Nothing in pancakes (flour, milk, eggs, baking powder, maybe sugar and salt) is a listeria risk, and even if you got a weird experimental pancake with prepackaged lettuce or deli meats in it, it would be cooked, killing the bacteria. Undercooked eggs have like a 1 in 30,000 risk of salmonella contamination, but a) that's wicked low to start, and b) you could just cut into the pancake before you eat it. If it's liquid inside, do not eat. Done.

kadk216

Raw flour can contain listeria and other bacteria but as long as people don’t eat raw dough or raw uncooked flour they should be good.

HoneyPops08

And if it’s prepped and set aside for a while?

kadk216

It’s completely safe once cooked, I wouldn’t worry about it at all!

HoneyPops08

Okay thanks!

HoneyPops08

The thing is, they are not like American pancakes so not thick they are like this: https://www.bofrost.be/shop/brood-gebak/gebak-desserts/pannenkoeken-natuur.html I read when the dough is made and set aside for a while it’s a risk? I’m a FTM and really paranoid for things like this lol

whereforetodover

Not thick is even better, it will cook through more thoroughly.

HoneyPops08

I’m so paranoid god damnit. What if they don’t cook it through till the center? I think I’m just gonna take it over there and bake them myself 😂

whereforetodover

Just cut it open to check if it's liquid inside! This is a deeply solvable problem ha ha. Also something like 1600 people a year out of 8 billion get listeria. It's bad if you get it but the odds of a listeria outbreak happening at all near you, happening to affect the specific ingredients of your pancake, and also your pancake not being cooked through, and also you not noticing the middle of your pancake is gooey? The risk could not be lower!!!

HoneyPops08

Okay thanks!

Certain-Beyond673

If they don't cook their food properly why would they still be at the festival? People would get sick or complain and they would be removed.

HoneyPops08

I’m just thinking about ‘what if’ Look I get your point it’s just hard for me as this is the first time I’m pregnant and I wanne do it good that’s all.. I don’t get the downvotes I thought i could speak free at this sub and people would get it if there’s a little scare with some persons

Certain-Beyond673

I think it's more that people have answered your what if with totally valid answers and you seem to not be taking them because.you've worked yourself up with anxiety. It makes sense to be cautious but when everyone explains it's okay, you have to at a certain point accept that it's fine. There's lots of what ifs but if you play the what if game with everything you'll drive yourself crazy. And I mean it's a sub full of different kinds of people. Some people will downvote. It's just a fact of reddit don't take it personally, be more invested in the comments and people who are *trying* to help you.

Sufficient_Dingo_463

It's impossible for these to be raw in the middle they are basically a slightly hartier crepe. They are better fresh so even if they are cooked ahead of time I can't see them not tossing them in a pan for a minute just to warm up. But even so this is a safe food. Food is on the whole safe to eat when you are pregnant. And this is not a particularly large listeria risk. Eat, enjoy.

HoneyPops08

I read it isn’t long enough cooked/warmed up for the listeria bacterie to be death? Or is this only with the packaged one? Sorry for my over worries!

Sufficient_Dingo_463

Listeria takes a long time to grow and does best at fridge temp. And it is very uncommon. The cooked pancakes will be fine. If you were going to a soft unpasteurized cheese festival I would worry for you bit the pancakes as honesty not something to worry about.

Bonkisqueen

Eat the pancakes!!

HoneyPops08

I’m so paranoid 😭

DaisyBluebelle

Are they cooked all the way through?

HoneyPops08

I don’t know! It’s this weekend we’re going and I don’t know if there’s something else I can eat

Whole_Form9006

Just eat them

wigglemeth1s

Honestly from your responses to all the comments telling you it’s safe it sounds like you shouldn’t eat the pancakes. I would consider a pancake festival extremely low risk but you seem to have convinced yourself that it’s not, and there’s no point in eating something if you’re going to be freaking out about it rather than enjoying it. Just skip the event or eat before you go and maybe look into getting some help for your anxiety.

Certain-Beyond673

Yeah it's a festival. There are rules about how they have to cook stuff, ie all the way through, to be invited there I imagine. Once food is cooked the risk of listeria is so low it's almost non existent. If OP is worrying about pancakes it would be worth it to look into some options to deal with the anxiety. Once again, they are pancakes, everyone is telling you that you'll be fine and you're grilling everyone like they're doctors or work the booths/trucks . If you don't feel safe eating a fully cooked pancake then just don't go. But that level of paranoia isn't good for you, it creates anxiety you'll carry through your whole pregnancy and that isn't good stress to have for you or the baby.

HoneyPops08

It’s just because it’s my first pregnancy I’m a ‘what if’ thinker not healthy I know

Certain-Beyond673

I understand. But when you come to a group asking advice and everyone tells you that you're fine, you have to just come to terms with the fact that what you're feeling is anxiety and not based in fact anymore. More foods are going to appear, you will probably at some point eat or drink something you hadn't realized you shouldn't, it's just part of it all. You just have to trust you're doing the best you can. You have 29 more weeks to go, at least, you don't want to spend most of it paranoid rather than enjoying the growth and progress of your first child. And I'm saying this as a FTM at 16w myself. Enjoy the things you can enjoy, don't turn everything into "but what if it could hurt the bay?"

HoneyPops08

You’re right thanks

HoneyPops08

I’m just thinking about the worst that could happen lol we’re going with my family who I don’t see that much so I wanne go

wigglemeth1s

“I’m just thinking about the worst thing that could happen” sounds like classic anxiety, especially when multiple people are telling you the worst thing won’t happen and you’re still insisting that it will. A lot of the people on this sub are first time moms, including myself, and we are all concerned about doing something that could harm our babies. But part of making responsible decisions for yourself and your baby is being rational about what the risks actually are. Listeria is extremely rare, even in the “higher risk” foods that pregnant women are advised to avoid, and it’s even rarer in cooked foods like pancakes. You are more likely to get into a car accident on your way to the festival than to contract listeria from a pancake once you’re there, but you’re still fixating on the pancake. That is not healthy thinking, and it’s not as normal as you seem to believe it is for FTMs to feel that way, which is why I suggested seeking help for your anxiety. In the meantime, you’ve gotten plenty of reassurance and are still not satisfied, so it seems like you won’t be able to eat the pancakes without panicking about it. So just go to the event with your family but eat beforehand and skip the pancakes.

Feeling-Peanut-5415

You CAN get listeria from almost anything, but are very unlikely to. IMO, just live your life (of course avoid things that definitely contain toxins to the fetus, like alcohol and smoking).

cakedoughnuts

I say this so gently and with compassion: babe, you are catastrophizing. Eat the pancakes, both you and baby will be fine!

pupsmcgoo

Yum I want to go to a pancake festival

HoneyPops08

Me too! I’m really like oh god I really want this for weeks now but I’m soooo scared. I’m only 11,5 weeks now and a FTM so it’s double for me lol

Nibbles928

Bring snacks so that you have something to eat if, worst case scenario, you're not comfortable eating the food. If it were me I'd eat the dang pancakes

HoneyPops08

Thanks!

HoneyPops08

I wanne say thanks to you all. I know I’m a bit dramatic over this and I REALLY wanne eat the pancakes so I will I’m just overthinking a lot and I’m sorry for that! Thanks for all your replies!
