What is “How to Survive an Alien Abduction: And Other Useful Information” About?
This 232 page book is divided into seven main parts, with a total of thirty five chapters. It is written in the first person perspective featuring a narration style of writing. The first part describes the title itself and talks about alien abductions: where they are most likely to occur and how best to ensure that you are not the unfortunate person picked by the aliens. It also includes tips on how to survive in case you are unable to escape them. The rest of the book talks about Jim Griffin’s encounters with different creatures and phenomena widely believed to be mythical.
These include an account of how he came face to face with Bigfoot, sharks in a swimming pool, a werewolf and murderous vampires. He gives the reader a series of defense tips and survival tactics in case they come across any of these creatures which his main character persona truly believes are real. Despite the somewhat chilling nature of the topics and encounters he discusses, Jim Griffin manages to keep it lighthearted with plenty of humor and satire incorporated within the sci-fi theme of the book. The book is both entertaining and educational and is a must read for those who believe in mythical creatures and urban legends.
About the Author
“How to Survive an Alien Abduction: And Other Useful Information,” was written by Jim Griffin between 2006 and 2008. Griffin was born in 1967 in Portland, Oregon, and attended Franklin High School until his graduation in 1985. He joined the United States Marine corps in 1986 where he served for a little over four years, after which he took early retirement and was discharged from the service. After his discharge, he worked at a couple of oil companies under different capacities for fifteen good years. He also went back to school and got a degree in business management.
Griffin has had a passion for literature and writing for as far back as he can remember and eventually decided to actively pursue writing as a career. He is an adventurous spirit with a great love of the outdoors. In fact, most of the content in this book is from things he saw, heard, learned or experienced while on his many different expeditions and explorations. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
Inspiration and Reason for Writing
In the book’s foreword, Brandon Douglas gives a brief description of events and encounters that led him to endorse the book. While on an African safari, he claims to have seen the legendary creature known as The Chupacabra.
In an attempt to capture the creature for closer examination, he lost three members of his entourage. This, he feels, could have been avoided had all the members of his team been adequately prepared and equipped with the right defense tips. This was also the case when he came into contact with deadly rednecks.
Despite the fact that most people today believe that the creatures in his book are imaginary, Jim Griffin felt that they should be educated on how to keep themselves safe should they ever encounter these creatures, simply as a precautionary measure. This is the basic inspiration and reason for writing “How to Survive an Alien Abduction: And Other Useful Information.”
