Mads Mikkelsen’s Rogue One Role Accidentally Revealed
We all knew that Mads Mikkelsen’s Rogue One role in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would be interesting. But like most details for the upcoming movie, information is closely guarded and hard to come by. However, due to the recent efforts of many Bothan spies who DIDN’T die to bring us this information (OK, fine, no Bothans were involved…), we now finally get some details about his character.
Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale) has been pretty tight-lipped about his role but did let a juicy piece of information slip out during an interview with SkyOne, regarding his character in director Gareth Edward’s movie. SPOILERS, just in case you don’t want to know anything about the plot.
“Rogue One, let’s do that one, and I can say absolutely nothing about it. It’s the very first one, it’s before anything you’ve ever seen in the Star Wars universe…I wasn’t really sure whether I was wearing a Storm Trooper outfit or anything like that at that point. I read the script and it was very beautiful and Felicity [Jones] is playing this lovely, strong woman. I play her…father. That’s too much, I’m sorry.”
That was definitely an interesting thing to let slip. So, Mikkelsen will be playing Jyn Erso’s father. And then, in an Evening Standard interview, he revealed another small detail:
“I spend a lot of time with [Jones] and she’s a wonderful actress. I play her dad at the time of Felicity and I play her dad when she’s younger, so we jump back and forth in time.”
Which raises a bunch of other questions. As implied by the trailer, Jyn has been on her own for quite some time. So why did her father leave her? And will he be playing a “good guy” or a “bad guy”?
OK, time for a little speculation and more possibly spoiler-ish type material. So, and this is purely speculation at this point, the role that rumors have Mikkelsen most pegged for is the scientist / architect behind designing the Death Star plans. On a gut level, that actually makes sense to me. Hollywood loves a good twist, and it makes for some great conflict for the main character. Now, if that is true, it still doesn’t necessarily align him with the good or bad side. He could be a good scientist abducted by the Empire and forced to design the Death Star (hence his absence in Jyn’s life.). Or he could be tapping into his inner Dark Side, and have willingly abandoned Jyn and joined them in order to ensure the Empire’s dominance. And both of those options present many intriguing possibilities. Maybe the reason Jyn decides to take the mission is she finds out about her father and wants some payback. Or to rescue him. Or maybe she doesn’t know about his involvement at all, but as she leads the team to the plans, he’s the inside man that helps them get the plans out. Or… OK, I’d better stop. I could spend all day on this.
Personally, if this does pan out, I’d lean more toward the “abducted by the Empire” route, and that Mikkelsen is playing a conflicted good guy. Mikkelsen also revealed in the Evening Standard interview that there will be a mix of classic and new characters, which should be fun. So, what do you think of Mads Mikkelsen’s Rogue One role?
