Basically, Lapis is someone who's only experience with close relationships is toxic, abusive, and formed exclusively to prevent a dangerous person from hurting anyone but herself. And Peridot is newly disconnected from all she ever admired, and aro/ace unlike all her peers, and she realises this, even feeling like she has to try defy her aversion to be respected (even if a fusion with Garnet isn't romantic or sexual, it may be reminiscent of that to her, and uncomfortable. Maybe Peridot actually has a gem specific orientation that is comparable to human's aro/ace, where she doesn't feel attraction to gem specific interactions like fusion. Afuseable, afusive??) Together, they have an odd but developed relationship. Lapis learns to trust someone, and recognise genuine and healthy signs of change in their behaviour and outlook. She learns that Peridot has changed her entire sense of morality, and would never capture and interrogate her again, even apologising for that. Peridot learns to form a deep and comfortable bond with someone through enjoying her personality and sharing interests. Maybe even more than a friendship, but still within the sense of attraction to another person she is capable of feeling, queer platonic partner (QPP) is usually the term aro/ace people use. And to see a relationship like this developed on a popular family friendly show is huge for representation! And overall, they're just a cute ship, even without all that context.

I used to hate Lapidot, but rewatching the show as an adult I found myself respecting it a lot. I personally like Amethyst x Peridot x Lapis as a poly ship or at least a close (queer platonic?) friendship. Looking back at my ship war days makes me cringe. Now I just ship everybody with everybody 😎
