UPDATE: Disney Shares First Photo of the Han Solo Movie Cast

The Millennium Falcon flying over the surface of a planet - Han Solo movie news

The Han Solo Movie is currently targeting a 2018 release date.

The Han Solo movie started shooting (first … and no, that joke will never get old) this past January 30th. And now, Disney has given a first look at the primary cast, though sadly, they’re not in costume.

Still, it’s nice to see them all gathered in one place. The photo shows Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), Emilia Clarke (role not revealed), Woody Harrelson (reportedly a mentor figure for Han), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (a “CG-driven” character), and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. The other two people in the photo that you may not recognize are the directors, Phil Lord (next to Glover) and Christopher Miller (below Harrelson). Thandie Newton, who recently joined the cast, is not featured in the photo.

Han Solo Movie News Update 2-11-17: Thandie Newton In Talks to Join Han Solo Movie in Mystery Role

Thandie Newton, who is enjoying a bit of a career resurgence thanks to her strong work as part of the cast of HBO’s Westworld, is in talks to joins the cast of the upcoming Han Solo movie, according to THR. Sadly, as with most Star Wars related news, most of the information, in this case, any further details about the character Newton would be playing, is being jealously guarded, so that’s all the information about Newton’s involvement that’s known so far.

Han Solo Movie News Update 2-18-17: The Han Solo Movie May Be Gaining a CG Character

According to a report from Variety, actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (gaining some heat for her performance in the Amazon series Fleabag) is in talks to join the now-shooting Han Solo movie in a key role.

Though a character name or description hasn’t been revealed, the role would reportedly be a ‘CGI-driven performance’ and a significant part of the ensemble, similar to Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO role in the recent Rogue One. She’d be joining Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as a ‘mentor’ figure to Solo, and Emilia Clarke in an unspecified role.

Han Solo Movie News Update 1-31-17: The Han Solo Movie Has Started Shooting First

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s stand-alone Han Solo movie has officially started shooting as of yesterday. And because he’s got a good sense of humor, and is on the correct side of the Han/Greedo shooting debate, Miller announced the news with a jokinf reference to the debate.

However, the callback to the Mos Eisley cantina showdown isn’t the only joke on the slate, with Miller also giving the standalone Han Solo movie the working title of Star Wars: Red Cup, a reference to the popular red Solo party cups, which Miller referenced previously when it was revealed he and Lord would be directing the Han Solo movie back in July 2015:

So far, plot details are being kept under wraps, but with solid directors, an interesting cast including Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson, and a script by father-son duo Jon and Lawrence Kasdan (with Lawrence being a longtime go-to Star Wars guy, having co-written The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens), I’m definitely looking forward to the Han Solo movie.

(Also, just a quick note about the whole Han / Greedo debate. Han didn’t shoot first because Greedo never had a chance to shoot. Han’s the only one who shot, so it should actually be simply, ‘Han Shot.’)

Han Solo Movie News Update 1-11-17: Han Solo To Learn Smuggling From Woody Harrelson?

It’s official! StarWars.com is reporting that Woody Harrelson has signed on to the as yet untitled Han Solo movie. This matches up with previous reports teasing this possibility. Han Solo movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the way they’ll be introduced for at least the next decade) said they’re thrilled to be working with Harrelson, saying that “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique.” More importantly, they also add that Harrelson is “very good” at ping pong.

Interestingly, however, StarWars.com doesn’t specify what his role will be, where previous reports suggested Harrelson would be playing the role of Solo’s mentor. So for now, we can only speculate. But Harrelson’s addition to the cast is awesome, and I’m getting very excited for this movie.

Han Solo Movie News Update 1-3-17: I Guess Han Solo Had To Learn How to Smuggle Somewhere

A couple of days ago, Making Star Wars reported that the current May 25, 2018, release date for the as of yet untitled Han Solo movie, may be shifting to a December 13, 2018, release date, in part due to the monumental December success both The Force Awakens and Rogue One have enjoyed. Now, Variety is reporting that the movie is potentially eyeing adding veteran actor Woody Harrelson to the cast, as Han Solo’s mentor.

Other sources are referring to Harrelson’s involvement being in the ‘early talks’ stage, and the release date shift is definitely not confirmed yet, so for now, we’ll file both of these in the ‘maybe’ category. We probably won’t have to wait long to hear more on Harrelson’s involvement, as according to the Variety article, the movie is set to start shooting this month.

So, what does everyone think? If this goes through, it would add another sci-fi notch to Harrelson’ belt, who played a key role in the Hunger Games franchise and is set to face off against Caeser in The War For the Planet of the Apes.

Han Solo Movie News Update 11-18-16: Is There Room For Dragons in the Millennium Falcon?

So, there aren’t a lot of details yet, but StarWars.com has just revealed that actress Emilia Clarke is joining the stand-alone Han Solo movie. As far as her character and/or role in the movie, all we get for now is this:

Clarke’s role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.

I’m sure more will be along soon.

Han Solo Movie News Update 10-21-16: Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) Just Was Confirmed For the Role of Young Lando Calrissian in the 2018 Han Solo Star Wars Spin-off

Donald Glover, award-winning actor and writer, (also Grammy-nominated rapper Childish Gambino) officially landed the role of young Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars Han Solo spin-off.

What is the Spin-Off About?

The spin-off, which takes place years before the events of any of the original films, will follow the fast and dangerous lives of scoundrel smugglers Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich and Lando Calrissian, played by Glover who was just announced to have gotten the role earlier today (October 21st) on the official Star Wars website.

This announcement confirmed the months of rumors pinning him as Disney’s number one choice for the role of young Lando, to which Glover responded saying that he’d love to be a part of the franchise he’s loved since childhood, even saying, “It’s like the bible” in an interview with Time Magazine. The as-of-yet untitled film will be directed by Phil Lord (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, How I Met Your Mother) and Christopher Miller (Son of Zorn, How I Met Your Mother) a dynamic duo who’ve worked together to create many hilarious and heart-warming adventures.

Whether you’re into sci-fi or not, there’s no way you haven’t heard of Darth Vader; he’s become a household name. Intimidating, cold-hearted, conniving and with a nightmarish voice to boot — he’s the embodiment of evil, and everyone knows it. Considering Vader’s image, it’s no surprise that his upcoming reappearance in Rogue One is so highly anticipated.

But aside from seeing [Click here to read more…]

Glover’s acting career began with the hilarious city college sitcom, Community, in which he played Troy Barnes, one of the main characters, up until 2014 when the show died. Recently, he played a key role in the award-winning film adaptation, The Martian. In the directing duo’s statement on casting Glover as Lando, he said, “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations.”

Though this role will certainly have a huge positive effect on Glover’s life, Lucasfilm extended their condolences, saying, “we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.” They’re joking, of course, but there is no doubt hordes of fans will definitely alter the comic-con experience.

Han Solo Movie News Original Post 3-18-16: Who Do You Want to Play Young Han Solo?

Disney started its search for the actor who would play young Han Solo a long time ago (and probably in galaxies far far away), and they started with the astonishing number of 2,500 excited actors who wanted the main role. It was one of the biggest casting calls ever, but they had to narrow down the number a bit. As it turns out, Disney’s shortlist for this role primarily boils down to eight names, with these three appearing to be in the lead: Taron Egerton, Jack Reynor, and Alden Ehrenreich
