mine did that at the NY premiere for Love Actually. That film had so many actors from Jane Austen films, so it was such an exciting evening for NY Janeites. Colin Firth walked over to the sidelines to greet fans and was very dashing and friendly, signing autographs and posing for pictures. My friend said to him, paraphrasing Bridget Jones: āWait a minute... nice boys don't smile like that.ā And Firth replied, āOh yes they fucking do.ā That probably wouldnāt happen now.
They deleted their Twitter accounts because they were harassed by toxic fans. This fandom is extremely toxic and constantly harass and insult people involved with the show.
and there's so much entitlement, about everything, especially when the actors don't do press/interviews . like it's their personal lives, and personal decisions that they and their agents make with the company they work for. Leave them be!
Yup, they can't comprehend that the actors might not wanna do something and it automatically means they've been snubbed or whatever. I've also seen people hating on Jonathan Bailey's play because he can't do promo cause of it. Pretty pathetic stuff.
this is the case with SM in general.
there are rotten apples in every fandom, it's not exclusive to this show.
newer actors/celebs end up learning this the hard way. they engage their fans, then realize it's overwhelming to deal with the entitlement/negativity.
Social media is great when you want to promote something, but the negativity is toxic. Thereās a line most celebrities reach when the need for promotion is outweighed by negative emotional cost. Stuff is shut down, turned over to a social media manager, and engagement is over.
I ran the social media accounts for several musical artists after the negativity got to them. One mate of mine wrote and released a song a few years ago. He was so excited for the midnight release on iTunes and we had a little party going waiting for midnight. As soon as it hit he went to Twitter and a bunch of Idiots spammed him saying itās sucked, he should give up, take a vow of silence. It was horrible. Two minutes on social media and his happiness was sucked dry and he just went to bed. The song did very well, topping the genre chart, but that was the last time he ever touched Twitter or any other social media. Even people with the blue check marks have feelings, can get hurt and self-conscious, or times they feel like talentless hacks.
When Nicola and Luke Newton get their seasons they will be too busy to sit scrolling on their phones. Luke Thompson is the smart one of the bunch and never started.
Yeah I saw this video clip of an interviewer asking Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen why theyāre not on social media and Lizzie was just āI tried it and itās terribleā. Must be damaging on oneās mental well being when anonymous accounts feel that theyāre entitled to give their obnoxious opinions of you and your art.
Charithra left Twitter after the character posters were revealed early March. The fans on Twitter had a meltdown because Edwina was in the poster with Anthony and Kate. Some fans even photoshopped her out. Sheās spoken about it here:
Fans are unhinged. Some accounts with thousands of followers got called out and now they just donāt even use Charithraās name at all, they just say āHERā when talking about her. Itās so unbelievably passive aggressive, but at least they canāt bombard her mentions anymore and she canāt see the hate anyway.
Donāt know the specifics about the Twitter situation cause I wasnāt that active at the time and I tend not to follow fandom drama, but Iām pretty sure Jonny disabled his instagram comments after s2 was announced for a while and I remember a lot of spiteful comments under his posts but Iām not sure itās related š¤·š»āāļø
Iām not sure about it cause he didnāt say anything and just disabled the comments but the timing was kinda telling. He and Simone got a lot of hate and people like to forget about it it seems to me.
Yes I know but now it seems to me itās always from the same group of people and Iāve kinda learned to ignore it. I feel theyāre just asking for attention so later they can play the victims. The majority of the fans love Jonny and Simone so thatās all that matters. Haters wonāt go away
This fandom is very entitled and toxic. After the first character posters were released, Kanthony fans got mad because Kate and Anthony did not get a couple poster and were instead on posters with Edwina. The fandom started spiraling from there with fears of the love triangle and Kanthony not being promoted enough to their desires. This in turn made people complain about Edwinas character taking the spotlight and some even edited the posters to erase Edwina with captions that the posters were āfixedā.
Well Charithra was active on Twitter and saw all the negativity concerning her character. What should have been a happy day was ruined and she left twitter. Nicola took a Twitter break after that drama too, probably to not be bombarded with too many questions about the upcoming season since she developed a close relationship with fans that now felt entitled to more of her attention. Also there were some fans that were upset that Lady Whistledown/Penelope is a big part of the Bridgerton story when it should be just the main couple getting the attention.
Fans are STILL complaining about how much Charithra is involved even though itās abundantly clear Charithra hasnāt done any Bridgerton centered stuff in WEEKS; all her promo was done at the same time as the other cast members and thatās been that. Meanwhile Simone has been carrying the brunt of the promotion work (as she should because sheās the lead.) Itās been crazy to watch.
To hate and complain about Charithra getting opportunities is such nonsense. There is absolutely no need to put her down just to uplift Simone, who would 100% not approve of such behavior.
I think ultimately one of the āproblemsā is Jonathan has been kinda MIA for a lot of the promo work, but like⦠thatās not Charithraās fault and itās frankly not the showās fault either. Heās been doing a play for months and will be until June. Thereās nothing that can be done, Iām sure if he was available it would be different but maybe he didnāt *want* to be available. Jonathan seems really, really private.
it's entirely possible that he wanted to step back a little to avoid being overwhelmed - he's talked about it before, about being private but when 82 million people are watching your show in 24 hours there's only so much you can do to avoid overexposure. that said, i think he's still been doing a decent amount of promo and with rehearsals for his play it must have been exhausting.
also i think the overlap between s2 promo and his play could have been due to covid delays and all the changing covid rules in the UK too
I think it's good that Nicola left twitter. She was the cast member who interacted with fans the most and at some point it started getting very weird with people feeling entitled and wanting to be acknowledged by her at any cost.
I'm of the opinion that "famous" people should keep their distance from "fans" because certain people do not understand boundaries.
most actors/actresses will have their professional accounts to promote projects.
then they have their private accounts for their family/friends.
some have ownership of their account but rarely post/they limit their engagement bc of negativity.
lesser known actors/actresses eventually learn about the toxicity and follow this protocol of handing someone else control of their SM accounts, keeping private ones for themselves. i imagine some of them are switching over to this so that they're ready when their season comes.
it's a hard lesson for sure. the supporting cast (the younger ones) are probably learning about this now, finding solutions for it. deleting an account is the best way to start fresh.
People are unhinged, toxic, and donāt understand boundaries.. not to mention some probably have severe problems. Luke T. is very smart for not engaging at all.
I only use my private Instagram where my name isnāt even on it, to share with friends and family these days. In the past, I got rape threats, people wishing me death, and constant harassments. It got very dark very fast and Iām not even famous.
I know a guy whose real life girlfriend was getting harassed online that turned into stalking. Someone figured out where she lived, stalked her, took photos of her going places and then sent it to her on FB with some disturbing comments, so police had to get involved.
People have mentioned that CC and Nicola both either took breaks from twitter or went off twitter entirely because of the fan hate. I can imagine it's true, but don't know specifics myself... It's hardly surprising too that SA and Rege don't seem to run their instagram accounts, at least not on their own because some of the fans can be really crazy and mean...
First of all bridgerton is a show where you just cannot hate any character and even if some people do hate them then apply some sense and stop hating actors like wtf you think going to happen.. Nicola is not pen she plays pen.. Charithra is not edwina she plays edwina.. Fucking stupid
Why is it always girls hating on girls! Like come on. We need to support one another. Why are ladies always so salty and like to beef all the dam time.
Damn!, I didn't there were that much of hate from people, I mean, I'm not on twitter, but I always thought there were some "normal" crazy fans, but that they were few - now this all sound serious with these crazy people!
It reminds me of what Mondrich said to the Duke in season 1 after his last fight, āyouāre angry but not with meā.
Same thing. These people are hate filled but not with the actors. Itās just displaced hatred. Ignore those people. Donāt engage with them.
People on Twitter are special. I don't look at book/tv stuff there but on occasion have a peek at PL football tweets. If the Bridgerton fandom is like that then it's good that the actors decided to stay off it.

Just yesterday I saw one fetishizing Rege and attacking Simone.
Yup, so many loooove RJP, but hate her because they can't self-insert and imagine they are getting fucked by him since she's not white I guess.
Of course. In season 1, it was easy to self insert and fantasize (when they were really fetishizing) Rege, but they can't do it when the female lead is a dark skinned woman.

I think you missed a crucial point they were making there. It's not that loving Rege is bad, it's that there is some gender selective racism going on.
I'm aware of the misogyny that is prevalent in this sub, but this post was not specifically about the issues related to the actresses. If it was I doubt that OP would've mentioned JB.
this fandom is full of grown women who hate the females characters especially the ones of color like Marina ,Kate

Don't they have anything better to do?
I see this a lot in Austen fandom too. Grown women can be worse than teenagers honestly. It's embarrassing.
Those are usually the worst! š
Iām over a year late but Iām ready to throw hands
wow I had no idea JB is not straight! he and Simone have amazing on-screen chemistry
It's true both did a very good job with the characters and their chemistry was intense
Thatās sad š

A lot of people have abandoned Twitter because it can get quite toxic.
