Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Talks Solo Black Widow Movie

Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow -

Is a Solo Black Widow Movie in Our Future?

With the recent success of Deadpool ($362 million domestically, another $399 million internationally) and Captain America: Civil War ($179 million domestic opening weekend, an additional $494 million in two weekends internationally), it’s no wonder that Marvel continues to greenlight solo movies for many of its more popular characters. And strong female superheroes are rapidly growing in popularity, with many of them grabbing starring roles in upcoming movies and TV shows, such as Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp, Jessica Jones in the Netflix’s series of the same name, and Captain Marvel in three years’ time.

With that in mind, and given that Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, was first introduced 6 years ago in Iron Man 2 (“I want one“), the fact that we still don’t have a solo Black Widow movie is more than a little disappointing, especially as she is one of the fan favorites. However, it sounds like that will be changing, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige during a recent Q&A with Deadline:

We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned [Falcon, War Machine, Black Widow and Hawkeye] I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.”

When asked why a solo Black Widow movie, Feige added, “we think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise.”

Black Widow is one of the primary female characters in Marvel Cinematic Universe who started it all and one of the first to appear as a superheroine, so we definitely feel that she deserves her own badass solo Black Widow movie. So, comic fans, what baddie would you like to see the Black Widow face off against in her own movie?
