Netflix Gets Into The Business Of Mocking Old Movies

Still from an MST3K episode - New MST3k Netflix series announced

Last year, MST3K creator Joel Hodgson ran a Kickstarter campaign (including a telethon hosted during the final five hours of the campaign) to revive the series, with a “modest” initial goal of $2 million, which would fund three starter episodes. However, 48,270 backers stepped up to pledge $5,764,229, and combined with an additional $600,000 raised outside Kickstarter, Hodgson was able to raise enough to produce an entire 14-episode season, including a new holiday special. Now, streaming giant Netflix has announced that they’ve picked up the new season of MSTK3K. That’s right, we’re getting an MST3K Netflix series. Which gives us much hope that the series will continue past this 14 episode revival.

Casting and Writers for the MST3K Netflix Series

The series will feature many of the original cast, along with some new additions. Bill Corbett will be returning as Brain Guy in a guest starring capacity, as will Kevin Murphy as Professor Bobo, and Mary Jo Pehl as Pearl Forrester. Comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn will be taking over the roles of Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo. Felicia Day (The Guild) will be joining the cast as Kinga Forrester, the daughter of the original MST3K bad guy, Dr. Clayton Forrester. Comedian Patton Oswalt is also set to make guest appearances as one of Kinga’s henchmen. Finally, Jonah Ray will be jumping into the mix as Jonah, the latest person held prisoner and forced to endure bad movies aboard the Satellite of Love. Felicia Day, via Twitter, had already previously promised to “terrorize the hell” out of Jonah Ray.

Oh, and there may be some additional star-power showing up in the series from time to time.  Hodgson has said that Jack Black, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, Jerry Seinfeld, and Mark Hamill have all expressed interest in cameo appearances in upcoming episodes.

At the same time the Netflix pickup was announced, it was also revealed that Community creator Dan Harmon and Community star Joel McHale would be joining the writing staff, under head writer Elliott Kalan. Bill Corbett and Mary Jo Pehl will also serve on the writing staff along with roles on the show.

Possible Release Date for the MST3K Netflix Series

Production began on the new episodes this past January 4, 2016, and though a firm release date hasn’t been set, the goal is to have the episodes ready later this year, or early next year. So, how about it? Are you excited for the MST3K Netflix series pickup? What was your favorite movie from the original run? I go back and forth between Cave Dwellers (How much Keeffe is in this movie anyway? Mile’s O’Keeffe…) and Pod People (Huzzah!) And what movie would you have them take on if you could pick? Also, let’s hope this pick-up means that eventually, Netflix will get the rights to stream the entire series.
