Who Do You Want to Play Young Han Solo?
Disney started its search for the actor who would play young Han Solo a long time ago (and probably in galaxies far far away), and they started with the astonishing number of 2,500 excited actors who wanted the main role. It was one of the biggest casting calls ever, but they had to narrow down the number a bit. As it turns out, Disney’s shortlist for this role primarily boils down to eight names, with these three appearing to be in the lead: Taron Egerton, Jack Reynor, and Alden Ehrenreich.
Egerton is a young Welsh actor who has a small but growing resume, but made a splash last year in the starring role of hit film Kingsman: The Secret Service. He’s also had roles in movies Legend, and Eddie the Eagle, and will also play Robin Hood in the upcoming movie Robin Hood: Origins.
Jack Reynor, 24, is an Irish actor, famous for his role of Shane Dyson in the Transformers movies, starting with Transformers: Age of Extinction, and following into the upcoming Transformers 5. His role in What Richard Did was critically acclaimed, and he won the best actor prize at the Irish film and television awards for it.
Alden Ehrenreich is an American actor, the third option for the role of Han Solo. He has played in several movies, the most noted of which is Hail, Caesar, a the recent Coen Brothers comedy, where he had the role of the singing Western film star Hobie Doyle.
Other names on the shortlist include Whiplash’s Miles Teller, The Fault in Our Stars’ Ansel Elgort, and Brooklyn’s Emory Cohen. Variety also reports that Blake Jenner (Glee) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) are on the shortlist.
The movie is set for release in 2018, and will be directed by Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and the screenplay is being written by saga icon Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. We will just have to wait and see whether the new actor will do the legendary Harrison Ford’s Han Solo justice.
