Some of my favorite roles are from actors who can truly pull this off. Umbridge in Harry Potter is another one where I just hate her the entire time she's on screen because she's so good at being evil. Also, Ramsey Snow in GoT
True. Met him in a pub in Dublin. Asked for a photo, he said no problem. Asked his friend/girlfriend to take the picture so me and my girlfriend could both be in the pic with him.
J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson in the *Spider-Man* films
Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey Lebowski in *The Big Lebowski*
Frances McDormand as Mildred Hayes in *Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*
James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in *The Sopranos*
JJJ was so perfectly cast and acted in Raimi's *Spider-Man* movies that the role is basically radioactive now. No *Spider-Man* movie has touched him since.
Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news. Bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts.
Hugh Laurie as House.
Cannot disassociate those two in my head, they were just meant for each other.
edit: fixing one of the dumbest typos I can possibly imagine
It’s hard to believe after watching House for so long that Hugh Laurie is actually a British comedian. Spent a long time partnered with Stephen Fry. He’s actually very funny
IIRC they did not even realize he was British on his audition tape, they wanted a quintessential American guy and they said "you know, like THIS guy, THIS is what I'm talking about!".
As i heard it,t hey were sick of getting British actors putting on American accents and wanted an actual American, which should give you an idea of how good his accent is.
Yeah. He did such a good job acting in House that I see his comedies and almost feel like I’m watching House screwing around as a young man. Haven’t heard his albums, but yeah. He’s an interesting guy
I like the story of that actor before the first movie started filming. He heard he got the part so he shaved his head and found out that the character wasnt bald yet so he filmed first class in a wig.
DeVito's performance as Louie De Palma in the 1970's series [*Taxi*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_(TV_series\)) was equally stellar.
He's my favorite character in both of those shows.
He's so... terrifying, in a bizarre way. Frank just skeeves me out on a deep spiritual level, and makes my very soul feel grimy and unclean. It's *fantastically* impressive acting!
I think the most impressive part is in real life he is apparently an unparalleled sweetheart. On par with someone like Tom Hanks. But he does the gross monster so well in that show.
The only person who didn't fit was Mark Brendanawicz (Leslie's "love interest") from the first season. He was supposed to be the show's version of Jim from The Office, but his character was way less charming. He got written out and never mentioned again after like the second season IIRC.
Thank fuck for that because I hated his character. Mark was a large part of why it took me multiple tries over a few years to actually get into parks & rec. Shout-out to whichever random redditor it was that suggesting skipping season one completely. Thanks to them, I fell in love.
that one random redditor was everyone who has ever seen the show.
The setup for Andy Dwyer was pretty relevant from season 1 but so much of those initial episodes was trash.
Offerman really is a master carpenter. When they wrote (as a joke) that Swanson moonlighted as an easy listening jazz saxophonist, the writers were stunned to learn that Offerman really did play the saxophone on the side.
The casting director for Parks and Rec, Allison Jones, has her hand in many other fantastically cast shows - The Office, Arrested Development, and some great movies as well.
edit: spelling
Yes, all of those actors are pretty much perfectly cast. Who other than Bryan Cranston could you imagine playing Walt? Also it’s crazy seeing Bob Odenkirk, famous for his comedic roles, playing such a serious part in better call Saul. Very dynamic.
The amazing thing about Bob Odenkirk is that, in his first couple of appearances, Saul Goodman is basically a Mr. Show character - it's a big, broad stereotype, that you could imagine being killed off or written out when the joke got tired. He brought a surprising amount of gravitas to such a goofy character, and then Better Call Saul really cemented that.
She's so good in AHS as the crazy actress playing the Butcher (I think that's the name). She's back this season! Yay!
Edit: Also, as the unsinkable molly brown
Marvel have been pretty good all round for casting, but I think their pinnacle for brilliant casting is still a Shakespearian actor (Tom hiddleston) as Loki, and a soap star (Chris Hemsworth) as Thor.
RDJ *IS* Iron Man. It just fits too well.
On the female side of things, I think Gal Gadot *IS* Wonder Woman. She plays off the cool, collected war goddess better than I think anyone else could.
Honorary mention to Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. I think there could have been a few people to play BP, but he had just the right combo of physicality, personality, and the right age, to pull it off perfectly.
Which is so weird to me, because he looks exactly nothing like book-Tywin, BUT he even surpasses his aura of power and threat.
Altogether marvelous actor, that man.
Diana Rigg as Olenna Tyrell was pretty spot on. She nailed the whole ‘little old lady who’s actually smarter and more cunning than everyone else and can also throw subtle insults that make you feel bad about yourself for weeks’ thing.
I think this is true because the cast seemed to create their own characters. I think some of the actors considered like Bob Odenkirk, Adam Scott, and Eric Stonestreet would have been an amazing Michael, Jim, and Kevin, they just would have played the characters a little differently.
"I think you mean: the Dowager Countess of Grantham... show the lady some respect, good sir!"
cos if you don't she will destroy you with some snarky one liners
They played the parts great and it’s hard to think of anyone else in the roles because of how well they did. They were old though for the parts. They should have both been mid 30’s to be in the same school class as Harry’s parents.
Snape was too old though, which had a knock-on effect on the casting that made everyone's ages a bit fucky. Harry's parents died pretty young in the books but in their 40s in the movies.
Andre Braugher stands out as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The whole cast is great, but on a rewatch he's the standout. His deadpan delivery and exaggerated diction is impeccable.
Also, Ted Danson as Michael on The Good Place.
Its interesting rewatching 99 because there is so much character development throughout the show its weird watching the show find its feet during the first episodes holt's feet were firmly planted from day 1 though.
Jason Alexander in Seinfeld was pretty amazing. I love how easily he can convey so much with a single look. Like right after Elaine rubbed his face on her chest for a "Christmas card", or when he makes the bet with Jerry in The Contest: "Care to make it interesting?" I don't think another actor could have done the role justice.
The only one who was classically trained, maybe, but Michael Richards was really serious about his work as well. There are tons of stories—and you can even see it in bloopers—of him getting annoyed with his co-stars when they kept cracking up and ruining a good take.
He got the role for being a fanboy of the 5th Doctor, then he got to be in a short episode with the 5th Doctor to fanboy at the 5th Doctor, then he married the 5th Doctor's daughter irl.
Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. He was an excellent fit (this is coming from someone who admittedly did not read the series). But he did a great job portraying the character as I would have expected that type of character to look/act. Plus I think it’s super cool that he did a Maori Haka for his audition for the role.
Pretty much everyone in The Lord of the Rings. Regardless of what you think about The Hobbit movies, I think Martin Freeman was perfect as Bilbo and Benadryl Cucumberpatch was great as Smaug.
Ian McKellen IS Gandalf. Whenever I read the books I picture him, he was the perfect mix of friendly/kooky old man and powerful, wise, slightly scary magical being.
I thought Lee Pace was a great pick for Thranduil too. I remember being *shocked* when I found out he also played Ned on "Pushing Daisies". He used his crazy height for two totally different effects in those roles.
When cast as Peter Quill (Starlord), he was told that he didn't have to lose weight or get fit, but he felt it was an opportunity to do so. So, he asked for 6 months (or so) to get in preparation. When he came back all jacked, people were obviously amazed.
Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I think with the movies, a lot of people forget that Peter is a *kid*, and he really enjoys being Spider-Man. I feel like Holland nailed it.
Aubrey Plaza as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation. Her peculair sense of humor, her awkwardness, and her outright abnormality are reflected perfectly in the show. The dynamics between her and Andy are also pretty spot-on.
Jack Gleason as Joffrey Baratheon. Out of everyone, you really hate him with every word he says and every mannerism he makes.
Some of my favorite roles are from actors who can truly pull this off. Umbridge in Harry Potter is another one where I just hate her the entire time she's on screen because she's so good at being evil. Also, Ramsey Snow in GoT
And from what I've heard, he's such a nice guy in real life.
True. Met him in a pub in Dublin. Asked for a photo, he said no problem. Asked his friend/girlfriend to take the picture so me and my girlfriend could both be in the pic with him.
J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson in the *Spider-Man* films Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey Lebowski in *The Big Lebowski* Frances McDormand as Mildred Hayes in *Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri* James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in *The Sopranos*
JJJ was so perfectly cast and acted in Raimi's *Spider-Man* movies that the role is basically radioactive now. No *Spider-Man* movie has touched him since.
They could just cast the same guy again, that'd be cool
They tried to for Homecoming, he was busy as Commissioner Gordon.
J.K. Simmons as Cave Johnson
HR said I can't put steps there for the wheelchairs. Don't care, ramps are expensive
J.K. Simmons as Terrence Fletcher in *Whiplash*
[](/kstarswirlaside)J.K. Simmons as [REDACTED] in *Gravity Falls.*
J.K Simmons as Vernon Schillinger in Oz..
I honestly don't think Disney could have gotten a better voice actor in The Lion King for Scar than Jeremy Irons.
Indeed. Not to mention James Earl Jones as Mufasa.
Or James Earl Jones as Darth Vader
I know the song was partially sung by Jim Cummings, but man if that isn't the best Disney villain song out there.
Hugh Laurie as House. Cannot disassociate those two in my head, they were just meant for each other. edit: fixing one of the dumbest typos I can possibly imagine
My mind is always torn between seeing Hugh Laurie as House, and seeing him as George in Black Adder.
I didn't even know he was British till I watched him in an interview. It blew my mind how different his natural voice is.
Go and watch some Blackadder. Be prepared, you will need someone to put your guts back in your belly.
Yeah, I found out recently they had a show together! He also makes music, and I actually really enjoy his albums. What a guy.
Yeah. He did such a good job acting in House that I see his comedies and almost feel like I’m watching House screwing around as a young man. Haven’t heard his albums, but yeah. He’s an interesting guy
Robert Englund as Freddy Kruger.
Its got to be Patrick Stewart as Professor X
My favorite part about the casting, was that Patrick Stewart was shown the comic and legit thought the character of Professor X was based off of him.
And honestly, James McAvoy did an awesome job as younger Charles Xavier.
He did, but Fassbender blew it out of the water as Magneto.
I like the story of that actor before the first movie started filming. He heard he got the part so he shaved his head and found out that the character wasnt bald yet so he filmed first class in a wig.
Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds
He just pulls off that skeezy persona so well!
"Did you bang my *whoor* wife?"
I think the most impressive part is in real life he is apparently an unparalleled sweetheart. On par with someone like Tom Hanks. But he does the gross monster so well in that show.
He always looks sticky.
He just wants to be pure.
May I offer you an egg during this trying time?
Speaking of.. Glenn Howerton as Dennis is perfection.
That whole cast is perfect.
Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson
Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope...really that whole cast was perfectly chosen for their roles
Even the smaller roles like Kyle, Orin, or Hermann Lerpis.
Jean-Ralphio
I made my money the old-fashioned way. 🎶*I got ran over by a Lexus*🎶
Hey you can join too cause I'm 🎶open minded as heeellll I think you're pretty good lookinnnn🎶
The only person who didn't fit was Mark Brendanawicz (Leslie's "love interest") from the first season. He was supposed to be the show's version of Jim from The Office, but his character was way less charming. He got written out and never mentioned again after like the second season IIRC.

Offerman really is a master carpenter. When they wrote (as a joke) that Swanson moonlighted as an easy listening jazz saxophonist, the writers were stunned to learn that Offerman really did play the saxophone on the side.
More like Ron Swanson as Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson
Perfect casting - the only person who could make this character work.
The casting director for Parks and Rec, Allison Jones, has her hand in many other fantastically cast shows - The Office, Arrested Development, and some great movies as well. edit: spelling
Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. On that note, Bob Odenkirk as Saul.
Mmh mmhmm..
He has the best “For fuck sake... here we fucking go again” face ever. Enjoyed each and every scene he was in.
Kathy Bates in "Misery".
She's so good in AHS as the crazy actress playing the Butcher (I think that's the name). She's back this season! Yay! Edit: Also, as the unsinkable molly brown
Kathy bates in pretty much everything. Except bad Santa 2 that just shouldn't have been made.
Robin Williams as Genie in *Aladdin.*
R Lee Ermy as the drill instructor in full metal jacket.
Also Vincent D'Onofrio as private Pyle, he played that part so damn well
RDJ as Iron Man
Marvel have been pretty good all round for casting, but I think their pinnacle for brilliant casting is still a Shakespearian actor (Tom hiddleston) as Loki, and a soap star (Chris Hemsworth) as Thor.
Everyone doubted Idris Elba as Heimdall until he *owned* that role, too.
And Hugh Jackman as wolverine. Both were spot on.
He was cast perfectly for his version of Wolverine, but he definitely wouldn't fit as the comics version.
I love Tom Holland's Spiderman too
RDJ *IS* Iron Man.
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
Also Sean Bean as Ned Stark.
And Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister.
He will always be my go to answer to this question.
Which is so weird to me, because he looks exactly nothing like book-Tywin, BUT he even surpasses his aura of power and threat. Altogether marvelous actor, that man.
Also Jack Gleeson as Joffrey.
Diana Rigg as Olenna Tyrell was pretty spot on. She nailed the whole ‘little old lady who’s actually smarter and more cunning than everyone else and can also throw subtle insults that make you feel bad about yourself for weeks’ thing.
Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture Show
Mads Mikkelsen and Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter
Thank you for bringing them up. Both are great and very different portrayals of an amazing character
Hugh Dancy is still the quintesential Will Graham for me.
Steve Carell as "World's Best Boss" Michael Scott
And rainn wilson as dwight
That entire show was cast so well
Dwight’s wedding and Michael’s last day always bring tears to my eyes.
I think this is true because the cast seemed to create their own characters. I think some of the actors considered like Bob Odenkirk, Adam Scott, and Eric Stonestreet would have been an amazing Michael, Jim, and Kevin, they just would have played the characters a little differently.
And John Krasinski as Jim
Chris O Dowd and Richard Ayoade in the I.T . Crowd Perfectly distilled super nerdy contempt
The episode where they go to watch a play absolutely destroys me with laughter.

>How? How are you disabled? Leg disabled.
Do you have a wheelchair? Where?
I think when Jen turns around from a disabled Roy to see Moss a the bar is a perfect moment of comedy.
Every belief I’ve ever held is being challenged, and I love it!
Jon Benjamin as Archer. Nobody else could have made that role as good as it is.
Jessica Walter as Mallory!
"If I cared what you did last weekend, I'd put a shotgun in my mouth and pull the trigger *with my toe*"
H. Jon Benjamin as anything is the right choice
Maggie Smith as Minerva Mcgonagall and Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge A lot of other Harry Potter characters but these two were on the nose.
Also I thought Evanna Lynch was a perfect Luna Lovegood
Evanna Lynch *is* Luna Lovegood and JK Rowling said as much.
She was also perfect as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey.
"I think you mean: the Dowager Countess of Grantham... show the lady some respect, good sir!" cos if you don't she will destroy you with some snarky one liners
I can't upvote this enough times. Staunton made umbridge truly and perfectly hateable
I didn’t think it was possible to hate Umbridge more after reading the books, but Staunton made it possible
Absolutely! To add to this, Gary Oldman as Sirius Black and Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. Absolute perfection.

John McGinley as Dr Cox in scrubs. I couldn't imagine anyone else to do that job
Neil Flynn originally auditioned for that role. I just can't see it. He was perfect as the Janitor aka Dr. Jan Itor.
I really liked Winona Ryder in Stranger Things. She was the perfect overworked, stressed out, 1980s single mom.
Yes. Her and Hopper (can't remember actors name) were perfect.
David Harbour is the actor's name FYI.
You mean the tide ad guy?
Matthew Perry as Chandler
That's ms chanandler bong to you
Could he BE better?
Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool
Ryan Reynolds as Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2

I just saw DP2 yesterday, and Brad Pitt as the Vanisher had me laughing for the rest of the night.
Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds.
Timothy Oliphant in *Justified.* He just carved Raylon out of thin air, right down to that skinny strut.
Also Margo Martindale as Mags Bennett.
Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks in Castaway, Christoph Waltz in Django and Inglorious Basterds. Jamie Foxx as Django.
the fact that I feel Pissed and Disgusted every time I see Christoph Waltz smile or smirk is proof that he did an excellent job in those movies.
Christoph is one of my favourite actors
Mine too love him
Harrison Ford as Han Solo.
Also as Indiana Jones
Bryan Cranston as Walter White Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman

Jonathan Banks is also an excellent Mike Ehrmantraut. He pulls it off in style during Better Call Saul as well.
Leonard Nimoy as Spock I saw the first one, the first night, in 1968 My first thought was .. "Kirk's an idiot, Spock should be captain"
Andy Serkis as gollum
Chris Sarandon as Prince Humperdinck in The Princess Bride. No one else could ever, ever play that role and not disappoint me.
Alan Rickman as Snape.
Alan Rickman as every role Alan Rickman ever played.
Yes. I still say Metatron was his best role. "Sweet Jesus! Did you have to use the whole can??"
He absolutely owned every scene he was in. So funny. Probably the best Kevin Smith movie.

"Do you douse everyone who enters your bedroom in flame retardant chemicals? It's no wonder you're single"
By Grabthar's hammer... what a savings.
Sheriff of Nottingham is my favorite. Hilariously despicable.
I think Alan Rickman's portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham was more comical than the portrayal of the Sheriff of Rottingham in Men in Tights.
Alan Rickman as the depressed robot was also good
James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.
Matthew McConnaghey as Rust Cole, True Detective.
IIRC Jason was the only classically trained actor of the four.
If you watch interviews where he talks about it, he is very serious about his craft.
The only one who was classically trained, maybe, but Michael Richards was really serious about his work as well. There are tons of stories—and you can even see it in bloopers—of him getting annoyed with his co-stars when they kept cracking up and ruining a good take.

Jon Hamm as Don Draper (Mad Men), Terry O'Quinn as John Locke (LOST), Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men).
Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan
Also Ewan in Trainspotting
David Tennant in Doctor Who.
David Tennant in Harry Potter. David Tennant in Jessica Jones. David Tennant in absolutely everything he's in.
David Tennant in Broadchurch. I want to watch that for the first time again.
He got the role for being a fanboy of the 5th Doctor, then he got to be in a short episode with the 5th Doctor to fanboy at the 5th Doctor, then he married the 5th Doctor's daughter irl.
David Bowie as Jareth in the labyrinth
Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. He was an excellent fit (this is coming from someone who admittedly did not read the series). But he did a great job portraying the character as I would have expected that type of character to look/act. Plus I think it’s super cool that he did a Maori Haka for his audition for the role.
Pretty much everyone in The Lord of the Rings. Regardless of what you think about The Hobbit movies, I think Martin Freeman was perfect as Bilbo and Benadryl Cucumberpatch was great as Smaug.

Nathen fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds
NPH as Barney Stinson
Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring (breaking bad). Edit:character name correction. My shitty hearing has fucked me once again.
Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy comes to mind. I mean whoever saw Andy Dwyer and said "this guy's a movie star" earned my respect.
Not to mention that Andy Dwyer himself was also perfectly cast. Peter Quill is just a smarter Andy Dwyer.
I like to think that Andy Dwyer is star Lord after he's retired from the guardians and does all the goofy shit he ever wanted to
Agreed! He fit into both types of role so well.
When cast as Peter Quill (Starlord), he was told that he didn't have to lose weight or get fit, but he felt it was an opportunity to do so. So, he asked for 6 months (or so) to get in preparation. When he came back all jacked, people were obviously amazed.

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan was the best acting job I’ve ever seen in my life. Utterly irreplaceable. He absolutely killed that role.
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Ian McShane as that cocksucker Al Swearingin in Deadwood.
Aubrey Plaza as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation. Her peculair sense of humor, her awkwardness, and her outright abnormality are reflected perfectly in the show. The dynamics between her and Andy are also pretty spot-on.
Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. Fight me.
Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles
Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone (1 and 2). He was perfect for that role. I can't think of any child actor around that time that could've done better.
Shooter McGavin as Shooter McGavin. He is and always will be, Shooter McGavin
Ryan Reynolds as deadpool...
