The Trailer for This Russian Superhero Movie Guardians Looks … Super
So, it’s no secret that Superhero movies are big business. Four of the ten largest money earners at the American box office are Superhero movies, and three of the top ten worldwide are Superhero movies. (As a side note, expand that qualifier to Sci-Fi movies, and nine out of the top ten American earners and six out of the top ten worldwide earners qualify. All I’m saying is people like Sci-Fi.) But based on the recently released trailer for Russian superhero movie Guardians (In Russian “Защитники”), Americans won’t have a corner on the market for much longer.
Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan has decided to jumpstart the basically non-existent Russian superhero scene, especially with Marvel and DC superhero’s taking all the glory. Anton Pampushnyy will play the role of a Wildman Arsus, a badass werebear (yeah, that’s right, a WEREBEAR) who is armed with a minigun and is a fearless warrior. Sanzhar Madiev’s role will be that of a Windman Khan, a fast martial artist who uses his blades to cut through enemies. Sebastien Sisak will be Landman Ler, who is able to manipulate all forms of earth, but also uses a flail to fight his adversaries. And finally, Alina Kiziyarova will play as Waterwoman Xenia, who can control water, but also transform into it. The four of them will make up the Guardians, who fight against August Kuratov (played by Stanislav Shirin), in his attempt to create an army of clones to help him rule over the world.
Here’s the official synopsis: During the Cold War, a secret organization “Patriot” has created a squad of superheroes, which included participants from various Soviet republics. For years, the heroes had to hide their identity, but in hard times, they must show themselves again.
Take a look at the trailer that was released just a couple of days ago. We think it looks awesome, and it’s exciting to see other countries starting to craft cool Superhero movies.
Russian superhero movie Guardians is being released by Ascension Media and Red Thread Pictures and is set for release in Russia in February 2017. The sequel for this movie is already in the works (confident much?), titled Guardians 2, with Turbo Films, the Chinese distributor for the first movie.
One final note. For a movie that looks as slick as Guardians, you might expect a pretty sizeable budget. After all, American superhero movies routinely have 150 – 200 million dollar budgets. The first Avengers cost 220 million, and Age of Ultron ran a cool 250 million. So how much is Guardians setting back its investors? A reported 12 – 15 million. That’s probably the craft services budget for Captain America: Civil War.
