For those commenting “i’m the captain now” referencing a quote from captain Phillips listen up. When that movie came out the media & movies pushed the somalis are pirates narrative leaving out the full story. I suggest you learn the history before making corny pirate jokes… Crazy enough, there was less than a handful of actual piracy attacks in somali waters that all happened in 2007-2008, after that piracy died. Not a single movie showed the real reason for it.. They never showed both sides to the story, only one to push their agenda & propagate. Many european countries like France & germany dumped TONS of nuclear waste like uranium, mercury and tons of trash & hospital waste in somali waters during the civil war. They also stole BILLION in fish leaving the somalis who relied on that to starve during a civil war. A tsunami happened in somalia 2005 and all the nuclear waste they dumped to wash up. It caused thousands of deaths & birth defects. Not a single major news outlet picked it up.. Somalia before the civil war had a very large navy fleet, after the war it was all gone. Somalia was once the most militarized country in africa, even israeli jets didn’t dare to violate its airspace in their mission in africa (there’s a book written on that). When the civil war happened many countries took advantage of the chaos. Foreign fishers & nuclear dumpers took advantage of that. They made somalis look demonic & evil in that movie. They all violated somali waters & no one said anything, they just got upset when they had to pay a fine from angry locals. What were they doing in somali waters? the fisherman’s small boats could barley reach past the shores. Truth is they were either delivering weapons to warlords or dumping toxic waste. They were all close to somali’s shore & could be seen looting our recourses. Somali fisherman, former navy man & civilians all pledged to defend our waters from these criminals. These European companies were the true pirates but that will be a story told in the future.. It was successful for a short time until a few desperate people took advantage & ruined the name for the “civil war navy”. They were hungry and extremely upset that these large fishing vessels were stealing our resources so they took up arms. I don’t condone that behavior but i understand. It got to a point where they stopped any ship in SOMALI WATERS since they couldn’t identify them or knew the reason they were in our waters without permission. The fish were either gone or dying because of the nuclear dumping & over fishing. People who live next to the waters were getting sick & dying. Somalia relied heavy on it since it has the largest coast line in africa. You probably didn’t know that…. I spoke to many fisherman in somalia who were around at the time & explained it to me. There’s a few books written about it if you’re interested. Let’s leave the racist corny stereotypes in 2013…
Many are like this in Canada. Ive inly met 2 that weren’t like these the rest were unfortunately but the somalis 2 I grew up with in middle school and high school in Qatar were super chill so idk 🤷🏽♂️
You mean Somalia in particular (not all middle easterners), if so why?
p.s. I am not overly familiar with both countries, would apricate some ALIE5 explanation to get me started
Somalia in particular.
The demographics are actually crazy similar, not only in the shared Cushitic decent but also religiously with Sufi, salafi mix. , we share a lot of food and the music is nostalgic I sometimes think it’s Sudanese [just look at this random trad. Somali music I found](https://youtu.be/ZCMQjSVkcGM)/////[and this sudani “حقيبة” ie classical song](https://youtu.be/Urw1XhA_Qes) .1 sec into each video and you’ll see the similarities probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if you didn’t speak either language.
It’s a lot of small cultural similarities… and Sudan and the rest of the Middle East don’t really have much in common …. Well they do but not really and it’s really only in Khartoum/ casual culture. Where the similarities with Somalia Ethiopia Eritrea and tchad are much deeper but language also a big difference.
I am not an AKP supporter but understand why Somalis like Erdogan.
One of the few things Erdogan did right was build relations with Somalia when everyone else basically abandoned them to famine. I think it was 2011 or something like that. Now we have the biggest embassy and military base there.
It's too bad the Turkish govt treats Somalia very racistly.
https://stockholmcf.org/turkish-authorities-detain-somali-restaurant-owner-in-ankara-for-deportation-despite-legal-residence-in-turkey/
Not to deny what happened but you can't paint the entire Turkish government as racist for the action of the police. Especially when Erdogan himself has establishes the most relations with Africa than any other leader
I live in Europe, unfortunately Somali people are always depicted negative in news.
I met 2 Somalis in my life both named Abdi, lol. One is data scientist other one is studying to become docter. Data scientists guy comes from very poor background but in time of needed he always helped. He gave me his chemistry books for free, amazing guy!

I mean where to start. Best tea, excellent food (to be eaten with a banana, sounds crazy until you try it), chillest people. Really wish them the best, they've had many years of conflict in their country and deserve better.
Love your flag, people seem pretty nice, at least the ones I have seen so far, although I didn't have a lot of contact with Somali people. Sad about the state of your country, hope you can fix it
Somali patients I have had are all very pleasant. They remind me more of Turkish or Iranian or Central Asian when it comes to their style of Islam, in that they are not too extreme. A lot of the women would remove their hijab while in labor rooms and the husbands did not interfere too much (I am an Ob/Gyn in the US). Stark contrast with some South Asian Muslim or Arab Muslim pts
Don't know much about the country, other than it being like a permanently unsafe place to visit
I grew up in the US state that has the largest Somali population. I'm a fan. As for the country itself, it's a shame they've been plagued by civil war and political instability for so long.
1. I need to find photos of Mogadishiu before the civil war to base the architecture of my D&D game
2. Seriously, I need to study it history and culture in general for that game.
3. Pirates >>>>> abyss >>>>> Latin American Drug Dealers
So let me get this straight. You've met traumatized, undiagnosed refugees from a war-torn nation. An occupied nation but your brain was like 'oh shit they're animals'? and you lot are supposed to be intelligent people?
Never met a Somali that I didn’t like. Hard working, smart; and pretty funny people.
It’s sad seeing the perpetual state of disarray their country is in. I hope they can resolve it and it can return to the wonderful place it once was - and inshallah visit myself
Why would you ask a du.mb question like this in some middle eastern subreddit???
All we got was racist and xenophobic sayings disguised as “jokes” some of you Somalis need to grow a backbone and stop begging others
We shoudnt care what others think about us
The central government should take a step back and give all the power to the autonomous states. I love the blue flag with all my heart, so it should remain an ethnic flag that unites all the Somalis in and out of the Horn of Africa.
Soomaalidu ha noolaadan waligood!
My suggestion is entirely valid.
A) More people are loyal to their autonomous state than to the federal government.
B) People are loyal to their tribes more than they are to the federal government.
C) Every autonomous state belongs to one clan or another(majority).
D)The federal government barely controls the autonomous states as it is.
*Those are well-known facts to the Somalis.*
The federal government is there to paint a picture they hope to achieve someday instead of finding different approaches to create a better future for the coming generations. What have they done in the last 30 years other than trying the same proposition and hoping to get a different outcome? Who are they pleasing, their citizens, who are under terrorist attacks every minute of the day and avoidable natural disasters, or outsiders who want to spread their ideologies to Somalia? It’s impossible to fully comprehend what’s happening in Somalia if you’re not Somali yourself because it’s much deeper than you see.
I hate to get political, especially on the Internet, but that’s the reality.
Clan states are awful and the worst way forward. When stability comes the impact on qabil will decrease. We need internal integration in the future but security is step one.
It seems like it will take at least 20 more years to get a stable Federal Republic of Somalia that completely shuts down this autonomous state bs. Besides, clan states are a lot better than what Somalia is now. Take a look at the Northerners. They are doing much better than their southern counterpart. The same goes for Djibouti, even though they ended up with a dictator who plans to stay in power until he dies. History is also full of countries and empires that were once sovereign states but split into multiple stable and functioning countries. Either way, I support whatever system that takes people towards stability and peace, even if it’s unorthodox.
Dude most things are better then what Somalis have now, clan states are a short term solution but in the long term it would be worse for us.
Even though I hate qabil, I understand why qabil exists but it’s one of the big hurdles that Somalis must overcome in order to make drastic improvements in our land. Can you clarify you last point. It sounds like your advocating for Balkanizing Somalia into clan nations. Although I may be interpreting it wrong.
If the state of Somali affairs continues on this path, Balkanisation might be quite possible. Ultimately, I’m a firm believer in, ‘Haddii aan lagu heshiin karin in la wada joogo, aynu ku heshiino in aynu kala tagno, duco na aan iskogu darno.’
It's going to get buried but OP might see it and it's a funny story.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I used to get bored rather frequently so I started going on Omegle. One of the first people I met was a Somali guy who was living in Sweden.
He said his name was Abdul, and that he was 17 years old. He honestly did not look it so I immediately imagined he was lying but couldn't understand why. He then asked me for my age, and I told him I was 21.
When I said that he looked super shocked and said I was probably lying because my face looked too young. He later tried to fix his age by asking me if I was willing to have a long distance friendship with an 24 year old like him, or if I preferred dating guys who were more my age. I said, "I wouldn't do that because you lied about your age so that makes me suspect of you".
When I called him out on it he admitted he lied about his age to try and get to me, so he yelled at me that I probably was lying about my age too and then some Arabic curse and disconnected.
But, Somali girls are gorgeous MashAllah.

Story of the whole MENA world
Is Somalia part of the MENA world?
Depends, it doesn’t fit well with the rest of Africa, so I would say so, but others wouldn’t
Interesting, how doesn't it fit well with the rest of Africa?
Language, culture, and history is a lot more similar to MENA than to Sub-Saharan Africa
Sad this true
