Maybe Angel Beats would be good,has some good music, and is quite sad,

You can do the Makoto Shinkai movie tour. His newer more famous stuff like Your Name and Weathering with you are happier, but his older stuff is extremely somber and sad. 5 Centimeters Per Second and Garden of Words for example. His first short film, Voice of distant star was really good.
He was also the writer of the visual novel Ef, which had a really good anime adaptation that pioneered the style studio Shaft is known for and is incredibly sad in its own right.
