New Battlestar Galactica Movie May Finally Be Happening

A new Battlestar Galactica movie has been in development for at least two now, following an announcement from Universal that they had brought a writer on board to kick things into gear. After that news, however, fans were left waiting for any additional word on the project, and it began to seem like maybe the project had been shelved.

Then, back in February, Universal put the idea back in everyone’s minds that they were once again ready to move forward with the project. And now, finally, it’s been revealed that they’ve brought on writer Lisa Joy (scribe and co-creator on HBO’s new western sci-fi miniseries Westworld) to put together the script. In addition, Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine, Hunger Games: Catching Fire) is reportedly in talks to direct the movie, though if he does come onboard the project, it would likely happen after he reteams with Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence for thriller Red Sparrow.

As of now, it’s unknown if the new Battlestar Galactica movie would be more in line with the original 1978 TV series (which some people have accused of varying degrees of cheesiness) or Syfy’s 2003’s reimagining of the universe from Ronald D. Moore, or even an entirely new take on the world. If they stick with a previously established series, our guess would be the 2003 series, not only because it’s more recent in people’s mind, but generally accepted to be a better series than the original, with TIME magazine even ranking it as one of the 100 greatest TV shows of all-time.

Actor Richard Hatch, who played Apollo in the original series, and Tom Zarek in most recent one, said he was in favor of a new Battlestar Galactica movie, and that he thinks the film would have a huge audience. One thing we do know is that if this new BSG movie happens, it needs to have at least a cameo from Hatch, so he can achieve a Battlestar Galactica hat trick.

I just hope they design the robots to look cooler than either of the original series. I liked parts of both versions as well as hated parts of both.

The first series was limited and extremely cheesy. The 2004 was more relevant with some fierce storytelling.
I hope they stick more to the 2004 version but take it to a new level. The cylons need to stay human and the solder centurions need an upgrade.
Remember stay away from 78 it’s too old take the 2004 series to a new level.
Richard hatch needs to be heavily involved and if they need another advisor… I’m here 🙂
