The X-Files Revival: The Truth is Still Out There
“In 2002, our investigation ceased, but my personal obsession did not,” says Fox Mulder in the beginning of a two-part teaser trailer released by FOX a few days ago.
FOX announced that X-Files will debut with a “special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016 (10:00 – 11:00 PM ET/7:00 – 8:00 PM PT),” right after the NFC Championship game. It will continue its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT). Its first episode set up a series arc that promises “the most evil conspiracy the world has ever known.”
According to Chris Carter, the show’s creator, part of his inspiration for the revival of the series, were recent exposés about government spying. “Every day I look at the newspaper and I see a possible X-Files episode. I did it for a long time and you never quite lose the eye for what would be good X-Files storytelling,” said Carter.
Speaking in Cannes after the World premiere of the revival’s first episode, Carter stated, “We’re trying to be honest with the changes dealing with digital technology: the capability of spying. Clearly we’re being spied on in the US – or at least spying on you – and there seems to be no shame in it.”
Carter went on to say that the revival is “a story about the modern pursuit of science by scientists.”
Why revive the series after thirteen years?
What’s the relationship of Mulder and Scully at this stage?
The return of The X-Files definitely has fans wondering if Mulder and Scully will still have a romantic relationship. At last summer’s Television Critics Association session, FOX confirmed that the two have broken up in the upcoming season.
At Pittsburgh’s Wizard World Comic Con held in September, Duchovny told fans about the state of Mulder’s and Scully’s relationship.
“In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged. I don’t know where it’s going. I really don’t know. I’m trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode . . .”
Mitch Pileggi (Skinner), who was with Duchovny at the time, interjected, “Can we say maybe yet to be determined? Is that appropriate?”
In an interview with THR, meanwhile, Carter talks about how they treat the pair’s relationship. “We do it in an interesting way.” He said, “We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It’s something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie.”
So, does this mean this is the last set of episodes of the X-Files?
This doesn’t mean however, that we won’t be seeing Mulder and Scully after next year’s revival series. Duchovny has admitted on an interview with Entertainment Weekly in May that he is interested in doing more episodes after this new set.
Duchovny stated, “I would be open to doing another cycle. I don’t know that I could do a 20- episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don’t know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn’t bring it back with the idea of ending it.”
How do other actors feel about reprising/taking on their roles on The X-Files?
While attending Fan Expo Canada in Toronto earlier this year, Gillian Anderson joked, “They came to me and said they were thinking about [bringing ‘The X-Files’ back], and I thought, ‘This is a bad idea.”
Anderson admitted however, “When I watched the first episode, my reaction was, ‘Man, is this enough?’” Then, she related what Simon Pegg, said to her, “What they want is exactly what they got to begin with. It’s like comfort food. They want what you originally gave them and that will be enough.”
Anderson went on to say, “And that’s what you’re going to get. Hopefully, you guys will be happy, because that’s what it’s all about.”
Mitch Pileggi on the other hand, announced his return to the series, tongue-in-cheek, through Twitter on April, saying, “Walter Skinner will once again be getting all grumpy and bitchy with his two wayward kids.”
William B. Davis, is also coming back as the Smoking Man. In an interview with Den of Geek, Davis revealed how he felt about reprising his role, saying, “As an actor, it’s good for me, it’s good for my career and it’s stimulating. I had no hesitation, I would have been quite disappointed if the show had been done without me and I think a lot of fans would have been disappointed as well.”
Having said that – What are fans saying about The X-Files Revival?
There are a number of X-Files fan sites on the internet where everything about The X-Files is being shared and discussed. There is one site (www.xfilesnews.com) however, that keeps X-Philes excited for the upcoming season. It has a timer counting down the days to the first episode of X- Files Revival.
The X-Files which originally aired in September 1993 became a global hit during its nine-season run. It spawned a comic book series and two feature films, The X-Files: Fight the Future, in 1998 and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008. The show won 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award.
The new six-episode season brings back Duchovny, Anderson, Pileggi and Davis together with Annabeth Gish as FBI Agent Monica Reyes; and Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood as the Lone Gunmen. Robert Patrick who played Agent Doggett in the previous episodes of The X-Files is no longer part of the new series.
Joel McHale plays new character, Tad O’Malley, a conservative newsman who becomes Mulder’s unlikely ally. Other newcomers are Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose who play younger federal agents (Agent Miller and Agent Einstein, respectively); Annet Mahendru plays Sveta, an alien abductee, and Kumail Nanjiani. With a line up like that we can expect great things from The X-Files revival.
