A Red Sonja TV Show Could Be a Lot of Fun
In the recent years, it has been quite popular to adapt comic books into both movies and TV shows. While some have been very good and critically acclaimed, such as Arrow, The Flash, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Gotham, some have hit the ground with a resounding thud, like Constantine, Birds of Prey, Mutant X and both Ghost Riders. It is now being rumored that Red Sonja might be up for a TV show adaptation, of the R-rated or “Mature” variety, much like Starz’s Spartacus or HBO’s Game of Thrones. Basically, there will be a lot of blood and gore, followed by gratuitous scenes of sex and nudity, all mixed up with swords and sorcery. Undoubtedly, many fans of the genre will be very pleased if these rumors turn out to be true.
According to the rumors, the series will be developed by Bryan Singer (known for the X-men movie franchise), along with Luke Lieberman and Jason Taylor, who currently own the rights to Red Sonja. The production company will be Singer’s Bad Hat Harry.
The comic book character Red Sonja was created in 1973 as part of the Conan universe, and was loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino, a short story character by the original Conan creator Robert E. Howard. In the original story, she was raped by a gang of thieves, who also murdered her whole family, so she gains powers from the goddess Scathach on condition that she may never lie with a man again unless he defeats her in a fight.
There have been numerous attempts to adapt the comic book into both a movie and a TV show, such as the unsuccessful 1985 movie, starring Brigitte Nielsen as Red Sonja and Arnold Schwarzenegger as High Lord Kalidor. Hopefully, they’ll be able to do Red Sonja justice this time.
