Probably still the majority of them, I’d say maybe 80-90%
The only school-related ones I had were film club and an advisory position; everything else was personalized to what I enjoyed!
Good for you. This is (or should be) everyone's answer more or less. And frankly it's what schools want. The[MIT "apply sideways" blog](https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways/) is always worth a read to remind people of this. Do high school well by leaning in and doing the things you love.
😂 I didn’t do any ecs beside soccer cause I liked it and got into T30 Engineering schools which are good enough for me. This sub is just over achievers
not sure! i was never too stressed about college throughout highschool so tbh i dont really have that many ecs under my belt, and the ones i do have i started because i wanted to. but i imagine that come junior year, i would budget my time differently if ecs didn't matter for college (ie less time editing other peoples' writing and more time writing on my own). so i'll say 85%?
Haha - I would still have done Mathletes and Quiz Bowl since I'm a nerd. I also still would have played soccer since it's fun. It was also kind of cool to intern for a state senator even though I took the experience to increase my chances of getting in college. I probably wouldn't have bothered with speech/debate though to be honest.
70%??? I might not have tried some of my ECs w/o the incentive of college apps and really fallen in love with them. and there is one EC I wouldn’t be so outwardly invested in if it wasn’t for college apps
Why was nhs so bad? At our school you literally got out of class for 45 minutes once a month to go sit and listen to them talk about fundraiser/volunteer ideas for 15 minutes then you could talk to your friends so it was pretty good for us, though there were like $15 yearly dues which were kinda dumb but that's it
Because it’s a worthless money laundering scheme that literally does nothing but raise money for itself and waste time that students could spend doing something productive. Dumb ass club.
But your comment is so true. 100% did not have motivation to create a non profit, start anything or do research lol doing those things should not be normalized when most of them have absolutely no impact on society.
Let's say it were, how would you then evaluate candidates? If you're going only by academics let me remind you there are 196+ countries and territories with their own systems, how would you deal with all that?
All of them. I love each and every single one.
They’ve pushed me so far out of my comfort zone and forced me to become a better version of myself, high school would be too dull without them tbh.
100% I initially had no intention of applying to colleges in the us, rather in my country where you only get in based on test scores and whatnot. Meaning, I did all of my ECs out of pure passion!
Probably my three seasons of varsity and the stuff I do over the summer. So like 60pct or so. That said, I like 100pct of what I do, it’s just harder to manage all at once.
Maybe like 75%? I like all my ECs, but I probably would not have bothered filling out program applications if they didn’t matter for colleges, so I wouldn’t have the programs to which I’d’ve refused to apply.
All of them except NHS. Might’ve hurt my application a little since I was in stuff like my schools A/V clubs instead of the curing cancer club or whatever half the people here are doing but I only did stuff I really wanted to do and had a really good time because of it
I would not have done the BIG ecs cause I could have done it in college with resources. But still happy even though for college apps I am doing something different
I think I’d still be doing them. I took over two organizations because I was the only one who would. I’d definitely still be taking my music electives and violin lessons.
I feel like college admissions incentivised me to do many things I really like, that I otherwise wouldn’t have done. In retrospect, I’d do all my research projects and mobile apps all over, for example, because it was amazing doing them. That being said, I don’t think I’d have done any of the significant ones, if it weren’t for college admissions
Probably 75% or so. Most of my ECs allow me to experience and learn new things, so I would still do most of them, but wouldn’t try to “pack in” ECs into my schedule
I'd do most of them, and I'd assume most others would too in my area. Growing up in an academically mid, large public high school in Arizona, 95% of my peers are instate ASU/UofA/NAU commits before they are even born. For most, keeping A's would be more than enough to fulfill that prophecy, meaning that almost everyone in my school clubs actually wants to be there.
the same amount… i didn’t necessarily realize how important they were to college apps until after i had leadership roles in my most important ones. overall, i love what i do, what wouldn’t change it
To be honest all of them. Maybe not NHS tho bc its a lot of work. Most of my ECs are sports and work so I would do them regardless. Also student council I did in middles school so yeah I would have done it regardless.
all of them! I’m an international student and where I’m from the ECs don’t matter for what I want to major in. Like if you apply to engineering/ comp sci and business, they matter. But for me, none of them asked and they just look at grade. So I honestly did them all for fun. I only decided to apply to the US this year
Only bad tho about the way it works here is that if someone is doing ECs and dedicating their time to smth besides school but get slightly lower grades compared to the kid who just grinds they literally don’t care. They will 100% pick the kid with the higher average
My EC’s are all I focused on because they were genuinely passion projects and I got rejected ED1 and ED2 so apparently anyone who isn’t doing ECs just to pad their academics is doing it wrong

This makes me sad for you 💔
Y'all virtue signal so hard on here lmao
All of them I was lucky not to find this sub until senior year and so I didn't waste my time doing activities I hated just to be a prestige whore.
😂 I didn’t do any ecs beside soccer cause I liked it and got into T30 Engineering schools which are good enough for me. This sub is just over achievers
At this point I've made friends in a lot of my ECs (although I may have done some of them at first just for my application) so probably 75%+
Only NSHSS
NSHSS ELITE GANG 💪💪💪 the few the proud
That shit is a scam 💀
100%. I do stuff I like!
70%, idgaf about honor societies

37.5%
I probably would have kept doing 75% of them
All of them probably maybe I wouldn’t have gunned for leadership positions in as many tho
70%??? I might not have tried some of my ECs w/o the incentive of college apps and really fallen in love with them. and there is one EC I wouldn’t be so outwardly invested in if it wasn’t for college apps
Well my Ec is my job and I need it to survive.
All of them except NHS, fuck that shit
Why was nhs so bad? Because it’s fucking stupid, it’s a waste of time. We don’t get to skip class for it either. It doesn’t really benefit your app.
Because it’s a worthless money laundering scheme that literally does nothing but raise money for itself and waste time that students could spend doing something productive. Dumb ass club.

100% I just couldn't push myself to do ECs I disliked despite the college application pressure😳
why are ppl downvoting you
no idea lmao
But your comment is so true. 100% did not have motivation to create a non profit, start anything or do research lol doing those things should not be normalized when most of them have absolutely no impact on society.
exactly sister🥹wish u good luck in ur application😍💕🥹
ECs should absolutely be ripped away from college admissions, among other things.
Let's say it were, how would you then evaluate candidates? If you're going only by academics let me remind you there are 196+ countries and territories with their own systems, how would you deal with all that?
Google UK college admissions
Holy hell
was not expecting to see an r/AnarchyChess reference on this sub
It has breached containment
Imo it’s just a reflection of American culture in general. American culture is known for having a large emphasis on volunteering.
UK admissions process >>> tbh. Even if it’s more cutthroat
all of them
100%....... y'all are insane 😭😭😭
all of them! I promised myself freshman year that I wouldn’t do anything just for college :)
100% I was doing them before I even started thinking about college.
All of them…I did not even know they mattered until application season 💀
100 I didn't know they mattered for the US college application process until my senior year.
All of them. I love each and every single one. They’ve pushed me so far out of my comfort zone and forced me to become a better version of myself, high school would be too dull without them tbh.
100%. I love my ECs and I'm most likely going to continue them in college! Why do an extracurricular if you don't like it anyways?
100% I initially had no intention of applying to colleges in the us, rather in my country where you only get in based on test scores and whatnot. Meaning, I did all of my ECs out of pure passion!

100%. One of them is a job I lowkey hate but since I can work online, I'm saving it for when I'm broke in college.
probably 70% most i did just for pure enjoyment and a few i did for college
90% ish.

Ironic that the post right below this is asking for EC recommendations-
Half of them?? I’m way too busy even though I live all of them
Lmfao like two, soccer and my job. And my aquarium hobby but other than that, that’s it.
all of them, I didn't sign up for ecs just for college credit, I do them because I enjoy them
All of them, I do things I enjoy them not because I want to get into Harvard (I mean I still really want to get into Harvard).
now 100%, but last year definitely like 50 decided for senior year it wasn’t that deep and dropped a few
I would not have done the BIG ecs cause I could have done it in college with resources. But still happy even though for college apps I am doing something different

like 9/10 I was still heavily involved in shit during elementary school so..
NHS being the only one I quit
Definitely still orchestra and my job and tutoring, the only one I'd probably quit is nwlhs
A lot of them
All of them. I was an idiot and didn't understand colleges wanted ECs until I was like a junior. Wish I knew freshman year.
Probobly like 65%? I still would have done volunteer work just like not as much and I wouldn't have joined some of the clubs I did
I’d probably say 75%! I’d still be in the same electives and stuff but I wouldn’t have done the audition-only orchestra or the leadership positions.
All except the honors societies I joined. I just did ECs I enjoyed for the most part
