Chaisa

Feel like shit, just want our fast paced corridor game back

chngminxo

I miss The Chad

karma_dumpster

Apparently Jai Newcombe has been spotted after the game walking the streets of Sydney, just fucking tackling random Sydneysiders.

bohemian_wombat

>Apparently Jai Newcombe has been spotted after the game walking the streets of Sydney, just fucking tackling random Sydneysiders. Word is just in he has taken down a traffic light and there is nothing but chaos on the roads.

Maximumlnsanity

He's tackling the cars at the intersection to keep the traffic flowing properly

Korasuka

His glares at drivers works 50% more efficiently than traffic light sequences.

Lego14

Bro he just wants a cuddle… Someone give the man a cuddle

karma_dumpster

Social distancing for Jai Newcombe is 1.5mm.

champagnencampaign

CHOs hate him

gives_free_rimjobs

Watch yourself up there Sydney fans, there's an angry kid looking to spoon anything in red and white

proudlysydney

i need a hug, I’d take it

Maximumlnsanity

Relatable

proudlysydney

Rumour has it Queensland’s Origin team are making contact with him as we speak

CaptainVoltz

Most tackles in a debut game! What a beast!

PointOfFingers

I am glad someone is tackling the homeless problem in sydney

occupy07

Heard hes working as a bouncer at the casino tonight

dmaddo

Amarety, amity, amnesty, amaretto and arimty were all good tonight

Radalict

Don't forget Bell. BT definitely called him Bell at one point when he was describing the Swans forwards. "Buddy in the middle, Papley on the right, ... *silence*... Bell on the left". Then the screen pans 100m back to the contest where Bell actually is and BT says "Bell in at the ball" Not sure if racist or just dumb.

Maximumlnsanity

I gave him the benefit of the doubt on that one, he'd make the same mistake with 2 white players because he's shit at his job

Bitchbettahavmahoney

That's the problem, he's cloaked in this cloud of incompetence so you never really know his true motives.

kingkepler

why not both?

___TheIllusiveMan___

Umpires are going to cop a lot of hate on social media tonight Why the hell would anyone want to be an umpire?

OldMegabattimus

Do not understand why the AFL surfaces free kick counts. All it does is feed the anti umpire bias that exists among many AFL supporters and fans.

IDreamofHeeney

Fantasy games count free kicks so even if they did hide it, it wouldn’t be hard to figure out. I do agree with you though, it’s doesn’t help

sharkfinblues

Surfaces?

Psychotic_Bear

ive got no idea, and they dont deserve abuse, but the crop we've had for the last few weeks have genuinely been ameteurish. not saying they were biased, just a bit shit.

Korasuka

Umpiring departments have said they've had a lot of difficulty bringing in new umpires. If enough aren't progressing through to the AFL then the league will have a difficult decision on its hands when in 10+ years time there mightn't be enough umpires for all AFL games. The worst, yet perhaps a necessary consequence, would be games delayed or the quality of umpiring worsens due to forced use of state league umps leading to drops in attendances.

Sids1188

I doubt they wouldn't have enough to fill AFL games. Might not have enough for local and state leagues, and the AFL umpires might become entry level positions though. Not a whole lot better.

conreddits

Grass roots investment into Umpiring is needed, and also current umpires should have their roles be full time and compensated well, otherwise we'll see the quality of Umpiring decline

shocking_red_4

checking out the Swans facebook page. it's ugly.

Maximumlnsanity

>Why the hell would anyone want to be an umpire? The shit part is that this sort of stuff stops new umpires coming up and we badly need new umps to replace these terrible bunch of clowns

Svetree

This subreddit is going to melt when the Hawks backline has both Sicily and Frost in it

Dazzaricious

What is it with Hawthorn defenders where you can't tell if they're blondes or rangas and white line fever?

FenerBoarOfWar

It just further proves the existence of God.

Darththorn

If you need further proof, my power came back on for the first time in days about an hour before the game tonight. Clarko is god.

identikit12

Ah yes, CJ does have that effect

Korasuka

We'll accept it just to bring Richmond down. Hawtron can be like Hydra's Winter soldiers. Kept on a very tight lead and used only as Hydra wants.

quackerz77

Pre-game: how the hell do these Hawks get a Friday night game? Post-game: how the hell do these umps get a Friday night game? In all seriousness though well played Hawks, impressive win

CaptainStraya

Sydneys vfl side is going to get some big inclusions next match

___TheIllusiveMan___

>Hawthorn doesn’t wear vertical stripes >Wins Coincidence? I think not!

RaidanRam

You guys should try it

___TheIllusiveMan___

Do we even have one that doesn’t have vertical stripes?

RaidanRam

I doubt it

___TheIllusiveMan___

Apparently we do. According to Footyjumpers.com in the 1982 pre season we wore a black V

bohemian_wombat

Shhhh Kochi is listening.

RaidanRam

Better go looking in Eddies attic for it

PedanticOkra

I just want to say, we were the better team and were much better than we have been. But if I was a Swans supporter I would be spewing at the umpiring.

MillsyMB

It’s definitely conflicting emotions when you were fucked by the umpires but also outplayed. Need this bye to reduce my blood pressure after tonight.

Sgt_Peper

Couldn’t have said it better myself

uselessscientist

You were the better team, 100%

foodbaby02

Take my upvote you fair and reasonable fucker

stavraki

Hawks deserved to win this, but it definitely felt like any opportunities to mount a comeback were stifled by the highly contentious calling. There's some really impressive young talent coming out of the hawks, I suspect with a few more changes to the side it won't be long until they are competing for finals once again.

PedanticOkra

Well, some of our average players had really good games (Moore, Ceglar, O'Brien) and Mitchell and O'Meara played out their skins. Our midfield actually looked competent today, which it hasn't all year. I'm glad that Wingard was quiet-ish and we didn't need to rely on him.

Maximumlnsanity

Ceglar did Hickey's job better than Hickey, he was nuts

Nude-Love

Moore is considered average? He’s our leading goal kicker.

ketronome

Does OMeara have some sort of armour playing?? Literally crashed into a guy and concussed him, and it looked like he didn’t even notice

oliboy345

This is the best I've seen it summed up tonight

sjpato

Hawks were absolutely the better team and deserved the win. Yes the umpires were poor and maybe helped you guys to two goals but the rest was due to the effort and execution by Hawthorn. I doubt that Horse is blaming the umps, Swans need to look at themselves and get better.

PedanticOkra

Oh yea, of course, but I do feel bad. If I was a Swans supporter, it would make it hard to swallow the loss because you'd feel like you didn't have a fair crack at it when the game was in the balance in the first half. Especially when you're challenging for top 4 and coming up against a side that most other supporters would expect to beat this year.

weinertorn

bigboymcevoyyyy

there was a game on tonight?

kyrant

Your username and flair combination is confusing.

uselessscientist

Sneaky double agent

[deleted]

[удалено]

stavraki

Honestly, just get rid of Razor Ray. Man is a serial self-fart sniffer and he was the majority of the problem tonight.

Maximumlnsanity

Razor, Stevic, Meredith, Nicholls, Margetts, honestly we just need a cleanout

Korasuka

Do they have replacement though? Isn't part of the reason some of those guys have been going on for so long because no enough new umpires are coming through?

Maximumlnsanity

Yeah that's part of the problem, we need a cleanout but there's nobody to replace them

Riot_From_The_Couch

I think the umpiring is to the standard the AFL is run at, and that's just depressing

bombcat97

We don't have full time umpires cause all the current umpires are egotistical, self centered fuckwits who don't wanna become full time and lose their cushy weekday jobs.

OldMegabattimus

Yeah look, gonna go ahead and say Hawthorn should 100% keep Mitchell and O'Meara. No point kicking them out for draft picks when they can still put on performances like that. Jiath was also really fucking good and Newcombe looked amazing on debut. Hope Sydney can rebound after the bye. Just did not look switched on at any point tonight.

skwunk1

Don't think O'Meara was ever on the table, has been asbolutely elite this year and has looked a genuine level above the rest of Hawthorn (whenever he's out we look 100x worse, in our two worst losses against Saints and GC, he was missing). Mitchell finally back to his best was great to see and it did seem like had a point to prove, especially early.

Nude-Love

The only reason to move on Mitchell or O’Meara would be if the club thinks they’re stunting Worpel’s growth significantly. Worpel was incredible in place of Mitchell when he broke his leg and has looked directionless since his return.

route-my-lans

They look like they hit the pub fucking hard Thursday night. I know we're having a 'mare season, but boys, after the game!

dazedjosh

Just a fucking terrible all round performance by the boys tonight. Poor with the ball, non existent pressure, zero contested effort, zero defensive effort. Absolutely fucking woeful. At leaat I traded Duke into my fantasy team this week.

DeadGoddo

Looked a bit like we just expected to win, no real effort in the first half especially. Hawks just moved the ball into f50 way to easy

Capt_Procrastination

I'm not the type to point fingers, but I'm putting this result solely on Lewis Taylor being on the field

lumberfun

This man really beat Bont in the rising star award

BIllyBrooks

He used to be such a gun at the Lions, what’s happened?

Fast_Stick_1593

He was never that good, racked up cheap stats but always allergic to tough football. There’s a reason he was always a fringe player at Brisbane and now at Sydney. He has some skills, doesn’t use them enough.

Capt_Procrastination

I feel like it's a confidence thing. Not enough? Too much? Dunno but he's constantly making shit decisions, which isn't great if you're short and not very agile

bombcat97

I've heard from a friend who plays at Southport that he's an egotistical asshole. Constantly yelling at his teammates and talking shit about them when they do things wrong, we actually saw a glimpse of that when he was calling for Amartey to kick it to him

MintyFresh48

Lewis Taylor was never a gun. He had one half decent season, absolutely robbed Bont of the rising star, and has done fuck all ever since.

Chaisa

I'm not sure he was after his first season tbf

Cretin_Detection

Hardwick Frost Impey Day Scrimshaw Jaith That is one fast back 6

Themirkat

Where will Sicily get in

Cretin_Detection

Impey, Scrim or Day moves to a wing.. Or Sicily plays forward!

Themirkat

Sicily taking shots from 50 is so glorious to see

bohemian_wombat

>Where will Sicily get in Hawks have been through [this](https://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/art-and-design/funny-that-20051127-ge1bke.html) before hey.

FenerBoarOfWar

Who do you drop for Sicily?

blueeyedharry

Tim O’Brien. Or anyone really, he’s our best player when he’s on. Day/Impey probably go to a wing. DGB is the one that might come in at some point too, if he’s fit he’ll get a run this year.

Pudrat

Every time we have a shit game before the bye I'm reminded of the Port Adelaide v The Bye video and it gives me hope that at least we aren't that shit. https://youtu.be/qXatqcigUFw

Maximumlnsanity

Dude we play them next wtf are you doing

Pudrat

Just riling up the Bye fans, nothing too serious

MoreThenYouThought

JB gets the correct pronunciation 5 mins later says the name wrong again trying to pronounce it right

smegdaddy

Collingwood had 1 goal to three quarter time against Geelong and still put up the same score as Sydney at home against Hawthorn

Radalict

What a proud day for Collingwood.

smegdaddy

Spot on, it’s definitely less embarrassing for us now

Chaisa

Worst performance since the 2018 EF. Credit to Hawthorn, they completely nullified our attacking options and made us look impotent as fuck, but yeah that was shit. Bye can't come soon enough though.

Sgt_Peper

Hawthorn deserved that. We were awful & the umpires were even worse, but Hawthorn deserved that. Rest up boys & fire up the second half of the season

MoreThenYouThought

Jaith not impressed with the name chat

Crazyripps

I know swans got fucked by the umpires but fuck me this is the first game this year we played good constant footy in all 4QT. Pressure, goal kicking and ball movement great. Swans applied the pressure hard in the 3rd but we managed to hold and we held the hold QT.

gormster

Forget who said it in the match thread but it was something like “umpires are robbing hawks of a great win tonight”. Too true. Could have been a thriller, instead we got… that.

PB_ON_TOAST

Yeah you guys deserved it 100%. Although the umpiring was pretty terrible, you guys outplayed us fair and square.

Tarcolt

The Swans were defs off tonight... For a side that can threaten the top 4 to look like that was bad... But the umpiring had to be the most useless crap I've seen in ages. Swans were on the receiving end to and that might have kept them out of it... certainly took the wind out of 'em. Time to put Ray Chamberlain out to pasture, his shit was fucking cooked tonight.

lolmanic

Its a young side that hasn't found its ability to be consistent yet, we still play either above or below our best, and sometimes both. In the past you could tell you were in for a pretty typical game with the old McVeigh and co crew, they'd tackle hard, grind out wins, etc. This team is still finding its identity, hasn't quite figured out how to work against presses and is about half a step, pass or kick away from that consistency. I would hedge that they're also getting tired and the early season form is going to be harder to implement with the younger bodies. Still, good learning experience and onto the next game

Tarcolt

It's probably a good loss this point in the season, especially before the bye. Good for the young talent to learn to take a loss, but boy oh boy do those young men have some *talent*. I think they're playing the right brand of pressure footy, but just need the momentum and confidence to keep it going for a full game, which is hard (and harder when you're getting nothing from the umps.) Honestly, I think they'll get up over Port after the bye (I think they're a little overrated, especially under pressure.) This one is just a blip on the radar.

lolmanic

Yeah and I think as passionate as Horse is during the game, he's a great mentor off it and can look at this with a calm head. We'll hopefully get a few players back for our structure that will give us a team that resembled the first four rounds. End of the day, it's up to the players to perform and we didn't, so look forward to the next game!

Catharsis1394

Maybe Collingwood and North should take note and also ditch the stripes

smegdaddy

Alright so changes for the second half of the season are: - Quarantine in the week leading up to every game - Play Adelaide - Rotate the stripes 90 degrees

moosewiththumbs

But Geelong lost to Adelaide in round 1...

smegdaddy

Damn can’t believe there’s a flaw in this plan

googsmaster24

Newcombe the future and will day was beautiful !

Darththorn

Jai Newcombe.

rzor89

Duke

Count_Critic

Aren't we all so glad one of the game officials is a recognisable personality that's taking part in the Big Freeze like some kind of celebrity.

uselessscientist

I'm just glad that papley gave him an honest appraisal of his efforts. Razor was particularly abysmal today

LordCosmoKramer

Link? Missed the game fortunately.

Mrchikkin

Razor a bit blunt tonight

AeneasX1

Glad to see the age old rivalry of umps vs commentators reignited

[deleted]

AeneasX1

I was thinking more a battle of who's more crap, but yeah that aswell

Orphanchocolate

Bono my tips are gone

Korasuka

You and I need to write a strongly worded letter to Hawthorn for robbing us. I'll start. *Dearest Alice Stair Clark's son. Yor teem winning robd me off'v my corect tip*

ketronome

Get in there Clarko

buddyboris

What other sport in the world is continuously destroyed by poor umpiring/refereeing? (Not talking about corruption in sport, just lack of officiating talent). Poor viewing to what would otherwise be a good game.

folklore33

Flags being thrown randomly in the NFL is bloody annoying

Radalict

Some of the "unnecessary roughness" calls last season were completely random.

PluggersLeftBall

at least u can review some shit i nthe nfl...

alexLAD

Can I introduce you to VAR in the Premier League

Darththorn

Can I introduce you to VAR in the A-League?

Julz72

I love this comment so much because I've seen it on post match threads in about 5 different sports subreddits

Fast_Stick_1593

NBA officials and 2002 Western Conference Finals, 2006 NBA Finals, 2009 and 2010 NBA Finals all come to mind.

LordCosmoKramer

Some of those were genuinely fixed no?

Fast_Stick_1593

2002 got called out by a crooked referee who went to prison. American Consumer Advocate said Game 6 was the worst officiated game they had ever seen. Mark Cuban got a private investigator to look at 2006 Finals and PI said if he was to sue NBA over it, he would win. NBA had a private meeting with Cuban and he went hush hush about it. Video below sums it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjRcTiwVEwo

gormster

Yeah pretty much all of them eh

RaidanRam

Swans strategy to not have a five goal lead didn’t end up working

Kunaal__Choks

If they stay healthy, Hawthorn will have key backs of Sicily, Day and DGB for 6 plus years. Scary good.

folklore33

Yep and add in CJ, Hardwick and Impey. Good set up

a_kwyjibo

And Scrimshaw

folklore33

How could I forget Birch 2.0

lumberfun

I know the umpiring wasn’t great but it’s not the reason Swans lost. Can’t blame the umpires when you lose by 38 and don’t beat your opponents half time score. Richmond fans were heavily downvoted after losing to Brisbane for complaining about the free kick differential and were told to stop whinging and take the loss

Radalict

Yes Swans were thoroughly outplayed. That doesn't mean that the umpiring wasn't woeful.

oliboy345

I don't think anyone thinks that we should've won, played one of the worst games I've watched this season. But I think we have a licence to be a bit confused about umpiring. Definitely didn't deserve to win tho, hawthorn wanted it more

S_Saed17

Preach

CrabSully

r/AFL can be unbearable sometimes. That match thread got insanely toxic. Y'all need to calm down.

TheRearMech

Just relax, We don’t talk to one another like that. It’s ok.

BIllyBrooks

We don’t talk to each other like that.

frankthefunkasaurus

Swans were insipid all evening but fuck me it looked like Razor loaded up on the hawks before the game

bohemian_wombat

CJ nice and composed and does well with the press. Getting them to repeat it was a nice touch.

InfinitePineapple212

duke for rising star 100%

BIllyBrooks

Take out his nervous kicking, and the fact I think he could be too old, he’d be a cert.

InfinitePineapple212

i think hes only 19 so hes fine in that regard

bohemian_wombat

Got the face of a tough looking 27 year old.

FenerBoarOfWar

Basically Silk's dad at that age.

BIllyBrooks

Is he? For some reason I thought he was 22. Good game, but I don’t think enough for a rising star nod. Kicking wasn’t great, but understanding for game 1.

skwunk1

Built incredibly well for a 19/20 year old tbf.

rei154

From some angles it looks like it'll be his kid being nominated next week.

Peppsy

The difference a day can make

dmaddo

Key points. Bombing the ball to 3v1s doesn't work. We know this from 2017-2020. Stop it. Razor Ray. Papley complains about a iffy htb call. Razor yells at him to "move on". Papley chirps back, Razor pays 3 frees in a row then "misses" an obvious deliberate. Ray just don't talk back to the players and they won't talk back to you. Shut up and umpire. Only thing worse than the umpiring tonight was the commentary. . BT asking the same question 3 times and Hodgey and Duck having to repeat themselves. Amarety, amity, amnesty, amaretto and arimty were all good tonight. JB just do some basic research you twat

Peppsy

Don't talk to the umpire and they won't talk back to you

LukeTheRad

I’m calling it now! Hawthorn 2021 premiers!!!

bohemian_wombat

>I’m calling it now! Hawthorn 2021 premiers!!! You have heard of the May Premiership, but now we can introduce you to the new and improved: #11th of June Premiership.

Themirkat

That mark from Jager gives me goosebumps

SansSoleiil

If the Swans decide to speak out about the quality of umpiring in our matches the past few rounds, I'll happily put in money for the fine. It's been horrifying to watch and incredibly inconsistent.

AllGoaliesAreTrash

AFL probably stoked that Razor Ray is the most trending topic from the game.

Korasuka

I lost my 14 game tipping streak because of this match.

gardz82

If you're harder at the footy you can win games, who knew? We should try this more going forward.

laurensmiithy

As the team 17th on the free kick differential ladder (although this might give us a boost up), we can sympathise with how terrible the umpires were tonight. Week after week we've lost free kicks, normally by a lot, tonight we finally got some luck. But, abusing the umpires doesn't do anything to help, if anything, makes it worse. They were just out hungered.

Croob2

What a wild game of football that was

Peppsy

Josh Morris looks like bad captain america

LakeOval

We were fucking awful, Hawthorn outplayed us from start to finish, Newcombe will tackle a grizzly bear before sunrise just cause, BT is atrocious & Razor Ray can get in the sea cause we got utterly hosed by the whistle boys tonight. That said we sucked and Hawthorn bitchslapped us. We need the bye week big time.

chngminxo

Disappointing. I’m not going to harp on about the umpiring here, everyone has already said what is worth saying, and Hawthorn were clearly the better team. I just have to say, the boys looked cooked. They were far and away from the swans we saw at the beginning of the year and I think the bye couldn’t come at a better time. They looked so slow and tired, hopefully the week off and the addition of Chad and Errol (and Braeden not long after) will bulk up our skills.

mtarascio

Sydney got a rough rub with the umpires. Nothing too egregious just consitent 50/50 60/40 going against them all night. Hawthorn looked good though, I really enjoyed the pressure and having CJ back makes us look a different team.

IrateWizard

Hawks deserved to win, and all the media will be about how good they were, but if the roles were reversed you'd have people demanding a fucking national inquiry into that umpiring performance.

westernvaluessmasher

why would neutrals in the media be more outraged about the swans getting the rub of the green against the hawks than they would be if the hawks got the rub of the green against the swans?

IrateWizard

Oh I didn't mean specifically Sydney or Hawthorn, my point was more that if that umpiring performance was served up against any big Victorian club it would actually gain traction in the media and have column inches devoted to how bad it was, instead it'll just be "oh well they were poor but Sydney were poor too so it's fine".

Radalict

Swans fans who live in Sydney have a real Victorian shaped chip on their shoulder for some reason.

westernvaluessmasher

i see. if it is because hawthorn are victorian, an out of state team getting done over by the umpires against victorian opposition didnt stop there being a national outcry after that brisbane/geelong game earlier in the year

Codyfucksticks

That was one very bad game shaping decision. I think IrateWizard sort of has a point. The Victorian AFL media doubles as the national media to some extent and it inevitably focusses on everything to do with the big vic clubs more, so it’s also going to spend more time talking about them getting a bad run with umps during a game. If you don’t believe that’s true, try listening to the Age RealFooty podcast - 90% of the episodes are about which big Vic club is in crisis. It’s a Victorian paper so of course that’s normal, but it does also double as the national media to some extent.

Durfsurn

Good to see Hawks nick a win here and there. Good signs. Sydney are always going to have these games as a young team.

retsibsi

Lol at Sydney. This will definitely not come back to bite me next Sunday.

PedanticOkra

Nah, I think the Dons will come out angry and belt us to make up for Round 1.

retsibsi

We'll see! Honestly I do expect us to win, but there's still a pretty big part of me that has been trained to fear the worst.

IDreamofHeeney

Forget tonight’s game, when will umpiring ever get sorted? Every week a few teams get absolutely fucked by the umps, it’s ruining footy and the AFL are too stupid to see.

FonkyMonk

It's time to transition to full time professional umpires.

soggystep

Poos and wees surprised me

Korasuka

You should see a doctor.

Maximumlnsanity

I'm fucking over umpires ruining this sport. And before you guys bury me yes Hawthorn were the better team and deserved to win but fuck me

PluggersLeftBall

putth up the posgame thread max i need to fucking vent

Maximumlnsanity

I'd tell you to do it yourself but you've clearly been on the bevs lol

IDreamofHeeney

Can’t blame him, I was down a 6 pack by the third quarter. I definitely needed a few more lmao

Maximumlnsanity

I swear if we keep getting shit officiating in our games I'm gonna eventually start drinking

Johnee83

Sick of hearing the crying about umpiring. It is atrocious every fucking game, it Favor's one side one week, then against them the next. Just accept it and move on. Sydney should of played better, they were shit. Hawks pressure this game is probably the highest I have ever seen it since Clarko joined us. That is why we won. Let's hope we don't go back to the chip around, low pressure, precision skills bull shit.

Dazzaricious

I think we're safe from getting the spoon now. Fuck yeah, the spoonless streak continues.

Julz72

Being shit but not memeworthy is the sweet spot
