MTV’s Teen Wolf Team Tackles War of the Worlds TV Series

There has been at least one previous attempt to produce a War of the Worlds TV series.

Yeah, you read the headline right, MTV is developing a War of the Worlds TV series based on H.G. Wells classic tale of alien invasion. And who better to handle it than the Teen Wolf creatives? I mean, it’s been going strong for 6 seasons, right? Right?

More Details on the War of the Worlds TV Series

OK, so, details are pretty scarce at this point, including on any potential cast. But here’s what we know:

  • Though it’s based on the classic H.G. Wells novel, it’s also being described as “a contemporary drama series.
  • The adaptation (probably meaning at least the pilot) will be written by Andrew Cochran, a former Teen Wolf writer.
  • Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis will be serving as an executive producer for the series. No word yet on if either Cochran or Davis will be serving as a showrunner.

Previous War of the Worlds Adaptations

There have been many adaptations of the novel in the past, at least one of them as a TV series, so it’s not surprising to see someone returning to the well. Without a doubt, the most famous of the adaptations was Orson Welles epic 1938 radio adaptation, in which he presented the story as a series of fake news bulletins about an actual Martian invasion. It was so convincing that Welles created a panic among listeners who actually believed it was real news. (I believe Welles later tried to sell many of them a bridge in Brooklyn.)

Otherwise, the other popular / well-known adaptations are the 1953 Oscar-Winning (for Best Effects) version from director Byron Haskin and the 2005 War of the Worlds from Steven Spielberg.

So, what do you think? Is this something the MTV team can pull off? Or are we headed for disaster?
