What is a fact that sounds fake but is real?

GuyWhoLikesTurtles

It took over 300 years for giant tortoises to get their scientific name. This is because they were so delicious, that on the way back on the ship to Europe, the crew had eaten them all. Written accounts compare the taste to chicken, beef, butter etc. and emphasise how much better they are than all of these things

Chinaski_616

'Just one more, we can go back sir'

Jack1715

They used to strap them together

WimbleWimble

Darwin ate the very last turtle onboard when they were in sight of Englands ports.

Sharks have been around longer than trees.

tim_tweets

Sharks have been around longer than Saturn has had rings.

Irving Berlin (who wrote God Bless America, White Christmas, Puttin' on the Ritz among many others) lived long enough to see his early work go out of copyright. Copyright lasted 75 years at the time - Berlin died aged 101. Despite being one of the 20th century's most successful songwriters he could barely read music (although he got better in later years), and could only play the piano in one tonal centre (Gb major)

lostliner2

Interesting! He's a legendary tho..

__Dawn__Amber__

Suicide bombers are a lot easier to identify post-mortem than you’d expect. This is because the blast from the suicide belt hits the base of the head in such a way that the head pops off like a cork. Investigators therefore have a relatively intact head to ID.

JustMechanic4933

Gross and undeserving.

AblazeMartinez

The Holy Roman Empire still existed when the US was founded.

thatasshole_stress

Not sure if you are mixing the Roman Empire into the Holy Roman Empire bc they are different. So it’s not really that hard to believe. HRE was founded ~800 years before the US was founded.

Jack1715

And the eastern Roman Empire was technically still around when the new world was discovered I think

Hellothere6545

Gender reveal parties kill more people in the US than sharks per year.

JonyTheCool1234

How on earth is that true. What do you do in those parties?

Hellothere6545

Some people have the bright idea to put explosives and use them to fire blue or pink chemicals to show the gender. These explosions have killed 4 people this year so far (sharks deaths in the us average 1-2 people per year).

Lima-14

The one that caused the massive wildfires in CA a few years back prob has the majority of the deaths for its year. Not sure about other years

asifbymagnets

I think this is all down to that one party that started a wildfire. The stats are skewed by that.

deadPanSoup

Gender Reveal Party Georg is an outlier and should not have been counted

Malaeveolent_Bunny

Start forest fires

WimbleWimble

People have set off large explosives/grenades etc to do "gender reveals"....these are stupid stupid people who sometimes kill themselves AND the baby

corbomitey

The family that held the first general reveal party is very against them in general, and the baby is now a gnc kid! That first party, for them, was less about gender and more about the fact that they lost several pregnancies before they made it to 20 weeks when they generally determine gender, so it was a way to celebrate that milestone.

Australia is almost the same size as Europe. I feel like a lot of people think Europe is bigger than it is.

JadaLovelace

I always thought australia was bigger than europe

somewhsome

I'm surprised Australia is not bigger.

[deleted]

Australia is slightly smaller than the continental US. Europe is about 3 million km2 larger than Australia. But notably, Europe is smaller than Antarctica and even South America, and Canada is only slightly smaller than Europe. Part of what makes Europe feel bigger is its population. The US, Canada, South America, and Australia all have large swaths of land that are largely uninhabitable.

Jack1715

What’s crazy is England can fit in Australia something like 17 times over and they still have a much bigger population. And California alone has more people then our whole country

Sir Isaac newton broke a friendship off with a friend because the friend said something sexual about a female

markste4321

"I'd be rather partial to feasting on her thrupenny bits"

devhashtag

Wasn't he an ultra virgin or something?

HoochRevoo

It is believed he died a virgin and had no interest in women. So it could have just been he had no interest in sex or the topic of it disgusted him, but could have also been he thought his friend was perverted as well

devhashtag

Perhaps he was just asexual

dahaka1706

Or he was into tentacles but never saw them

WimbleWimble

Like the apple, Sir Newton, her plump buttocks can accelerate towards my face at 32 feet per second per second.

snapwillow

Can't tell if Isaac was being a prude or if the thing that was said was inappropriate and the friend was being a creep. More information is needed.

DaveSW777

Canada is south of Detroit.

Haggis_with_Ketchup

The southernmost point in Canada (Point Pelee) is south of multiple US states.

DaveSW777

Yeah, but specifically in Detroit, there's a bridge to Canada. It goes south to get to Canada.

Aussieboi393

Australia exports sand and camels to the middle east.

Jack1715

This is true there are somewhere around 2 million feral camels in the outback and besides humans they have basically no predators

SingleFunction156

In 2007 a paraglider got trapped in the updraft of two joining thunderstorms and was lifted to an altitude of 33,000 feet. She landed over three hours later about sixty kilometers north of her starting position having survived extreme cold, lightning and lack of oxygen.

I remember watching a YouTube video about this a while back and was surprised that she was able to not only survive but make a full recovery

Shot_Iron_2575

You were once the youngest person on earth...

tropicalzhu

Not eating for the rest of your life is completely possible.

GreatBigWhore

Tigress from The Kungfu Panda already tried that…

sugarplump07

Of course it is. Your life will last for about 8 to 21 days without food and water.

Stonedinsolitude

It is quite literally no possible, unless you’re making a joke saying you’ll starve. You can survive for about 3months on nutrient water, then your organs start to turn to mush from disuse

Cakethepancake

Yes.. so then you'd die... so you didn't eat for the rest of your life. Lol the statement didn't say how youd die or how long you'd live 😂

tropicalzhu

It is a joke.

Fliibl

There’s sugar in everything(that is healthy for you)

Rasheverak

The problem is when it's processed and added to other food in copious amounts.

Haggis_with_Ketchup

You can die from drinking too much water

devhashtag

That's not surprising, almost anything can kill you (or at least cause severe harm) if you consume too much of it

Badandy469

It's called water toxicity isn't it or am I thinking of the wrong term?

Haggis_with_Ketchup

Correct. Also called water toxemia.

Badandy469

I'm not a medical expert but thought I remembered the right medical term. Seems odd that while we need water to survive that too much is deadly even though it isn't salt water

Haggis_with_Ketchup

Right? It does sound fake and counterintuitive

Badandy469

Exactly. "You need to drink water so you don't die. But don't drink too much or you'll die" It makes you stop and think "WTF, are you serious?"

Haggis_with_Ketchup

I guess its the same with salt, vitamins, dietary fat. You need all of these in minimum amounts.

Badandy469

Exactly. You can give up smoking, alcohol and drugs. But you need food to survive but too much of the wrong foods will do you in. The human body is weird how it works sometimes

StoicDonkey

And a symptom of dying from too much water is being extremely thirsty. The exessive amounts of water in your body dissolves the minerals and nutrients necessary for the body to funktion and the body believes there aren't enough. The nutrients are there, the concentration is too low, though.

If you inject a pregnant woman's urine into a female African clawed frog, the frog will ovulate and lay eggs within a day. It sounds exactly like a witchcraft recipe, but it works and it was used as a pregnancy test until the 1960s.

AminoKing

The most fascinating part of this is - who the hell figured it out to begin with?

DryPencil_BluntPen

When you recall a memory you’re not remembering the exact moment said memory occurred, but actually the last time you recalled that memory.

JadaLovelace

I want to hear more about this. What is the logic behind it and do you have sources?

EIephants

One of my psych professors in college described it like this: think about memories as a soft, sensitive clay sculpture in a box. Every time you take it out of the box, it inherently changed a little bit just by you holding it. The next time you take it out, it’ll look a little different due to the last time you held it.

XyzzyYoureAFrog

This is probably what they’re referring to. Memories can easily be rewritten when recalling them. (Not exactly what was said by op, but maybe they remembered it slightly wrong.) https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2012/09/your-memory-is-like-the-telephone-game

PurpleFirebolt

It's made up.

corbomitey

It’s not made up. It’s a simplified version of the encoding, storage, and retrieval process. And it’s mostly true of narrative memories (instead of say a phone number or word). But this is how memories change over time. And it’s how you can ‘remember’ something you never experienced - like a story you hear often from when you are a kid.

PurpleFirebolt

It is made up. The fact that sometimes you remember memories does not mean you ONLY remember memories.

corbomitey

Right but OP was likely talking about the retrieval of narrative/episodic memories which is the part of cognitive psychology that fact is taken from

PurpleFirebolt

What they said was >When you recall a memory you’re not remembering the exact moment said memory occurred, but actually the last time you recalled that memory. Which is wrong.

Jack1715

Think about it over time memories fade cause we slowly forget the details

that_guy991

So.. I wanna thank you, i was stuck in scene in a story I'm writing about memories and dreams. What you said lights that lightbulb up my head.
