There has been at least one previous attempt to produce a War of the Worlds TV series.
Yeah, you read the headline right, MTV is developing a War of the Worlds TV series based on H.G. Wells classic tale of alien invasion. And who better to handle it than the Teen Wolf creatives? I mean, it’s been going strong for 6 seasons, right? Right?
More Details on the War of the Worlds TV Series
OK, so, details are pretty scarce at this point, including on any potential cast. But here’s what we know:
- Though it’s based on the classic H.G. Wells novel, it’s also being described as “a contemporary drama series.“
- The adaptation (probably meaning at least the pilot) will be written by Andrew Cochran, a former Teen Wolf writer.
- Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis will be serving as an executive producer for the series. No word yet on if either Cochran or Davis will be serving as a showrunner.
Previous War of the Worlds Adaptations
There have been many adaptations of the novel in the past, at least one of them as a TV series, so it’s not surprising to see someone returning to the well. Without a doubt, the most famous of the adaptations was Orson Welles epic 1938 radio adaptation, in which he presented the story as a series of fake news bulletins about an actual Martian invasion. It was so convincing that Welles created a panic among listeners who actually believed it was real news. (I believe Welles later tried to sell many of them a bridge in Brooklyn.)
So, what do you think? Is this something the MTV team can pull off? Or are we headed for disaster?
