Best midfield

Best midfield

thejamjamjimjam

Shaun Rehn tapping to Ricciuto, Goodwin, McLeod, Sloane, and Dangerfield. Edwards and Bickley very close.

fiftyshadesofcray

Sounds handy

trans-adzo-express

Wynd down to Bont, Macrae, Dunkley, Libba & Treloar

Godlee84

Which Libba? Plus no West or Johnson?

trans-adzo-express

I’m half joking, half serious. I would have Macrae ahead of west as the accumulator, Tom is shit loads better than Tony and Johnno was his best in the forward 50 not really in the midfield. This is easily the best midfield we’ve assembled in my lifetime.

Godlee84

What about Darcy as ruck?

Frogmouth_Fresh

No way, Wynd was better. There’s a reason he won a Brownlow.

kingwarne

Didn't watch the 90s, Tom over Tony, really? I know the game has changed but all I know is the brownlow.

AntiVictorian

This is super easy for Brisbane. Voss, Black, Akermanis, Lappin, Neale. Martin as Ruck.

DiscoMegatron

Surely Keating in the ruck. They would roll him out of hospital every finals series.

kleft02

Clark "The Finals Consultant" Keating

Brett-the-charmer

Would it be as easy if you included Fitzroy heritage?

OldMegabattimus

Ruck: Paddy Ryder Mids: Zach Merrett, Darcy Parish, Jobe Watson, Jason Johnson, James Hird

FlyingMiniMonk

Sandilands rucking for Fyfe Mundy Bell Hasleby, maybe Pav as the 5th? EDIT: Crowley also a good shout as a tagger and still a very good mid

Priestess-Of-Winter

Sandilands and Fyfe those were the days, man the year Fyfe won his first Brownlow he was so good, I loved watching him play. Best first half of a season I have ever witnessed in my life. When I heard Cripps had the record for the most amount of votes in 8 rounds I think? I was so confused because there’s no way he played better than Fyfe

UBeleeDis

Would be an incredibly balanced midfield they were to actually play together as well.

CallumA2794

Neale a bit rough to miss out but I can see why

Designer_Federal

J Carr for Hasleby - he’s halfway between Crowley and Hasleby so you get both!

Godlee84

Now that’s a Freo team I’d be afraid of lol.

lumberfun

Max Lynch to Pendlebury, Buckley, Beams, Shaw, Swan

Godlee84

I didn’t see Lynch play but I’m a little surprised you didn’t have Grundy or Sidebottom in there.

lumberfun

Was taking the piss a bit with the ruck pick, Sidebottom vs Beams could go either at but I think Beams best season was better than Sidebottoms

Godlee84

If you don’t want Grundy feel free to give him to us lol. Grundy and Nic Nat on the same team would rock.

lumberfun

The eagles have already stolen enough from us

Godlee84

Lol. Fair enough. Just trying to help a fellow bird out.

Devlin_McGregor

Carlton: Chic Breese tapping it, Harcourt Dowsley, Brighton Diggins, Wally O'Cock, Edric Bickford and Artie McSpeerin following. Wow, what a team that would have been, one can only dream. I know what you're saying though, how can you not include Otto Buck or Ernie Dingwall? Well...sometimes you have to make tough decisions.

kleft02

Surely Devlin McGregor would get a run in there, or are you playing him off a halfback flank?

sltfc

Ottens to Selwood, Ablett, Danger, Bartel, Johnson. Special mentions to Corey, Ling, Guthrie and Buddha who was my idol as a kid but I was too young to actually remember his play.

CaptainVoltz

I'm definitely not biased but this wins. Just the sheer number of Brownlow votes in that midfield.

Godlee84

I think I may be bias but the only ones I can see competing with this would be Eagles and Hawthorn. Watching all those players together in their primes would be awesome.

CaptainVoltz

Cox gives you guys such an edge. Literally another midfielder.

Godlee84

Definitely Cox was brilliant. Although I think Ablett may count as 3 midfielders lol.

Codyfucksticks

Surely Brisbane would compete with that batch?

Godlee84

Yeah I mentioned in another comment I totally forgot about Brisbane. Their best 5 mids would definitely be able to compete with the best of any team.

Godlee84

This was the one I was waiting for. Geelong has had some brilliant midfielders throughout different eras so I was interested to see which would make the cut.

sltfc

Off the top of my head the only team that I think could be on par is West Coast's, or maybe Brisbane if you chuck in Neale with some of the three-peat-ers

Godlee84

Totally forgot about Brisbane. Voss, Black, Neale and whoever else (*Brisbane fan help me out) would make a formidable midfield.

gurgefan

Farmer for Ottens, Couch for Johnson. Williams probably doesn’t count for the Cats.

Brett-the-charmer

I’m with you on Polly but I’d go with Gary Hocking for Johnson. You need a bit of mongrel in that middle and he went hard in and under. Apologies to Billy Goggin, Selwood and Joel Corey who was underrated in those Geelong sides on and off the field.

gurgefan

Yeah don’t mind Buddha or Couch there

Brett-the-charmer

It’s a pretty decent midfield any way you slice it. Mark Bairstow is another overlooked mid. If you wanted to go with Brownlow tallies the Ablett Jnr, Selwood, Danger, Buddha and Bartel. And as much as I love our Mr September Brad Otten’s I think Sam Newman would be first reserve in the ruck

kleft02

We should also save Johnson for the forward pocket. He was good in the middle but his best was in front of goal, surely.

sltfc

He came third or fourth in a Brownlow count in a year he was suspended and that Joel came second in, he was pretty bloody good as a mid. I think he would have spent more of his career there if we hadn't been so stacked.

Brett-the-charmer

Buddha came in top four in the Brownlow 4 yearS in a row and Selwood’s number 9 on the all time Brownlow list and he’s got at least one 3 voter this year already.

Brett-the-charmer

Exactly, he was never a pure mid, if Gary Ablett Senior gets picked as a forward flank in Geelong’s team of the century,it tells you that either sometimes you have to make accommodations or we had a great full forward in Wade and some particularly special wingers with the Turners.

AskMantis

Can't fit Ablett Sr? I guess he played his best footy as a forward.

Kunaal__Choks

Polly?

sltfc

I'm limiting it to only people I've seen play

laserframe

Im picking Ling over Johnson as i think we need a defensive midfielder and it balances it more

MonotoneRamos

Ruck: Madden, Hird, Jobe Watson, Tim Watson, Zach Merrett, Dick Reynolds

GrudaAplam

Not too shabby

Priestess-Of-Winter

No Parish?

ShannonBlake

As an Eagles fan I’m taking Cox, Judd, Cousins, Yeo, Priddis and Matera

legoland6000

Yeah I think one or both of Priddis and Yeo are necessary among the other obvious Eagles options. At some point you start getting diminishing returns if you haven't got anyone laying tackles.

Godlee84

Yeah it was hard leaving Priddis and Yeo out but I went for more speed.

legoland6000

If we're looking for long term success Cox, Shuey, Judd, Yeo, Matera, Kerr If we want the 'fuck he's good but this cannot be a sustainable lifestyle' Midfield Gardiner, Kerr, Cousins, Fletcher, Mainwaring, and of course Violent criminal Andrew Gaff.

spooky-frek

Not sure if you're aware but ah, you've put kerr up there twice. I'm assuming by long term success you mean non drug taking party boys so unless you mean Sam Kerr, ol mate Kerr shouldn't be up the top. Also I hope it's satire about Gaffy

legoland6000

I'm going along the line of thinking that in the right environment, Daniel Kerr could probably stay out of trouble. But then again, who knows. If I had to swap him out, I'd chuck Dean Kemp or Pridda in there.

no_haduken

Sandilands and 5 Fyfes

Godlee84

Lol. They’d never kick a goal.

no_haduken

Here we are all having a good time then you go and say something hurtful like that

Godlee84

lol. Sorry mate. On the bright side they would kick so many points that you’d probably still win anyway. The scoreboard would be 2 goals and 124 points.

Priestess-Of-Winter

How many premierships in a row would that be?

no_haduken

One will do mate

[deleted]

Boak, Wines, Gray, Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes and Ryder. Great balance of class, grunt and flair.

Codyfucksticks

Francou probably stiff to miss out but I guess you’ve gone for a balance of styles.

Titan_Redeemer

Not primus?

bazalenko

Always thought primus was a bit overrated. Lade was the better tap ruckman. Him and Burgoyne were ridiculous together

Codyfucksticks

They literally had to change the rules because Primus was dominating in the ruck so much. If we’re doing it for pure tap work though, probably Lade.

CoolCoconuts44

Ryder over Lade?

[deleted]

Was a toss up between the two, I just think Ryder fits the dynamic I would want in a hypothetical.

ItsABiscuit

Grundy rucking to Buckley, Pendlebury, Swan, Sidebottom and Tony Shaw. Millane, Burns, Licuria, Ball and Adams next 5.

GrowthhackerAU

Harry Madden, Chris Judd, Patrick Cripps, Greg Williams on the inside with Craig Bradley and Anthony Koutoufides on the wings. Bench has Brett Ratten, Fraser Brown, Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs or Camporeale. Sam Walsh in the cradle.

Averagetigergod

Any era you say? Jack Dyer down to Dusty, Kevin Bartlett, Ian Stewart, Matty Knights and Cotch. AFL era: Nank down to Dusty, Cotch, Prestia, Matty Knights and Wayne Campbell.

PluggersLeftBall

Goodes down to Kennedy, Parker, Jack, Hannebery and Stephens

dazedjosh

No Paul Kelly?

Maximumlnsanity

>and Stephens Sometimes I just don't need to read the username, hello Plugger Anyway, same goes for me but swap Stephens for Jolly or Tippett, move Goodes down to onballer

Godlee84

No Jolly?

PluggersLeftBall

goodes won a brownlow as a ruck so imma go with him

Godlee84

Fair point.

Sir-Matilda

Sandiland with Fyfe, Mundy, Neale, Hasleby and Bell.

Ezzalenko

No Pav?

Sir-Matilda

Not really a mid.

Ezzalenko

won an AA there.

PimentoSandwich

Laurie Keene in the ruck with Dean Kemp, Brayden Ainsworth, Matt Priddis, Brett Heady, and Dwayne Lamb. All Subiaco boys!

C_I_GAY

Six Brayden Ainsworths

PimentoSandwich

It will be a six way tie for the Brownlow

Ruhwef

Madden, Hird, Watson, Watson, Reynolds and Hutchison.

GrudaAplam

That's mine, too. Graham Moss disappointed to miss the cut but you can't go past Simon Madden.

RodeoTurdClown

Simon Madden (r) Dick Reynolds, Bill Hutchison, Tim Watson, James Hird, Jack Clarke

GrudaAplam

Simon O'Donnell?

RodeoTurdClown

Lol, edited. It was early and I hadn’t had my 3 litres of coffee yet to normalise my brain.

GrudaAplam

Oh, right. I'd thought you'd dragged up someone from the 1890's Golden Era. Simon O'Donnell, former Victorian and Australian all rounder (cricket), played a few games for St Kilda, IIRC.

Frogmouth_Fresh

Scott Wynd as the ruck. Tony Liberatore, Bont, Whitten, West and Hawkins. Bont may be too early to call best 5 but whatever, it’s my 5 picks. Also might need to replace Libba with someone with more outside run, but how can you leave him out? Have West be the main clearance guy and Libba the defensive mid.

Brett-the-charmer

Lina was as better than his boy inside and almost as good as Diesel Williams with his hand pass to outside. Only Sam Mitchell in modern times comes close with that quality. Adapting to become the premier tagged later in his careers Howe’s his bloody mongrel determination

cuntingme

Jolly, Swan, Pendlebury, Buckley, Beams

bfisher91

Probably Nank to Dusty, Cotchin, Campbell, Deledio and Edwards I'd choose older players but it's harder to evaluate how good they'd be without really being familiar with them on anything other than reputation. Ruck is hard for us because we've never had a super dominant ruckman.

Kickingfrog

Clearly you don't remember premiership ruckman, Shaun Grigg! Obvious swap for Nank :D

BusinessPooh

We had Brad Ottens if you want a more recent ruckman.

bfisher91

Yeah I know, and I loved Ottens but he obviously had more success as a ruckman at Geelong. Correct me if I'm wrong but was he ever really our number one ruck? I recall him more playing 2nd tall forward/ruck as we still had Richo and Gale for most of his career.

woodie1717

Luke Jackson tapping it down to five other Luke Jackson’s

nefron55

Ryder, Hayes, Harvey, Stewart, Smith, Goddard.

dwadley

Fuck me just inserting Ryder into our 2009/10 teams would win us flags. He’s such a gun

nefron55

Yup, especially since we lost Gardiner in the '10 final. Brutal.

dazedjosh

Darren Jolly in the ruck supported by Adam Goodes, Paul Kelly, Josh Kennedy, Brett Kirk, and Dan Hannebery. Luke Parker, Jude Bolton, Ryan O'Keefe, and Jarrad McVeigh all unlucky to miss out.

slowbbq

Where is the love for Bob Skilton?

dazedjosh

Too far back in the past. I've been supporting the Swans since my first game in 92 so I decided to restrict my list to that period.

Brett-the-charmer

Barry Round?

Priestess-Of-Winter

I feel Parker is super underrated

nu-jood

Otters Selwood Bartel Johnson Corey Ablett sounds pretty unreal to me…

AFLlegend456

Paul Salmon to Matthews, Crawford, Platten, Hodge and S.Mitchell

luke_hawks876

I wanna say McKernan tapping to Cunners, Stevens and Boomer with Rawlings and Wells on the wing?

Priestess-Of-Winter

As a sad Carlton fan Kreuzer, Cripps, Walsh, Judd, Murphy and maybe Mitch Robinson for that extra edge

rei154

Salmon tapping to Hodge, Platten, Lethal, Crawf and Tuck/Smitchell/Bucky.
