And How Much Is Wonder Man in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?
The short answer to those questions is yes, and not much. However, we know this information deserves a long answer, so here we go. Nathan Fillion is returning to the Marvel Universe for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and this time not to voice a CGI character. (For those of you who don’t know, in the prison scene, when Quill is approached by this huge monster, who later gets Groot’s branches stuck in his nostrils, that is the guy Fillion voiced. See image below). Director James Gunn, a friend of Fillion’s with a long established relationship (Fillion played the starring role in Gunn’s feature film directorial debut Slither, and a fun cameo as a Christian superhero in Gunn’s follow up Super) seems to enjoy bringing Fillion onboard in at least some capacity in his movies.
And so, according to a report from Comicbook.com, our favorite Firefly / Castle actor will be Wonder Man in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Or rather, he’ll be playing actor Simon Williams, also known by his superhero name, Wonder Man.
Wonder Man was created by Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby back in 1964. He used to be your basic, garden variety scientist who inherited an arms-and-tech firm from his father. But after getting involved in his brother’s embezzling scheme, he was brought down and went to prison. Ultimately, however, he is sprung from the clink by Baron Zemo and his crew Masters of Evil. They imbued him with superpowers and ordered him to help them defeat Avengers. He decided, in the end, to save the Avengers instead, apparently at the cost of his own life. However, he’s merely in a coma, and before he’s buried alive, his brother (now known ad the Grim Reaper) shows up and saves his body. Wonder Man then eventually joins the Avengers for a time, before becoming sick of the violence, and becoming a pacifist and retiring from Superhero-dom to pursue an acting career.
So, how does this all link to Wonder Man in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Well, thanks to Imgur user Johnathan Hunter, we have these images from a local theater in Georgia, where GotG Vol. 2 is currently shooting.
And as you can see in the pictures, Nathan Fillion’s face is on a bunch of different posters, under a marquee advertising a Simon Williams fan festival. All in all, a pretty cool cameo. So, the big question is, are they are trying to tell us something or is this nothing more than a fun cameo? Could Fillion be taking on the role of Wonder Man in future movies? Only time will tell, but for now, it’s good to have just a little more Fillion with our Marvel.
