The Mistborn: The Final Empire movie adaptation has not landed a director or any cast yet.
It’s a good time to be a lot of things right now, from a comic-book fan (with waves of comics pouring out onto the public, and the MCU and DCEU cranking out movies at an incredible rate), to a sci-fi fan, and more. Well, getting a little more specific, things are also looking pretty rosy for Brandon Sanderson fans. Back in October, Variety reported that a group called DMG Entertainment had acquired the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s ‘Cosmere’ Universe, and would be moving forward on adaptations for both novels in ‘The Stormlight Archives‘ and the ‘Mistborn‘ series. Then just recently, we got news that his ‘science fiction detective’ short story Snapshot (which arrives next month) had already been picked up for a movie adaptation. And now Deadline is reporting that they’ve found a writer for the Mistborn: The Final Empire movie adaptation.
Cosmere Universe? Mistborn?
OK, cards on the table (whoa… three aces, dude…), I haven’t had a chance to read Sanderson’s Mistborn or Stormlight series, so I’m not familiar with them. But, as I understand it, the books are (or will be, in the case of planned sequels) a mixture of sci-fi and fantasy that unfold across a number of different worlds and different time periods, but they’re all connected by a system of magic that is core to the plot.
In the case of the Mistborn series, it was apparently planned as a “trilogy of trilogies” (though it’s grown, adding at least one additional series), with the first trilogy (of which Mistborn: The Final Empire is the first book) set in a “medieval dystopian future” on a world called Scadrial, where supernatural mists cloud the air each and every night. Apparently, the plan is to do a second Mistborn trilogy set in a modern, urban setting and then a third Mistborn trilogy in a more futuristic, super sci-fi setting.
OK, So Who Was the Writer Already?
F. Scott Frazier, who’s most recent scripting efforts can be currently enjoyed in theaters in the form of xXx: the Return of Xander Cage, has been tapped to handle the Mistborn: The Final Empire movie adaptation.
Wait, did I say things were going well for Brandon Sanderson fans? (I keed, I keed. xXx 3 was at the very least, superior to both of the movies that came before.) Apparently, as Frazier begin his scripting process, writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are set to deliver their initial draft of the first book in the Stormlight Archive series.
So, who’s ready for some misty movies?
